About

TITLE:

HALO: Acorns and tarot cards

On all levels except physical, Gingko is a cat. They're massively curious, quite reckless, and would 100% knock glasses off of tables just to mess with people. They are drawn to strange things; they can and will hug a sea hag If they're given the chance to dammit. They enjoy playing pranks on people, like switching books around and drawing dicks on people's stuff. If there are Shenanigans occurring, Gingko is most definitely at the center of it. They don't really care about what people think of them; there is no place in their heart for worrying about appearances. They're willing to get dirty if it means they enjoy themselves. Gingko is surprisingly sweet, once you get past their peculiar exterior. They make sure their friends are comfortable before taking care of themselves. This can lead to problems with neglecting their own well-being, but they do a decent job of keeping that in check. Because they are selectively mute, a lot of people find it difficult to communicate with them. This doesn't really bother them too much. They are quite good with children and animals; you don't need to speak to animals to enjoy their company, and children tend to be more understanding of their issue than adults. They aren't even the slightest bit organized. Most of their possessions are thrown together with no rime or reason. They don't really get angry, but if someone engages in a feud with them, they will reciprocate. They don't start fights, they end them. They are also completely capable and willing to pull the Asshole Cat card at any given moment. Don't test them they will put cow shit in your pillowcases while you sleep.

BIO

They were part of a small tribe of arbour goblins that inhabit (insert forest name here). They had three siblings: Rowan, Willow, and Madron. Both of their parents were alive and well. Last time they checked. It wasn’t that long ago, right?
Right?
Gingko ended up leaving to pursue arcane interests beyond those of their tribe.
The parting was amicable, and Gingko used to share information relevant to the tribe’s interests with Syca, the tribe’s chief shaman.
That is, before the Herald removed their memories of the tribe. Gingko began to fraternize with the rest of civilization more frequently after parting with the tribe. They consulted other diviners; other people from various schools of magic who shared their interests. More involved with the outside world than most other arbour goblins. They tend to be pretty detached from the rest of the world. Took a few classes at different arcane institutes to supplement their outside work. They’d sell tarot readings on the streets for money to fund their studies. There wasn’t a real, clear goal for them. Gingko was learning for the sake of learning. They pretty much took one look at somebody like Mordenkainen and said “I want that.” Their work eventually led them to the Traveler, a funny little god only mentioned in passing once in a blue moon. They offer service to the Traveler in exchange for the occasional aid with their studies.
It is around this time that they first came into Contact with the Mist-Cloaked Herald.
A powerful divinatory entity that feeds on creations of the mind- Memories and thoughts and dreams and such. Some call on it to aid them, trading memories of their past for glimpses of the future. It has consumed many greedy diviners this way.It was eventually sealed away by survivors of its seductive power, to prevent anyone else from falling victim to it. It was bound to a deck of cards and sealed in a cave deep in the woods. Its location was a closely guarded secret that was eventually lost to time as the survivors faded into history. Hundreds of years later, a thin crack in the cave’s arcane wards appeared- the fruit of centuries of raging against its chains. The tiniest piece of the Mist-Cloaked Herald’s mind slipped out, search for somebody on the outside to trick into breaking the seal. It found the nearest receptive creature and latched onto it This creature was Gingko. A divination wizard.
The Herald manifested as a whisper in their dreams, telling them of a powerful artifact hidden in the woods. It spoke of a deck of cards that can not only show them the future, but allow them to manipulate it as well. It preyed on their curiosity, and convinced them to seek out the cave. Guided by the Herald’s whisper, they eventually discovered the sealed cave. When they dispelled the cave wards, the Mist-Cloaked Herald was released back into the world. Completely starved of energy from being imprisoned for so long, it immediately attacked Gingko, feasting on their mind. This leaves a permanent mark on them. It takes most memories of their past, including memories of their family. After this, Gingko is left with memories of the last four or so months of their life before finding the cave. After it feeds, the Herald leaves. The tiny part that first contacted Gingko remains, however. Whether the two like it or not, their fates are linked now. The Traveler is the one that takes pity on Gingko and helps them get back on their feet. Gingko has been good to him in the past, and this is how he chooses to repay them for their loyalty.
After the Herald encounter, Gingko lost contact with their old community. They became more isolated, only turning to the Traveler and their familiar, Peanut, for company. They remembered interacting with other mages beyond the forest, but they don’t remember the reason for it.
Everything is a blur.
And they’re hoping to change that.

Trivia

  • The deck of cards that the Herald was bound to is cursed: the use can divine the futures of everyone but themselves. It is a side effect of hosting the Herald’s corrupting essence for so long.
  • They live in a treehouse far from the world with their best friend, Renakke.
  • Their favorite fruit is kiwi.
  • They're surpisingly good at fishing.

Renakke [ It's Complicated ]

When Gingko accidentally released The Mist-Cloaked Herald from the cave, they also freed Renakke from stasis. They took the changeling in while they both recovered from the Herald's sudden escape. This brief period became extended, and now the two take up permanent residence together. They love Renakke. They don't know if it's a romantic love or not, but that doesn't really matter to them.

Merriweather Moonsong [ Buddies ]

Gingko briefly traveled with Merriweather, Teacup, and Chasm. Merriweather didn't adopt Gingko, per se, but they were treated like family the whole time they were on the road together. They got along like a house on fire. Gingko had asked Merriweather for aid in locating the Herald; a request that they said they'd try to honor. It's a pity that Merriweather's the only one that remembers that conversation.

Teacup [ Penpals ]

Gingko briefly traveled with Merriweather, Teacup, and Chasm. Teacup decided that beyond Merri and Chasm, Gingko was going to be his Best Friend. Even after they parted ways, Gingko and Teacup kept in touch. They're penpals, of a sort. It's a weird but fun relationship.

Ziyaad Malemir [ Colleague ]

Ziyaad was one of the first people that Gingko turned to when looking for more information about what happened. Mercifully, Ziyaad had not been wiped from their memory. He was unable to help at first, but the two have since begun working together on piecing together what exactly happened.
