Return to Ruin
"Cleobulus receives an ominous message from Anacharsis regarding a friend from the past and leaves the monastery in secret to investigate on his own." —Opening Narration Return to Ruin is a paralogue in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Contents [ show ] StoryCleobulus receives an unsigned self-destructive letter from a mysterious mage who appears in the courtyard, but he does not need a name to know who it is from. The content of the letter suggests that Anacharsis has something of interest in his possession, alluding to "old ties." Worried at the implications, he sets off on his own to handle what he presumes to be his personal business, but is seen by Byleth. The location he arrives at is a temple close to the mountains of Zanado that is in ruins, barely holding itself up. There, his father awaits him with a bemused expression, excited to present his latest experiment. Cleobulus does not know what he is referring to until he hears a distinct voice, and behind him, he turns around to see Miklan struggling against magical binding. In his grasp is a crest stone, and before Cleobulus can head over to free him, he transforms into the Black Beast from long ago... But something is different this time. The transformation is incomplete, the beastly form unstable, as Miklan struggles for control. "Kill the both of them," comes the order from Anacharsis, and thus the stage is set. It is an ambush, and multiple Agarthan enemies reveal themselves, as well as two Titanus. Just in time, for Byleth and the others have caught up. Cleobulus seems disappointed that they have come, for he cannot guarantee they will all come out of this alive. There are two goals for this quest, but only one is mandatory in order to complete the paralogue. Defeating Anacharsis in combat will end the paralogue, but additionally, if the player can prevent the Black Beast/Miklan from falling, as well as defeat the enemy commander in less than 10 turns—before Miklan loses control entirely—Cleobulus can reverse the damage done and remove the crest stone. The Black Beast remains paralyzed for the first 10 turns, unable to attack. Afterwards, Miklan will be forced to surrender control to the beast and become overtaken, and thus will be able to begin its assault on your units. After defeating Anacharsis, the man will decide that he's had enough fun for the day and warp away, but not before gleefully declaring that they'd all be sent to Hell. Cleobulus realizes that the temple is about to fall down on them, but thanks to his powerful magic, the party is able to escape with their lives. If Miklan has been saved, Cleobulus will ask Byleth if he can bring the man back to the monastery to help him recover. At the Agarthan's behest, Byleth agrees, and Miklan will henceforth be at the monastery. If spoken to, there is an option to recruit him. Additionally, after returning to the monastery, Cleobulus will ask to speak to Byleth privately. He'll hand them an item that he presumes Anacharsis has dropped, an Agarthan drug of some sort, saying he has no use for it and suggests Byleth either throws it out or gives it to someone they don't like. He'll follow up with a wry smile, saying not to worry, he's "tested" it to make sure it wasn't harmful. The item will permanently increase all stats of a selected unit by two. Then, he'll proceed to thank them for following after him, certain he would be long-dead without the professor's interference.
