About

Puca is the son of Juniper, the Bumblebun princess, which in some circles would make him a prince, but he is really only of noble rank. His mother’s best friend, Princess Asta, insisted on giving Puca and his sister titles to go with their noble class, since Bumblebuns don’t have any of their own, so he is superficially a Baron. Puca cares nothing at all for this, however, because it does him no good anyway, as he sees it. He always thought being nobility should mean that people would love or at least admire him, and that he would have many friends, but that hasn’t been the case. Rather, people have always seemed to be either afraid of or disgusted by him, so as far as he is concerned he might as well not be a noble at all, and he never thinks of it.

Although Puca lives the same comfortable life as his sister Mielle as far as having a safe home and a loving family, his lack of friends outside the family to spend the day playing with really puts a damper on what should be a happy childhood. He ends up spending a lot of time alone, trying to come up with ways to make other youngsters like him better, doing good deeds where he can in hopes that someone will see he is a good person and not scary at all. With the support of his family and the few true companions he does have, hopefully he will get there one day.

Story Summary

Since he is still very young, Puca’s story is really just beginning. He hatched not long after his mother came of age, and was immediately welcomed into his mother’s extended family along with his twin, Mielle. This came about just before the decree that no more Bumblebun eggs would be laid went out from the Queen, so he and his sister are among the last young Bumblebuns to exist. It made the twins very sad when they learned this, and they made a pact to remain children as long as they could. So far, it seems to be working. However, despite staying young, Puca continues to grow and develop each day in spirit and personality at the very least, the mystery of who he is as a person revealing itself day by day to the delight (and sometimes annoyance, in all honesty) of all who love him.

Puca is very different from his sister, shy and quiet where she is loud and confident. His introversion is probably completely natural, but the way he has ended up being treated by some of his peers has caused it to become more extreme, whereas a little understanding probably could have made it more manageable. Unfortunately, he was born with unusual looks that can make him rather intimidating to some at first glance, with his striking colors and red eyes, resembling a demon or some such thing, but he’s really a timid little fellow and wouldn’t hurt a fly. In fact, he is easily frightened, prone to crying and hiding behind his mother, so he is often the butt of jokes. Mielle is rather embarrassed by him, but still refuses to let him be bullied or leave him out of her games if he really wants to come along. He will gladly join her for the quieter and calmer games, but is usually too scared to do anything she might consider “exciting.” It means a lot to her to have her brother with her, though, so she tries to encourage him and help him out of his shell, often without success. Puca admires his sister, his mother, and his Uncle Cacao, who is a knight, seeing them as strong people he wants to be more like one day.

Main Relationships

Juniper [ Mother ] Puca loves and trusts his mother above all others, knowing that she would never think any less of him for being timid. He may rely on her too much, actually. He spends most of his time with her and her friends, only going off with other young Bumblebuns when she pushes him a bit, or when Mielle coaxes him or he has a rare moment when he can work up the courage himself.
Mielle [ Sister ] Mielle is often embarrassed by her brother’s lack of backbone, but she still loves him and tries to take care of him. Puca is grateful to her for trying to include him and for defending him from bullies, and he admires her more outgoing and adventurous personality. When the two of them are alone together, playing or scheming or just talking, he can often forget there is any difference between them, just like it was in the nest just after they hatched.
Asta [ "Aunt" ] Asta is Puca’s mother’s best friend and a Mothcat. She raised Juniper from an egg and views her almost as a daughter as well as a friend, so by extension, Puca and Mielle are kind of like grandchildren to her, although she tells them to think of her as an aunt. She loves to give them gifts and help take care of them, and she even gave them noble titles. Puca likes Asta a lot and finds her almost as comforting to be around as his mother. He likes to burrow into her super fluffy fur and nap.
Cacao [ Uncle ] Cacao is Juniper’s older brother who took care of Juni’s egg for a time, before giving it to Asta, so he is Puca’s real uncle. Cacao is gentle and wise, and was made a knight by Asta a while back. Puca really admires his uncle and keeps asking him for stories of his knightly exploits, despite being told more than once that it’s only a title and he has never fought a dragon or anything. Puca somehow can’t quite believe that, and wondering about the great things Cacao might have done fuels his imagination and allows him to hope he might be able to follow in his uncle’s footsteps one day. Companions

Vlad [ Vampire Rat ] Puca is actually kind of scared of him, but Vlad has helped scare away those who have picked on Puca before, and he seems to like to be around the little Bumblebun, so Puca guesses they are friends. Kinda.

Molasses [ Caramel Candy Snail ] Puca finds a her little disturbing because she's so red she looks like she might be covered in blood. However, she seems to actually be harmless, so Puca has found himself pushing his unease aside and trying to befriend her. He often feeds her leaves and candies, and she seems grateful from the way she sometimes lays her little eye stalks on his paw as if to hug him.

Herman [ Candy Crab ] He's actually Puca's favorite because he's sort of cute and the least scary of the three critters who follow Puca around. Puca suspects Herman likes his company because Puca has no interest in eating him even though he looks like candy, and people's disinterest in being around Puca means there will be fewer others around who might want to eat Herman, too. Juniper insists that Herman likes Puca because Puca is friendly and sweet.
