Cain first encountered Skylar just after one of his losses. He had just made it to the city where the summoner challenge starts and had signed up. He chose to battle during the time waiting for the event to start. After yet another loss, to someone six years younger than himself, Cain was leaving the battlefield. Skylar had just arrived at the city and signed up for the event himself (and came to the field on the recommendations of the attendant who helped him sign up) and Cain's battle was the very first time Skylar had seen a fight between summoners. of the fighters, Cain was closer, so Skylar came up to praise Cain, as Skylar thought what he had seen was incredible. 

Cain assumed it was sarcasm, as he was used to being bullied and harassed for his low strength for his age, and verbally snapped at Skylar. Which was followed with Skylar crying, and Cain realizing that this person was actually being genuine. Embarrassed, Cain consoles Skylar and offers to take him out to a meal as an apology. Skylar agrees. Although when Cain left his card for payment on the table while talking with Skylar after they finished eating, it was stolen. 

They weren't the only ones to suffered from the theft. A woman at a neighboring table had her card go missing, too. They noticed traces of uncanny magic, likely of the type possessed by spirit type elarim that is difficult for regular summoners to sense. The woman, Gina, offers to join them to track down the source of those traces. Skylar volunteered to pay for their meal, and Cain brings him along so he can pay him back afterwards.

They do manage to track the thief, but the thief was too strong for the three to handle. Fortunately, a proctor of the challenge, Orrieal, noticed them and intervened. Getting the two money cards back. 

Given that the travel between cities could be quite dangerous, and that Gina was also here for the challenge. She suggested that they all team up. They all agreed.

• Kilspri - Corbsok (storm)- Cain's very first summon. After Avril helped him escape the castle, she forced a wild kilspri into submission, allowing Cain to form a pact.
• Pupent - Rattine - Gyptalbra (sandstorm)- Cain's second summon. A very cheerful and slightly airheaded creature.
• Chirpler - Riegawk - Pielaptor (hurricane)
• Coracat - Pawdpur - Catrillion (Eclipse) - a mischevous little creature that Cain initially didn't want to form a pact with. Although, he's has come to accept it as a part of his team. It's best friends with Skylar's Lilpillar summon.
• Pupook - Larvility - Reignoth (hurricane)

Orkaton (they/them, it/its): As a star elemental, Orca is unable to form pacts with summoners. although that doesn't stop Orca from following its friend. They hid in Cain's shadow when Cain left the castle. Orca didn't want to disturb Cain now that Cain was free of the castle. So, it stayed in the shadow, ready to defend Cain should it ever need to do so. Up until the point that Orca is forced to leave the shadows to protect Cain, Cain had never seen its true form. It had always just been the shadow in the garden that gave him solace and friendship when no one else would. So, Cain was shocked to learn that Orca was one of the mythic Elarim of legends.

Skylar's Elarim: Cain is often training with Skylar's summons, as Skylar doesn't like to train. And Cain wants to make sure Skylar's Elarim are strong enough to protect Skylar should Cain be unable to protect him. Due to spending so much time with Skylar and Skylar's elarim, Cain can perform some magic with his partners summons. Something that's relatively uncommon due to the level of trust required.
