{short bio}
Kain was left on the streets in one of the large cities of An Yuan, and grew up an orphan, not knowing of how he came to be there.  In his eyes, he believed his parents had left him there, as many others had done the same.  This was not uncommon, and there were several other hybrids, known to the locals as street rats, who had been living off scraps the same way, and tended to watch one another.  However, in the area where he lived, there was also an orphanage held by the government, where several officials found it their job to catch the street rats and bring them there.  Though he managed to escape for a while, at the age of seven he was finally caught by one of them and brought to the orphanage.  As there were many other hybrids there, they were only served porridge for dinner and it was scarce.  Shortly after, due to his youth, he was adopted by the wealthy Huxleys to serve as their servant.

Though the Huxleys were significantly better than the orphanage and he had been fairly lucky, it had been difficult to adapt.  The husband, Camden, was a notable businessman of a notable pharmaceutical company, who was quick to anger when things were not done exactly to his specifications.  Though his wife, Lydia, was less harsh about this, she was often dismissive of Kain, placing him below her in status due to his status as a hybrid.  Worse still, they had a son Kain's age - Drake - who was able to go to school and learn, which was one of the few wishes the young hybrid had.  The family also denied all his requests to learn, stating that he should know his place.  Despite this, Drake was an only child, and often talked to him against his mother’s wishes.  Though they certainly weren’t the best of friends - especially considering Drake thought Kain was happy in his current position - they were acquaintances.

That being said, living at an aristocrat’s home had it’s perks.  There was one other servant - a Quetzal hybrid in his mid 20s named Pascal - who served as an uncle like figure to Kain and a confidante of sorts.  He taught him how to read, which led to him sneaking into the aristocrat’s library and borrowing books to soothe his thirst for knowledge.  His favourites tended to be realistic fantasies (think Game of Thrones), and also non-fiction encyclopedias about plants and herbs.  Eventually, one of the members from the Academy found him, and consulted with the head of the Huxley family.  Though initially reluctant, they were forced to let him go.  After quickly packing the few belongings he had, Pascal bid him farewell and gave him his treasured silver pocketwatch; a family heirloom with the engraving of an unknown bird.  Kain keeps it with him always, even on missions.

Kain is more of an introvert than an extrovert, preferring solitude over socialization.  However, though he refuses to admit it, he does enjoy interaction with those he trusts most, and is the happiest when he has those bonds, serving as a loyal (albeit irritable) friend.  However, he is slow to trust, so it may take a while before he can build these friendships.  On first impression, it is easy to see that Kain is, in general, incredibly sarcastic, often approaching most things with skepticism and a quick temper.  Surprisingly, this can have its strengths - he is brave and strong-willed, saying exactly what he means; facing whatever consequences his actions have head on.  That being said, he is more of a thinker, tending to plan his actions and words carefully before leaping to such a decision.  Even in a situation of panic, he tends to be calm.  After getting to know him better, it can be seen that he has a stubborn streak, but he serves as a loyal friend regardless.  He is also fairly disciplined compared to other people, especially when considering his studies, which he works on with great diligence.

She was everything.  He didn't know it at the time, too busy being surprised that anyone would enjoy solitude with books and gardens the way he did, but oh, how she did.  Kain isn't one to say it out loud, but Yamna taught him the meaning of the world, and he would do anything to be there for her in turn.

The energetic Dahlia keeps pestering him, and he can't stop wondering why.  How long will it be until someone teaches him how to force people to leave him alone, again?...

{trivia}

Fun Fact #1: If he went to a university, he’d likely be an English major with a Sociology minor.
Fun Fact #2:  One of the few possessions he brought with him was his servant clothing, in case it came in handy for disguise.
Fun Fact #3:  Enlai may have given him his name by calmly suggesting it to Henry Huxley; as he had none as an orphan.
Fun Fact #4:  He’s nearsighted, which is why he wears glasses.

- Likes/Dislikes:
Likes:
Books.  He can be a bit of a nerd, and loves reading.  It’s one of his favourite hobbies.
Affection.  However, he will never let people know, even though it might be obvious.  In particular, he likes it when people scratch his ears, but he’s heavily embarrassed by it.
Stealth missions.  They make him feel free, and also keep him busy.
English/Lit.  Kain loves to write and absorb more information, and is good at it.
Gardens.  He likes nature, and thinks it’s beautiful.  It also makes him wonder about how things used to be centuries ago.

Dislikes:
Noise.  Can't stand it, which is partially tied to his ability below and his introverted nature.
Lack of tidiness.  He’s not one to force people to be tidy though he’ll be annoyed.  It frustrates him more when he’s not tidy himself - such as not being able to find a particular item.
Parties/socials.  Kain is uncomfortable around huge swarms of people.
History.  He believes it only tells the victor’s side of the story half of the time.
Orphanages.  Due to his personal experiences, Kain loathes them.

- Ability:
Enhanced Speed - Particularly skilled in chasing targets down.

Dresscode:  Kain doesn’t have much clothing, but he tries to be as organized as possible, opting for more preppy clothing.  He always keeps his hair in a short, neat ponytail, and prefers layers when it comes to his clothes.  Whatever he’s wearing, he keeps Enlai’s silver pocketwatch with him, whether he wears it over his neck or slips it into his pocket.
