PERSONALITY

On the surface Lavinia is a kind but forgettable woman. She’s perfectly polite but rarely speaks unless spoken to, rather preferring to listen instead. She’s capable of being charming, and is happy to tell people whatever she thinks they’d like to hear so that she may continue to go about her business undisturbed. Due to her passive and gentle nature, others are often surprised by her ambition. She cares deeply about her projects, and she’s confident in her abilities as a scientist, as well as a project director.

However, if you are unfortunate enough to know Dr. Bates on a more intimate level, her pleasant facade quickly crumbles away. Her kindness, and warmth is entirely manufactured to cover cold indifference. Lavinia is incredibly manipulative, often seeing people and relationships only as a means to an end that serves her goals in some way. She’s exceptionally controlling and meticulous in every aspect of her life never affording time to anything that she deems frivolous. She’s calculating, and incredibly patient content to sit in wait as her machinations come to fruition.

Despite priding herself on discipline and emotional detachment, Lavinia is at her deepest core, fueled by an incredible all consuming rage. It deeply, devastatingly, inadvisable to do something which might incur her ire.

RELATIONSHIPS

ATTICUS CALDWELL | Employee, Ex-Boyfriend Lavinia hired Atticus on his merit, and due to how few connections he had to others. He was terribly easy to isolate, and easier still to keep wrapped around her finger as he worked on her research. However, over time his disgustingly sincere kindness began to grow on her more than she’d like to admit. And then he began to look into things that he shouldn’t have. And then he tried to leave. How terribly regrettable.

ROBERT DENERON | Husband A marriage of convenience, Robert and Lavinia have grown further apart with every passing year. Lavinia sees him as a disappointment, full of untapped potential. Not that he was ever terribly useful in the first place she often finds herself irritated by what a homemaker he’s become. Having free childcare makes him worth keeping around but she finds it exceptionally frustrating that he doesn’t listen to her nearly as often as he used to.

SHILOH DENERON | Daughter Her daughter, and only surviving kin. She takes great pride in her child, though it’s often hard to tell if her attention to Shiloh comes from a place of maternal nurturing or scientific fascination.

MATTHEW VALEREZ | Employee Hired both due to his merit as a physician scientist and his attachment to Atticus, Lavinia is entirely indifferent to her socially awkward employee. He does his work, keeps his head down and most importantly, stays out of her way. She’d forget his name if she didn’t have to write his paychecks.

ALEXANDREA CALDWELL | Acquaintance An acquaintance who asks far too many questions. Lavinia finds her irritating and mildly inconvenient.
