Martin is the latest in a long line of nobility dating back to the founding of Artenia. Despite his position as king, he has very few actual responsibilities, and shirks the ones he does have. Spending most of his time about the city-state spending his incredible wealth and attending the many street performances, Martin is acquainted with many of his subjects on a personal level, leading him to be a well-liked, if not respected, ruler. A kind soul, he always puts his personal duties to others above his official duties, and leads a life of merriment and revelry.

Backstory
Martin Artenia has always lived an extremely cushy life. Since Zurit, the noble family's axe and symbol of their power, was lost hundreds of years ago the noble family's sway over the country had been increasingly weak as power was transferred to the Council of the People instead. By Martin's time the monarch was a leader only in name, and the Council held all official power over the country's laws. Elena, Martin's mother and former queen of Artenia, pushed for power to return to the royalty as despite the loss of an axe, the Council no longer truly held the people's best interests at heart. She died when Martin was young, leaving a teenager in charge of a country. Of course power can't be returned to such a fragile system, the council claimed, so the royalty remained puppets and Martin given a hefty allowance to spend as he pleased while the Council did the work. Finding comfort in the jovial and bright exterior which Artenia prides itself on, Martin quickly made a habit of spending his days floating between shops, street performers, and his favorite pastime: jousting. Believing his mother's insistence on work and constant meddling is what weakened her to the point of death, Martin strives to live his life in the opposite manner: He simply lives from day to day, leaving the hard decisions to others.
