Story

Lann started off as a normal child without any friends. He seemed to have difficulty forming any relationships from a young age. When his communication skills began to flourish, many children tried to be friends with him... but always backed away when they heard his familiar overly excited voice inside their heads. Lann could not control his telepathy back then.

He kept hearing everyone's thoughts and they kept hearing his. He used to be so overexcited about meeting everyone else... and he always knew their bizarre first reactions. It was painful to keep hearing how "weird" and "creepy" he kept being when the only thing he was doing was existing within 1-2 meters of them!

Recruited by Memory

A headset he picked up at a store seemed to let him control his telepathy somewhat. With time, his range increased, and the seemingly ordinary headset helped him keep his and everyone's thoughts in their own head. Phew!

However, it was not enough; at least not until a curious man and woman found him. The man introduced himself as "Memory" and told him he wasn't the only "gifted" one, pointing to the one he named "Reason". Lann would better describe this "gift" as a "curse" but-- he decided to join him in his journey to find the others.

As Memory had hoped, Lann was able to solve the difficulties of language barriers by being in close range with the rest of the Pillars of Knowledge. Reason was finally able to fully understand everyone, since her English was never that good. As the group kept travelling the world to find the rest of the BOKs, his abilities came in handy; they were capable of syncing everyone (Memory, Reason, Sense, Imagination and Faith respectively) to fluently talk in a language each one would understand.

All of the Pillars-- or Bastards of Knowledge had settled to meet regularly in specific spots so they could figure out what their purpose and goal should be. They were... tacky but Lann was quite fond of the idea.

Together... but apart

But then the unexpected happened; the kidnapping. Before they could locate Emotion or Intuition, people in wing-shaped cloaks approached their meeting spot, their... base of sorts. He was the first one to arrive at the scene, trying to lay low so they wouldn't see him. He tried to contact everyone with his power, but was suddenly hit in the head with a metal bat, falling unconscious.

When he wakes up, everyone had already started ignoring him. He thought it was immoral to peek through people's thoughts by now, but in this deafening silence... They think he betrayed them?!

Lonely was not a feeling he wanted to come back to, yet he was forced back to it again... And so, with no one to truly talk to, he wandered the 3-story apartment he and the others were placed in. It was a large place, full of crows...? And-- wait who was that?!

Design Notes

  • He is a human with light skin.
  • His grey hair is short and neat. The back of it is unruly and bubbly, much like his bangs. He also has two cowlicks, one standing and one falling, which shouldn't be forgotten!!
  • His face is angular in shape.
  • His eyes are square and blue in colour. He wears square glasses with a bottom rim.
  • His eyebrows are medium in length and width, whereas his nose is stubby and sharp.
  • He's long and thin in terms of body type.
  • His fashion style is casual, prioritising comfort, then fashion and taste. He usually dresses in grey and blue colours.
  • His item is a grey gaming headset.
  • His default outfit is a grey turtleneck sweater under a long dark grey scarf with a blue star on it. He was also wearing grey capri pants and short dark grey boots similar to the scarf.

Pillar of Knowledge: Language

As Language, Lann has several abilities. He is a lover of knowledge and is able to pick up on other languages really quickly. He's a nerd who loves to talk about etymologies and word or idiom history. He can also be quite good at descriptions and narration, which can come in handy in school theatre performances... or witness accounts, Lann presumes.

All of that was fine... if only he hadn't been cursed with the ability of telepathy. He could hear everyone's thoughts... and they could hear his. It's hard to control when this happens but it's more frequent when he's closer to other people. However, that didn't deter him from trying his best to be friends with everyone!

A skill he never knew he had up until Memory arrived was his "Aura of Translation". Apparently, people who aren't fluent in the same language are able to communicate when he's in a 10 meter radius from them. Every person involved is under the belief that everyone else can fully speak their primary or secondary language. It's... a strange feeling, especially if their language is unique and remote. However, if the person is able to speak a more widely spread language (such as English, Chinese, Spanish etc), that language will be the one they hear.

Item: Gaming Headset

Every Pillar of Knowledge has an item that benefit them in some way. Lann acquired his headset in a local electronics store, while looking for something to game comfortably with (yep, he's a casual gamer). Items always seem to be randomly selected, so he had no idea what that headset could do.

When he first tried it out, he couldn't tell the difference; that was because he was alone in his room. But in reality, the headset had heightened his telepathy and "aura of translation" by an extra 10 meters. With a little extra practice, Lann would also be able to control which thoughts he can share to other people, his own or... others'. The item allowed him to establish a telepathic network with whomever he pleases at the cost of increased tiredness. Being able to maintain a network of thoughts and regulate the passage of messages would take an absurd amount of resources, right?

Relationships

13377325?1673266186 Memory  - Leader...?

Memory is the one who found him and "recruited" him along with the others. He seems to know way more than he lets on, but even THE Language's influence couldn't get him to open up. He's eccentric and secretive, which is something that worries Lann... but he can't help it. Every time he's tried to learn something from Memory, he's failed... it's sad really.

8810669?1681480768 Reason  - Leader?!

She is intrusive and loud as well as being the Reason of the BOKs. Lann is constantly being belittled by Reason, even if she has called him "useful" many times in the past. She keeps ordering everyone around... but nobody listens to her anymore. She doesn't have the influence she thinks she has. If only she had Lann's help?

8786017?1651786418 Sense  - Loner

When Lann joined Memory's and Reason's adventure, they headed off to Bastille and found Sense, in a state "higher" than the sky. It's hard to communicate with him due to many factors: for one, he's almost always on something! Then again, he also asks to be alone as noises and other stimuli annoy him. Lann doesn't want to be annoying so... what else can he do?

14167046?1641255738 Imagination  - Friend...?

It's really difficult to understand Imagination, even for Lann who's supposed to be Language and all! They can't understand much of the idioms Lann just loves to use!!! For "Imagination", they're really bad at making things up. So... they come to Lann a lot of the time so he can aptly describe what they have in mind with words. Is this friendship??

14223448?1641689194 Faith  - Obnoxious kid

Faith, unlike most others, talks... way too much. Lann should be grateful for having someone so talkative around, but Faith isn't really communicating with everyone. He mostly preaches and daydreams all about the new conspiracy theory he has discovered or conjured! Learning all about how lizard people are real is not useful at all!!

8776134?1653066877 Intuition  - Friend

The incident divided all of them and even if they were all closer than ever - living in the same complex and all - they were apart. However, Lann was able to meet two new people here, one of them being who Reason dubbed as Intuition. She was... nice! Actually nice, even if a bit unpredictable. She was the only one talking to him...

13377297?1635938257 Emotion  - Acquaintance

Along with Intuition, Emotion also appeared in the apartment complex. She seemed to have been living there for a while, meaning she knew where everything was. However, she was a recluse just like the rest of the BOKs... unwilling to share much with Lann. Apparently she could feel everything everyone is feeling, much like how Lann could hear everyone's thoughts?
