Rusalka, An Inevitable Encounter

Rusalka is a character in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. In the first four routes of the story, he is a member of the Black Eagles under Edelgard. However, due to his trauma and social anxiety he is also a member of the Emerald Dragons under Glade de Foxguard, , with whom he allies for the Amber Scales route. Rusalka is the son of Professor Sephtis, and suffers heavily from an unknown trauma that results in him finding it incredibly difficult to be around others and cope with difficult situations.

Warning! This content will contain spoilers for Fire Emblem: Three Houses. [ ]

Rusalka’s trauma stems from the fear that should he become too close to his peers he could put them in danger, because of his major crest and the power that it brings. When he was eight years old, the progenitor of his crest used him as a tool to murder most of his own family. The trauma of being possessed and used that way has left Rusalka deeply scarred and he refuses to let it ever happen to him again. He still suffers from persistent social anxiety, particularly around people who have authority over him, and struggles with being given orders because he is incredibly flighty and frightened. He has lived at Garreg Mach since he was eight, with his father taking up a job as a professor there to support them both, and is now trying his best to be a good student as he doesn’t wish to let Sephtis down. The Emerald Dragons were partly founded as a means of supporting Rusalka and reintroducing him to being around people.

Biography

Early Life

Rusalka was born into the noble household of Ubel, who presided over the territory he would take his first name from, Rusalka. The Von Ubel lineage, which stretched back to before the days of the Ten Elites, were a vassal to house Bergliez and assisted and supported in military affairs. In particular, as a family of highly accomplished dark mages, the family were responsible for training and producing mages for the Imperial Army. The Ubel family bore a unique crest, the crest of Abaddon, that granted them highly specialised dark magic in mind control, which proved useful not just against the Empire’s enemies but also in ensuring their own soldiers always followed orders. Rusalka’s birth was unplanned, as his parents Lilith and Sephtis von Ubel were both only just graduated from Garreg Mach Officer’s Academy, but nevertheless he was welcomed and cared for by them both and they adored him unconditionally.

Thanks to the wealth of his family, Rusalka grew up privileged and was undoubtedly spoiled by both his parents and grandparents with attention and affection. To their surprise, he was born bearing the family’s crest, and the Major Crest at that, which gave them hope that he could one day become a powerful and well respected head of the family one day, so long as he had a good education and upbringing to encourage it. Naturally, this meant Rusalka was taught by some of the best tutors and scholars that his father Sephtis and mother Lilith could afford. At times, Sephtis and Rusalka’s grandfather would also take him to see how the family worked with their allies and companions, meaning that Rusalka would also spend time in Bergliez territory and in the capital city of Enbarr. Rusalka was a quick learner and always enjoyed being around his father whilst he travelled and conducted business. Though he worried about the prospect of being the leader of the Ubel household one day, he felt that he had time to learn and grow. He was a confident child and the praise and encouragement he received from his family made him feel supported.

Furthermore, the family’s connections to other noble households meant that Rusalka often crossed paths with children and future heirs who were close in age to him. Though he did sometimes see Caspar, the two didn’t have much in common as Rusalka preferred academics to training and fighting. Caspar would often joke that Rusalka would get along well with his other friend, Linhardt, but the two of them very rarely crossed paths in childhood. Rusalka’s best friend did not come from the Empire at all, but rather it was the son of one of his father’s childhood friends. This was Curan Silvius Menteth, son of the ruler of a small territory within the Alliance. Curan and Rusalka were inseparable whenever they visited one another’s houses and could always be found causing chaos and mischief wherever they went. Often they would get scolded by their parents, but they never let it get to them. No matter what, they trusted each other completely with everything.

When Rusalka was eight years old, however, the Ubel family was struck with a life changing tragedy, leaving only himself and his father as the survivors of the ordeal. It left Rusalka horrifically traumatised to the point that he could barely move and speak without breaking down into fits of panic and crying. He suffered from night terrors so badly that he would refuse to sleep, and his nausea also left him refusing food for so long that he lost a lot of weight and grew even more frail and sickly. Stricken with grief and without a home to keep his son safe in, Sephtis resorted to returning to his old school, begging the Archbishop that he and Rusalka be allowed sanctuary at the Monastery and School in return for Sephtis becoming a teacher there.

For the next eight years, Rusalka barely left his father’s new office, unless accompanied by him or under force by church healers for physical and magical treatments. He couldn’t cope with unfamiliar people and scenarios, and the gravity of the trauma that he had experienced left him unwilling to form any new friendships or bonds with people for fear of what could happen to them and to himself. His father remained dedicated to caring for him, and never once gave up on the hope that he might one day help Rusalka make a full recovery, but he knew it would be a long and difficult path for them both. Rusalka could see the amount of work and effort his father was putting into it all, and he felt guilty for being so vulnerable and unable to cope with simple tasks. He quietly promised himself that he would get better so that he would be less of a burden upon his father, but found pushing himself too far only made him sick - sometimes with embarrassing consequences. Nevertheless, he kept trying and would spend every day reading and studying to keep up with his education and to work on his stammering.

When he turned sixteen, Rusalka was offered chance to enter Garreg Mach Officer’s Academy as a full student - just as his father had done so when he was younger. Sephtis was worried that Rusalka would find school life overwhelming, but to his surprise Rusalka insisted that he had to try and join. Truthfully he did want to be like his father and study, and he knew that it would mean he would be less dependent upon Sephtis as well - something he needed for his personal growth. He was also, however, incredibly terrified of the prospect of meeting new people his age and learning alongside them. He had had some experience with the students of Garreg Mach, as his father often supervised the after school Detention Class and Rusalka would occasionally look in on what they were doing - but he had always been too scared to approach and talk to anyone.

On his first day, Sephtis helped his son get ready for his first class, and before Rusalka left he gifted him a small enchanted hairpin to wear - made from one of the family’s moths that formed part of their crest magic. He explained to Rusalka that the moth could activate with their crest magic, and that whenever he felt panicked or scared he should wake it up and let the moth help to calm him down. Though he would try to be there for his son, he hoped that the moth would suffice in the moments where he could not come to comfort him. Rusalka was overwhelmed with happiness at the gift, and he named the hair clip “Silkie” because he felt that since she was technically alive she was deserving of a proper name. He wore it to his first class that day, and he was introduced to the Black Eagles for the first time.

That first day did not exactly go smoothly. Unfortunately Rusalka found himself getting nervous as he was introduced to the new students he would be joining, and tried to keep his distance so that he would not have to do much speaking. This was not to last, as the house leader, Edelgard Von Hresvelg insisted that Rusalka speak and introduce himself to the class. Overwhelmed, Rusalka dissolved into a bad panic attack at being surrounded - resulting in him throwing up over Edelgard and other classmates in his meltdown. It was incredibly embarrassing, and drove Rusalka back to being a recluse inside his father’s office once again. He felt far too ashamed to rejoin the Black Eagles right away - even though Edelgard not only forgave him for the accident but wanted him to rejoin so that he could be a part of their class. It remained difficult for Rusalka to move past it, and he remained staunchly reclusive and introverted ever since.

Rusalka is aware of the suspicion that befalls his family from Church of Seiros because of the family’s strong atheist views - something he explains to Flayn in their supports. Interestingly, Rusalka says he prefers to remain an atheist, as not believing in the Goddess means that there is one less person out there who could potentially be disappointed in him.

Reasoning behind Rusalka’s atheism runs much deeper than just his lack of self-esteem, however. The Von Ubel family have historically been very aware of the deeper truths of Fódlan. Generations ago, it is revealed in both support conversations and in Sephtis’ paralogue with Seteth, the Von Ubel family formed a pact with a Nabatean who begged for shelter and protection during the War of Heroes. Abaddon, the Nabatean the family protected, granted the Von Ubel family his crest as a thank you for sheltering him. For many generations their relations were somewhat peaceful.

Abaddon, however, grew ever older and as he did his body began to decay. Unknown to the Von Ubel family, Abaddon had long ago shed his original body to increase his lifespan by forcibly possessing other Nabateans with his magic and then implanting his crest stone into their bodies. It had granted Abaddon a longer lifespan, but the bodies he possessed were drastically shortened in life because of the possession and operation. Once again, he needed a new body now in order to keep living - but now he did not think there were any Nabateans left for him to take over. Thus, he needed to plan something different.

The tragedy that struck the Von Ubel family came as Abaddon realised he could attempt to take over the body of a human who bore his blood strongly. As the strong crest blood within them may allow for successful transplantation of his crest stone. Sephtis only bore the minor crest, and was not an option because of it. So instead, Abaddon attempted to brainwash the major crest bearer of the family - eight year old Rusalka Von Ubel. Rusalka was young and at the time had no idea of the significance of his crest - only that it granted him and his father a unique style of dark magic that used enchanted moths. He was powerless to stop Abaddon from entering his room and attacking him with his own, far stronger, mind control magic. Abaddon removed Rusalka’s ability to move and act of his own free will, including taking his ability to speak, but kept his mind awake the entire time. This meant that Rusalka could only watch himself from within as one by one he was forced to attack and kill his own family members.

Sephtis, distraught that he had to subdue his own son, fought to try and free Rusalka from the brainwashing. Abaddon had not accounted for this strong pushback, and it became a fight that destroyed the Von Ubel family home. The household was destroyed in the fighting, but after an exhausting battle, it was Lilith who delivered the final blow, destroying Abaddon’s physical form at the cost of her own life - but freeing her son in the process. Sephtis took Rusalka and brought him to safety, before using his magic to seal the remains of Abaddon and his crest stone in a jar. Rusalka finally regained his body back, but was too catatonic to do anything aside cry and beg for forgiveness from his father.

The incident still plagues Rusalka with traumatic nightmares and flashbacks, greatly affecting his ability to function around others - as he fears Abaddon taking his body away from him again and causing him to kill any friends he might make.

Academy Phase

White Clouds

In White Clouds, Rusalka appears as part of the Black Eagles, though often on the sidelines rather than giving any direct contributions to class discussions. He is incredibly shy and introverted and for most of the exploration time Byleth can only find him hiding in Sephtis’ office - much like his fellow classmate Bernadetta who rarely leaves her room. Rusalka rarely contributes to class discussions, as he prefers to just watch from the sidelines, but does offer Byleth a couple of quests that ask them to retrieve a few of his favourite snacks so that he doesn’t have to leave his room.

He’s horrified by killing in battle, but his quote hints that this is not his first time spilling blood - which indeed it isn’t Rusalka comes out of his shell strongest in Chapter 6, when he stands up against the suspicions alleged against his father. He refuses to believe that his father would ever kidnap Flayn, and shoots down any suggestion that he is. If anything, Rusalka explains, if Sephtis had had anything to do with it then he would know about it. This only then leads for a couple of people to suspect him, causing him to panic and double back on himself. When Flayn is rescued, he admits he’s glad to no longer have as much suspicion hanging over himself and his father.

Amber Scales

Rusalka plays a larger role in Amber Scales, where he is seen alongside his father and the rest of the Emerald Dragons as a full student. Though he’s still nervous about contributing, the rest of the Emerald Dragons are patient with him, and are always encouraging of Rusalka’s ideas and suggestions - including encouraging him to speak his thoughts when his paper plane is the winner of their contest. This helps bring out a lot more of Rusalka’s true personality, and he is slightly less withdrawn in comparison to how he is in White Clouds. He often is the one to come up with the strategies for the Emerald Dragons, including suggesting protecting and helping Flayn so that she won’t be kidnapped.

As tensions increase, Rusalka joins Byleth and the rest of his class in trying to escape Garreg Mach, and remaining neutral in the emerging rebellion against the Church that Edelgard is instigating. He stands by his class and his father, helping get them all to safety, but laments the loss of Byleth in the battle.

War Phase

Crimson Flower

Rusalka joins the Black Eagle Strike Force and is happy to find his former classmates at the promised five year reunion. There, he appears to have grown slightly more confident and does speak more to the other students and to Byleth when he has ideas and strategic suggestions. He is unsurprised at learning of the corruption of the Church of Seiros and the powers at work in Fódlan, and actually says it makes him happy to have been an atheist all along because it means he doesn’t feel conflicted about going against them.

If Curan is not recruited, Rusalka is distraught to have to face him as an enemy. He refuses to deliver the final blow, and understands what will come if Curan does die on the battlefield. After his death, Rusalka will mourn Curan and wish that there was a way in which they both could have lived to see a better future for Fódlan.

Azure Moon/Verdant Wind

If Rusalka is recruited into either the Blue Lions or Golden Deer, he will accompany his new house into the post time skip. He remains a quiet member of the house, and does not contribute much as he does not feel much connection towards the rest of the class. He expresses concern at Dimitri’s behaviour in Azure Moon, and questions if the man is actually fit to rule. He also remains unimpressed by him after he regains his resolve. In Verdant Wind, Rusalka is unsurprised to find out greater forces are at play in Fodlan, as he knew of Nabateans already, but did not know that they made up the Church of Seiros. He does question if restoring the Church is the right decision given all they’ve now learned, but it is not listened to.

If he is not recruited, Rusalka appears as an enemy at Enbarr where he will meet his fate if he is killed in battle. He cannot be recruited in the post time skip. He has unique dialogue if he faces his father or Curan.

Silver Snow

Rusalka is hesitant as Byleth chooses to remain alongside the Church of Seiros, and in one small moment of defiance he actually asks Byleth if this is really the right thing to do. However, he will return to the promised meeting and join the Resistance army alongside the rest of the Black Eagles - albeit clearly reluctantly. If his father was not recruited he laments being separated from him and misses him terribly. This is worse still if Sephtis and he face one another and Sephtis is killed - after that, Rusalka will refuse to speak to Byleth entirely and his supports will be unavailable.

If he and his father are both present in the Resistance Army, both will be critical of Byleth’s decisions and will express it in their conversations with each other. However, they continue to follow Byleth as that is what was asked of them. If Sephtis is killed, however, Rusalka will immediately defect to the Imperial Army.

Amber Scales

Warning! This content will contain spoilers for Fire Emblem: Three Houses. [ ]

When Byleth returns after five years, they find Rusalka to be hiding in Abyss along with the rest of the Emerald Dragons and Sephtis. Rusalka is overjoyed to be reunited with his teacher once again, and displays a much stronger and more confident personality - but still easily panicked and nervous when it comes to speaking of his ideas. That being said, he eagerly assists in helping the rest of the Emerald Dragons plot their course forward in finding the truth of Fódlan and stopping those pulling the strings behind everything. Rusalka is nervous at the discovery of Agarthan experiments and the true power of crests, and he admits to Byleth and to his class of how it reminds him of what Abaddon put him and his family through. He is determined to find a peaceful resolution so that this kind of experimentation by Nabateans and Agarthans can finally be put to an end.

With the battle between Edelgard and Dimitri, Rusalka is the one to point out that their conflict is just a proxy, and it is his plans that help the Emerald Dragons stage an interference and end it before there is widespread destruction across Fódlan. He also suspects Claude of being curious about the truth as well, and suggests they pursue an alliance of some kind with him. His paralogue with Curan becomes available after this. He also appears as an enemy in Sephtis’ paralogue.

Personality

Rusalka’s personality is heavily influenced by the trauma he has experienced, and he is far from the person he was when he was younger. He’s extremely shy and timid, and struggles to interact with anyone outside of his own father and the rest of the Emerald Dragons - but even they take a lot of work on his part to gain the confidence he needs to be around them long term. Rusalka is incredibly introverted and prefers his own company to that of others, mostly because he fears getting too close to people may have adverse effects upon them, or get them killed because of what happened to him before. As such, he tends to forcibly isolate himself and push others away, and it can take a long time before he allows himself to trust anyone or talk to them about how he really feels. His trauma has left him worried constantly that he may one day kill others again, even though it was not truly his doing, and he blames himself for the actions forced upon him by Abaddon.

That being said, his nervous disposition hides the truly intelligent individual that Rusalka really is underneath it. He is incredibly knowledgeable and academic, and reads and studies a lot in his spare time - granting him a wealth of information that he can recall with ease. He’s also very talented at planning and analysing, often understanding what’s going on in an enemy’s plan or situation long before others even realise. The issue that holds him back is that he never has the confidence to explain his thoughts or opinions, and what he does say is often drowned out by the much louder voices of his peers. Rusalka barely talks above a whisper, and often expresses self-doubt and deep rooted insecurity about himself and his capabilities. Usually by telling people he “doesn’t know how to deal with” things going on around him. Despite this, his ideas are genuinely clever, and have never failed when they are used.

There are times, particularly after the time skip, where hints of Rusalka’s pre-trauma personality do begin to show through. He has moments where he can act incredibly creepy, especially when using his magic or talking about battle, and his demeanor can suddenly lose all warmth and emotion entirely. He often spaces out and stares blankly whilst in thought, and will voice some of his more unnerving thoughts and speculations out loud without really thinking about who might hear it and what they might think of him for it. It has left some people slightly concerned about Rusalka - but he quickly snaps back to his more timid self once he realises what he’s been doing and appears to be very self-conscious of how odd he can sometimes be. Some of his more dark suggestions also hint at how he was before the incident, and he seems very accustomed to underhanded tactics and assassination, and he’s unafraid of blood. Some do wonder if his colder state is a coping mechanism for war, but have never been able to say it with absolute certainty.

Despite all this, however, Rusalka is a genuinely caring individual towards those he has opened up to. He loves his father dearly, and respects and admires him as both a teacher and a parent. He has grown to trust his classmates, and of course he loves and trusts Curan more than anything as his childhood friend and companion. He does try to work harder to be there for those he cares for, and wants to overcome his issues and shortcomings for them. Rusalka wants to get better, but knows it will be a long and difficult process for him. Nevertheless he is determined, and the support and encouragement of his friends does help with that.

Rusalka - Spreading Wings (Crimson Flower)

With the end of the war, Rusalka welcomed Edelgard’s ascension to Emperor of a united Fódlan as a positive change for the nation and a sign of hope for a future of peace. Though still a naturally nervous person, he was granted good favour by the Emperor because of his family having no ties to the former Church at all, and was allowed to work closely with Edelgard in eliminating the remains of Those Who Slither in the Dark. For his achievements, he was greatly rewarded, and Rusalka chose to dedicate his time to restoring his family with the wealth and reputation he gained. The Von Ubel name became well known throughout Fódlan, and it’s leader was said to be a hardworking, if reclusive, man.

Rusalka - Spreading Wings (Amber Scales)

With the end of the war and the emergence of the Republic of Fódlan, Rusalka chose to return to his family home and dedicate his time to rebuilding it. With full support from former classmates and the leader of Fódlan themselves, Rusalka was able to rebuild his old home and one day eventually inherited the title of head of the Von Ubel family. He was said to be a hardworking leader, and far less reclusive than people thought he might have been. Often his former classmates would come to visit him, and he was known to always listen and help the people in his region as best as he could - even inviting them to banquets and parties in his own home. Though he always needed time to himself afterwards to rest and calm down, he felt he had truly recovered from his fear of being around others.

Rusalka - Spreading Wings (Other Routes)

With the end of the war, Rusalka returned to his family home and rebuilt what he could of it. Though his family were still treated with great suspicion, he worked hard to be a fair and caring leader to the people within his region. It was often said that the eventual head of the Von Ubel family was a highly reclusive type, but that his policies and actions spoke louder than any of the rumours did. His extensive personal writings were found after his death, including many diary entries of his condition and his thoughts on Fódlan and its leadership. Much of these texts were considered unsuitable for public viewing, however, and were disposed of.

Rusalka and Byleth (Crimson Flower)

Byleth announced their marriage to Rusalka not long after the war had ended. The two of them had grown close during their time spent fighting side by side, and though Rusalka was nervous accepting the proposal at first he soon warmed up to it. They were wed in a small and private ceremony, but received well by the people. Together, he and Byleth worked tirelessly to rebuild Fódlan anew, as well as rid the plague of Those Who Slither in the Dark. Rusalka was said to be shy in coming to terms with being the husband of one of Fódlan’s leaders, but his kindness and his intelligent strategies to rebuild communities made him popular among the people. He was also able to rebuild his former household, something that made him happy as it meant he could provide for his father as well as his partner.

Rusalka and Byleth (Silver Snow)

After ascending to the role of Archbishop of the Church of Seiros, Byleth announced that they would be wed to Rusalka. The people of Fódlan were sceptical of their union, given Rusalka’s atheism and the bad reputation of his fallen family, but the wedding took place nonetheless. Rusalka did all he could to support Byleth, but often found himself saddened by the treatment he received from other people he tried to do things for. It made him reclusive, and people soon came to remark of how Byleth was rarely seen with their husband at public events. Supposedly they were close in private, but not much was ever witnessed to prove if this was indeed the case.

Rusalka and Byleth (Amber Scales)

With the emergence of the Republic of Fódlan, with Byleth as its leader, they announced their marriage to Rusalka - to the great delight of all the Emerald Dragons. The wedding was intimate, but all of Rusalka’s former classmates attended to bring their support and love to the new couple. The two worked hard together to rebuild Fódlan from the ground up, and their union was popular among the people who saw them as a strong, stable and loving partnership. They noted how Byleth brought Rusalka out of his shell and encouraged him to grow in confidence, and that inspired confidence in the people themselves as well. Privately, Rusalka and Byleth were close and loving, and many would wonder just what they got up to when left alone. Byleth and Rusalka never revealed this, however, preferring to keep their secrets just that.

Rusalka and Byleth (Azure Moon/Verdant Wind)

With the end of the war, as Byleth took upon the leadership of Fódlan, they announced their marriage to Rusalka. The two had become close over their time spend fighting alongside one another and were wed in a small but intimate ceremony surrounded by former classmates and family. Rusalka dedicated himself to being a good partner to Byleth, and worked to restore Fódlan and his own household tirelessly. They were said to be a strong partnership, and very loving in private, but Rusalka still remained much of a recluse and would not be seen much outside of official affairs. People speculated that he worked a lot behind the scenes to support their partner who handled the social aspects of ruling for him. That was what kept their relationship so fair and balanced.

Rusalka and Curan

Curan and Rusalka remained thick as thieves with the end of the war, as they had done since they were children. Happy to have the freetime that peace brought, the two took the time to restore and rebuild their respective households before settling down. It was a while before Rusalka mustered up the courage to tell Curan his deeper feelings for him, but he was overwhelmed and overjoyed to find out that they were reciprocated. With their fathers taking care of their households, the two of them left to travel together and see the world, enjoying each other’s company and forming a strong and intimate bond that would go on to last for decades. Rusalka wrote lovingly of Curan in his diaries, and later on the two even adopted children to help carry on the legacies of both their houses. Thanks to the support of Curan’s teacher, they both lead long and healthy lives, and the people in their regions were extremely fond of them - often talking about how in love they always seemed whenever they were around each other.

Rusalka and Sephtis

Rusalka, having done much growing over the years, decided he would return to his father’s side with the end of the war. To Sephtis’ surprise he actually requested that they return to their previously ruined household, and begin to rebuild it once more. Though he knew it would be painful for them both to see the ruins of what they had once had, Rusalka wished to move past the ashes and create a stronger family with what the two of them had left. Sephtis tearfully embraced his son and promised he would support him no matter how he wished to live his life - and agreed that they should work to rebuild the household that they had lost all those years ago. Over time, house Ubel’s territory became a flourishing region once more - and the family were popular amongst the people who lived there. Sephtis was proud of his son’s maturity, and trusted in him that he would one day lead the house confidently.

Rusalka and Amaterasu

With the arrival of peace, Amaterasu enacted her grand plan with complete success - to bring her family and Rusalka’s family together. Sure enough, Rusalka and she became siblings, just as she wanted and much to Rusalka’s complete surprise. Though nervous at suddenly gaining a sibling, Rusalka did his best to be the best younger brother he could be for Amaterasu. Over time their strong bond as friends matured and deepened into an unbreakable sibling bond, and Rusalka would always be protective of his sister - even if she was the one more capable of fighting than he was. That being said, he was the one to handle any wayward bees that threatened the peace of their family home.

Rusalka and Flayn - (Amber Scales if Seteth/Sephtis Ending)

At the end of the war, Rusalka was surprised by his father’s announcement of a new relationship, but naturally he was also extremely supportive and pleased to see him so happy. It meant, however, that Rusalka also gained a new “younger” sister as well. This really took him by surprise, and at first he was incredibly nervous about having Flayn as his sister. She was delighted and even began to call him “brother” right from the start, which took some getting used to for Rusalka. Nevertheless, it soon grew on him as he and Flayn were already close friends and it didn’t take long for that bond to deepen into siblings. Rusalka was always protective of Flayn, but took a lot of delight out of showing Flayn the world and letting her experience it alongside him - seeing her happy made him feel happy as well. Though Flayn naturally outlived her brother, she always remembered their time together with great fondness.

Rusalka and Flayn - (Amber Scales Without Seteth/Sephtis and Other Routes)

Rusalka and Flayn grew close during their years fighting together in the war, and with the coming of peace they continued to spend time in each other’s company. It took a long time for Rusalka to gather up his confidence to tell Flayn his feelings for her had grown much deeper than just a friendship, but he was surprised to find out she had been waiting for him to say it for a long time. They continued to work together, deciding that they would travel a little so that Flayn could finally see the world for herself now it was safe to do so. Stories filtered back to their fathers of their exploits, and of how supportive they were of one another, but there was never any official news of marriage or children. They were just said to be very happy and trusting in each other’s company and support.

Rusalka and Bernadetta

Both known to be extremely reclusive, it came as a surprise to everyone to find out that Rusalka and Bernadetta were to be wed. The two had bonded over their mutual enjoyment of solitude, and found that they enjoyed spending time together in peaceful silence doing their own things. The company was more than enough for them, and made the moments where they did more active pursuits together much more meaningful. They decided to take up residence in Garreg Mach, where they both found enjoyment in occasionally teaching and making use of the library for their research and writings. Added to which, the silence of the library made for the perfect introvert date night.

Death Prior to Timeskip

After sustaining severe injuries in battle, Rusalka tragically passed away not long after he was brought back to Garreg Mach. His final words called out for his late mother, and an apology to his father for letting him down by dying so soon. As a result of his death, Rusalka did not make it to the promised meeting.

Etymology

In Slavic folklore, the rusalka (plural: rusalki; Cyrillic: русалка; Polish: rusałka) is a typically feminine entity, often malicious toward mankind and frequently associated with water, with counterparts in other parts of Europe, such as the French Melusine and the Germanic Nixie. Folklorists have proposed a variety of origins for the entity, including that they may originally stem from Slavic paganism, where they may have been seen as benevolent spirits. The surname “Ubel” comes from German where it was first seen in Prussia in the 13th century. It has the meaning of “evil”. “Von” is a German aristocratic particle denoting a person to be “from” a particular household.

  • Sometimes, Rusalka will go to the church to listen to the choir sing as the music is calming.
  • When thinking, sometimes he will display a colder and slightly creepier nature beneath his usual self - often when thinking of what to do to enemies. Curan explains that this is actually a hint at Rusalka's pre-trauma personality.

  • He often shortens his name to "Ru"

Recruitment

If Byleth chooses to teach the Black Eagles or Emerald Dragons in Chapter 1 then Rusalka will be automatically recruited to their team from the start. However, if Byleth chose to teach in another house, then Rusalka will not immediately agree to transfer classes straight away. Instead, Rusalka requires Byleth to have proficiency in Reason and and a high MAG stat before accepting the request to transfer. The threshold required is decreased if Byleth has supports with them.

Overall

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Rusalka’s growths place him solidly in the magical pool of classes, and much like Lysithea he is a glass cannon with his stats and can deliver a hard hit but not take too many himself. Rusalka’s magic is his biggest strength, and with the right equipment and allies around him he can easily hold up the rear of the army and provide strong ranged attacks. Though he has a hidden talent in swords, Rusalka will never do as well in pure sword based classes as he will in magical ones - but it can provide a useful backup should he run out of spells during a fight. It also widens his possible advanced classes pool. The natural progression brings him into the Warlock and Dark Bishop classes, and with a little nudge in his riding skills he can become a decent Dark Knight. His white magic pool, whilst containing a couple of useful spells, is sorely lacking and makes Gremory and any predominantly faith based classes become somewhat of a waste for his skills.

With his two hidden talents combined, however, Rusalka’s versatility with his dark magic can begin to flourish. With work on his sword skills, he can easily make for a decent Trickster. This will also give him a much needed movement boost that can get him away from enemies after attacking, and can make him useful both on the front line and at the rear. Even more useful is his second hidden talent: flying. Rusalka can become a very powerful Dark Flier, which grants him additional movement and speed that can easily prevent him from coming to too much harm whilst also doing as much damage to the enemy armies as he can.

Most interesting of all is the risk and reward that comes with Rusalka’s personal ability: Geometridae. With low HP, Rusalka has the chance to insta kill his foes with a burst of his personal crest magic, with the chance of activation increasing the lower his HP falls. Of course, this is not without the risk of losing him entirely, so pairing him with a healer nearby is essential to keep him above zero health, but the instant loss of powerful enemies without consumption of a weapon or spell can be a great boon when facing a large army.

Geometridae is a skill introduced in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It is the personal ability of Rusalka Von Ubel.

Overview

At low health, Rusalka begins to panic and the stress will cause the activation of his crest magic. This gives him a chance to use his personal skill during an enemy turn in order to defend himself from what he perceives to be mortal danger. A foe within striking distance of a normal dark magic attack will become surrounded by glowing pink moths, and instantly killed by the swarm that is unleashed upon them. The chance of this insta kill happening in a turn is increased the lower Rusalka’s health drops, with the highest chance being when he is on the verge of death himself. It is a high risk ability for this reason. However, it cannot be used to insta kill divine beasts.

Etymology

The geometer moths are moths belonging to the family Geometridae of the insect order Lepidoptera, the moths and butterflies. Their scientific name derives from the Ancient Greek geo γεω (derivative form of γῆ or γαῖα "the earth"), and metron μέτρον "measure" in reference to the way their larvae, or "inchworms", appear to "measure the earth" as they move along in a looping fashion.

Trivia

  • Rusalka's ability comes from a family of moths, whilst his father's ability refers to the study of moths as a whole.
  • As his ability hinges upon Rusalka's fragile HP and low defence, it is a very risk vs rewards personal skill to utilise.
  • Given the nature of the Crest of Abaddon's magic and the magic Rusalka has at his disposal, it is strongly implied that he uses his crest magic in order to force the enemy to commit suicide via brainwashing, rather than attack him.

Mech-Kladenets is a Staff that debuts in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It is one of the Lost' Relics that has been passed down through the Von Ubel bloodline. When used by someone who bears the Crest of Abaddon, the Combat Art Dark Magic Range +1 may be used.

Overview

The insect staff of Mech-Kladenets is forged from the remains of Abaddon the Infested’s original divine form, and as such it is irrevocably linked to the Crest of Abaddon itself. Kept within the Von Ubel family archives, it sat unused for generations due to its immense power and instability, as well as due to it being guarded by its true owner - Abaddon himself.

It is recovered in Sephtis’ paralogue, after Abaddon tries once again to take over Rusalka’s body and to reclaim his relic weapon. When he is defeated and finally destroyed, his relic is recovered by Sephtis and taken back to his office for safekeeping.

Etymology

Mech-Kladenets (Russian: меч-кладенец. | mech-Kladyenets) is a fabulous magic sword in Russian fairy tales and byliny. It’s name can be interpreted a number of ways, including: "sword of steel", "hidden sword", or "magic sword" in English translations. Also sometimes known as Samosek or Samosyok, the "self-swinging sword" is a fabulous magic sword in some Old Russian fairy tales.

Trivia

  • In mythology, Mech-Kladenets was a sword, but in game it appears as a Staff type weapon.
  • At times, the Staff's wings can be seen to flap when it is equipped.
  • The staff can be used by both Rusalka and Sephtis as both of them bear the same crest.
  • In the Paralogue, Rusalka is seen weilding the staff as Abaddon is in control of him.

The Crest of Abaddon is a game mechanic introduced in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Thought to be lost to history, it has, in fact, been passed down by the Von Ubel family.

Overview

There is no official record of the Crest of Abaddon in many of the church records and as such it remained lost to history for many generations. It’s resurgence in the Von Ubel family caused great suspicion, particularly since it was an incredibly powerful crest that granted such morally questionable abilities as mind control. As it was not passed down by the Goddess, many regard the crest with suspicion because of its otherwise unknown origins. Some speculate that Abaddon may have had connection to the Ten Elites, but this has never been proven. Given that the Church of Seiros also regards the Crest with suspicion and caution, many have come to nickname it a “heretical crest” that goes against what the original gifts from the Goddess stood for.

The crest has been passed down the Von Ubel family, but usually only appearing sporadically throughout the lineage. It was a rare occurrence when both Sephtis and Rusalka both emerged as crest bearing individuals within only one generation. Shockingly, this Crest is still strong compared to those in other lineages.

Crest Origin

Millennia ago, the Crest of Abaddon went by its original name, the Crest of Brosnya, after the real name of the Nabatean who bore that crest stone. Brosnya prolonged his lifespan by forcibly implanting his crest stone into other’s bodies in order to take them over, resulting in his crest blood corrupting many other Nabateans who were subjected to his experimentations. After multiple “reincarnations” of himself, Brosnya abandoned his original name so that he would not be hunted down by his own kind for his crimes. He chose to go instead by the name “Abaddon.”

Years later, in order to protect himself during The War of Heroes, Abaddon granted his crest blood to the Von Ubel family in exchange for hiding and protecting him. This was how the crest came to be present in humans for the first time and in subsequent generations. Abaddon’s crest lives on in his own survival as well, even when existing only as a crest stone in a jar.

Etymology

The Brosno dragon, (Russian: Бросня | Brosnya), is a lake monster which in Russian folklore is said to inhabit Lake Brosno, near Andreapol in western Russia. It is described as resembling a dragon and is the subject of a number of regional legends, some which are said to date back to the 13th century.

Rumors of a strange, giant creature living in Lake Brosno have existed for several centuries. One legend says that the lake monster scared off the Tatar-Mongol army that headed for Novgorod in the 13th century. Old legends describe an "enormous mouth" devouring fishermen. According to another legend, some Varangians wanted to hide stolen treasure in the lake. When they approached the small island, a dragon came to the surface from the lake and swallowed the island.

It was rumored in the 18th and 19th centuries that the giant creature emerged on the lake surface in the evening, but immediately submerged when people approached. It is said that during World War II the beast swallowed up a German airplane. There are witnesses who say they saw Brosnya walking in the water. Locals say that the creature turns boats upside-down and is responsible for the disappearances of people.

The Hebrew term "Abaddon" (Hebrew: אֲבַדּוֹן‎ | Avaddon) meaning "destruction", "doom", appears in the Bible as both a place of destruction and an archangel of the abyss. In the Hebrew Bible, abaddon is used with reference to a bottomless pit. In the Book of Revelation of the New Testament, an angel called Abaddon is described as the king of an army of locusts.

Trivia

  • The Crest of Abaddon appears on both Sephtis and Rusalka's profiles, but information on the crest is not shown til after completion of Sephtis' Paralogue: Dragon in the Flask
  • Dark Magic that activates the crest will become surrounded by glowing pink moths
  • It is unknown if The Crest of Abaddon can manifest other insects or just moths.
  • The Crest of Abaddon is one of several Crests linked to questionable and potentially evil origins. The others include: Geminae, Astaroth and Asmodeus
  • Abaddon's crest stone can be seen in multiple parts of the game, mostly sealed inside its jar.

Byleth is coming by the classrooms one morning when they hear a voice talking to themselves by the door. A little investigation reveals that it is Rusalka, who is trying to pep talk himself into stepping into the room. Curious, Byleth comes to ask Rusalka if he’s alright - and they accidentally scare him because he didn’t hear them approach. Rusalka immediately launches into a string of apologies assuming he must be in trouble for being in Byleth’s way. Byleth calms him carefully, and explains that they just wanted to know if he’s alright since he seems to be worried about something in the classroom. Rusalka becomes sheepish and admits it’s not something in the classroom that he’s having trouble with - it’s actually the classroom itself. He can’t get himself to step inside because he just remembers how bad it was the first time and starts to panic. Concerned, Byleth offers to help him inside, even offering him their hand so that they can step inside together. They explain that they won’t force him to go in, but that he looks like he wants to at least try and they can help with that. Rusalka gulps, but agrees to try it with Byleth there to supervise. He doesn’t take their hand, but he does take a hesitant step over the threshold, to Byleth’s praise. However, very quickly afterwards Rusalka’s breathing starts to get erratic and he begins to panic. Byleth helps him back out the classroom and sits him down, helping to calm him. They assure him he did well even for a first attempt, but Rusalka is embarrassed by the whole ordeal and runs off to hide.

Coming by Sephtis’ office, Byleth happens to find Rusalka inside studying from a book. Byleth greets him, and Rusalka replies very sheepishly. He admits he’s still a little self-conscious from their last meeting, but Byleth assures him that he needn’t worry. He did his best and they’re actually very proud of him, not ashamed of him. Rusalka is a little surprised, but thanks Byleth for their kindness. He tells Byleth that he usually studies here in the office because of his fear of the classroom and being around others, which is why they haven’t seen each other often. That being said, he assures Byleth that he always turns in his work on time and does his best with it. Byleth comes over, asking if he’s studying at the moment - and Rusalka immediately shuts the book he’s reading. He admits he was reading one of his father’s texts, but that Byleth shouldn’t look because it’s not suitable. That makes Byleth laugh a little, considering they’re the teacher and Rusalka is just a student - but Rusalka goes on to clarify that this is because the book is actually banned and Sephtis keeps it secretly for personal study. He doesn’t want to get Byleth in trouble over it. Byleth agrees, but is left very curious. Rusalka tentatively explains that he always studies class materials, but that his father encourages him to seek out different interpretations and writings to round out his learning - and often the books with those alternatives fall under materials that the Church of Seiros does not approve of, so he has to be cautious. In Amber Scales, Rusalka will also add that these are the materials that Sephtis uses in his teaching as well. Byleth, highly interested, asks if Rusalka will tell them about what he’s currently reading if they promise to keep it just to in the office. If they do a one to one teaching session, Byleth explains, it will help them find ways to better help Rusalka in a classroom setting as well. Rusalka tentatively agrees.

In Amber Scales, Rusalka will be less reluctant and will explain that he’s simply preparing for Sephtis’ next lesson since it will be on content not usually allowed to be taught by the Church. Instead of offering to stay with Rusalka as a one to one teaching session, Byleth will suggest they both prepare for the class together since they have much to learn on the topic as well.

To their surprise, Rusalka looks completely calm, and he is practicing his magic a little in the room - surrounding himself in little glowing moths. Byleth is immediately proud of Rusalka and congratulates him on making it inside. Rusalka gives Byleth a genuine smile, saying that he finally found the courage. He explains that he’s been doing a lot of reflecting and come to the realisation that if he can find the courage to fight in battles alongside his classmates then he shouldn’t let a simple classroom hold him back any longer. Byleth agrees, remarking that he has grown a lot over five years and that they’re sure he will continue to do so as well. Rusalka gets flustered at that but thanks Byleth - saying that they have come far as well and that they’d like to keep seeing their teacher grow and learn and become strong just as much as he is.

In Amber Scales, Rusalka elaborates on this further. He explains that with all they’ve learned about everything in the Church of Seiros and Fódlan as a whole, Byleth has had to do a lot of growing very quickly and he understands how much of an overwhelming experience that can be. He promises to help Byleth in coping with that, in the same way they have been helping him as his teacher.

He takes a moment to gather himself, and then a deep breath, before finally he presents Byleth with a box that contains an ornate moth hairpin. He explains very nervously that it is a pin he made himself, using his magic and some help from a local jewelsmith, to best show his deeper feelings towards Byleth. He tells them that he wants to spend the rest of his life with them, if they’ll allow it, as he feels safest when around Byleth and is forever grateful for how much Byleth has helped him grow stronger and more courageous. Rusalka sits in Sephtis’ office, carefully reading out loud from a book on magic and following the words with one finger as he does. Mostly he speaks clearly, but occasionally he starts to stumble over a few of the words. Eventually he gets completely frustrated and shuts the book, only for a voice behind him to commend his hard work. It makes Rusalka jump and the book falls to the floor as he panics, only to discover that it was his father who spoke. That makes him start to hastily apologise as he picks the book up, working himself into more and more panic. Sephtis steps in, and firmly tells his son to stop and take a breath, carefully talking him down from his panic and calming him. Rusalka calms, and thanks Sephtis, but does apologise to his father for overreacting. Sephtis assures his son that he is alright and that he should continue when he feels ready, and to not worry about the stammer. Just do his best. Rusalka agrees, asking Sephtis to stay with him as he opens the book and begins once again. He admits he feels like he’ll never get the hang of it, but if he’s asked to he’ll keep trying. Sephtis encourages him, and states that without practice he can’t grow stronger and overcome his fears. He stays close and the two of them continue reading.

Rusalka sits in his father’s office in tears, lamenting how he’s nothing more than a coward who can’t even handle a normal lesson let alone anything like a real war. Sephtis comes into the office and hearing his son crying he immediately comes over to console him. Rusalka confessed he panicked trying to enter the Black Eagle classroom and threw up again, causing a commotion. He’s not sure he’ll ever get the courage to join the class properly no matter how much he tries. Sephtis reminds him that he still tried, and considering that this is the first time in several months that Rusalka has tried to enter the classroom since the first time it does actually show immense progress on his part. Rusalka sniffles and asks Sephtis if he is disappointed in him because of his condition, which Sephtis strongly admonishes. He tells Rusalka that not only is he immensely proud of him as a student and as a son for all he does to better himself, he also knows that his mother would also say the same. This makes Rusalka smile very quietly and he thanks his father for his belief in him.

In Amber Scales, Rusalka admits he misses his mother and blames himself that she’s gone. Sephtis shakes his head and hugs his son, telling him that there is no one else to blame but the one who tried to take all their lives - and that that was not Rusalka. He encourages Rusalka to move on from his guilt and to remember his mother did all she could to save his life - and that that is something you come to understand once you become a parent. The desire to protect the child you love. Rusalka blushes, but thanks Sephtis for always being there for him and never giving up on him.

In Crimson Flower and Amber Scales, Rusalka approaches Sephtis to ask if they can visit Lilith’s memorial together. Sephtis asks why he is holding a book and Rusalka asks to explain when they get there. They visit the memorial, and Sephtis watches as Rusalka proceeds to read from a book without hesitation or stuttering whilst doing so. It’s an old folk tale, and Sephtis remarks that he recognises the story as one Lilith used to read to Rusalka when he was a child. Rusalka explains that he wanted to improve his speech and confidence enough to be able to read it back to his mother without messing it up. He is elated that he managed it, but immediately panics seeing Sephtis tear up. He rushes to his father, apologising over and over for upsetting him, but Sephtis explains he has nothing to apologise for. He is crying because he is so proud of Rusalka. That only makes Rusalka blush and the two exchange a hug together at the memorial.

If Sephtis’ paralogue has been completed, the scene continues on a little more. Sephtis admits he’s happy that Abaddon can no longer bring their family harm, and that now the two of them can move on and rebuild their lives however they wish to. In particular he asks Rusalka to pursue his dreams and keep growing strong. Rusalka agrees, but asks that Sephtis remember to find happiness for himself as well, because he’s proud of his father for how much strength he has too. He admires him. That makes Sephtis even more emotional and the two both agree to keep rebuilding and working together.

Rusalka approaches Nimue cautiously one afternoon as she’s doing some stretches, but jumps when she calls out to him because she’s quite loud. She notices and comes over, apologising for scaring him but remarking that he appears to be very stressed and nervous. Rusalka admits he is, but he’s always this way so it’s just normal feelings for him. Nimue looks worried, saying that it can’t be healthy for him to always be this high strung and it’s probably affecting his sleep and metabolism and many other factors. Rusalka is surprised, admitting he doesn’t sleep very well either but that’s likely for other reasons, and that he’s lost a lot of weight. Nimue folds her arms and thinks for a moment, then gets an idea. She explains that she always starts her day with warm up stretches to loosen her body and to wake herself up and that maybe Rusalka should start doing the same in the mornings too. Rusalka protests but Nimue insists, saying that the exercise is good for clearing your mind of worrying thoughts and won’t be too extreme for him. To prove her point, she shows Rusalka a few of her basic stretches and invites him to do the same. Though he admits he’s not in the right clothing for this Rusalka tries his best, but is discouraged by how inflexible he is and how quickly he tires. Nimue reassures him that it’s not about how much he does or how flexible he is, but rather that he lets it clear his head and focuses on what makes him feel good each day, adding more and more as he feels ready. Rusalka agrees, promising to try.

He doesn’t disturb her, but instead he comes to stand with her and do a few of his own as well. She notices and is noticeably excited about it because he already looks like he’s doing so much better. When they’re done, she asks him if the exercises have been helping at all. He says that they give him a feeling of routine and something to help him wake up in the morning - which can help if he has a nightmare and needs grounding. So even if he’s not sure they’ll cure everything, they do appear to be doing something. Nimue is overjoyed to be able to help him a little. She suggests that, if he wants to, they stretch together sometime so that she can check he’s doing things right and not hurting himself. She then jokes that the next step is to teach Rusalka to dance - which immediately makes him panic. Nimue promises she was just joking, which does calm him somewhat. The two of them decide they’ll go and get some breakfast together since all the warm up exercises have made them both hungry. Rusalka thanks her, because he’d never have thought of this as a way to help himself, and he appreciates having her different perspective. Nimue gets flustered and tells him not to worry, she’ll do anything to help a friend and fellow classmate.

In the main four routes, Curan approaches Rusalka and excitedly greets him, and for once Rusalka does not react with complete panic like he does with other people. Curan comes over, saying he’s happy to meet his old friend again since he hasn’t seen him in some years. The two had fallen out of contact somewhat after the incident with Rusalka’s family collapsing and the issues Curan’s father faced with House Gloucester. Rusalka tells Curan he had been meaning to write more often, but didn’t want to just send constantly negative letters because of all he was going through. Curan explains he’d have accepted any letter from Rusalka if it meant he could hear from him, but he understands. He asks how he’s been and the two exchange their life stories to catch up with one another. Rusalka offers condolences for Curan’s father’s arrest and asks if anything can be done about it. Curan admits he’s uncertain but that he’d do anything to break him out of there if he could - though he admits his teacher back home has been strict with him and making sure he behaves himself both at home and at Garreg Mach. Rusalka laughs a little at that and admits that while his father hasn’t been strict exactly, he has been having him study hard so that he’s ready to attend classes and working on his confidence as well. So it appears that they both have someone in their lives keen for them to work hard. Rusalka does lament that the two of them will be in different classes this year, unless one of them transfers, because of coming from different regions - but Curan assures him that they can still make it work, like they’ve always done. Saying that, he invites Rusalka to come and have dinner with him so they can continue catching up.

In Amber Scales the scene is much the same, however at the end Rusalka tells Curan he’s happy that they’ve found an unofficial class in which they can be together. Curan also agrees that he’s excited to learn alongside his childhood friend, and that they still have so much to catch up on. As such, he invites Rusalka to come to the dining hall with him and have dinner so they can continue catching up. Rusalka happily agrees and the two leave together.

Later on, Rusalka and Curan end up running into one another again. Both of them are attempting to skip their respective classes, and when Curan tells Rusalka this he tells him to follow him. As it turns out, Rusalka knows a lot of very good places to hide around Garreg Mach where they won’t be found by anyone else. Curan, impressed, asks how he knows all this and Rusalka explains that in the eight years he’s been living at the Academy he’s found every single hiding place he can use to avoid people if he wants to be alone. This includes hiding spaces that even his father doesn’t know exist. He takes Curan up to a disused tower room, where there’s evidence to suggest that Rusalka has used this room before - mostly in the form of books and the moths all over the walls and up in the ceiling. Curan is impressed, immediately making himself at home as he sits down on an old chair and joking that they can make this their own secret hideout. Rusalka is surprised at first, wondering if they’re not too old for secret hideouts and bases - but Curan tells him there’s never a “too old” for that kind of thing. Since they used to do this all the time as kids, why should it change now? This can be their special place and a place they can both go to when they don’t want to be around people who upset them or annoy them. After all, they could never get annoyed or tired of each other. Rusalka agrees, but is interrupted by a sneeze and suggests that if they’re going to use this place more regularly they’ll need to clean it up first. This makes Curan laugh but he does agree, the two of them spending the rest of the afternoon cleaning and decorating the room and making it into their own space.

In Amber Scales, the two discuss that they can still use the classroom and enjoy that they’ve got that as a safe space as well, but both agree that somewhere just for the two of them is also ideal. That way they can talk about more personal things or things they don’t quite want the whole class knowing just yet.

In the post time skip of Amber Scales, Rusalka pulls Curan aside at Garreg Mach, asking him if he has a moment to come with him. Curan tells him he always has time to spend with Rusalka and asks him what he needs. Rusalka takes him along a corridor and up some stairs, and Curan soon realises where they’re going. Sure enough, they end up back at the secret room where they had spent so much time together during their time as students. It’s dusty and there’s some rubble, but Rusalka explains he’s checked and the room is still safe to be inside. They can clean it up and redecorate it and use it once again. Curan is overjoyed and suggests they get to work on it immediately - which they both happily get to doing. Once done, they sit together to catch their breath, and Rusalka comments how this room still feels safe somehow - even though the truths of Garreg Mach and its founders have now come to light. He explains that it feels like in this room no other parts of the school exist, and that here it’s just them both and he feels safest that way. Curan agrees, and promises that they’ll stick together from now on and won’t have to worry about being apart again - inside or outside of this room. Curan explains that their friendship feels stronger than ever now, and that they both just need to keep going to make sure they make it to peace together - which Rusalka quickly agrees to. He admits that with Curan beside him, the war is much less frightening and he knows that they’ll make it to the end. As they go quiet, the two gently hold hands, enjoying each others’ company and closeness.

Both running late for class, Rusalka and Nevar come sprinting from opposite ends of the corridor, both completely wrapped up in their own panic, overthinking and rushed thoughts they both end up crashing headlong into each other. Nevar falls backwards and is left dazed, panicking because banging heads with Rusalka was very painful and he doesn't like to be in pain. Rusalka is shocked and overwhelmed by the sudden pain as well, but mostly out of confusion as to what just happened. They both are quickly overwhelmed by their own emotions, and before either of them stop to think about who they may have just run into, they both instinctively fire dark magic spells at each other. The magic causes the corridor to fill with smoke, knocking banners off of the walls and cracking the brickwork. As the chaos clears, they both realise just who they were attacking, and that causes yet more panic. Rusalka is quick to start apologising profusely, and sobbing about how he's probably hurt a friend and that they're both going to get into immense trouble for all the damage they've caused. Nevar, however, gets annoyed that they're going to get into trouble and that they'll probably get yelled at for this. He starts to get angry and raise his voice, which only makes Rusalka cry harder. The two are both complete disasters til Sephtis appears, clearing up the smoke and repairing the damage with magic, he tells the both of them to take a moment to calm down. He's not angry, and they both will need to settle their differences with this once they're both calmer and have cleared their heads.

Later, Rusalka and Nevar meet after class. They are much calmer than they were before and they both take a moment to collect themselves, staring at each other awkwardly as they don't know how to initiate the conversation. Eventually Nevar relents and begrudgingly apologises for attacking Rusalka and for scaring him. He admits he overreacted and that he was just confused because it hurt being bumped into. Rusalka also quickly apologises and admits that he wasn't looking where he was going, which probably lead to them both running into each other. He also apologises for his dark magic too, because he was scared by the noise and pain and lost control. Nevar also admits that he wasn't looking where he was going, because he was thinking about not wanting to be late. The two realise that they were both completely distracted at the time and that it was a complete accident that they happened to bang into each other in that moment. Since neither of them are at fault, it actually makes them both laugh a little. Reassured, Rusalka promises to be more careful next time so that they don't clash again, and Nevar agrees. They both decide they should walk to class together next time, so that they both get there on time.

One night, Hubert catches Rusalka in one of the corridors of Garreg Mach and asks him what he’s doing up so late. Rusalka immediately panics and swarms of moths surround him defensively as he tries to stammer out the explanation that he was going to the Dining Hall to retrieve a book that he accidentally left there. Hubert interrupts him and orders him to stop the panicking and sniffling, which shuts Rusalka up from rambling but doesn’t stop him sniffling and shaking with fear. He reveals that he found the book already and picked it up, suspecting that it belonged to one of the Black Eagles because it was not a regular Church approved book. Rusalka thanks him and takes it back, and Hubert instructs him not to be so careless with banned literature as it could land Edelgard in trouble. Rusalka tears up at that, apologising for potentially threatening her and begging Hubert not to do anything to him for it. Hubert rolls his eyes and again orders him to stop whining, remarking how pitiful it looks for someone from a family as notorious as the Ubel to be snivelling in front of him like this - if anything they should both be talking as equals given their affinity for darker and dirtier tasks within the Empire. Rusalka nods shakily, but admits he knows he’s already a disappointment on that front but that he is trying. Hubert merely sighs in disappointment and takes his leave, reminding Rusalka one last time before he goes to be more vigilant.

In Crimson Flower, Hubert finds Rusalka among his moths once more, but as he approaches he notices that Rusalka doesn’t jump at the sight of him this time. He’s somewhat impressed and asks if Rusalka isn’t scared of him anymore. There’s a brief silence, and then Rusalka replies in an emotionless tone that he knows Hubert’s intentions - and therefore has no reasons to fear him. Hubert questions him further, and Rusalka explains that if he knows something’s intentions, he can find logic that helps him overcome his fear. Rusalka knows Hubert merely intends to find ways in which he can ensure Edelgard’s victory, which for Rusalka means that he’s going to come and ask him about using his crest magic for the army. Since he knows this, he isn’t scared of Hubert. A little impressed, Hubert compliments Rusalka for becoming stronger over the years and learning to become useful for the Imperial Army. Rusalka shakes his head, explaining he’s still scared of a lot of things about the war and the future, and that he won’t use his magic because he doesn’t like what it does. All he’s learnt is how not to be afraid of Hubert. Hubert sighs and admits he’d hoped that Rusalka would agree to use his magic willingly since he doesn’t want to have to order him or force him. Rusalka merely shrugs and says he’ll see if he can find a way to overcome it, but that that is unlikely because of his morals. Hubert admits morals are a weakness, but Rusalka merely replies that they’re a weakness he’s willing to have because he cares for others. Realising they won’t reach a complete mutual conclusion, Hubert agrees to disagree and takes his leave.

One afternoon Flayn comes by Sephtis’ office and is happy to find that Rusalka is there. She asks to speak with him but Rusalka is very cautious about letting her in. Flynn insists she’s there for harmless reasons, telling him through the door that she saw him at the monastery’s choir practice this morning watching from behind a pillar and wanted to know if he wanted to join in next time. Rusalka thanks her for the offer but declines, saying he’s not looking to join the choir. Flynn interjects and asks him what exactly he was doing hanging around the church then - a little more suspicious in her tone. This makes Rusalka more nervous, stammering as he admits that he just really wanted to listen to the choir singing because he thinks that their music is pretty and calms him. Flayn is taken by surprise at that, and apologises for her misunderstanding. She admits she thought it strange that Rusalka never comes to the monastery for prayer, and it was nice to see him listening to the choir and thought it was Rusalka taking steps to get confident enough to come to prayer one day. Rusalka gets flustered and incoherent for a moment, trying to stammer out the right words. As Flayn tries to be encouraging, he eventually blurts out that he doesn’t go to prayer because he doesn’t believe in the Goddess. Saying that he shuts and locks the door so Flayn can’t come in. Left very taken aback, Flayn doesn’t know what to say and hopes that she just misheard him.

After another choir practice, Flayn sees Rusalka leaving his hiding space and chases him down to confront him. She asks him if he enjoyed the practice and he admits it was pretty, but that he’d really like to leave. She insists he stay, taking him up to the altar and to the statues of the four saints, despite his protests. Firstly she apologises for how their last meeting ended, but she can’t help but feel she misheard his last words. Rusalka admits he can’t remember them because he was panicking - and Flayn reminds him that he said that he didn’t believe in the Goddess. For once, Rusalka is completely calm in his reaction and confirms that that is correct - he doesn’t believe in the Goddess and his family have always been separate from the church in their beliefs. Flayn is mortified and asks him what he could possibly believe in if not the Goddess. Rusalka shrugs and says that he just believes in the strength of humans and that that can be good or bad depending on their individual natures - there’s no deity pulling the strings. Flayn shakes her head in disbelief, pointing to the saint statues and asking Rusalka if he also doesn’t believe that they are real. Rusalka takes a moment and looks at the statues, thinking, and then tells her he knows that they were real people - but that he thinks that their power came from themselves and their race and not from a deity’s blessing. Flayn looks understandably both offended and incredibly suspicious. She affirms that the Saints were indeed real, and that their power drew both from their own strength and their strong faith in the Goddess to guide and lead them, both aspects were vital and very real. Rusalka politely listens, saying that he isn’t here to change her mind and that she’s allowed to have her faith - assuring her he’s not intending to insult it either. Really, he’d just like to return to his room. Flayn finds this odd, but lets him go, muttering to herself that she wonders if Rusalka knows more than he lets on and that is what inspires his odd disbelief.

In the post time skip of all routes except Crimson Flower and Amber Scales, Flayn approaches Rusalka standing in the ruined monastery, asking him what he’s doing. Rusalka is quiet for a moment, and then tells her he is pretending that he can hear church choir singing, as it would have been Choir Practice at this time once. He misses it, and thinks that thinking about it will help him feel calm. Flayn agrees, asking if he knows the words to any of the songs that they might be able to sing together and have their own choir practice. Rusalka hesitates, because he admits he’s not very confident at singing, but seeing Flayn so upset makes him want to try. The two sing together, and afterwards he admits he actually does feel better for singing. Flayn says a prayer to thank the goddess for the song, but notices that Rusalka doesn’t join in with that. She asks him if still, after all that they have witnessed and learned, how he can still remain without faith. Rusalka seems to be thinking things over, then replies that he isn’t about to ask her to stop believing in the Goddess, so why must she insist he start? Flayn is rather taken aback and doesn’t know what to say to that. Rusalka continues, explaining that he has reasons - and maybe one day he can tell her but certainly not right now - for why he is the way that he is, but she’s not entitled to know them. He doesn’t think that they should judge each other over faith, but rather their friendship should be decided by other factors. Flayn thinks it over, and then agrees - apologising for being pushy towards him. She thanks him for being respectful of the Church of Seiros even if he doesn’t believe in the Goddess, and hopes that their friendship can continue despite her misgivings. Rusalka admits he’d like to still be friends with her, and forgives her, letting the two part on good terms.

In Amber Scales, Rusalka catches sight of Flayn standing amongst the ruins of the Monastery and approaches her, asking her if she is alright. She admits that she’s not alright, she’s incredibly conflicted with everything. Given all that she has been through, she looks to Rusalka and confesses she is having a severe crisis of faith. With all that they’ve both learned, she asks Rusalka if he feels good about himself for having known so much all along and for not believing - thinking he must be here to gloat that he was right. Rusalka shakes his head, and he apologises to her for not telling her more before - but he feared the consequences. He goes on to say she isn’t wrong for having faith and for believing in those she trusted and loves. Though he cannot understand the full extent of her conflict and worry, he does wish to help her through it and at the very least provide her with some company and as someone who will listen to her. She thanks him, and then suddenly hugs him and clings as she starts to cry. Flayn admits that as Saint Cethleann she thought she was acting in the best interests of the people and doing good - but seeing what Seiros has become and learning of what she did to humans and to her own family she now feels responsible for it all as well. She worries she will never forgive herself for this either. Rusalka hesitates at first, but then hugs her back. He tells her that her past actions will only define her now if she chooses to let them. The best she can do is to continue to work hard to make a better world alongside the friends she has made. To use her new knowledge and truth to change and show she is not just to be judged by her previous actions. Flayn is surprised, but agrees. She promises to work harder to be stronger and asks if he will help her - to which Rusalka agrees, as Flayn is a close friend and fellow classmate of his after all.

One evening, Rusalka is attempting to sneak into the library after house to find a book that he wants for his studies. He’s trying to be as quiet as possible, but talking to himself to try and keep calm. Holding his homework papers in his hands, he makes his way along the shelves staring at the books and reading the spines for the right book. He doesn’t notice that there’s a second voice doing much the same, and as he reaches for his book he finds another hand is also reaching for it. He and Bernadette make eye contact and both shriek in surprise. Immediately both Bernadetta and Rusalka panic and fall over, their papers and the books on the shelf getting scattered everywhere around them. Surrounded by mess, both panic even more and start hastily trying to gather their things whilst apologising and trying to take the blame for everything. Hearing the sound of footsteps they both suspect that they’re about to be caught being out of bed late, and hastily try to get up and flee the library before whoever it is arrives. They end up grabbing the wrong paperwork, and it’s only after Rusalka has run back to his room that he notices that he’s picked up Bernadetta’s personal writings and not his homework. He ends up reading them by accident because he doesn’t recognise the words - and realises he needs to return them to her as soon as possible. Worse still - he realises that his diary got lost in the mess and he wonders if she’s picked it up - and what she’ll think if she accidentally reads some of it. He thinks about going right away, but then hears the footsteps again and decides against it.

The next time Bernadetta and Rusalka meet it’s daytime and both appear to be trying to work up the courage to speak to each other. Rusalka tries it, and Bernadetta immediately launches into apologies because, she confesses, she accidentally read parts of his diary when looking through everything that she picked up because at first she thought it was hers and then didn’t recognise what was written. Rusalka goes bright red with embarrassment and asks her to forget everything that she’s read - but then admits that he’s read her writings too because he had the same problem. In the same way, Bernadetta goes bright red with embarrassment as well and begs him to forget too. Hurriedly they give each other back their respective things and agree that they’ll never speak of it again. That is, until Bernadetta mutters to herself that she found Rusalka’s writings to be worrying because he sounds so very sad and lonely in his diary and that she understands that feeling. Rusalka tenses, saying he’d just asked her to forget about that - but gives in when she gives him a look and admits his diary is part of his therapy and he writes how he feels in it so that he doesn’t get bottled up with emotions. Bernadetta says that’s a good coping mechanism, and she uses her creative writing in much the same way. Rusalka tells her that her story writing is actually really good, which makes Bernadetta self-conscious and nervous about it but she does thank him. She asks him tentatively if he’s ever done creative writing, and he admits quietly that he writes poetry but mostly burns the scripts once he’s written them as he doesn’t want them found. This surprises Bernadetta, though she admits she understands the feeling of wanting to burn your manuscripts too, and after an awkward pause between the two she asks if she can read one sometime. Rusalka agrees, but immediately regrets it quietly to himself as now he’ll need to write a poem that he feels confident enough to share.

In the post time skip, Rusalka approaches Bernadetta asking if she has a moment to speak with him. She agrees, asking him what she can do for him - only to be presented with a poem that he has written. Rusalka explains that it took him a long time because he needed to write about something that wasn’t just his trauma, as he didn’t want to give her something incredibly personal and potentially depressing - and that also he spent a long time writing multiple drafts because he didn’t want her to hate what he wrote and felt very self conscious about it all. Bernadetta is touched that he remembered, and asks if she can read it. She takes the poem, and reads it aloud. Rusalka’s poem is about a nervous person who accidentally ends up meeting someone else who is nervous and scared too, and how the two of them overcome their nerves and slowly become friends. She compliments the poem, and says she can see who it’s about - happy that Rusalka considers her a friend to him but admitting that that makes her a little embarrassed. Rusalka apologises, but Bernadetta cuts him off because she doesn’t want him to take it wrong. She’s just never had someone write a poem about her before and she feels very flattered. Bernadetta suggests she write something for him in return now, and promises that she’ll make him a story. Rusalka admits he’d never had someone write a story about him before either, and maybe they can keep exchanging things this way. After all, it’s always nice to receive something thoughtful from others. They both agree to keep writing for each other.

Rusalka is in his father’s office reading one morning when there comes a knock at the door. Rusalka hesitates to answer but when he discovers that it’s just Oculis, who he knows as Professor Raven, he is polite and lets him in. He is less nervous with him compared to with other students and even offers to make him some tea and join him. Oculis tells him he was just here to drop off some marking to Septhis, but appreciates the offer and decides to stay and keep Rusalka company - though he does ask him why he isn’t in class this morning since that’s where all the other students are. Rusalka looks saddened and lowers his head, admitting he tried to go this morning but that he got too nervous and panicked and couldn’t make it into the classroom, so he came to the office to do private study instead. Oculis is a little saddened at the news, but understands. He asks Rusalka how far he got this time, and Rusalka tells him he made it to the doorway but couldn’t actually step inside without having trouble. Oculis still praises him, saying that that’s further than Rusalka has gone before in his steps to recovery and overcoming his fears. Rusalka blushes and smiles, thanking him for his encouragement, but he knows he still has a long way to go before he’s ever back to normal. Sometimes, he admits, he doesn’t think he’ll ever be the same again because of what he’s gone through. Oculis nods in understanding, but reminds him that as long as he does his best then that is what is most important - and that he should remember he isn’t alone in this. Rusalka agrees, but wishes he could recover faster so that his father would be happy. Oculis insists he’ll be alright, and to take his time, and if he ever needs someone to talk to aside from his father then he can always come to him - after all he has known Rusalka’s father a very long time and knows him very well. Rusalka remembers that Oculis was his father’s teacher as well, and that makes him happy. The two continue talking and part on good terms.

In Amber Scales, Oculis and Rusalka meet once again in deeper Abyss, after Oculis and Taliesin have fled from Garreg Mach. Rusalka asks to speak with Oculis and explains that he has a lot of questions he wants to ask but doesn’t know where to begin. Oculis invites him to a private room and the two sit down for tea and to talk, which is how Rusalka begins his questioning. He admits that now it makes sense how Oculis could have taught both himself and Sephtis and still appear to look young. Oculis agrees, thinking aloud that perhaps he should have made his disguise age a little to look more convincing. Rusalka then asks if, considering what Oculis is and who he is friends with, he knows about why the Ubel family fell and his condition. Oculis is more hesitant to answer this time but admits that he only found out after the incident because Sephtis told him, and that he didn’t know that the family were connected to Nabateans beforehand. This seems to satisfy Rusalka’s questions for a bit and he stays silent, thinking it all over. Then he asks Oculis if he knows about Abaddon in the jar - and Oculis agrees that he’s seen it and knows it’s there, but that he’s not told anyone else that he knows. In particular, considering his close relations with Taliesin, he doesn’t want him to find out. Rusalka understands, admitting that he had been nervous of Nabateans like Taliesin and Flayn because they are from the same species as Abaddon at first, but that he has come to change his views. He realises he was wrong to judge them that way and that he hopes they’ll forgive him if he’s done anything negative towards them. Oculis praises Rusalka’s growth and change of views, but assures him that he hasn’t heard or seen anything that would suggest he has done anything outwardly wrong towards them. Rusalka is grateful to hear that and relaxes.

In Amber Scales’ post time skip, Rusalka comes to see Oculis to ask him how he’s doing. Oculis thanks him, and remarks how much Rusalka has grown up over the past five years. Not just physically, though Oculis does joke that Rusalka is quickly becoming the spitting image of Sephtis, but also emotionally and mentally. Rusalka blushes and thanks him for the compliment, and admits he feels he is doing a lot better even though sometimes he still gets scared. However, he disagrees that he looks like his father. If anything, he admits, he feels he has a lot of his mother’s features. This makes Oculis laugh and look him over, and he agrees he can see a lot of Lilith in Rusalka as well - which is also a delight to see. He tells Rusalka that he taught his mother too, which Rusalka knew of course, and that he misses her as well. They have a moment of reflection, and Rusalka admits that he knows his dad still misses Lilith a lot as well. Things won’t ever go back to what they were before, and he doesn’t think he’ll ever be the person he was before. But, he continues, he thinks that that’s alright and so long as he stays strong he can make things better for all of them. Oculis agrees, and tells him that that’s a trait he’s grown himself - not just taken from his mother and father - and a very good trait at that. The two of them continue to reminisce and speculate about the future together.

Rusalka is cautious, immediately asking her if it is because he has done something wrong and asking if she’s angry with him. Edelgard assures him that he isn’t in any trouble at all and that actually she wants to ask him about his family. Rusalka is still hesitant, admitting that that is a hard topic for him - which Edelgard also understands. She explains how she knows that Rusalka’s family was once charged with preventing soldiers from abandoning their orders or from defecting to the enemy through the use of their crest magic, which Rusalka agrees was the case. She then asks Rusalka if he has ever used it himself or seen it used, which makes Rusalka go very quiet. An awkward silence descends between them both before Rusalka quietly asks if Edelgard knows how his family fell, to which she admits she knows some of the details of it but not all. Rusalka tells her he doesn’t want to give all the details as it still hurts, but that he has felt what it is like to be used by his family’s crest magic and he wouldn’t be comfortable exposing soldiers to that like they were in previous wars. Edelgard seems thoughtful of this and thanks him for his input, asking that they speak again on this another time. Rusalka agrees, but as she leaves he admits he’s nervous and worried about her potentially forcing him to use it.

She smiles at them, letting one land on her finger and talking to it with genuine interest - asking if it belongs to Rusalka or Sephtis. Rusalka then approaches, apologising for interrupting her, but she welcomes him to join her and asks how he is. He admits he’s been thinking about their last talk and is a little nervous. With a little prompting, Rusalka confesses he’s worried Edelgard will order him to use his crest magic someday, and he isn’t sure if he’d ever be able to do it. He knows what it’s like and the result leaves people like he is now - terrified and traumatised. Edelgard puts her hand up to stop him talking, and tells him straight away that she has no intention of asking that of him, nor will she be asking Sephtis to be using the magic either. Rusalka is surprised, but listens as Edelgard continues to explain. When the time comes for battle, she says, she wants those who join and fight by her side to do so willingly and without the need for coercion or force. She hopes that her ideals and goals will inspire others to join her, as well as her strength as an emperor one day. Rusalka listens carefully, and he agrees that that is the best way to ensure a strong army during and after battle. He then adds that when the time comes, he would like to be confident enough to stand and fight alongside her - which she admits she finds very touching, and encourages him to work hard ready for whenever that day will come.

That’s when a voice speaks up from nearby suggesting Albinean Berry tea as a dessert tea. At first, Ferdinand doesn’t recognise the voice and is confused, turning around and finding Rusalka there. He’s surprised, and asks Rusalka to repeat himself, which makes the boy a little worried but he does as told. He explains that Albinean Berry tea is sweet but not overbearing and makes a good alternative to a dessert after a heavy meal as it won’t make you feel like you've overeaten. Rusalka then notices that it wasn’t one of the teas that Ferdinand had laid out and apologises for overstepping and interrupting him. Ferdinand assures him that it’s no trouble, and thanks him for his input, saying its good to get another person’s opinion sometimes when it comes to things that you enjoy, and saying that Ferdinand offers Rusalka to join him for tea as well. Rusalka takes a moment, but works up the courage to accept and joins him. He admits he just really likes Albinean Berry Tea a lot and usually has it when he doesn’t feel like he has room for dessert and that the sweetness helps him when he feels anxious. Ferdinand remarks that he has seen how much of an anxious person Rusalka is, which makes the boy sputter on his tea a little in embarrassment, but Ferdinand is kind. When Ferdinand speaks to him Rusalka almost hits the roof in shock because he had no idea anyone was nearby. Immediately he turns around and apologises profusely to Ferdinand for his reaction, and Ferdinand does his best to calm him and reassure him. Realising that Rusalka is panicking over entering the classroom, he suggests that one way to perhaps help his anxiety is to have a nice memory to associate with the Black Eagles Classroom rather than the embarrassing one. Saying that, he gets an idea and asks Rusalka to join him for tea inside. Rusalka hesitates, but does his best to muster up the courage and step inside once Ferdinand goes in. He finds Ferdinand making tea, and he’s served a cup and asked to try it. Rusalka thanks him, asking what kind of tea it is and taking a small sip. Ferdinand comes to join him and explains that it’s the anxiety tea that he mentioned last time they met - and sure enough Rusalka starts to find himself calming the more he drinks the tea. He thanks Ferdinand, and he admits that this is much nicer than the last time he came into the classroom. The two begin to have a genuine conversation and Rusalka calms down completely. When they are done with tea, Rusalka thanks Ferdinand again for giving him something nice to associate with the classroom, and that hopefully he’ll feel better about coming inside from now on. Ferdinand offers that they can have tea together more often if it will help as well, which Rusalka accepts.

Hideaki frowns, quietly remarking that he recognises Rusalka as being in his house, but barely around. He thinks a little more, then remembers his name and says it out loud. This makes Rusalka jump from where he’d gone to hide, and Hideaki comes over to him. He apologises, admitting he’s nervous around people too because he finds them frightening. Rusalka starts profusely apologising for disturbing him, and begs Hideaki not to hurt him for it. Hideaki shakes his head and assures him he won’t, but asks what would make Rusalka think he’d do such a thing - though he looks as if he already knows the answer. Rusalka stammers out that he expects everyone to hurt him, but Hideaki takes it a little too personally and asks if it’s because he’s a Hanzō. Rusalka gasps when he recognises the name. He apologises even more, and asks Hideaki not to tell anyone he messed up because he knows that his dad and Hideaki’s dad are old school friends and he doesn’t want to cause issues between them. Before Hideaki can even reply, Rusalka runs off and leaves him behind. He tells Rusalka he spoke to Sephtis about it, wincing when Rusalka immediately assumes he’ll be in trouble for that, who explained to him that he and Tanaka haven’t been friends for years because of how Tanaka turned out - which Hideaki unfortunately understands all too well. Rusalka calms down at that, and apologises for overreacting. He wonders what made Sephtis decide to cut off ties from Tanaka, however, considering the Hanzō family are in a similar position to their family and very wealthy and influential. Hideaki hesitates, but decides to explain carefully to Rusalka about his brother and the things he’s done to him and others. When he’s done, he admits he’s glad that Rusalka’s family is no longer connected to his via Tanaka, as it will be much safer for them in the long run. Rusalka agrees, and the two decide it’s probably for the best that way. Rusalka thanks Hideaki for being understanding with him and the two do part on good terms.

Her strong reaction makes him panic as well - and they both end up screaming at one another like they’ve seen a ghost. Lysithea lashes out at Rusalka for scaring her and calls him several names, which makes Rusalka break down crying because he just wanted to help her and that he’s really sorry. He admits he could see she was scared of the dark and that he understands what that’s like and was trying to find a way he could help. That makes Lysithea even more embarrassed and she tries to deny that she needs help and that he’s just making bad assumptions of her - leaving Rusalka in tears. He steps away, apologising for bothering her and promising he’ll go away and let her carry on. To show that, he uses his magic to summon a few moths that glow around him - lighting the way for him and acting like a night light. Lysithea realises he can help her with those, and calls for him to come back. She asks him about the moths and if he can use them to help her get her book back - begrudgingly admitting that he’s right and she is scared of the dark but that she really needs her book back. She hopes he’ll forgive her for lashing out because she was scared, and admits that she was wrong to say nasty things to him. Rusalka forgives her, and says he understands that sometimes we act irrational when we’re scared and worried and that he’s lashed out at times too because of it. He tells her he’s been thinking of ways to try and help, and carefully presents her with a small hair clip in the shape of a moth - much the same as one he wears. He explains that it isn't a real moth, but the clip has a small charm on it that will make it glow in the dark a little. It’s not quite the same as a full light, but it’s still better than total darkness. Lysithea is sceptical at first, but takes it to a darker corner to look and sure enough it does glow. She thanks him for his kindness and thoughtfulness, and promises that she’ll do something in return for him - even though Rusalka assures her that he doesn’t need anything from her. She insists, and offers to take him for some dessert in the dining hall and Rusalka decides to politely accept.

With Hollis Raines

Rusalka approaches Hollis one afternoon, catching the man by surprise. Hollis jokes that he didn’t think Rusalka ever left Sephtis’ office, and Rusalka apologises and admits it took him all morning to talk himself into going out and finding him. Hollis gets a little sheepish at that, but asks Rusalka how he can help. Rusalka takes a moment, flustered and muttering about how he doesn’t want to be trouble, but he eventually admits that he wanted to get some advice on drawing from Hollis - because he’s seen him drawing around Garreg Mach and knows that he’s good at it. Hollis is surprised but happy to help, and the two begin to discuss how to draw moths - using Rusalka’s moth Silkie as a reference. Rusalka explains he wants to draw a moth and make it into a gift for his father, and at the mention of Sephtis Hollis becomes somewhat flustered but admits he thinks that that is a thoughtful gift. He tries to gather himself and start the teaching, and Rusalka accidentally lets a little of his true self slip and confess Hollis looks more terrified of him than he is of Hollis. That only concerns Hollis more, who gets flustered and quickly turns the topic back to moths. This seems to return Rusalka to some normality, and the two continue their art lesson.

Later in the year, Hollis comes bursting into Sephtis’ office without knocking, looking for a place to procrastinate his tasks from Seteth without being caught. He explains all this to the room as he lets himself in, thinking nobody is there, but accidentally startles Rusalka from where he was reading in the corner. There’s a moment of panic, til Rusalka realises that it’s just Hollis and begins to calm. Hollis remarks that he’s known Rusalka since he was a kid and that there’s no need for him to be so frightened like that. Rusalka nods, admitting that he knows his fear is irrational but a result of being nervous around all people - it’s nothing personal. Hollis understands, and does say that Rusalka is a lot better than he was when he was younger at least, which makes Rusalka smile. Rusalka agrees to let Hollis stay in the office and not rat him out to Seteth, and thanks him for his help before. He shows Hollis on Sephtis’ desk where he now has a framed picture of the moth Hollis drew, next to his family portrait and a small embroidered handkerchief. Hollis is somewhat distracted by the latter item, which causes him to blush, but he ignores it and enthusiastically tells Rusalka that he knew Sephtis would like the art and that he should be proud of it. Rusalka admits he is proud of it, but believes gratitude is important because Hollis did help a lot. With that, they both hear footsteps and Seteth calling and they hurry to hide Hollis before it’s too late.

In the post timeskip, Rusalka finds Hollis hanging around outside of the ruins of Sephtis’ office and asks him what he’s up to. Hollis is evasive at first, but admits he’s trying to see if the office can be cleared using his wind magic so that they can start rebuilding it and Sephtis can use it again. Rusalka remarks how thoughtful that is of Hollis, and confesses he admires how caring Hollis is. It causes Hollis to get flustered and start explaining that he just considers the man a good friend and that Rusalka shouldn’t get the wrong idea about things. Rusalka shifts to his creepier voice and asks Hollis if he really thinks that he hasn’t known about what he and Sephtis did all those years ago all this time - which makes Hollis even more flustered about it. He begs Rusalka not to talk about it because it’s embarrassing especially considering Rusalka was young at the time and that Hollis had no idea how he even found out about it. Rusalka just laughs a little, but doesn’t explain how he found out. Instead, he promises to keep it a secret as he always has done, but asks if he can help out with clearing the office with Hollis. The change of subject makes Hollis much happier and they both get to work.

With Seteth

Seteth happens to be poking in Sephtis’ office, looking for information on him, when he accidentally startles Rusalka who happened to be putting a book back on his father’s bookshelf. Frightened, Rusalka bolts for the door to his and Sephtis’ private rooms but Seteth calls to him to stop. He freezes, and begins to explain himself in a panic, working himself up more and more as he promises he was just studying and not doing anything wrong. Seteth tries to calm him, and explains that he isn’t here to tell Rusalka off and that he has nothing to panic over. This makes Rusalka defensive, and he asks what else Seteth could possibly be in the office for when Sephtis isn’t around. It forces Seteth to admit that he was snooping, which makes Rusalka go quiet and frown at him whilst Seteth explains how he was looking for information on the Ubel family and any possible plans Sephtis might be working on. Rusalka’s voice goes cold, almost emotionless, and in a creepy tone he tells Seteth that there’s no such plans and that it’s very rude to snoop through other’s business - and asks him if he’d like him going through his Church papers in the same way. Seteth, sensing trouble, makes for a hasty exit.

After Flayn’s rescue, Seteth sees Rusalka out one evening surrounded by moths. Not wanting to surprise him too much, he tries to approach him carefully and announce his presence - but still makes Rusalka jump a little when he comes near. Rusalka makes his moths vanish, and Seteth apologises for catching him off guard like that. Rusalka apologises too, but is still guarded. He explains that he’s trying to get better around people, but that Seteth is still someone who frightens him somewhat. Seteth asks why, as he explains he cannot recall anything that he may have done to cause this fear or hurt him. Rusalka apologises and clarifies. It isn’t anything that Seteth has done, but rather what Seteth is that is what causes him to be frightened. Seteth becomes guarded, and asks if Rusalka means him being part of the Church of Seiros - and is startled when Rusalka vaguely answers with “that’s one thing that you are that is concerning.” Seteth tells him to speak no further on it, in case people are listening, and Rusalka is happy not to as it brings him back bad memories. He’s happy that Flayn is safe, and explains he heard Seteth apologise to Sephtis too - which he is grateful for. Seteth thanks him for his good words, and the two agree to mutually respect one another’s space and secrets.

A Support

In Amber Scales, Rusalka and Seteth have an additional support and meet in the post time skip. Seteth approaches Rusalka to ask to speak with him. Though a little nervous, Rusalka is noticeably less frightened of Seteth than he has been in prior encounters. Seteth doesn’t procrastinate and asks Rusalka directly if he has always known about the Children of the Goddess and what he and others truly are - to which Rusalka explains he has known since he was eight years old, when he met one of the Children of the Goddess in person. Seteth is taken aback, but does sputter out a thanks for not blowing his or Flayn’s cover at least. Rusalka shakes his head and says he never thought of it that way. Rather, he never wished to speak of it because the topic was always painful for him considering what Abaddon did to him. Rusalka admits he felt afraid of Seteth for a long time because of the association, but that he has come to change how he feels now that he knows Seteth and Flayn more as people. But, equally he feels strongly that he is unsurprised by Rhea’s revelation because of his past as well. Seteth is conflicted, but understands. He thanks Rusalka for coming round to himself and Flayn and for not judging them by things they cannot change - which makes Rusalka laugh. When Seteth asks what’s funny, Rusalka points out how that is a lesson Seteth has learnt as well - as he has come to realise that the Emerald Dragons themselves are more than just factors they cannot control as well. Realising, Seteth also laughs, and the two share a small moment of bonding together.

Rusalka, Plotting a Jailbreak

Plotting a Jailbreak is a paralogue in Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

Story

Curan approaches Rusalka one afternoon in a panic, which quickly makes Rusalka panic as well out of concern for his friend. The two take a moment to try and calm and Curan explains that he just received news from his mother that his father, who currently sits in prison in Gloucester territory, has been scheduled for execution. Rusalka is shocked, as he knows that Curan’s father is a good man as the two of them grew up visiting one another very often. He suggests that they need to do something about it, and Curan agrees because he doesn’t want his father to be executed for crimes he didn’t do.

The two keep talking frantically, with Rusalka suggesting that they go to his father Sephtis for help as he might know how to help get to the prison. It is at that point that Byleth appears and asks what’s wrong. Curan explains to Byleth how his father is currently in prison in Gloucester territory, as he is accused of making an attempt on the life of Lorenz’s father Count Gloucester. Curan asserts that his father is a good man and does not deserve execution, and that his home territory will likely suffer even more if their lord is killed. He wants to break his father out. Rusalka also speaks up, explaining that his family and the Menteth family have been close and he considers Curan’s father an Uncle to him - he wishes to help free him as well.

Curan reads the letter to Byleth, and suggests that they should head to the Leicester Alliance and meet with his teacher as they may be able to offer them assistance with this. Agreeing to go with Curan and Rusalka begins the paralogue.

Arriving in Menteth territory, Rusalka and Curan bring Byleth to Curan’s household, where they are met by a startling sight. Curan’s teacher, Astaroth, does not look human at all. Indeed, they are not. Astaroth is nervous, but they introduce themselves as Curan’s teacher at first - but they are also quick to sense that something is off about Byleth. They remark how their blood smells strange to them, and that they sense a crest that Byleth should not have. But, as they explain, there is no time to deliberate over it for the moment as they need to head to the prison. Rusalka agrees that they need to free Curan’s father first and then consider their professor.

The prison is guarded by a commanding prison warden, and Byleth, Rusalka and Curan plot to sneak their way to a side entrance to rescue Curan’s father, whilst Astaroth creates distraction outside to keep reinforcements busy. With this plan in place, the battle begins.

Following the rescue, Byleth reconvenes with Curan, Rusalka and Astaroth once more. Curan is delighted to have his father back and thanks Rusalka and Byleth for coming with him to help. He also thanks his teacher for their assistance as well - and immediately Astaroth begins to fuss over him because they have missed him whilst he’s been at Garreg Mach. Embarrassed at being fussed over in front of his friend and teacher, Curan tries to protest but it’s quickly cut off as Astaroth insists they check him over. They then send Curan to go see his father, asking to speak with Byleth alone. Rusalka, happy to have his uncle back as well, goes with Curan to see him and the two of them can be seen celebrating together.

Alone, Astaroth explains to Byleth that they can smell the Crest of Flames that they bear. Quiet and cautious, they tell Byleth that that is not a natural crest for a human to bear, and that they suspect something has been done to tamper with them in order to cause it. They ask Byleth if they consider themselves an ally of the Church of Seiros, and Byleth shakes their head and explains that they are looking out for their students and that alone. That pleases Astaroth. They ask Byleth to look after Curan, and that if anything happens to him then they will be the first to know and they will not be pleased. Byleth agrees and the two part ways.

Back at Garreg Mach, Curan and Rusalka thank Byleth for their help, assuring them that Viscount Menteth is back home safe and well. He’s going to be sending them a reward for their efforts as well. They promise to let Byleth know when it arrives and thank them once more before leaving.

Availability, Units, and Suggested Level

As a rescue mission, speed and movement across the map is of the highest priority. Though there is a long route that can be taken, bringing keys or a unit with lockpick can speed up the path to Viscount Menteth considerably as well. With Curan and Rusalka both healing and dark magic is covered, and Astaroth as an ally also brings a considerable amount of magic potential as well. As such, it is best to have a few units who can handle close combat in order to compliment their strengths and cover their weaknesses, as well as to shield them whilst they attack from long range. Those left by Astaroth will benefit from their healing ability, meaning they can mostly be left to cover the brunt of the attacks whilst speedier units move in for the rescue. Ashe, with his personal skill being lockpick, is definitely a good pick for this paralogue.
