If My Lord has said that he trusts you... Then I must try to trust you as well. But do not count on that being right away, should you do anything I suspect to be against his wishes. Well then I will not hesitate to defend him. But! It's not going to come to that right? Is it?

Nevar, Chapter 1: Three Houses

Nevar is a character in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. In the first four routes of the story, he is a member of the Black Eagles under Edelgard von Hresvelg. However, due to his behaviour he is also a member of the Emerald Dragons under Glade de Foxguard, with whom he allies for the Amber Scales route. Nevar is an orphan who was adopted into the De Foxguard family as a retainer to Glade, and has been by his side ever since. Due to his issues settling in the other houses at the Academy, and several severe altercations between himself and members of the Church, Nevar was on the verge of expulsion before being taken into the Emerald Dragons. He now remains a student, albeit a much disliked one, and is being carefully monitored for his well being. He wields magic as a primary weapon, with his greatest skill being in his dark magic.

In the Cindered Shadows story, it is revealed that Nevar has more secrets than he lets onto at first glance. Firstly, it is revealed that Nevar possesses a Minor Crest of Aubin, though he never thought it worth revealing to anyone aside from his lord and Sephtis. Some supports in game do hint that Nevar is aware he has a crest (Particularly those supports with Glade, Sephtis and Hotaru) but it is never outright stated until this story begins. It is then also revealed that Nevar's mother was also the mother of Yuri Leclerc, the leader of the Ashen Wolves. The two are, in fact, half brothers. This revelation is horrific to Nevar, who was abandoned by their mother to die because she could not feed two children on her low income, and it becomes a deep and bitter rivalry and resentment towards Yuri because of it.

Biography

Early Life

Much of Nevar's early life is extremely hazy, and he struggles to remember much from before he was adopted by his lord and raised by his family. Because of the heavy trauma and abuse that he suffered from a young and impressionable age, Nevar's mind has blocked a lot of his memories subconsciously in order to prevent him from going insane with fear and grief. He does, however, recall a fair bit more than he will initially let on to others - it is just that he prefers not to speak of those times before he was rescued as it upsets him. If asked, he will say that he grew up a street rat who took to thieving in order to survive, before he was taken in by his Lord and raised as his retainer. It was his Lord’s decision that the two of them go to The Officer’s Academy together.

It is later revealed in his supports that Nevar was born the second child of a prostitute who lived in an extremely poor town in western regions of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus. His father's identity is completely unknown to both Nevar and his mother. As the second born child, Nevar was an additional burden and mouth to feed for an already struggling parent. The stress of raising two young children in poor and shady conditions caused great stress to his mother, and she never truly bonded with her child. Though she did raise him and his elder half-brother through his infancy, she did not do much to care for his health or wellbeing - or show him any kind of affection or motherly love. At the same time, she also demonstrated clear favouritism towards her first child, thinking that the actions would not affect Nevar so early on in his life. In fact, it did affect the infant, and he harboured resentment to the half-brother he barely knew that would remain with him his whole life.

When Nevar turned four years old, his mother was no longer able to cope with two children. Nevar was clingy and demanded her attention - desperate for some kind of affection as she never gave him any. He would cry and attempt to get into her room whilst she was with clients, infuriating her as it interrupted her work. Fed up with the child she never wanted, Nevar's mother chose to abandon him, thinking that her sickly and clingy infant would quickly succumb to the elements, stray animals, or perhaps be raised by another prostitute. Since she'd never bonded with him, she cared not for what became of him. Nevar's mother hadn't even been the one to give him his name. This was actually chosen for him by someone else, but he didn't remember who. This abandonment, the first of many in Nevar's life, hit him the hardest, and the infant completely lost the ability to trust those around him. This would later develop into a deeply ingrained case of reactive attachment disorder. By sheer luck, the infant Nevar was taken in by other ladies of the night who at least nursed him and kept him from danger, even if they did not provide him with the same kind of love and care that a mother should. He never saw his mother again, but did not care about that.

Thanks to their efforts, Nevar survived infancy and was mostly given menial tasks around the brothel to occupy his time. It was hardly a childhood, but he was able to live. However, because of the abandonment and lack of care he was still extremely desperate for attention and a mother's love he'd never received. He quickly grew unhealthily attached to any signs of affection in those who came near him. In some ways it won Nevar favours such as treats and affection from prostitutes who treated him like their own child, but left him easily open to early exploitation from some of the more cruel and sickening pimps and clients. There were several attempts made by shifty patrons to involve him in brothel activities, not all of which were stopped in time by concerned others. Nevar was traumatised by the abuse, and had fled the brothel by age six. Terrified and uncertain of what to do or where to go, he fled across the border into the Adrestian Empire and hiding himself in Remire Village.

Living as a street urchin in Remire Village, Nevar resorted to petty theft in order to get food and money to live on. As he was only give, people would often take pity on him for being so young and desperate, and he would use his charms to attempt to get attention and sympathy as well as money. Any kind of affection would do, even if it never filled the hole he felt in his heart from being abandoned. The village was unwelcoming to another urchin, and the people were already poor. At night Nevar would sleep in the church, hiding in the corners where he wouldn't be found, and by day he would be on the street. He would target nobles in particular and relied on his fast running to keep from getting caught. If he stole something valuable, he would attempt to sell it to some of the more corrupted peddlers at the market, or visiting merchants, in exchange for food or money. Though he would never trust anyone he interacted with, Nevar still craved affection from wherever he could get it. People who were kind to him would be frequented more often for favours and trades, and those who showed him hostility he would avoid as much as he could.

One of Nevar's pickpocketing attempts, however, would go on to change his life forever. At the age of seven and a half, he spotted a boy of about his own age wandering home through the market unaccompanied. Given his dress, Nevar assumed the boy to be of noble birth, and therefore felt that he was a perfect target to rob - easy and very profitable. What he did not expect, however, was for this boy to be well trained at defending himself. When Nevar attempted to pickpocket him, he found himself suddenly caught and pinned into submission. Traumatised at the thought of being imprisoned or worse killed, Nevar immediately broke down, thrashing and sobbing to try and wriggle away from his captor. People abusing him throughout his life, added to his inability to form trusting relations, lead him to assume the worst of the situation and he begged and begged for mercy. He broke down and confessed he was desperate and hungry and that he was unarmed, assuming he was about to be killed.

In fact, Nevar had been extremely lucky in who he had chosen as his target. This was the young Lord Glade de Foxguard, who lived in Remire Village. Glade spared Nevar's life, and instead offered him some of his own food as a means of apology for the rough treatment. Though they parted soon after, it was not the only time that the two boys would see one another. After this, Glade would come to see Nevar more often, meeting him at the church. Though he couldn't give him a permanent home, Glade still brought him food, water, and medical supplies when needed, and the two would often spend their time talking and talking. They became cautious friends, mostly as Nevar was at first reluctant to open up to his newfound companion. It took him well over six months of careful conversation to begin to act less hostile towards Glade, because he could not grasp how to trust him or understand what it felt like to have someone not abuse him. However, as time went on the two began to bond. Thanks to the company and affection he received, Nevar grew extremely attached to Glade, and would take every word he said as gospel - much to Glade's advantage.

When Nevar was around 9 or so years old, he never quite knew exactly how old he was, the two of them were attacked by bandits who raided Remire Village. In the fight, Glade lost his eye, and Nevar was heavily injured to his stomach, leaving him with heavy permanent scarring. Traumatised, Nevar was found collapsed over his "Lord" - as he now referred to Glade by - attempting to protect him, even when help arrived to bring them to safety. The two boys were taken back to the de Foxguard household to recover, and both were thankfully able to make an almost full recovery. Glade begged for his father to take in Nevar as an adopted son, or even as a servant, just so that the two of them could remain together. He agreed, and Nevar was thenceforth raised by the de Foxguard family. Thenceforth, Nevar became an adopted son of Lord de Foxguard, and grew up alongside his friend Glade. They never formally considered themselves to be brothers of any kind, but were most certainly the best of friends. Nevar took up the position of his Lord's retainer, as his commoner status did not put him on the same level as Glade, but he was glad to serve him as best he could. Equally, Nevar thrived upon the affection he received in kindness from all the hard work he did, and it boosted his self-confidence. He was also given a formal education, and excelled greatly in magic and academic studies. His injury meant he struggled with physical combat, but he did pick up a few sword fighting skills. When Nevar reached his teens, he left to join the Officers Academy at the Monastery alongside Glade.

Academy Phase

White Clouds

Nevar should have excelled at the Academy, but things were set against him as the Church did not recognise his deep rooted developmental issues and trauma. As a result of his place of birth, Nevar was placed in the Blue Lions house, whereas his Lord who was born in the Empire was assigned to the Black Eagles. Unable to cope without Glade around, Nevar quickly began to act irrationally and display severely difficult behaviour. He could not settle in the dormitories, and refused to interact with other members of his house. To try and settle him, he was then transferred into the Black Eagles to be alongside Glade. This did appear to work but he still remains banned from the Church and borderlining expulsion.

Should Byleth choose to teach the Black Eagles then Nevar will be a part of their class for the Academy Phase. He is mostly on the fringes of the class, and there are frequent periods where he is missing, and the other students explain that he is in counselling and not attending regular lessons with them. If Byleth chooses another house, then Nevar will need to be recruited into the class. He will also still have "missing" periods, which will be explained as therapy and counselling sessions.

Through supports in the White Clouds campaign of the story, Nevar's troubled time as a member of the Blue Lions and now as a member of the Black Eagles is revealed to Byleth. He is frequently irritable and hostile to other members of his house, and plays truant from classes in order to be with his Lord. When scolded by professors or by members of the Church, he throws tantrums and suffers from severe panic attacks from being emotionally and physically overwhelmed by authority figures scolding him and the negative attention. In supports with Sephtis, Byleth learns that other staff and members of the Church of Seiros became increasingly concerned when Nevar began to refuse food and water. Unable to deal with him, they resorted to frequent isolation (which often ended in Nevar being admitted to the infirmary for panic attacks) and having him work in the Church in the hope that the Goddess might bring the boy solace. Nevar loathed the church, as it made him feel trapped, and he was barred from entering after Seteth caught him terrorising Flayn. Thankfully he has been somewhat more mellow since he was put into therapy with Professor Sephtis and transferred house.

Amber Scales

Warning! This content will contain spoilers for Fire Emblem: Three Houses. [ ]

Amber Scales reveals where Nevar has been during the periods that he is “missing” in White Clouds. He is part of the Emerald Dragons with a few other classmates who are also on the verge of expulsion for various reasons. In this class, Nevar is able to be alongside Glade, and has even made a few genuine friends amongst the others in this unofficial house. When Byleth chooses to become Sephtis’ teaching assistant, they are reunited with Nevar who appears to be a lot happier in this class than he was in other routes. He is also a lot calmer and less prone to meltdown, and it is revealed that like the others he is receiving individual and group therapy to help him get through school.

As he is much more confident in the Emerald Dragons, Nevar tends to speak to Byleth more. He will speak his mind on the missions, including agreeing with the others that Lord Lonato was framed and that there is much more going on at The Academy than others appear to be aware of that they want to find out. He does, however, still act hostile towards members of the Church - including hissing at Catherine when she talks down to him. Equally, Nevar is still shown to be wary of Flayn when she joins the Emerald Dragons after her kidnap. However, with the latter he slowly begins to warm to her as the rest of his class encourage and support him.

As the Emerald Dragons begin to uncover more of the conspiracies that are buried within Garreg Mach, Nevar’s suspicion of the church deepens. He’s shown to actively avoid anywhere where Rhea is likely to be, and he harbours a deep distrust of the other members of staff and those outside of the Emerald Dragons. Because of his similarities to those in the Church, Nevar is also initially very nervous around Taliesin, but thankfully he is soon put at ease.

Nevar is much more cooperative in Amber Scales than he has been in other routes, and is frequently seen contributing to conversation and idea planning alongside his housemates. He reiterates the message of the story, that he (like all the Emerald Dragon Students) is a person in his own right, and that he wishes to be acknowledged as such. Finding out the shocking amount of human experimentation that has been going on behind the scenes across Fódlan, including in Remire where he had lived himself, Nevar is understandably disturbed and it shakes his resolve. However, he looks to his fellow housemates for support and receives it, growing determined to seek the truth alongside them and to keep pushing forward and proving themselves.

By the time the final battle of the Academy Phase arrives, Nevar is fully resolved to see their hard work through to its conclusion, he joins Byleth in helping him and the rest of his class escape from Garreg Mach in the wake of Edelgard’s revolution. They narrowly escape, and Nevar even admits he felt scared most of the time, but eventually they reach the point of safety. Only for Byleth to fall and go missing, upsetting Nevar greatly.

Cindered Shadows

Nevar is one of the other recruits alongside Ashe, Linhardt, and Hilda to join with Edelgard, Dimitri, Claude, and Byleth in exploring the Abyss. He is noticeably nervous, but as he is with Glade Nevar does not panic nor cause trouble early on. Mostly, he simply listens to what the others have to say. Initially he, like the others, is in awe at what they find in the Abyss - but prepares to fight once they find themselves up against the Ashen Wolves.

Most interestingly, if Nevar is chosen to attack Yuri the two will exchange dialogue explaining that they recognise one another, but Nevar will not reveal where from right away. Nevar is considerably upset by the exchange and his attacks on Yuri will always land as a critical hit out of anger. Following the battle he has to be forcibly contained from attacking Yuri further by Glade. Nevar also almost uses another name for Yuri, but he uses a spell to stop Nevar talking before it can be revealed. No one really understands where Nevar's sudden outburst comes from, nor do neither he nor Yuri explain it. Nevar does, however, mockingly refer to Yuri as "Golden Child" and "Favoured Child" multiple times in his dialogue from then onwards - which arouses suspicion among Glade and the other members of the party that something deeper may be going on.

At Yuri's "Betrayal", Nevar spirals into a complete meltdown in front of the others - muttering incoherently and in doing so revealing multiple secrets he had kept hidden even from Glade. He talks of Yuri abandoning him "a second time" and that "it always has to go the way of the perfect child" before becoming nothing more than frightened screaming and crying. He, once again, almost outs another name for Yuri, but Glade unintentionally stops him from using it as he attempts to calm Nevar down. The others are visibly confused, but Glade does manage to calm his retainer down enough that they can pursue Yuri and the captured Ashen Wolves. Nevar is ready to confront Yuri, but is held back after Aelfric reveals his true motives for founding the Ashen Wolves and bringing them together. Though reluctant, Nevar assists in thwarting the ritual, and defeating Aelfric in his beast form.

After Aelfric is defeated, Nevar remains away from the Church soldiers cleaning up the mess - and especially away from Rhea. He is visibly angry seeing Yuri with Rhea as well, though he does not comment on their exchange. As the rest of the group make plans to leave the Abyss, Yuri approaches Nevar quietly and asks to speak with him alone. Nevar refuses, and tells him to say whatever he needs to say in front of his Lord as well. Yuri agrees, and tells Nevar that: "our mother is still alive, should you wish to return home," and in response Nevar attempts to cast a dark spell at him. Thankfully Glade intercepts this, and Yuri is fast enough to get out of the way. Nevar spits at him, furious, that he wishes their mother was dead, and that he knows she'd prefer that he were dead anyways so what is the point of him going to her. He adds that he loathes Yuri for being the perfect child who never had to "suffer to live and survive when everyone has abandoned you, like I had to" before finally running out of the Abyss himself.

War Phase

Crimson Flower

If Byleth chooses to support Edelgard, then Nevar will follow the rest of his house and join the Black Eagle Strike Force. He seems most happiest with this path as it allows him to remain with Glade. Nevar will support Edelgard's ordeals, though when asked he will state that his reason for remaining with her is solely to stay alongside his Lord and nothing more. Nevar actually seems rather disinterested in the political schism going on, after all he was banned from the church anyways, but nevertheless fights hard. When Rhea is defeated, he asks if this means he will no longer be banned from entering the Monastery at Garreg Mach, making Edelgard laugh. He is not close to his classmates, and doesn't have much to say or do with them and frequently does not participate in their plans as he does not feel wanted there. Instead, he simply stays alongside his Lord.

If Nevar is recruited into the Blue Lions or the Golden Deer, he will follow alongside them into the War Phase. He is mostly uncooperative and anti-social, and will stay by his Lord (who is a requirement to get him to change house) and not engage with others. Nevar is especially prickly around Dimitri and will act with hostility towards him when he rejoins with his former house. Because of his refusal to socialise with these students, he does not participate in much of the story. He remains banned from Church grounds and will keep well away from Rhea and anyone else from the Church of Seiros. With Claude he is less hostile, but still does not enjoy being in the house. Nevar shows little interest in the houses' journeys and will only state that he is here for his Lord and for no one else.

Silver Snow

If Byleth chooses to reject Edelgard and side with the Church of Seiros, then Nevar will join the Resistance Army. He is noticeably guarded in his interactions, and unsure of the right things to say. Much of this is due to knowing Rhea greatly dislikes him, and he does not wish to be near her in any way. At some points, he may even comment that he wishes he had joined with Edelgard instead - but his decisions for remaining with the Church are purely because his Lord has chosen to do so, not because of Byleth's decision. Nevar is incredibly uncooperative in the Resistance Army, and will not participate in any of the planning and only shows for battles. He is also still banned from Church grounds, and speaking to him will reveal that he feels incredibly excluded from the rest of the army and lonely.

Amber Scales

After five years, Nevar is found hiding in Abyss alongside the rest of the Emerald Dragons. Overjoyed at being reunited with his teacher, he is quick to hug Byleth and welcome them back to their House. He even confesses that he missed them. With newfound resolve, Nevar is happy to assist Byleth in continuing to seek the truth of what is going on in Fódlan. With the group taking back Garreg Mach, Nevar even jokes that he’s finally allowed to set foot in the Church. He is by far more cooperative in this route than he is in any other War Phase route, and will be present in most cutscenes and dialogues where he actively contributes to plans and discussions.

As more and more of the truth of Fódlan is revealed, Nevar becomes more determined that he and the Emerald Dragons need to bring Rhea down and bring this era to a close so that people can rebuild a better nation. If his paralogue was completed in the Academy Phase, he is also able to build supports with Yuri and their relationship is somewhat better than it initially was - but it will never be fully repaired in any way. If Byleth has chosen to S Support Nevar, then following the final battle he will confess his love at the Goddess Tower.

Personality

Nevar can be a difficult person to interact with, because of his extremely volatile and sporadic personality. He's extremely asocial, and is completely unable to form healthy, trusting bonds with other people around him. This can affect his friendships and supports as people avoid him out of fear that he may attack them. This is predominantly caused by his Disinhibited Reactive Attachment Disorder (DRAD) that prevents him from understanding bonds between himself and parental or caregiver figures in his life. Nevar has no trust, but also too much trust for the wrong people, and tends to become unhealthily attached to people who intend on manipulating him and using his strong magical abilities. It also causes Nevar to act very inappropriately around others as he is unable to comprehend social norms or read the room. His relationship to Glade is one such example, as Nevar finds himself physically unable to cope without his friend in close proximity. When Glade is gone for a prolonged period, intrusive thoughts begin to manifest bad separation anxiety in Nevar, to the point where he can develop panic attacks and faint from the overwhelming stress. This is resolved and best calmed when Glade returns to him. In the other extreme, Nevar cannot form healthy friendships with strangers as he tends to either become hostile from irrational fear of being hurt by them, or simply he finds himself incapable of connecting to them in any way, and he simply loses interest in the friendship. Those who show him affection cause him to become clingy and uncomfortably touchy, as he responds instinctively to the need for affection rather than because he feels anything towards the person themselves.

As a result of his condition, Nevar struggles to keep his emotions in check. Though he has Glade to mostly keep him under control, he can relapse into bad fits of jealousy and violent outbursts when he feels he or his Lord are threatened. However, he does try to make an effort to be "normal" to the best of his ability, as he knows others judge him heavily. On the first meeting Nevar comes across as a polite and generally pleasant individual. When around his Lord, which is more often than not, he appears charming and somewhat normal. Though many would say it is impossible to shake the feeling that there is something about him that does not seem quite right. Nevar finds himself best able to open up around other members of his house, as he has spent the most time with them. Nevar has a sharp sense of humour and can be brutally sarcastic in the right moments, but will always retreat behind his Lord if he fears a negative reaction to the things that he says. His attachment to Glade is blindingly obvious, and certainly he appears to be happiest when around him. Nevar also reacts well to praise, and will instantly be drawn towards those who give him attention and/or affection for his actions. The attention he receives does not always have to be positive, but he is most receptive when complimented or shown physical affection from his Lord. In cases where he senses a person will give him great praise, Nevar will become extremely clingy. However, touch from others can be touch and go, and if it comes from someone whom he does not feel safe around he can react quite suddenly and defensively to even accidental contact. It is here where the cracks in Nevar's otherwise "normal" disposition begin to appear.

In battle, Nevar's personality undergoes a drastic change. He can become fiercely protective of those he cares about, but also extremely cruel to anyone he considers to have "abandoned" him or betrayed him. When fighting, he displays a frighteningly cruel and sadistic side to himself, and he is a ridiculously powerful dark make. To the point where he can at times leak uncontrolled dark magic around him when stressed or anxious. It has sometimes been interpreted as picking fights, which is why Nevar's position as a student at Garreg Mach remains very tenuous.

Nevar - Loyal Retainer

After the war, Nevar returned back to the De Foxguard household in order to continue serving his Lord Glade. He still remained fiercely loyal to his duties, and was rarely seen far from Glade or the De Foxguard family. Though at times he could get a little jealous, he wholeheartedly supported Glade's growing family and would do his best to provide for them where he could. He hoped that no one in the de Foxguard family would ever suffer in the same way he did. His actions in protecting his Lord, including foiling multiple assassination attempts, were recorded in history as incredible acts of both bravery and loyalty.

Nevar and Byleth (Crimson Flower)

With the end of the war, Byleth announced his marriage to Nevar. It caused quite a stir amongst the others, who did not think that Nevar had ever expressed desire to marry or settle with someone other than his Lord. However, it quickly became apparent that the two had developed a strong bond fighting alongside one another. Though it was a struggle for Nevar, as he did not have the ability to trust, he always did the best he could to prove his loyalty to Byleth in any way he could. With the war against the church over, he took it upon himself to assist with the destruction of Those Who Slither in the Dark. He and Byleth were said to be very happy together, and would never be seen apart even whilst working.

Nevar and Byleth (Verdant Wind / Silver Snow)

After ascending to the throne as the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan, Byleth announced his marriage to Nevar. It caused quite a stir, as people had not expected the two to bond due to Nevar's condition. However, it quickly became apparent that they had an inseparable bond. Thanks to Byleth, Nevar began to settle and repair relationships with others, though he still kept his first priorities as his Lord and his husband. Often he would dedicate himself to working on anything that would assist those he cared for, but at times Nevar could also be found sneaking honey from the kitchens to share with them in their time off.

Nevar and Byleth (Azure Moon)

After taking on the role of archbishop of the Church of Seiros, Byleth announced his marriage to Nevar. It came as a shock, as Nevar was banned from the Church of Seiros previously, but the move allowed Nevar to be welcomed back into the church and accepted by its members. This was reassuring to him, and he dedicated himself to supporting his husband and his lord in every way that he could. Though he still remained quite distrustful of officials, he would never be seen away from his husband's side in any discussions.

Nevar and Byleth (Amber Scales)

After rising to the role of the first leader of the United Nation of Fódlan, Byleth announced his marriage to Nevar. It caused a stir, mostly among the rest of the students who hadn't known that Nevar ever left his Lord long enough to court someone. It was, however, widely accepted and celebrated by all and the two were wed in a simple but very loving ceremony. As the task of establishing a new Fódlan loomed over them, Nevar promised to do what he could to support his husband in rebuilding the country. It was written that they had a very passionate relationship, and both Byleth and Nevar were quite private about most of their intimate affairs, but it was clear to the people of Fódlan that they were a united and loving couple who wanted the best for their people.

Nevar and Feleath

After the war, Nevar vanished for quite sometime and it was thought that he may have died and his body gone unrecorded. Efforts were made to search for him, until a letter arrived at the De Foxguard household explaining that he was alive and well. To everyone's surprise, Nevar had chosen to leave his adoptive family, although he promised to visit often for his Lord, and was being mentored under the watchful eye of Feleath. Feleath had always been like a mother figure to Nevar, and his adoptive family were happy to see that Nevar had found happiness in joining her in travelling across Fódlan. He lived a long life, though she of course outlived him, and the two were always close.

Nevar and Hotaru (Amber Scales)

After the war, Nevar and Hotaru decided they would continue the excellent teamwork that they had developed whilst fighting together. They took to travelling the new United Nation of Fódlan, taking care of bandit groups, petty criminals and the remnants of the old era. Over time, stories soon spread of a deadly duo of dark magic and fistfighting who protected the innocents from harm. Criminals would flee at even the mere rumour of them approaching. Nevar and Hotaru were never romantic with each other, but remained the best of friends and a frightening force against their enemies.

Nevar and Curan (Amber Scales)

After the war, Nevar and Curan both turned their attentions towards helping rebuild the new United Nation of Fódlan together. After fighting so long side by side they had grown close, and remained the best of friends even in peace time. With their powerful magic, they quickly gained a reputation for taking down petty criminals and thieves, as well as healing those who were hurt or ill. Stories soon spread, and they were always welcomed with open arms wherever they travelled to.

Nevar and Yuri (Amber Scales)

Following the end of the war, Yuri made many attempts to rebuild the broken relationship with his half brother, even if only for the sake of the two of them never coming to blows over the matter. Nevar, still bitterly hurt by childhood abandonment and long built resentment of his elder half brother, remained unforgiving for many years and tensions between the two were widely known. Eventually, after almost giving up hope completely, Yuri returned a last time to Nevar to inform him that their mother had passed away without ever knowing of Nevar's survival. This actually became a turning point in their relations, and for the first time Nevar somewhat lessened his hostility towards Yuri. Though they never truly bonded, they at least agreed to not continue their fighting.

Death Prior to Timeskip

After becoming injured on the battlefield, Nevar retreated to his Lord and was sent back to the de Foxguard household in order to recover. Sadly, he passed away from his injuries shortly after. It was said that his last words were an apology to Glade for failing to be there to protect him anymore. Thus, Nevar did not make it to the promised reunion five years later.

Etymology

"Nevar" is simply derived from the word "Raven" backwards. Raven derives from most germanic languages and refers to the bird of the same name. It's presence usually bears ill omen, but in some myths the opposite can be true. "Branwell" is a traditional English name meaning "well where the gorse grows" and is most well known for being the name of Branwell Bronte, sibling of the three Bronte sisters.

Trivia

  • Nevar was never named by his mother, instead he was given the name by someone else in his infancy.
  • His surname he took from one of the Prostitutes who showed him kindness as a child, but he has not seen her since he left.
  • Nevar suffers from bad separation anxiety when kept away too long from his lord.
  • He has a particularly strong sweet tooth and his favourite food is honey.
  • Honey is also a very good way to bribe Nevar into cooperating with you.
  • Though he is fearful of people, Nevar does like animals and often pets all the cats lazing around the church and the Academy.
  • He does, however, confess in his Tea Time conversations that he is horribly allergic to both dogs and cats, and sneezes around them. Doesn't stop him from petting them however.
  • He makes Flayn cry. He is not sorry about that. Seteth loathes him as a result.
  • Thankfully, he can repair his relations with Flayn during Amber Scales, this does mean that Seteth learns to somewhat tolerate him.
  • Nevar is still very skilled at pickpocketing. If there is something that he wants from someone, but he doesn't want to talk to them, he'll simply steal it from them instead.
  • Nevar struggles to communicate well, and acts and speaks like a much younger child than he actually is.
  • At time he will go non-verbal if he is upset or angry.
  • He also hates the dark.
  • Though he is 17 in the pre-timeskip, Nevar's mental age is closer to 12 or 13 years old because of developmental issues.
  • Candles and incense burners calm him immensely.
  • When he begins to panic, Nevar can get extremely unpredictable and violent, and will lash out at anyone who attempts to touch or help him.
  • The safest way to calm Nevar down is to find someone that he trusts and bring them to him. Usually this is Glade, but it can also be Feleath or Hotaru.
  • Sephtis has also been using his enchanted moths to calm Nevar, they use a small amount of mind control to keep him placated. Nevar has no idea this is happening to him.
  • He is the only student to share a room with someone as he refused his own room. He stays with Glade.
  • He is one of the hardest units to recruit and to support with because of his trouble bonding. He requires the highest conditions of all other units. This includes another unit to be recruited into the player's house before he will even consider joining.
  • Nevar is the only male unit who will only S Support with Male Byleth and not female. He can however, obtain a platonic A rank with Female Byleth.
  • Nevar is also the only unit who will not support with any members of his former house, the Blue Lions, because of his hostility towards them.
  • Nevar's favourite colour is green.
  • Because of his attachment issues, Nevar struggles to discern things he likes that aren't just the same things that Glade likes. He struggles to think independently and is easily manipulated to Glade's emotions and ideas.
  • Nevar often tends to space out and daydream, voicing his odd thoughts out loud.
  • He hopes to one day get revenge on his mother and the brothel for his treatment in infancy. Because of this he bears great resentment towards Yuri Leclerc.
  • Ultimately, he never gets this chance for revenge as his mother passes away from natural causes.
  • It is heavily implied that Nevar was groomed and sexually abused as a child, which has heavily contributed to his behaviour issues and boundary problems.
  • Nevar is calmer and better in environments where he feels he is understood and not simply judged by assumptions.
  • His hair is naturally gradiented, and in the summer will look closer to just lilac rather than silvery and lilac thanks to the light.
  • Nevar has bad immunity and often suffers from colds, especially in the wintertime. He has been known to get bad sniffles.
  • He has mastered the art of crocodile tears in order to get his way. Not all of his crying is completely sincere.
  • Nevar has a small green dragon toy that was made for him by the De Foxguard family, it is a comfort object for him.
  • Sephtis and Feleath are the only two adult figures that Nevar actually fully trusts. Everyone else is always regarded with some degree of suspicion.
  • He drinks his tea with honey a lot, because he loves it really sweet.
  • In Amber Scales, Nevar will always be present in cutscenes, whereas he is usually missing in other routes even if he is officially a part of that route's house.
  • Most of the time, unless he absolutely loathes a person or loves a person, Nevar will just be incredibly neutral and disinterested in other people. He is not actively looking for friends.
  • He has been known to deliberately scare Rusalka from time to time, just to get a rise out of the boy. It does get him scolded by Sephtis.
  • Nevar is much more nocturnal, and usually sleeps in late because he was up all night.

Recruitment

If Byleth chooses to teach the Black Eagles or the Emerald Dragons in Chapter 1 then Nevar will be automatically recruited to their team from the start. However, if Byleth chose to teach in another house, then Nevar will not immediately agree to transfer classes straight away. Instead, Nevar first requires Byleth to have recruited his Lord, Glade, into their house first before he will even begin to consider changing house. He then requires proficiency in Reason and and a high MAG stat before accepting the request to transfer. The threshold required is decreased if Byleth has supports with them and by having supports with Glade.

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Nevar is undoubtedly a strong magic unit, and for the Emerald Dragons he is one of their hardest hitters. He has a decent pool of white magic that can make him a useful healer in the early stages, but he will quickly be outpaced by the Dragons’ actual healer Curan. Much like Linhardt, Nevar is built for the mixed magic type build. But unlike Linhardt, Nevar has access to the Dark Magic line and will pick up a considerable amount of highly powerful and hard hitting dark spells to boost his strength on the battlefield. His good growth in speed also means he will be hitting first the majority of the time as well. From a distance, he is a good attack unit, but can be a bit of a glass cannon if his defense does not build up suitably and he may not last many direct hits from an enemy. The real risk in letting Nevar get too many hits from the enemy is in the activation of his special ability, as it can play against Byleth if Nevar begins to attack friendly units.

From this, it makes the most sense to keep Nevar within the magic using classes. His wealth of dark magic suits him perfectly for Warlock, Bishop and Dark Bishop. Holy Knight is also acceptable, making use of his Faith pool, but it would come at the waste of his many Reason Magic skills. Nevar has minor skills in sword based attacks, but his stats will never fully keep up enough to make him viable in any primarily sword based classes such as fighter or myrmidon. He is better kept within the mage and monk lines of classes and taking full advantage of his magic potential. Upping Nevar's sword skills can prove useful as it allows for him to make use of his crest, which activates with weapon useless and is otherwise hardly used with Nevar's magic. Thus some of the Abyss specialty classes, such as Trickster which allows for both sword use and some degree of magic, can also be suited for him. However it will not get the best usage out of Nevar and may severely limit him.

Type Personal
Effect Critical hit boost when unit or companion unit's health falls below 50%. Can either attack enemies or cause friendly fire.
User Nevar

Beserker is a skill introduced in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It is the personal ability of Nevar Branwell.

Overview

A risky skill that can either significantly aid or hinder Byleth depending upon how it is activated. With both Glade and Nevar on the battlefield, Nevar gains a considerable stat boost to Mag and Atk, and if Glade is hit during the Enemy's Turn Nevar will be boosted in his stats in order to counter. However, letting Glade get hit too many times in order to boost Nevar comes at a considerable risk and reward. If Glade's health falls below 1/4 during the Enemy's turn, Nevar will be enraged and his critical hit rate will be greatly increased against enemy units. However, if the same should happen during the players turn, or worse if Glade is killed, then Nevar will blame Byleth. This causes him to revert to an enemy, and from the next enemy phase onwards he will begin attacking formerly friendly units with his increased skills.

Etymology

The idea of the Beserker comes from Old Norse corpus, wherein they were those who were said to have fought in a trance-like fury, a characteristic which later gave rise to the modern English word berserk (meaning "furiously violent or out of control"). The Old Norse form of the word was berserkr (plural berserkir). It likely means "bear-shirt" from the armour worn by these fighters. It was also thought that beserkers drew their powers from bear spirits. In battle, the berserkers were subject to fits of frenzy. They would howl like wild beasts, foam at the mouth, and gnaw the iron rim of their shields. According to belief, during these fits they were immune to steel and fire, and made great havoc in the ranks of the enemy. When the fever abated they were weak and tame.

Trivia

  • This is the only personal skill that can have a negative affect upon Byleth. Risk and reward must be taken into account when using Nevar on the battlefield.
  • Nevar's attacks on friendly units is fairly random, and he is not killed if he is defeated by a counterattack.
  • Nevar's skill will always activate with corresponding dialogue to tell the player which way he will now be advancing.

Etymology

Dromi was the name given to the second set of chains meant to bind Fenrir, or the Fenris Wolf in Norse Mythology. During the binding, Tyr used his hand to keep the wolf from biting any of the workers, and ultimately had it bitten off, which could be why the Relic is a glove as opposed to a standard ring.

Trivia

  • Nevar is able to use this relic, even though it is not specifically his, because he shares the same crest as Yuri.
  • Nevar is not selectable or playable in the paralogue that retrieves this Lost Relic, despite the fact that he is able to use it.

The Crest of Aubin is a game mechanic introduced in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It is a lost Crest that has only been found in two people: Nevar Branwell and Yuri Leclerc.

Overview

Believed to be blessings bestowed by the Goddess, Crests grant special powers to those who hold them such as high aptitude for magic, enhanced strength, and other boons that give them an edge over others. Crests are inherited by blood and thus recipients of Crests come from an ancestor who likewise had the same Crest. However, this is not the only means of transmission of crests. Because they come from the blood of the Nabateans, they can also be passed through experiment and through blood transfusion. This is the case for the Crest of Aubin, which both Yuri Leclerc and Nevar Branwell bear. Nevar received a blood transfusion from an unknown doctor when he was young, saving his life when he was near fatally injured by a horrific attack at the brothel. The motive of this attack was suspected to be sexual, but no proof has ever come to light and Nevar has little to no memory of the affair due to extreme trauma. Nevar does recall seeing the man who healed him, but he never heard his name or saw him again after the incident. What did happen in the years after, however was that Nevar manifested the Crest of Aubin. It is thought that this was the same man who coincidentally also saved Yuri from near death and granted him the crest as well.

Crest Origin

Aubin was one of the Four Apostles whom Rhea involved in the Rite of Rising to try and resurrect her mother. After the Rite of Rising failed to revive the Goddess, he left Garreg Mach and eventually settled in an unknown town, presumably Abyss. It is not known where Aubin came from or how he received his crest, though it is likely that Rhea was involved in granting it to him.

It's strongly implied that Aubin was still alive until less than two decades before the plot began. Yuri Leclerc says that when he still lived with his mother in western Faerghus, they once took in an old but very wise and kind traveler. He first taught the young Yuri how to read and write, later saved Yuri's life during a fatal plague, and passed away nearly immediately afterwards due to natural causes.

Etymology

Aubin is a masculine French given name variant of Albin, from the Roman cognate Albinus, derived from the Latin albus, meaning "white" or "bright".

Trivia

  • Because The Crest of Aubin is connected to weapon usage, it can be useless to Nevar because of his strengths in magic over physical weaponry.
  • Nevar only reveals to others that he has a crest in Cindered Shadows, it does not appear in his profile until after the player has played the DLC.
  • That being said, it can still be activated if Nevar uses weapons before his crest is revealed to the player, hinting that there is more to him than he lets on.

In White Clouds: Byleth happens upon Nevar as they are coming along the corridor, seeing him heading in the opposite direction. When Nevar sees Byleth he immediately tries to hide, which leads Byleth to ask if Nevar is alright. He is on guard, but admits he was planning to skip the class today because he didn't feel comfortable. Byleth is concerned, and asked where he planned to go since all of his classmates including his Lord would be in their classes. Nevar is defensive, and says it doesn't matter where he goes so long as he can have some time alone. Byleth remarks that Nevar has missed a lot of classes as of late, and that that could affect Nevar's grades. Nevar simply shrugs. Then Byleth tries to say that Nevar would miss out on time with his classmates if he did not attend - which actually gets Nevar to react. He hisses, shaking his head and saying that it is the other students' fault that he feels unwelcome in the class and wants to skip. Byleth is concerned by that and asks why. This is where Nevar fully confesses that his classmates hate him and don't want him around anyways, and that he feels unwanted in the class and would rather be anywhere else. Before Byleth can ask anything else, Nevar decides to leave, ignoring any more questions and leaving Byleth to wonder where Nevar is going and what has made his classmates hate him this much.

In Amber Scales: Byleth happens upon Nevar in the corridor, heading in the opposite direction to them. When Nevar sees Byleth he tenses up, but does not try to hide. He greets Byleth and explains that he won't be coming to class today, but seems to be sad about it. Byleth asks for an explanation, and Nevar admits he feels overwhelmed because of being in his main house in the morning and that he doesn't want to be around people for a bit. He adds that he's already spoken to Sephtis about this, and is going to take some time to be alone. Byleth agrees, and advises him of a place in the garden that is quiet and secluded that he might find helpful and calming. Nevar is genuinely grateful for that and thanks Byleth, saying that he is sorry for getting angry at times during classes because he gets overwhelmed. He admits he is still adjusting to having a class of students who actually like him and want him there, and returning to the main house who dislike him can be incredibly jarring and hard to deal with. Byleth explains that they understand, and that he can come back to the Emerald Dragons when he feels ready to. Nevar is very grateful for that and leaves with a wave.

In White Clouds, Post Chapter Six: Nevar is found hiding behind a pillar outside of Garreg Mach, listening to the church choir singing inside. He seems relaxed by the music, but is startled as Byleth approaches him and asks him what he's doing. Immediately defensive, he tries to hide further behind the pillar, only to get a bit stuck because the gap is too small even for him. Byleth offers to help him get out but Nevar refuses, hissing and starting to genuinely panic - a fact that Byleth remarks on to themselves. Seeing Nevar panic, they kneel down to try and talk and calm him, getting him to breathe and listen to the music in order to steady himself and ground himself. The technique works, and Nevar hesitantly takes Byleth's hand and is pulled free from behind the pillar. He thanks them, and apologises for panicking. Nevar explains that he fears being trapped because of childhood trauma, and that the adults who often offered to "help" him had always done so with bad intentions. Nevar admits he doesn't think that Byleth has bad intentions, but the fear is very deep rooted and can't just be shaken off easily. He also asks Byleth not to tell anyone that he's here because he shouldn't be around the church anyways. Indeed, just on cue there's the sound of Seteth approaching, and Nevar flees the scene. Seteth appears and asks Byleth to make sure Nevar does not come near the church. He's banned because he terrorised Flayn, and given her recent kidnapping they are being more vigilant on that rule to protect her. Byleth nods, but is left with questions.

In Amber Scales, after Chapter Six: Whilst going to choir practice at the Monastery, Byleth happens upon Nevar outside of the Church, listening to the choir singing inside. However, as they get closer they can also see that he appears to be squirming and struggling. Once near, Nevar sees Byleth and panics, trying to squirm more but it is now very clear that he is stuck in the gap behind the pillar that he was using to hide. The more stuck he gets and the more his attempts to free himself don't work, the more Nevar starts to panic - Byleth quickly hurrying over to offer help. Nevar is cautious at first because he still is yet to fully and completely trust Byleth, but he does reach his hands out to them and they both attempt to pull him free. It doesn't quite work, and Nevar starts to get really worried that Seteth or someone worse will find him here and that he will be in trouble for it. It even makes him start to cry, and Nevar confesses to Byleth about how he is banned from being on the Church's ground because of how he was accused of tormenting Flayn. Byleth promises that if anyone else tries to tell him off, they will explain what happened to them and try and prevent trouble. Nevar looks genuinely shocked by that, but nods, and with an extra hard tug they manage to get him free. Nevar hugs Byleth and thanks them for their help - especially for promising to protect him. He's starting to get attached and he promises that he will protect Byleth too.

In Verdant Wind/Silver Snow/Crimson Flower and Azure Moon: Byleth happens upon older Nevar at Garreg Mach, sitting in the gardens in the evening watching the stars. At first, Byleth hesitates to get closer and simply watches from a distance. Nevar is transfixed by the light of the stars, and when he sees a shooting star fly across above him he stops and closes his eyes, seeming to be wishing. When he's done, Byleth approaches and asks Nevar if they made a wish. Nevar jumps, but it is not as twitchy as it was before, he seems to be slightly more comfortable around Byleth for the moment. He nods and explains he was making a wish but that he doesn't want to tell what it is, since he hopes that it will come true. Byleth asks if they can guess, and they will be given the option to suggest what Nevar might have wished for. If Byleth chooses "For more honey?" - Nevar will laugh but shake his head and say he can get as much of that as he wants from the hives. If Byleth chooses "To be allowed into the Church" - Nevar will actually get angry. He dismisses that option as an impossibility and he doesn't care enough about the Church or the people in it to be that desperate to wish for them to include him. Finally, if Byleth chooses "To be by your Lord's side?" then Nevar's relations will increase and he will just smile and shrug, replying with "you'll never know, but I hope that it comes true." He then points to the sky, as more shooting stars start to fly overhead, and suggests Byleth make a wish too. Byleth does so, and Nevar asks them what they wished for. Byleth simply shakes their head and reminds Nevar that he didn't tell either. That makes him laugh, and he asks that Byleth stay and watch the stars with him a bit longer.

In Amber Scales part two: Byleth comes out to the Monastery gardens to see the sky lit with stars, with shooting stars sometimes streaking across the darkness. Nearby, Nevar appears to be wishing on them, hands clasped and eyes closed each time a shooting star goes over. Byleth approaches, and when Nevar sees them he is immediately happy. He takes Byleth's hand and guides them closer for the best view, pointing out the shooting stars and asking them to wish with him. Byleth asks what he wished for, and Nevar just laughs and asks Byleth if they know that telling someone your wish means it might not come true. He wants all his wishes to come true, so he won't be telling them. That being said, he does teasingly let Byleth guess, and laughs at the suggestions of honey and more time with Glade. After a few moments, Nevar actually admits he was wishing for the safety and happiness of someone else entirely. He confesses he's never been interested in others aside himself and his Lord before, but that since joining this house he has come to make new friends and new bonds that he genuinely cares for - and that now he has people who he can trust without fear of being abandoned again. In particular, he admits, there is someone who has become particularly special to him since they joined their house. Byleth asks who, and Nevar takes their hands, smiling. A shooting star passes over his head, and he gently says "I wish to protect you, professor, you're one of my special people now."

At the Goddess Tower after the events of Amber Scales, Nevar asks to speak with male Byleth alone. There, he is very nervous, but confesses that he has had something on his mind he needs to talk about before it overwhelms him. Byleth encourages this, and commends Nevar for understanding his emotions and wanting to find safe and healthy ways to express them. Nevar corrects him, saying that it isn't anger that he is struggling with here but rather something else. Nevar takes a breath and begins to speak about how much Byleth has done for him over their time together. Nevar explains how he feels a lot more understanding of his feelings and trauma. Though he cannot say they are gone, or if they will ever go, he does admit that he feels he can somewhat control his outbursts more now than he could when he was younger. He feels like he is not alone in the world anymore, and that there are people he can trust and be around who are not only safe but who want to protect him. In return, he has learnt to protect those he cares about as well. This is where he admits that the person he wants to protect more than anyone else is Byleth, because they have become a very very special person to him over the time that they have spent together. Nevar admits he doesn't know what the future will bring, and that he's scared of what could come, but that if Byleth is with him then everything is a little bit less overwhelming and frightening. He feels he can face what is coming if he has Byleth by his side. Byleth agrees, which makes Nevar incredibly happy. He confesses he doesn't have much of a ring he can give to him, because he could only get what he could afford, but Nevar hopes that Byleth will accept it as proof of his love for him. Byleth does, and the two spend the rest of their time at the Goddess Tower together.

After a particularly difficult battle during the Academy phase, Nevar awakens to a healing spell being used by Curan. At first he's a little disorientated and scared, but Curan quickly reassures him that he's in good and safe hands and that he's going to be okay. Nevar doesn't appear convinced however, as he can see that Curan looks to be in pain whilst healing him. He asks why Curan doesn't heal himself first, and Curan explains that in order to use his healing magic he has to hurt someone else to draw that power from a source. Since he doesn't want to hurt any of his other classmates, but Nevar needs to be healed still, he chose to draw that power source from himself. It means that it hurts a lot, but he doesn't mind because it means he can protect and save his friend. Nevar is genuinely touched by this, and admits he isn't used to having people outside of his Lord care for him like this. He thanks Curan and gives him a genuine smile, but is still left with many questions. Nevar says that he thinks Curan is a very good person and a good healer, and that healers are always good people so that must be why. Curan denies this and says there's a lot about him that lead others to believe he isn't a good person, and that anyone can learn to heal, it doesn't necessarily make them good - its just that healing magic tends to be preferred by good people. Nevar understands this, but before he can question further he feels another bout of pain from his injury, and Curan insists he lie down and rest so that he can finish the job. Nevar quickly falls back asleep again and Curan resumes his work, smiling to himself that he's doing something that can help another person - just like his father would want him to do.

All healed and better, Nevar comes to find Curan to thank him for healing him before, but also to ask more of the questions that have been on his mind. Curan is glad to see that Nevar is doing better, and laughs when Nevar immediately jumps into the questioning. Nevar wants to know why Curan is in the Emerald Dragons, because it doesn't seem like he is actually a bad person who has done bad things, unlike himself for example. He means it in a nice way, and stresses that its not that he doesn't want Curan to be in their house, but rather he wants to know what would lead to Curan being almost expelled if he doesn't appear to have done anything wrong. Curan quickly corrects him that he has done something wrong - he made an attempt on Lorenz's life and that's what almost got him expelled. Nevar is shocked, but asks more because he's now very curious. Curan confesses that he did so because it is thanks to Lorenz's father that his own father sits in a prison cell rather than at home looking after their region's people. He wanted to avenge his father and to get back at Lorenz for being so obnoxious and rude to him about the situation. Curan argues that Lorenz deserved it, and that is why the rest of the Golden Deer don't like him and he was almost expelled.

Nevar is highly impressed, but asks if Curan's father actually did do anything wrong to deserve to go to prison. Curan explains that, in his view, his father was doing the right thing by trying to prevent house Gloucester from taking control of the Alliance, as they are a noble house that only cares about themselves and their friends rather than the wellbeing of the people who work for them and live in their territory. He, like his father, strongly believes that a Lord should be their for the people and that they come before anything else - such is the duty of a noble. Nevar agrees, given that he is one of those "people" that Curan means in a way. He likens it to how his Lord cares for him, but on a much bigger scale. He thanks Curan for helping him understand.

A Support

In the post time skip, Nevar comes up to Curan asking to talk with him. With all that has happened, he has been thinking about what Curan said about his father and about how a lord should look after the people in their region in order to be a good Lord. He asks Curan if that is what he aspires to be when the fighting is over. Curan is quick to confirm this, and explains that he wants to free his father from prison and restore the family household back in the Leicester Alliance, because without their Lord there the people have been unhappy. He hopes to become as good a leader as his father is one day, and that even if the Church and the rest of the nobility don't agree with their ideals, he will stand by them. Nevar simply laughs, and states that Curan really is a very good person at heart and that he admires him for that. Nevar promises to support him and his goals, even if he is neither a noble nor a part of the people in Curan's home region. Curan shakes his head, and affirms that being good to all people doesn't just apply to the people he will one day govern over, but to all people he meets - which includes Nevar. He reminds him that they're friends, and that's why he healed Nevar in the first place all those years ago. Nevar admits he's happy to have a friend as good as Curan. He explains that he has found it hard to be good to people - because people have very rarely been good to him in his life. It has left him bitter and unforgiving towards others - especially nobles who were some of the worst to him. However, he admits, he has learnt that he cannot tar everyone with the same brush, and that sometimes he should still try to be the good person when others won't be, so that others don't suffer like he did. Curan pats his head and tells him he understands now, and suggests they go take a walk together. Nevar agrees and they both head off together, talking and laughing.

Whilst out for a walk, Nevar hears the sound of someone straining and goes to investigate the odd noises. In one of the gardens he happens to find Hotaru who is doing some weight training with large and heavy looking rocks that she's found. Lifting and carrying them around in order to test and build her strength. Nevar is immediately impressed, and he comes to sit and watch her training with great interest. He remarks how he wishes that he were strong enough to lift rocks like she can, but that he's far too weak and wouldn't even be able to pick up the smallest one that Hotaru has with her. To demonstrate, he tries and Hotaru has to stop him before he hurts himself. Nevar is left very disheartened, as he thinks that if he's not strong like she is he won't be of any use to the battle. Hotaru tells him she thinks he's strong in other ways, but he's clearly upset over the situation and pouts. Nevar worries that if he doesn't match up to her strength, then he will be abandoned because he won't be of any use to anyone. He even confesses to Hotaru that the reason his mother abandoned him was because he was such a frail child she didn't think he would live very long. Given that she was also abandoned as a child, that confession makes Hotaru angry as she hates that anyone would do such a thing to Nevar. However, before she can say more on it she notices he is trying to lift the rock again, and almost hurts himself doing it. She stops him and thankfully he isn't too badly hurt. They both decide they should take a break.

Nevar comes to Hotaru whilst she is training again, but he seems to be in a much better and more excited mood than he was before. He proudly declares that he has been doing some training of his own and can now lift some rocks. It's not much, but he does demonstrate that he can lift one of the smaller rocks. Hotaru is very proud of him for it, and encourages him to keep working on it. Nevar admits he's annoyed that he can't get stronger faster, because he wants to be as strong as Hotaru is. Hotaru explains that getting as strong of her could take years of training, and that he shouldn't beat himself up over not being there just yet. He's got lots of time. Nevar understands, but admits he still feels weak. Hotaru thinks it over, and then reminds him that he is strong in other ways, that arent physical strengths. For example, she explains, Nevar is very good at dark magic and she can't do any kind of magic at all. That makes him strong but in a different way to her. Nevar thinks it over, and he agrees that that does make him strong. He asks Hotaru if she's ever tried doing magic and she admits it's too much reading and study for her - she'd sooner just throw punches. But that that is what makes them work well together as they have different strengths that cover each other's weaknesses. Nevar is very excited by that and thanks her, promising to come back even stronger.

Deciding to do training together, Nevar is working on his magic whilst Hotaru is deadlifting heavy rocks together, the two enjoying each other's company and the fact that they can both build their strengths up together. However, a cry is heard as a woman is robbed by a thief who is making a run for the exit to the market and away from Garreg Mach. She begs for someone to stop him and both Hotaru and Nevar instinctively leap into action. Hotaru picks up her heaviest rock and throws it hard in the direction of the runaway thief. Nevar, watching the rock, casts a dark spell that sets the rock on fire with a deep purple flame. The rock hits the thief, knocking him out and trapping him in the dark magic. Thanks to this unconventional strategy they are able to apprehend him and the woman's things are recovered. She's definitely intimidated by their strength and says as such, but thanks them for their kindness and even rewards them for it with gold. Both Nevar and Hotaru are ecstactic that they did well. Hotaru suggests that they go celebrate by buying some expensive honey and making a honey bath, since its good for the skin especially after hard training, and Nevar is very very excited to agree. They both head off to celebrate together.

Out in the gardens at Garreg Mach, Nimue is practicing her dancing when she happens to hear footsteps approach. She stops for a moment, tensing, and then recognises the steps. Calling out to Nevar and waving him over. He's a little nervous at first, but admits that he caught sight of her dancing practice and wanted a closer look, but didn't want her to think that he was up to no good or peeping on her. She brushes it off, saying that he's a friend and that he can watch all he wants - just don't touch. Nevar understands, admitting he also doesn't like to be touched by unfamiliar people. Nimue corrects and states that she doesn't like to be touched by anyone, friend or stranger. Nevar seems a little curious, but he doesn't press it and simply replies that he understands. He doesn't want to interrupt her and he's content to watch her perform.

At the end of her dance, Nevar applauds Nimue's performance and says he's impressed by how flexible and nimble she is when she moves around. She's flattered by the compliments, but says she's still adjusting to dancing again without people leering at her. It's nice to have someone who appreciates the performance rather than just watches her body. She feels more human like this. Nevar admits he doesn't understand why they'd do something like that, when the performance was so captivating and pretty. Nimue, assuming he's just naive about that, gives him a big smile and promises he can come see her next dance practice too since he was so nice this time. They both agree to meet up again next time.

They all creep closer, and the comments worsen, causing Nevar to visibly start to get angry. He jumps up to confront them, which startles Nimue out of her dance routine adn she sees them as well. She also gets angry, but also very frightened. Nevar uses his magic to scare the soldiers off, but now Nimue is too shy to perform again.

Nevar tries to encourage her to keep trying, insisting that he enjoyed her dancing and saying that she was doing really well, but Nimue absolutely refuses. She confesses to Nevar how much she hates when people leer at her body while she dances, because she just feels like an object to be lusted over rather than a performer to be appreciated for her art. Nimue starts to cry and Nevar wants to comfort her, but stops himself because he remembers that she doesn't like to be touched either. Hesitant, he asks if the men who talked about her like that when she danced would also try to touch her and Nimue confirms it. That makes him even more angry, and he promises to get vengeance for her if he ever sees anyone try that again on her. Nimue is touched, but says there's no need. Nevar insists, because he also knows what it is like to be touched without consent. Nimue is surprised, but doesn't push him to tell further, she thanks him for being understanding.

Nevar comes to Nimue one afternoon in the post time skip, asking if she'd mind following him. He's been thinking about how to make a safe place for her to practice, but with people who support her as her audience. He brings her up to Sephtis' office, and out onto the balcony there. He has assembled the rest of the Emerald Dragons to be her supportive and captive audience, and she is able to perform for people who want to see her and not her body. To great cheers she does a whole show of her practice for them, and afterwards she comes to thank Nevar for all he's done to help her. She doesn't touch him, but she blows him a kiss to say she appreciates his hard work, and he does the same back to her in appreciation. They both remark about how much theyve become good friends together through this, and vow to continue to stand by each other's sides on the battlefield as well.

As Amaterasu is out for a walk, she is enjoying looking through the flowers and picking a few in order to add to the many that already decorate her long hair. Checking each flower carefully before she wears it, she happens to glance over at another part of the garden in time to see Nevar. This makes her happy, and she immediately heads over to see what her friend is doing. Nevar is by the beehives, a fact that makes Amaterasu hesitant to approach any closer because she absolutely loathes bees. She hangs back, but can see that Nevar has opened one of the hives and is in the process of sticking his hand directly into the hive in order to get at the raw honey inside. Amaterasu panics, thinking that Nevar is going to get attacked by the bees for raiding their hive. She calls out to him and tells him to stay back because she doesn't want him to get hurt, but Nevar sees her there and laughs. He explains that there's no need to worry, the bees won't come out of the hive to attack because he's used a spell he made in order to put them to sleep. That way he can get as much sweet delicious honey as he wants without them stinging him for it. Amaterasu is sceptical, but cautiously approaches to look where Nevar is pointing, and she can see that the bees are indeed asleep. She still worries, and tells him not to take too long in case they wake up. He promises, and tells her he'll save her some honey too.

Nevar is approached by Amaterasu after class one afternoon and the two are excited and happy to see each other. She asks if Nevar is free now that they are done with their lesson, because she got some more flowers that she wants to use with people and thinks would look lovely in Nevar's hair. She explains that she'd like to try out a couple of styles with him, and Nevar very happily agrees. He and Amaterasu sit together in the classroom and she begins to work on his hair, only to hear a buzzing sound suddenly. All at once, a bee that had gotten caught in Nevar's sleeve whilst he was raiding the hives for honey has woken up and is now crawling to freedom. Shocked, Amaterasu immediately leaps up and runs to the other side of the room panicking. Nevar is jolted by her sudden screams and movement, and panics a little himself, only to see that its a bee. He quickly catches it whilst it is still too sleepy to sting, and lets it go out of the window for Amaterasu. He assures her that its safe now, and that it was probably just a stray bee he didn't notice while he was looking for honey. She's very rattled and reminds him that she doesn't like bees at all, and worries that he might just attract more bees if he's always getting covered in honey and raiding the hives. Nevar replies that surely she is doing the same, since she always covers herself in flowers, which bees like. Amaterasu pauses for a moment, but says she doesn't want to stop wearing flowers, and she knows that she can't stop Nevar from going after honey either. Suddenly, Nevar gets an idea, and he promises to come back with it soon.

In part two of Amber Scales, Nevar comes up to Amaterasu excitedly, almost bursting with delight as he says he has found the solution to her worries. When he gets close, he presents to her a small silver pendant with a charm on it, in the shape of a little bee. Amaterasu is worried at first, as it has a bee on it and she is still afraid of them. Nevar explains, however, that this bee will have the opposite effect as he has made it with magic that can repel bees entirely, or put them to sleep if they get too close to her. That way, when she is wearing flowers she won't get any bees in her hair or clothing so long as she is wearing the charm. Equally, if she is around him after he has been raiding the hives, then Amaterasu won't wake any of the bees and won't have to worry. Amaterasu is absolutely delighted by this and thanks Nevar profusely for his kindness. He hugs her and tells her that she is one of his special friends and he wants to protect her. Not just from enemies on the battlefield, but also from the things that she is afraid of. He has thought long and hard about this, and he's very pleased that its worked. He and Amaterasu both decide they'll go get honey together now since they don't have to worry about bees.

Both running late for class, Rusalka and Nevar come sprinting from opposite ends of the corridor, both completely wrapped up in their own panic, overthinking and rushed thoughts they both end up crashing headlong into each other. Nevar falls backwards and is left dazed, panicking because banging heads with Rusalka was very painful and he doesn't like to be in pain. Rusalka is shocked and overwhelmed by the sudden pain as well, but mostly out of confusion as to what just happened. They both are quickly overwhelmed by their own emotions, and before either of them stop to think about who they may have just run into, they both instinctively fire dark magic spells at each other. The magic causes the corridor to fill with smoke, knocking banners off of the walls and cracking the brickwork. As the chaos clears, they both realise just who they were attacking, and that causes yet more panic. Rusalka is quick to start apologising profusely, and sobbing about how he's probably hurt a friend and that they're both going to get into immense trouble for all the damage they've caused. Nevar, however, gets annoyed that they're going to get into trouble and that they'll probably get yelled at for this. He starts to get angry and raise his voice, which only makes Rusalka cry harder. The two are both complete disasters til Sephtis appears, clearing up the smoke and repairing the damage with magic, he tells the both of them to take a moment to calm down. He's not angry, and they both will need to settle their differences with this once they're both calmer and have cleared their heads.

Later, Rusalka and Nevar meet after class. They are much calmer than they were before and they both take a moment to collect themselves, staring at each other awkwardly as they don't know how to initiate the conversation. Eventually Nevar relents and begrudgingly apologises for attacking Rusalka and for scaring him. He admits he overreacted and that he was just confused because it hurt being bumped into. Rusalka also quickly apologises and admits that he wasn't looking where he was going, which probably lead to them both running into each other. He also apologises for his dark magic too, because he was scared by the noise and pain and lost control. Nevar also admits that he wasn't looking where he was going, because he was thinking about not wanting to be late. The two realise that they were both completely distracted at the time and that it was a complete accident that they happened to bang into each other in that moment. Since neither of them are at fault, it actually makes them both laugh a little. Reassured, Rusalka promises to be more careful next time so that they don't clash again, and Nevar agrees. They both decide they should walk to class together next time, so that they both get there on time.

Nevar arrives at Sephtis' office after a particularly bad day and in a particularly bad mood, for the first of his individual counselling sessions with his teacher. Sephtis is calm and firm, but not angry towards him, and asks him to explain why he was sent out of class with the Black Eagles today. Nevar huffily sits in the chair and declares loudly that it wasn't his fault and that the rest of the class started it, but Sephtis gets him to take a moment to calm himself and then talk. Sephtis waits, and eventually Nevar confesses that he was told to leave because he lashed out at Ferdinand for lecturing him on his class attendance and about how good students should always go to class and pay attention. It annoyed Nevar, and he got angry at how condescending Ferdinand was being and so he hexed him. This is what made Manuela send him out. Sephtis listens, though its clear he was already informed of the situation beforehand. He lets Nevar speak his side of the story, and then asks him if he thinks that hexing Ferdinand was the right thing to do in this situation, given the consequences. Nevar begrudgingly admits that it probably wasn't the best thing but that he thinks Ferdinand deserves it. That makes Sephtis laugh, and he offhandedly agrees maybe he did, but that Nevar needs to learn to work through his anger and frustration so that he isn't punished for how he feels about things. They discuss the best ways, and Nevar thanks Sephtis for giving him some ways to cope that he can at least try - even if he isn't convinced that they will work right away or every time. Sephtis encourages him to try his best and says that his classes are always there if Nevar needs a break from the Black Eagles.

B Support

Coming for his second counselling session, Nevar is much more cheery and even asks Sephtis how he is doing as well. Sephtis is delighted to see Nevar in a better mood, and is happy to just have a pleasant chat with him. Even showing Nevar a new collection of moths who just emerged - which Nevar finds fascinating. Their conversation, however, is interrupted by a knock that immediately puts Nevar on edge. To his disdain, he discovers that it is Seteth interrupting their session to speak to Sephtis. Cautious of Nevar and Seteth's bad relations, Sephtis attempts to mediate things and speak with Seteth about what he has come to see them for. Seteth explains to Sephtis that he is following up on Nevar's repeated class absences and the fact that he has also failed to turn up for his detentions and punishments and that now more serious action needs to be taken. Sephtis assures Seteth that the matter is being handled, but Seteth is sterner and insists that Nevar be punished properly for antagonising the other students. Nevar very quickly riles up, hating to see his teacher be talked down to like this, as well as feeling hurt and scared by Seteth demanding he face punishment. He starts preparing magic, a fact that draws the attention of both teachers, but doesn't yet use it. Seteth begins to explain that this is why Nevar is a problem and why he must be dealt with but Sephtis silences him, turning to Nevar and watching. With Sephtis' encouragement, Nevar takes several breaths and carefully counts down to calm himself down, before removing himself from the situation by leaving the office quietly. Sephtis then asks Seteth to leave and he will ensure the matter is handled appropriately and that he need not interfere further. When Seteth is gone, he finds Nevar in the Emerald Dragons classroom, and commends him for handling the situation well. Nevar explains it was only because Sephtis was there for him, but Sephtis encourages that this is a good start and that Nevar should be proud of himself for it.

A Support

In the post time skip, Nevar comes to see Sephtis himself with good news, inviting himself in and asking if they can do a counselling session like they had done back when he was still a student. Sephtis agrees, and asks if something is bothering Nevar that he wants to talk about. Nevar states that it is actually the opposite, and that he wants to tell Sephtis how his methods have been working well for him and how he feels he is finally handling things so much better now. Sephtis is pleased to hear it, and invites Nevar to sit whilst he makes them both tea, and to tell him the whole story. Nevar eagerly explains how he once again encountered a situation in which he began to feel overwhelmed and angry, with soldiers picking on him because of his facial scarring and his odd behavior. Nevar admits that he felt angry, and that he wanted to hurt them for the nasty things that they said about him, and Sephtis agrees that he understands feeling that way too. However, as Nevar goes on to elaborate, he did not attack them and he didn't even let his magic get out of control. He simply took some deep breaths and removed himself from the situation, and Nevar explains that he went to go get some honey and take a break by himself until he felt calm enough to be around people again. Then when he realised he'd done as Sephtis had advised him, he got very excited and simply had to tell him right away that it had worked. Sephtis is very pleased to hear it and admits he is very proud of how much Nevar has grown over the years and how much stronger he is because of all his hard work. He tells him to keep doing what he's doing, and that even if he feels fine he can always come and see him any time like this to talk about problems or worries or anything like that. Nevar says that he trusts Sephtis, something very rare for him, and that he's grateful to have one teacher who has believed in him all this time. He promises to keep working hard not just for himself but also for all of the Emerald Dragons.

Edelgard approaches Nevar after class one afternoon, pleased to see that he actually attended a lesson with her and the rest of the Black Eagles today. Nevar is guarded and admits that it was just because he wanted to be with his Lord, and that she shouldn't take it as any kind of trust in her or in the other members of the class. Edelgard says she understands, but laments that he refuses to engage with her and the others. She asks him why he doesn't want to bond with the class, and Nevar retorts that he doesn't want to, and that he knows a lot of the other Black Eagles look down on him and judge him because of his behaviour and because of the rumours about him. He doesn't want their pity and so he doesn't want to be around them. Edelgard is saddened by this, and talks to him about the importance of cooperation and how they need to stand united if they are to become strong as both a house and, one day, as a unit. She knows that Nevar is strong in battle and has a lot he can contribute, and such she thinks that if he learns to work alongside the Black Eagles he could do really well. Nevar disagrees, and explains he feels that they work just fine together without him, and that there's no need for him to be there aside from his duty as his Lord's retainer. Saying that, he strides off, loudly challenging that Edelgard cannot convince him otherwise. Edelgard is left behind to wonder what the best course of action is, if she cannot convince him by ideals and words.

Once again, during Crimson Flower, Edelgard approaches Nevar one afternoon, and asks to speak with him. Nevar is, again, guarded and asks if she is going to lecture him again and if so he doesn't want to hear it. She shakes her head, and confesses that she has been thinking things over. Edelgard explains that she cannot force Nevar to like the rest of his class, or to be friends with them, but she does want to find a way that she can at least ensure his loyalty. For her, having a loyal and cohesive force behind her is important to the future stability of all of them and of the Empire. Nevar seems unconvinced, and wonders aloud what she wants with this. Edelgard offers him payment for his services. If he won't support her as a friend, then he will be compensated for his services as a soldier in her army. She offers him a jar of honey as a token of this, and says she can always get him more if he wants it. Since they broke away from the Church getting luxuries like this has been hard and she knows that he has been missing his favourite food. Shockingly, Nevar is very easily won over by this and delighted to have the chance to eat honey again. He admits that he'd prefer things this way, and says that he will stay on her side as long as his Lord does and as long as she sweetens the deal for him. It isn't perfect, but Edelgard is at least glad that they have come to some agreement on this.

He catches sight of Nevar in the bushes nearby and goes to ask him what he's doing, only to be met with defensive hissing and Nevar ready to fire a spell at him. This also puts Hubert on the defensive and the two end up in a tense standoff. Hubert is first to break the silence, asking why Nevar is trying to stalk and attack him. It takes a lot of pressing, but Nevar eventually admits he is here to take Hubert down for getting in the way of his Lord's ambitions. Hubert at first has no idea, and then realises that it must have something to do with Glade and Edelgard's friendship. He asks Nevar if he is jealous that his Lord has another person he is interested in, and has to dodge a spell from a very frustrated and angry Nevar. He shouts that he's not jealous, but that he can see Hubert will interfere in Glade's desire to be close to Edelgard and that he will not stand for that as Glade's retainer. Hubert merely smirks and dares him to try that again, readying his own dark spell. He reminds Nevar that he is also a retainer, and that his duty is first and foremost to the future Emperor and to her desires as well. He tells Nevar to leave him alone and stop bothering him this late, as he has things to do for his Lady, and remarks that perhaps Nevar should go and focus on his Lord rather than on petty and pathetic assassination attempts. Nevar is highly displeased by this, but slinks off into the darkness.

In Crimson Flower, Hubert and Nevar find themselves both observing Edelgard and Glade out for a walk together. They are mostly silent, and both seem to be displeased to be in each other's presence. It's eventually Nevar who breaks their silence by remarking that Glade always looks so happy when he's with Edelgard, and that that makes him happy. Hubert merely nods and notes that Edelgard has seemed much happier when around him than she does when she is working on her own. He thinks that their friendship is likely doing good for her health and wellbeing as well as useful for keeping up with her troops. Nevar openly says it makes her seem human - and then quickly clarifies that he means that in the sense of she is one of them, and not some unreachable authority who merely dictates but does not know her people. He expects hostility from Hubert, thinking he's accidentally insulted Edelgard, but surprisingly Hubert agrees with him. Hubert explains that he doesn't want to interfere with it since it is doing Edelgard good, and he urges Nevar to also not interfere. Nevar merely says he wasn't going to - he wants Glade's happiness to be preserved. He does, however, sternly tell Hubert that this does not in any way make them friends, and Hubert agrees wholeheartedly.

Yuri, whilst out for a walk in the marketplace in Abyss, happens to accidentally stumble upon Nevar who is talking to a merchant nearby. He hangs back, a little concerned to see him down here alone and knowing what Nevar said and how he reacted when the two first met in person once again. However, Yuri knows that the merchant who Nevar is talking to is also extremely shady and is likely trying to take advantage of him. Unable to let it go without doing something, Yuri chooses to intervene and threatens the shady merchant into leaving Nevar alone. Nevar, however, immediately panics seeing Yuri and assumes that he has come to pose a threat to him - especially having seen Yuri act so coldly towards the merchant he was talking to.

Scared and angry, Nevar starts to lash out at Yuri. He berates him for interfering in his business and accuses him of meddling and trying to get things out of it for himself. Because, in Nevar’s mind, it has always been about what Yuri wants and gets. Yuri protests, trying to calm him and insisting that he was just passing by. It doesn’t work and Nevar attacks Yuri, almost calling him by another name but he doesn’t get to speak it before Yuri uses a spell to put him to sleep. Saddened, Yuri takes the now unconscious Nevar back to his class and leaves him there, apologising for using magic on him - but explaining that he doesn’t want Nevar to hurt himself or anyone else.

B Support

Yuri goes to speak with Sephtis regarding the situation, as he does want to repair some kind of bonds between himself and Nevar, but doesn’t know the best approach given how his presence always makes Nevar incredibly hostile towards him. Sephtis explains that he understands, but that sometimes bonds that have been damaged as severely as this cannot always be mended the way we might want them to be. Yuri understands this, but asserts that there has to be something that can be done about this.

At that moment, Nevar happens to enter the room to speak to Sephtis and leaps out of his skin with shock at seeing Yuri there. He’s immediately hostile, which leads to Yuri remarking how this is exactly what he meant. Sephtis steps in as mediator, and asks Nevar to sit and try to talk this out with Yuri, and that he will remain here to ensure he is safe. Nevar reluctantly lets him, and Yuri starts by apologising for their bad encounters before. He explains that he knows Nevar has a lot of built up trauma and resentment towards him and towards their mother for what he’s gone through. He explains he can’t take any of that back, even if he wishes he could, but he does point out that he was also a child and there really wasn’t anything that he could have done to stop their mother abandoning Nevar anyways.

This upsets Nevar more, as he has spent so much of his life blaming Yuri he cannot process the idea that three wasn’t actually anything Yuri could have done about his situation anyways. He starts to lash out, accusing Yuri of never caring about him and of leaving him to die. Yuri gets defensive and calls Nevar foolish for not seeing the whole issue, which only leads to both of them trying to attack each other. Sephtis is quick to step in, putting the both of them to sleep with his moths. He sighs, deciding it is best to separate them for the moment and return to this another time.

A Support

In the post timeskip, Yuri approaches Nevar one evening. He doesn’t get close, but leaves honey out as a peace offering to him. Nevar cautiously takes it, but doesn’t open it and coldly asks what Yuri wants with him. Though he is calmer and less likely to lash out, he is still distrustful of his half brother. Yuri puts his hands up to show he isn’t about to attack either, insisting that he has done a lot of thinking and wants to talk. He knows that Nevar will probably hate him forever, and he’s come to terms with that, but he at least wants a final talk with him about everything.

Yuri asks Nevar if he remembers how he got his name. Nevar shakes his head and says he only vaguely remembers having it one day, and that someone gave it to him but he doesn’t know who it was. Just that it wasn’t his mother.

A flashback begins, showing a very young Nevar and a young Yuri sat outside a dilapidated house, watching the trees nearby. Ravens are perched in the tree, and the young Nevar remarks how much he likes them because of how, despite being birds of bad omen, they still carry on and don’t let it affect them. Yuri asks Nevar if he’d call himself a raven, because he’s also seen as a bad omen - which makes Nevar sniffle because he knows that’s what their mother refers to him as. He says he doesn’t want to be a bad omen, he wants to be the opposite of it. Yuri, in his young logic, says that maybe a backwards raven could be a good omen - and so he turns the word backwards and calls Nevar his name for the first time. Nevar likes it and thanks him, saying finally he has a real name.

Back in the present, Nevar is shaken up by the memories, but admits now that he recalls it. He says he always felt jealous of Yuri even back then. Because he had a name and was loved and cared for. Yuri says that, even if he couldn’t do much to stop all the bad things that happened, he did always care for Nevar. He tried to look for him when he was old enough and when he started working as a bandit, but never found him. For that, he apologises. Nevar shakes his head and says he doesn’t want apologies. His past is how it is and he has to be stronger now because he doesn’t want to be angry forever. He can’t forgive their mother, and he’s unsure if he’ll forgive Yuri, but he can at least understand him a little. Yuri says that that is good enough for him, and offers to never speak to him again if Nevar would prefer that. Nevar shrugs and says he isn’t certain how he feels yet. With that, the two part ways.

Late night at Garreg Mach Monastery, in the Academy Phase, Flayn happens upon Nevar hiding behind a pillar outside of the monastery doors. A little nervous, she hesitates when it comes to approaching him as she knows that he has been extremely hostile to her before. However, her desire to warn him that he may get in trouble for being where he is outweighs her fear and she comes closer. Flayn informs Nevar that he should remember how he has been banned from going near and entering the monastery because of his behaviour, and that her brother is around and she doesn't know what might happen if he catches Nevar here. Nevar is quite hostile in return, reminding Flayn that it is because she overreacted that he even received that ban in the first place. The two have a small dispute, with Flayn putting forward that she felt Nevar was rude and violent for trying to attack her that day and that she only reacted in that way because she was terrified he would do actual harm to her. Nevar, on the other hand, refuted that had she not touched him as he had told her multiple times that day, then he wouldn't have flown off of the handle so violently.

A quick flashback shows the two's previous interaction that lead to Nevar's ban from the church. Flayn had been trying to befriend Nevar, with good intentions, but overstepped a boundary when she grabbed his arm as he tried to run away from her. He was less inclined to be social and trusting, as he has difficulty interacting with others. He was, at the time, also trying to find somewhere quiet because the loud crowds and noises of the Academy were extremely overstimulating and overwhelming for him. Her grabbing causes him to scream and try and squirm away from her, begging her not to touch him. Flayn persists and grabs him again as he tries to escape - which causes Nevar to attack her with a dark spell. It is only this portion of their confrontation, however, that is witnessed by Seteth.

Back in the present, Nevar explains that he's still blamed for that altercation, and he doesn't want to be around Flayn because of it. He's bored and tired of the Church all hating him for reasonable self defense, and he's only here because his Lord went inside and that if she didn't mind, could she leave him alone. Flayn is quiet at this, thinking the situation over. She quietly apologises and agrees she'll leave, but that he should still be careful. She won't tell Seteth that Nevar is here, but she can't stop him from snooping around if he suspects something.

B Support

Later on in the Academy Phase, after Flayn has been rescued from her kidnapping, she happens to pass by Nevar who is sat on one of the garden chairs under the pagoda. He's reading a book and scoffing honey out of a jar with his fingers. Flayn is intrigued, and approaches to ask him what he's doing. Nevar, surprised by her sudden appearance, gets on the defensive and asks to be left alone. He accuses her of stalking him and trying to get him in trouble with her brother. Flayn quickly states that this is mere coincidence and that she has no intention of running to Seteth about this. In fact, she confesses, since he has found him now she'd like to thank him for his work in helping free her from her kidnappers. She explains that she saw him fighting alongside the others, and was surprised because she knows that Nevar would have no reason to want to rescue someone from the church after all. Nevar retorts that he only went because his Lord and his friends did, but Flayn sees through it and thanks him for caring even if only a little.

Flayn also apologises for her previous boundary breaking, saying that she's been curious of Nevar for a while because of all the students at Garreg Mach he is the one she understands the least about. All she has wanted is to learn more about him. Nevar cuts her off, shaking his head and saying he doesn't want to talk about himself or have what he's been through be known by everyone here. When Flayn asks why he simply states that it is too depressing. Flayn tries to reason, saying she has been through hardship as well and understands that the past can be difficult to talk about. However Nevar harshly calls her naiive and incapable of even imagining some of the things he has seen and done in his life. He once again says he doesn't want to talk about it and that he doesn't like the questioning.

Nevar goes on to call Flayn's actions out, asking her if she would like it if he was as intrusive about her personal life and childhood as she is being with him. Flayn argues she wants to learn, but stops when she sees he's got a good point. She takes a moment, and apologises. She admits she may still have things to learn about boundaries with people and that she's sorry for overstepping with him once again. Flayn also thanks him for not attacking her for it - to which he says he's also learning to control his anger too. In a small moment of kindness, he does thank her and tells her he appreciates her understanding.

A Support

In the War Phase of Amber Scales, Flayn comes by Nevar standing inside the rubble of Garreg Mach Monastery. He hears her footsteps and turns to look at her, remarking that he can come in here now since the Church can't really do anything to stop him. Flayn says he's no longer banned from being here anyways, and that she has done her best to talk some sense into Seteth about the ban and about how Nevar has been treated by the Church. She stands a little ways from him, and doesn't get too close even whilst they talk, but she explains that the Church used to be such a comfort for her until the truth came out about it all. Now she just feels lost and abandoned by people she once called family. Nevar lets her speak, and says he knows very well how it feels to be abandoned too, and that the loneliness and emptiness that it causes can get incredibly overwhelming. Flayn looks like she's about to question more, but stops herself, saying that he doesn't have to elaborate unless he wants to and that she understands. Nevar doesn't divulge his past, but he does remark on how the Church and the Academy had abandoned him right from the start.

Flayn takes it in, and agrees. She then promises that she will no longer abandon Nevar, and that even if they aren't friends they are still allies fighting for the same cause. For the truth. She says that Nevar doesn't have to like her or forive her, or indeed forgive the Church she once supported so strongly, but that no matter what she will do what she can to aid him. On the battlefield she will protect him, just like she will the rest of the Emerald Dragons - who she calls her new family. Nevar laughs and says she's still naiive, but he's smiling a little now. He agrees that they are allies, and that he has seen Flayn has grown and understood a lot over this time. She doesn't need to question his past because he's not the important factor here, and he's glad that she's learnt to focus her curiosity so that it doesn't overstep his boundaries. They don't declare themselves friends, but both of them seem to reach a mutual conclusion that they are alright with one another now. Nevar says he wants to go eat some honey, and Flayn says she'll help calm the bees so they can harvest some fresh for them both.

Story

One afternoon, Yuri comes to see Byleth with extremely worrying news. Though he would not normally ask this of another person, he needs their help in dealing with some bandits who are causing trouble in a nearby village. They are a rival gang to his own goons, and normally he is good at keeping them in line without assistance as they are not known for being particularly violent or troublesome for him. However, this has changed and now he needs more backup. This is because they have kidnapped Yuri’s mother and are holding her hostage in exchange for information and money that he has. Yuri, understandably, wants to get his mother back safely and is happy to pay Byleth in return for their help as well. Byleth shakes their head and says Yuri need not worry about having to pay for this and that they can investigate.

However, before they can continue the discussion further there comes a noise from nearby. As it turns out, Nevar was listening in on the conversation and heard that it was about his and Yuri’s mother. He’s much more frustrated by the situation and says he thinks they should just let her die, considering she abandoned him all those years ago. Yuri tries to reason with him, explaining that he cannot just let his mother die - and that surely abandoning her like she abandoned Nevar would only make Nevar as bad as she is. Nevar doesn't like that reasoning and attempts to argue more, but Byleth gently intervenes. They suggest that they go, and perhaps this rescue can be a way in which Nevar shows his mother that he is alive and has survived despite her lack of faith in him. Yuri agrees with Byleth in order to try and encourage Nevar, but it is very clear that he doesn’t believe that she will acknowledge Nevar in any way. Nevar also appears unconvinced but reluctantly agrees to go with them.

In the village, bandits have overrun the place and are in the process of looting the houses and villagers. Byleth can gain additional rewards for the number of houses they manage to protect from the bandits. Yuri explains that it is the chief who has his mother hostage and is the one who has issues with him. Nevar is reluctant and angry, wanting this over with he charges in headlong and the battle begins before others are truly prepared. Routing the enemy and defeating the bandit leader will mean that Yuri and Nevar’s mother is thankfully rescued. Byleth chooses to stay with Nevar as Yuri goes to see his mother and rescue her. Nevar speaks quietly with Byleth whilst they wait.

He confesses that he doesn’t think that his mother will care at all that he is here, and truthfully he doesn’t want to see her either. Though he knows he could show he has survived despite how little she believed in him as a child and he could finally say all the things he has been bottling up all this time - Nevar doesn’t really know if it would actually make him feel better for it. Byleth commends Nevar’s maturity and understanding in this, and promises that he doesn’t have to go through with it if he doesn’t want to. More than anything, Byleth is grateful that he chose to help Yuri despite his own feelings on the situation. Nevar does, however, remind Byleth that this does not mean he has any particular sentiments towards Yuri either.

Yuri returns and it is exactly as he expected. His mother wanted nothing to do with her other child and even said to him “I have only one son, and that is you.” Yuri apologises, but Nevar just tells him to shut up. He does not attack or lash out, but he is very very clearly hurt and angered by the knowledge. Even if he tried to brace himself for the pain, he is still hurt. Byleth can only look on sadly as Yuri explains that his mother has chosen to return home for now, and that she does not wish to see any of them. He apologises again to Nevar, and says he believes she is wrong to do this. Nevar simply shrugs and says he wants to go home now.

Availability, Units, and Suggested Level

Available Until 31/12

Unit(s): Byleth, Yuri, Nevar

Suggested Level: 16 (Normal/Hard) 21 (Maddening)

Given his personal ability, controlling and managing Nevar can be the trickiest part of this map. Allowing for him to take too much damage from enemies could very easily result in him turning on Byleth and becoming an enemy unit. His defeat in battle still counting as an overall loss. This means losing control of Nevar as a unit can quickly end a campaign. That being said, Nevar's personal skill flipping the other way, and increasing his critical damage against enemy units, can prove extremely useful in dealing with the large numbers of enemies that will be faced on this map. Though it is not mandatory to do so, it can be beneficial to bring Glade de Foxguard along in order to increase Nevar's critical hit chances as well.

Yuri's speed and movement is a good advantage on this map, and as he begins separated from the rest of the group it will mean he can quickly catch up with the rest of the party, but he will need to be protected or met half way to prevent enemy units from overwhelming him too much. If Nevar's faith has been studied high enough, he can also use Warp in order to bring Yuri back among his peers. It is also recommended that at least one healer be present, but as the pool of available units in Amber Scales as a whole is already low, chances are that the majority of the cast will be brought along in this paralogue.

As this is a defeat all enemies map, speed is key in order to cut through the large number of enemies and reinforcements that will appear during the battle, particularly on Maddening mode, and being able to one shot enemies will greatly help in cutting down the numbers to a more manageable amount before they have chance to appear. Magic is also useful for taking down enemies from a distance, and the lack of archers among enemy forces also make it easy for flying units to attack without severe risk.
