Random Advice for Furry Character Design

Posted 2 years, 11 months ago by scpkid

   1. You can always start with zoology... Maybe this is very broad sounding, but I've received many ideas for new characters because I would start with a Genus, and study the cladogram. Then, I would look into subspecies. And from there, I would find some inspiration... okay maybe that sounds confusing too and doesn't help. WHAT I MEAN IS... Wikipedia can be a great source for inspiration. Spend time browsing pages on animals, you will end up discovering something new and interesting. If I didn't study Canis, I would never of learned about the Indian wolf, the Darwin's fox, or Bush dog!

   2. To further add to studying: take some time to learn about the animal you end up choosing. Learn about their habitat, conservation status, diet, anything you find interesting. This may have no impact on the actual design outcome, but you may learn something new or interesting and make you appreciate your chosen animal species. I feel I learn something new about the Virginia Opossum everytime I research them. Did you know that the back opposable thumbs of an Virginia Opossum don't have a nail/claw at all?  I still do give them a claw though lol.

   3. Let natural markings be your starting point. Even if you go with an unnatural design or wild colors, studying real markings can inspire you a lot. You can incorporate parts of real markings or colors and it will help the final design still read as that animal even if you use a lot of wild colors/other markings. (If that is your intention, of course.)

   4. Subspecies an be a great source of inspiration as well. Certain subspecies can also have some unique traits, coloration, etc depending on the animal. When I'm designing characters, I love giving them a specific subspecies, mostly because in a way it educates other people about a subspecies they may not know exists. Tex isn't just a coyote, he's a California valley coyote! Which are similar to Canis latrans Coyote but have larger ears.

   5. Don't be afraid to stylize the animal in any way YOU personally enjoy. Though, it's always good to understand the shapes first before stylization. Some people may be afraid their animals may end up "dog" like or not use the "right" nose. In the end, it's whatever you enjoy. There are many instances I enjoy peoples very specific stylization of animals. It can also really contribute to the final design!

   6. For me I use hybrids as an excuse to take parts from two different animals I like best, and put together! But it can lead to some really good designs! When I was making my deer fursona, I preferred elk antlers and darker colors, but love white tail deer's nose shape and markings, so I combined the two. Of course, I could always just make a white tail deer and give it elk antlers with no other explanation or reason. But learning about elk species and traits and combining them helped inspire the end design! And they can be completely unrelated animals as well. I really love the idea of a wolf-cow fantasy hybrid. When you combine two completely different aniamls you REALLY get to have fun picking out which parts you prefer. Hooves or paws? Cow ears or wolf ears? Cow tail or wolf tail? I also liked having wolf teeth, but cow horns, cow nose but wolf eyes, and so on. But someone could make it to have a wolf nose, but horizontal cow pupils, no horns, but wolf ears and cow tail, etc.

   7. Sometimes using a moodboard can help make your design!! Sometimes I will start with a theme, a mood, a group of images, a popular aesthetic / -core, which leads to the design. Arcade is kinda a good example of this. I started WITH the moodboard/theme, I wanted something dark but neon, with sort of a neon, casino vibe? Honestly if I didn't start with that first, I would of never ended up with that design, and its one of my favorites.

   8. You don't have to go into a design knowing what you want, at all. MANY times I'm making adopts or personal characters I only have a very rough idea, or literally just the species. It's through /experimentation/ and trying new things that lead to the design. I may START with natural markings, but then I do weird things with them as I go along, try new colors I've never used before, etc. Sometimes I'll add a filter at the end, and I like it way more than what I spent an hour on.. LOL

FAQ + Etiquette

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is your adopt / character design ownership rules (or t.o.s) ?

Please see here!

What do you use to draw?

I draw on an iPad with Procreate. I mostly use default brushes: HB pencil, 6B pencil, nikko roll, bonobo chalk are some of my most commonly used brushes. I also use various brushes from True Grit Supply.

Do you do ping lists?

I don't do ping lists and I don't plan too, I'm sorry!

Do you do custom design trades?

I love custom design trades but most of the time I do not have availability for it. Still, it doesn't hurt to ask, but I get a lot of messages often especially about trades and can't reply to everyone easily. I apologize in advance if I cannot reply quickly or design trade with you.

How do I commission you?

I USED to do commissions regularly, but I had to stop. When I do open commissions again, I will announce on Twitter and through Toyhouse bulletin. I always appreciate the interest though, thank you so much. I MOST likely open commissions for character designs, I rarely do art commissions outside of it at this time.

Are you okay with inspiration?

Of course I am fine with inspiration. The only issues I have if are my designs are copied heavily for immediate profit but mainly because that is unfair to the buyer of those designs. Genuine inspiration is different. And to be honest, if you really like one of my designs and want to make something similar - just ask ! I've done this myself!! I once asked someone to make an inspired character, and I have credit on their profile. Or, if you make similar oc as mine, they can be cousins or something! Everyone is different and this may not apply to every artist. Please remember other artists are protective of their work and have every right to be. If you think someone is "copying" me, my art, my ocs, etc, do not harass them, do not comment, do not screenshot and share it around, just leave them be - because I do not care and I do not want people speaking for me. I only action privately if my art is actually being traced for profit, or stolen art that is sold (basically anything that could warrant a DMCA)

On a similar note feel free to traceg / study / paint  over my art for practice

What about inspiration from your headworld? Your profiles / page formats?

Of course you can be inspired by my headworld and/or my profiles. You can make your own, you can join mine. You can make your own story within my world. You can make a world just like mine, but make it yours. You can use the formats/designs of my pages/website to help your form your own. I've seen some inspired headworlds out there and It always makes me smile. Also, most of my profiles are other people's HTML / CSS anyways which I don't own!

Personal Toyhouse Etiquette and Boundaries

Credit to this goes to TropicalSteppe.

  • You may label designs I make as "dreamies", place them into "dreamies" fav folders, and so on. Even personal ones. It's super flattering, i honestly don't mind
  • Please do not refer to my designs / art as "HQ" or "high quality"
  • I am open to any or all questions about my art process, brushes or my design process, or any specific art advice.
  • You can always ask if you can make something inspired by me and get my personal input on a design, for fun!
  • Please respect that I only take offers on designs within my Sale/Trade folder. If you are a mutual I may be open to offers on other characters, however

  • I only publicly warn / blacklist for scammers, if I receive a chargeback, or other artists are hit by chargebacks.
  • I may quietly "blacklist" people who fail to pay me multiple times, ignore my replies about payment without any reason. I may not /hardblock/ but I will avoid doing business with you in the future (as in I will ignore your offers.) To avoid this... just be upfront and honest if you cannot pay within a certain time, or cannot pay at all. I am very unlikely to "blacklist" someone even if it happens a few times as long as you are honest that you cannot pay. It's much better than being ghosted on a payment, because that feels suspicious. Thank you for understanding.
  • Please, before you ever issue a chargeback, we can try to talk it out. Paypal takes chargebacks VERY seriously, if an artist has enough chargebacks, the artist can loose paypal access. I already had two in the past, due to two separate scammers who did mass chargebacks. Yes, even after a huge amount chargebacks by a single person, Paypal WILL side with the charbeacks even if it is obvious a scam or they are sent proof. I need my Paypal for my livelihood and happy to work something out. You can always resell designs from me as well. I can help advertise the resell for you, for example, if it is an emergency.

I didn't realize I could mass change character owner permissions.

EVERY design of mine that should be on the site should have been changed to all transfer permissions.

If you specifically want it OFF for any reason, let me know. It SHOULD be all permissions by default, which is my setting.

If for ANY reason a design is still missing permissions, please let me know in the comments below.
