Comments on Historical OC discord servers? All Comments

beetlebite smooshkin Sorry late reply, had a busy few days!

I will def let you guys know if I find any good servers or an Age of Sail specific server!

Tbh I have thought about making an Age of Sail server - it'd have a channel for art, nsfw, oc ramblings, fandom and bits of interesting trivia found whilst researching (in part because I find I enjoy discussing these points if I find something that really interests me, like when I discovered Lancaster bomber navigators often utilized astral navigation because it was one of the more reliable navigation aids available probably because I'm bit of a geek and enjoy doing astral nav exercises).

I've also thought of making a general historical OC/fiction server in the same vein but with both of those my concern is having the time to actually moderate it and make sure things are running smoothly and that unsavory folks are yeeted because of work and hopefully going to uni in 2020. I'm not sure how much work moderating a server takes since I've never done it before and not used Discord a whole lot previously?

I'd support an AoS server wholeheartedly though a general historic one might fetch more of a community if that's an aim, probably with designated categories for the different eras so that folks could slot in more comfortably if there were any way to do it. I assume that the majority would be adults and hopefully mature enough to sustain some level of decent temperament with little modding otherwise, so it hopefully wouldn't be too hard work since I'd have to assume the only toxicity would come in people taking grasp of politics/social issues/having petty arguments above anything else, which are fairly easy to deal with; you could always put out a search for mods or recruit any friends who might be down for a bit of mod work? Discord is very stream-lined to use in that there's not much that you have to mess around with and most of the work would go into rule sets and organising the channels into the appropriate sections imho but the layout of Discord lessens the blow of that a fair bit so I don't think it'd be much of a hassle to actually settle into the way it runs.

edit Big apologies for ignoring the first part, didn't mean anything rude by it at all and I'm sorry about that; don't worry about reply time! Don't mind it at all and life is a much larger priority over something like this.

That's part of what I was thinking too. I like the idea of having different categories for different time periods. I was thinking of starting with a smaller server like an AoS specific one to get a feel of how things would work and the effort taken to run things.

I would think a 3 strikes and you're out system would potentially be useful here. I use it at work and it works pretty well as long as explanations for the strikes and the ultimate block boot (though I rarely have to go past final warning) are provided and consistent. I'd have to think about what earns a strike, what goes straight to final warning and what's an instant block boot and make sure any mods are clear with that set-up.

Any server I make will be an LGBT+ friendly space that's for sure.

I'm also thinking about how to handle German WW2 characters. I understand having German WW2 OC's doesn't mean it's owner supports that character's ideologies and the owner may be writing a character that wears the German army uniform but doesn't agree with Nazi ideologies but I don't want to provide a space to the actual fascists using those characters to front their political ideologies which I have seen in WW2 OC communities and it's always uncomfortable to come across. I'd want to yeet actual fascists asap.

I know some friends and other folks who are into history and interested in a historical OC server so I will def ask around.

Don't worry about it it's no problem! I took no offence and your reply gave me some stuff to think about. I'm not great at communicating tone via text so I did worry if when I was talking about being concerned about time would come off as idk scolding? Please feel free to call me out if that's the case I don't mind at all and would rather know so I know where to watch my tone/wording in the future.

I've also run into stupidity over the WW2 thing, which is why I don't post my WW2 OCs. It SHOULD be common knowledge by now that owners/writers don't support Nazi Germany but logic fails to reach at times.

I second everything beetle said as well. Sections for themes/time periods would be great. Places for folk to share their arts and all that and a general discouragement of political talk since people don't know how to be adults about different opinions this day and age.

That's understandable and sadly true. Though I handle things from the POV of the Allies I have a know your enemy mindset so I do occasionally read stuff from Nazi Germany. I've had people get shitty with me for similar reasons when I've brought Luftwaffe pilot biographies and books dealing with how the Germans fought against the Allied night bombers for plot research. I've also had people get funny when I say I like German WW2 drama like Generation War and Napola/Before the Fall even after explaining that both extremely ant-Nazi and anti-war.

I don't want people to feel excluded or like they can't post certain characters, I've also seen some interesting material come out of writing from a German Army pov. I feel like discouraging political talk would be the way forward and a solution for that question for handling German WW2 OC's. That and it's very tiresome dealing with people who can't agree to disagree so it's something I will be jumping on and nipping in the bud as soon as I'm able.

I like that idea of different periods so if I went through with making the server it's something I'd put in for sure!

All interesting stuff. :! The problem is virtue-signalling is like a pasttime online for most anymore.Eventually folks will catch on. Horrible shit happens all throughout history and it's hypocritical to get up in arms over one just because it's one of the most recent. No logic...

Anyways, it sounds like you have a good vision, let us know what you decide and we'll be the first to join <3

Sorry for not getting back, have been asleep & doing other stuff. As to your first message, you come across just fine so don't worry! It isn't an issue at all.

A three strike system is a good idea and if it already has an established system at work it would probably be the easiest thing to implement. I also support discouraging the political talk and agree with the WWII thing; have also witnessed some of that distaste first-hand and it's a great shame, but I have a feeling that it hopefully won't be a large issue (if any at all), and that staying on top of it would probably dampen it into nonexistence on its own tbh. Basically summarising myself with the same stuff Smooshkin said: the ideas are a very solid ground to get started with something and I love the sounds of it so far
