Ive had this OC a reaLLY long time,,,, and she's changed a lot with my art. "Crestonia" started out as a username for an MMORPG I played when I was like, 12, and then I eventually turned that into an OC.

Aaaand lining it up all together is fuckin' wild omg. Back when I first made Matteo I didn't really draw very often, so I wasn't used to using refs or actually practicing intentionally to get better. Now I do that a lot more, draw several times a week, and have improved a whole lot bc of it!! My style has also Hella Evolved intentionally or not LMAO The way I've drawn him has always felt really inconsistent in part bc drawing him over and over and over has been what has helped me evolve as an artist. In drawing him I also learned that I uhhhh Hate? doing lineart snsngkdkjgh

I've been uploading stuff online ever since before I started formally studying art. XD I'm mildly miffed by the fact that unlike some people I'm unable to show the improvement through multiple images of a single character because I tend to shelve mine... I've got lots of OC art and portrait stuff though!
2006-2007. Oldest portrait I can find online. Mr. Lordi, done in MS Paint with a gradient background applied in GIMP.
2010. First attempts at making OC portraits with the explicit intent of "realism".
2015-2016. And an attempt at drawing a very creepy NPC "realistically" + stylized NPC portraits when facial features started "clicking" on me.
2017 - More realistic OC portraits
2019 - Rediscovering contrast, blur and textures.

I've never done a "draw it again" meme before, cuz I'm always disappointed at how slowly I improve even though I understand everyone improves at a different rate. But it's so much fun to see everyone's progress like this! :3

I have a more detailed journal logging this on DA but here's a simplified version. Under cut because it got long.
The 2007 "I don't need anatomy to draw anime" phase. Not bothering to learn anatomy ended up biting me in the ass later on and it took me way too long to realize my arrogant mistake and do something about it.
I seemed to improve then backpedal a lot. I switched over to realism somewhere down the lines and got stuck in the mind that I wanted to be a digital painter which was a huge mistake because I hadn't learnt anatomy and didn't understand what I was drawing.
Queue 4 year art block where I couldn't get past a sketch.
2016 was a breakthrough year; essentially my options were quit because I wasn't going anywhere or sit down and figure out why the fuck I couldn't finish anything and do something about it. I'd put way too much time into drawing (already looking at 10 years of effort) that I opted to figure out where my problem areas were and how I was going to solve them. More importantly, I finally found Proko's human anatomy for artists playlist on youtube and started working on learning anatomy. I had to learn how to shade digitally and my art was pretty damn ugly (more often than not the goal was just to finish something) but hey, I got out of that 4 year art block. My thinking at this point was get back into the swing of finishing stuff and worry about style (if it happens) later.
I did start to develop a style around 2017 though it noticed more in sketches.
Below is what I call the "2018 style" even though I didn't try using my thicker sketch lines as lineart until after my summer contract ended in September 2018. I'm happy with where I'm at and mainly interested in practicing consistency. I had to update a bunch of OC's to fit this style which is something I'm still working through.
I've been doing a bunch of style testing to refine my style and make it more economical to draw with so here's how my art looks now.
I'm still making very minor tweaks to how things look.

I think I definitely improved over the years. I switched to a painting style instead of linework. I personally enjoy it more and it's very pleasing to look at for me when other artists have a painty style as well. ^-^
