commision pet peeves?

Posted 5 years, 2 months ago (Edited 2 years, 3 months ago) by Mochi

sorry to add to the string of pet peeve threads OTL. i just thought this would be a good place for people who buy commissions and who sell commissions to vent their frustrations. ill go first to break the ice.

when artists make you pay through friends and family, its soooo sketch. also when artist say theyll have your stuff done in one week...and never get back to you or do it way after a week. like its happened so many times and i feel like its a 'give me five minutes' type of thing. like just give me your real time frame, no need got give yourself a week if you know its not going to happen.

you all have very valid points! im going to add another complaint of mine since no one has said it yet.

when people whitewash my ocs. sidif thats the main thing that annoys me. like their skin color is very clear in the ref, why make their skin lighter?

edit: nvm someone already said it lol

new rules: please dont be transphobic or racist, i cant believe i have to say this but seriously, what the heck

This happened a long time ago and I still an irritated about it to this day. Obviously not gonna namedrop becauee I gueniunely like the artists work, but it did leave such a bad taste in my mouth that I never commissioned them again

In their tos they clearly stated they accept image maps, so I made one up using the examples THEY PROVIDED and sent it to them. They came back and said "oh I don't do that" when I asked for an explanation they just ghosted me.

Like, you could have simply said "sorry I don't think I can do this one" or something, but straight up lying to my face when YOUR TOS SAYS YOU PROVIDE THIS SERVICE is poor customer service.

@ the "person posted my comm to insta without telling me and i had to screenshot it" complaint

SAME THING literally happened to me and i only found out bc their friend (who was my v good friend) told me. granted i could have asked. its been so long that its whatever at this point

People changing the colors of certain details and ignoring ref info

Yeontae and yeonsang in they cat forms have white eyes and gray sclera, but everytime i commisioned art of them, they make their iris gray and and sclera white

Same in the human form i say that their pupils are white but keep making it black(and in their refs you can see their eyes clearly, and yes i asked if they could change it 'cause maybye they got it wrong by accident, but they told me no because it looked awful, sorry for desinging them like that)

And this has happend a lot with other characters too

Like i understant it may not look normal o maybye you dont like that, or you really dont like a certain color of the oc, but if its desingned like that is for a reason mabye?

If you really dont like brigth color or you think it doesnt look right with the back ground or idk, you can play with lighting and shadow

people who randomly message you to ask if you want to purchase a commission from them, when you don't know them and haven't advertised that you're looking for commission ads... it feels so awkward to have someone message me when i don't even know how they found me to ask me if i want to commission them, and then it feels REALLY awkward to say no thanks-- i don't even make "seeking" threads for commissions in the first place for this specific reason, because i hate turning anyone down or saying no to someone when i don't want to make anyone feel like they're not talented. i obviously don't think it's bad to message people who DO post ads asking for your commission posts, but random unsolicited messages... :x

small pet peeve i’ve got when commissioning characters, is when i provide in their references that they have a beard or facial hair and the final product comes out with them clean shaven with a bit of stubble. like... that’s nice but it’s not what i specified. if you can’t draw facial hair maybe include that in your com sheet?

I don't commission (or get art of my ocs in general) often, but something that bugs me is people not realizing how they act really affects if someone's going to consider commissioning them.

Hard to swallow pill for some people but if they're extremely snappy, badmouth customers (unless the customer was rude/scamming them), or use guilt-tripping to advertise themselves, it's off-putting. And to me people who do constantly do things like that are people I don't want to work with.

I really hate it when people dont send WIPs (works in progress) or sketches before finishing, I've had to ask for so many edits on certain pieces because the artist forgot important details to the character(s), either that or they give them a pose i dont like and then i get all anxious cause i dont wanna make them mad and have them redo the whole thing.

For me, WIPs are important as i want the character to match the ref. Im not all that picky, things like a button or peice of small unimportant jewelry is fine but if they get the general body type or hair wrong imma lose my mind XD

I kinda Hate it when commissioners are like... strangely brusque? Like, you're buying my art and all, but you sure don't seem that interested in it... You don't have to be overloaded with enthusiasm or anything, but it feels like sort of a common courtesy to at least be communicative and whatnot.

From a buyer's perspective, I think WIPs are super duper important and it bugs me too when they aren't offered. It's easier for both parties since the buyer can make sure they get what they're looking for while making sure the artist doesn't have to redo something major down the line.
And artists just straight-up seeming to not pay attention to ref details is kind of a pain in the backside too. I completely understand missing a minor detail here and there, but there shouldn't be flaws regarding the major points...

Spookers

Lack of updates/Communication is one of the biggest peeves I have which seems to be a common consensus here. If you go dead silent on me for 2 months don't get agitated when i poke you gently asking where things are progress wise. If you don't have a trello I have no idea what your status is and thus I don't even know if you've bothered to start or not.

Also I've unfortunately been a victim of the white washing thing with a couple of my ocs :( I just didn't know what to say at the time so I kind of bit the bullet and now one of my ocs has art where he's just.. uncomfortably ashy/pasty compared to his official ref. >_>; I'm just not really sure why you can't just.... color pick..?

It's a personal peeve of mine but if you're struggling to draw my oc, please just tell me. I can very happily change my order for you to make your life easier. I've had artists actively complain to me about how horrible they think the art looks and how it's turning out. It just makes ME feel bad for asking at all despite them being the one to accept without hesitation?
