commision pet peeves?

Posted 5 years, 1 month ago (Edited 2 years, 3 months ago) by Mochi

sorry to add to the string of pet peeve threads OTL. i just thought this would be a good place for people who buy commissions and who sell commissions to vent their frustrations. ill go first to break the ice.

when artists make you pay through friends and family, its soooo sketch. also when artist say theyll have your stuff done in one week...and never get back to you or do it way after a week. like its happened so many times and i feel like its a 'give me five minutes' type of thing. like just give me your real time frame, no need got give yourself a week if you know its not going to happen.

you all have very valid points! im going to add another complaint of mine since no one has said it yet.

when people whitewash my ocs. sidif thats the main thing that annoys me. like their skin color is very clear in the ref, why make their skin lighter?

edit: nvm someone already said it lol

new rules: please dont be transphobic or racist, i cant believe i have to say this but seriously, what the heck

Now I'm not going to pretend I'm good at communication online because my brain is shit and likes to forget things, and I shouldn't be a hypocrite by getting upset at commissioners for taking a long time to answer my questions if I'm just as bad at it. But. When people take an entire day or more just to fill out an order form. I'm really not asking for much. Unless you've gotta write up a description for your character that nobody's drawn yet, it really shouldn't take that long. And it's an absolutely vital part of the commission process. I cannot start even brainstorming what I'll draw if I'm given no information. I have "please fill out the order form" at least three different places and people still don't. The latest commission opening I did, they claimed the slot saying they'd fill it out in the morning and they just. Didn't. I waited an entire day. Nothing. They eventually got back to me but that's a bad first impression to make. At this point, honestly, I'm a little put off from working with them again. I can understand spotty communication later on, but right from the start is worrying.

Doing commissions: People not having a proper reference for their character or having a reference with heavy shading. I'm always worried that I'll get some details/colors wrong when I'm having to use a piece of art with shading, or when all of the art in the character's gallery isn't consistent in certain things (markings, jewelry, hair etc). Also when I deliver a commission and am just left on read without any thanks, I'm always a little worried that I messed something up lmao

Buying commissions: People vanishing for weeks without a word, or when they say something like "will be finished in a week!" and yet I'm waiting without a word a month later. Like if something comes up that causes a delay please just give me a heads up that the commission will take a bit longer, I wont mind!

Idk if I'm just extra but whenever somebody commissions me and want to know everything in detail (sometimes even what brushes I use, how long I take exactly for each step,  why I do this why I do that) I start to get extremely anxious and bothered. Like basic questions are fine but when it gets very specific I just think they want to know all this because they're searching for negative aspects? Yea I'm probably overthinking this.  Mainly just curiosity these people have I guess

i really dont like it when artists make you pay through friends and family. it makes me so uncomfortable :c

LemonBear

Applejack at that point I don’t trust the artist and I refuse to commission people who try to get you to pay thru friends and family. It’s the easiest way to get scammed out of your money xc

synth Sorry to ping you, but would you be willing to DM me the first artist? That sounds like someone I wouldn't want to work with at all costs.

As an artist - it really bothers me.. or more specifically I don't get it when people leave a comment somewhere saying they want to commission me, then when I want to discuss everything with them they haven't even viewed my prices or anything at all. Like heh???? The first thing I do is to check the artists prices and TOS before contacting them. Isn't that common sense... ? And when I send them all my stuff because for some reason they can't view it themselves they still ask how much it costs.

My prices as well as anything else are linked on pretty much any damn place and social I'm on. On amino (were it mainly happens) even 3 times.. a wiki, in my bio, in all my posts. Idk why I always get weird people like this. That's extremely exhausting and makes me kinda want to stop doing commissions sometimes. Well at least on specific platforms..

I try really hard to talk to this kind of people as kind as  humanly possible but man some people... It almost feels like they're trolling

idk if this has been brought up already but I've gotten so many comms that are so low quality in regards to file quality. like the image is like 300x500 pixels or covered in jpeg artifacts like it's been through a deep frier. at least I can fix some of that stuff in photoshop but I legit spent hours relining almost a whole piece bc getting rid of the artifacts blurred the fuck out of it. one person sent me tiny af files and then a week later posted them as comm examples and ripping them from a social media post gave me better quality compared to the ones they emailed me. also nobody even knows about file management I feel so when I bring it up everyone's confused and it's frustrating to explain it every time. please please please send high quality files to people. I'm tired of having to fix half the comms i get bc everyone saves stuff as jpeg with no dpi

also another pet peeve is when ppl drop out of comms w no communication. someone dmed me out of the blue and asked for a comm so i wanted to be nice and do it. I told them it would take me a bit and they could check in if needed. I finished the fullbody+headshot sketch after ~2 weeks. sent it to them for approval and they said they already spent everything they were gonna pay bc they thought i wasn't gonna finish. like bro just fucking ask me first wth? don't just drop me without even saying anything. i told them it'd take a bit of time up front and they agreed. it's not like i disappeared for 3 months.
