commision pet peeves?

Posted 5 years, 1 month ago (Edited 2 years, 2 months ago) by Mochi

sorry to add to the string of pet peeve threads OTL. i just thought this would be a good place for people who buy commissions and who sell commissions to vent their frustrations. ill go first to break the ice.

when artists make you pay through friends and family, its soooo sketch. also when artist say theyll have your stuff done in one week...and never get back to you or do it way after a week. like its happened so many times and i feel like its a 'give me five minutes' type of thing. like just give me your real time frame, no need got give yourself a week if you know its not going to happen.

you all have very valid points! im going to add another complaint of mine since no one has said it yet.

when people whitewash my ocs. sidif thats the main thing that annoys me. like their skin color is very clear in the ref, why make their skin lighter?

edit: nvm someone already said it lol

new rules: please dont be transphobic or racist, i cant believe i have to say this but seriously, what the heck

Like if they are unsure of something PLEASE ASK ME I WONT BITE I SWEAR is my to go motto. Some people might find that pushy but it's money being spent and I'd like for the core and small details to be there!

Like one artist got not one but several obvious things wrong. And don't get me started on wrong skin tones because that's a major oof right there.

I hope that artist makes the corrections for you ;×;

It makes me a bit bothered when someone comissions a character with a clear reference and then the artist changes the design, shape of parts, etc, it happened to me a lot when I was comissioning on Wolvden lol

seeing people charge less than 10 dollars for a piece of art is very depressing to me. please don’t undercharge :/

More about YCHs [but... I mean it's still a commission right?] When I really love a YCH, end up buying/bidding and the result looks different. Different expression, colors, setting. None of this is stated anywhere. When I buy a YCH I'd love to get what I see , please don't change many things without even telling or at least sending a WIP? Also many artists think they have to match the style the ref has which I gave them. No I get it , they want to draw the character accurate. But I commission you because I want to see my character in your amazing style ^^"

people who, like others have said, dont pay attention to refs. ive had people leave out my fursonas (giant) ear puffs in his (giant) ears. i have it listed that they can be any size, any shape (star, puff, wool, etc) but i had someone i commissioned not draw them, and then when i asked if they could add them told me "oh i thought they were stylistic"........... STYLISTIC? you couldn't've asked me if they were supposed to be drawn, or read the ref where it says "these are not optional but you can stylize them however you want" in big text that's underlined? or people who mess up his design even still when he is Very Simple and i have different views OF the things people mess up most often,, im not asking you to scientifically dissect his reference but idk? maybe read it over a time or two? take in his design fully? i even started putting "his ear puffs are not optional" and "the dark is just on top of his foot" "for some reason everyone thinks his fingers are the same color as his hands but they Arent" on e v e r y commission i order, yet it still happens! i know its a case of being thoughtful of who you commission, and how well they can draw a design (good art =/= accurate design) but man! its like my man cant ever catch a break T___T

There's a thing I noticed repeatedly now. I said something related to it before but never got specific because I kinda didn't knew what really bothered me about it??

When I commission art of my humanoid characters, people almost always draw their eyes way too big and wide open. They don't draw like they usually draw their humans and make my characters look very uncanny and creepy. My ref sheets aren't hyper realistic and slightly toony because 100% realism is quite difficult for me to draw. But you'd think people know they don't have bigger toony eyes in reality. But every semi realism or realism artist I commission draws my characters eyes toony and everything else is realistic. And on top of that not a single artist who I had this issue with sends wips. So yes I'm going to ask for little adjustments after they finished the piece. I don't like sitting on a piece of art (which often wasn't even that cheap) and not enjoying it at all.

At first I thought well maybe my refs are just not something you should give realism artists. But I've had many situations before were people drew my characters normally, in  their usual style and they turned out amazing. So I guess it just depends on the artist I commission.

...when no one commissions you in several months...

Artists who don't keep track of the commissions they've taken. I'm sick to death of being scammed by people who "forgot" or are "so busy." Case 1... bought a commission in December. Reached out in May. Artist said it was done... but he can't/ won't send it to me. Still trying to get a resolution on that one while dealing with the other two: case 2, the artist had all sorts of excuses but now that I've opened a PayPal claim, they say they never received any money from me. How exactly did I open the claim then? Case 3, no contact after 5 months. Getting ready to take it to PayPal.

Case 2 is of course lying about not receiving anything, but I think 1 and 3 just blatantly forgot and thats somehow my fault. Keep track of your commissions, man, don't take them if you can't keep up on them.

As a buyer:

Lack of communication and ghosting. I think almost everyone in this thread has mentioned this so I won't elaborate much, but I hate that it's still such a big problem for so many people. Is it really that hard to be responsible and just send a quick message every once in a while to customers instead of leaving them hanging for months, worried that they're being scammed?

Lack of organization, mainly for things like when I see people post on their story "if I owe you a commission pls message me, I forgot who it was" I'm kinda like... Oof. You don't have to have a fancy excel sheet or whole Trello, but please have some sort of list or way to keep up with who you are working with. I understand everyone forgets things at some point, but when you're working with people's actual money, I don't feel like this level of forgetfulness is very acceptable.

People who already have a mile long queue and still take on more comms. Usually this results in disorganization, really long wait times, comms being rushed or forgotten, etc.

People who do tons of personal art while they still have a ton of comms to do. If you do a few comms, then do a piece of two of personal art to relax, then to back to working on comms, that's totally fine. But if my comm is sitting there with no progress for weeks while you've been posting 10 pieces of personal art, that's when it bothers me. If you don't feel up to doing comms for an extended period of time, then close or cancel them please.

When people don't have their prices listed publicly. I will not commission someone who doesn't have prices posted somewhere because I just feel too awkward DMing them about it in case it's more than what I can afford at the moment. Even if you just have base prices posted, like "headshots starting at $12, price may increase due to x y and z" that's fine! Because it gives me at least a general idea of whether or not I can afford before I message you.

As a seller:

When a client gives me a shaded ref sheet. Please don't, it makes it a lot harder to draw your character accurately without me bothering you a lot by asking if a certain color is a marking/different color or just shading.

>As someone who draws animals - it's a pet peeve when someone doesn't list the species/breed on the ref sheet or tell me what the animal is. Sometimes it's easy to tell, but other times it's not. I'm someone who likes to accurately draw a certain species, so if I can't tell what it is, it makes me really anxious. Because I'm also afraid to ask what it is in case it's taken as an insult to the artist (like "wow my art is so bad they can't even tell what species this is") and I don't want to possibly hurt someone like that ): but I also really don't want to accidentally draw someone's feline OC as a canine or something. We can eliminate all of this issue by just stating the species somewhere!

Also seconding the people who said it's annoying when the client never even acknowledges the final piece (or maybe puts it in their TH but never says anything to you, the artist). I don't expect anyone to be like WAAAAAH THIS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ART ON THE PLANET AND I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER OMGGG but like... please at least let me know you received the art or something lol

Sorry the formatting in my post is weird - I'm on mobile and it's difficult to do the spoiler code and whatnot with a small text box and a finicky phone.

As a buyer...

When you take the time to fill out and submit a form to an artist who’s advertised that they’re in despo need of coms... and they don’t even acknowledge your message. Weeks go by, not read, not responded to, not even a post about slots being full or closed.

Same with a brief message for inquiry about commissions (after spending a good twenty minutes scouring their media to try and find the information beforehand).

I just find it rude as hell to not even acknowledge a person who’s made an effort to politely reach out about buying a service you offer. (Or have mentioned offering on previous occasions).

Just... wtf
