The Digimon Thread

Posted 5 years, 1 month ago (Edited 4 years, 9 months ago) by Caine

Another fandom focused thread since I figured it's probably a series nostalgic enough to get people talking & I get the feeling there are people out there whose OC interest / character design hobby started from making their own digimon and whatnot!

You're free to talk about whatever honestly and talk with other people freely, but here are some stuff you can reply with if you need some sort of guideline for starters:

- How did you get into the series?

- Your favourite memories about it?

- Favourite anime/games?

- Favourite digimons?

- Did the series influence your art/character creation/characters in any way?

- Do you remember the early 00s when Digimon was a big mainstream thing? Any particular memories about that time if this applies to you?

And here are a few tiny rules to keep things nice:

  • This is not a thread where to discuss whether Digimon is better or worse than Pokemon or any other similar concept series! It's alright to have a preference but let's not bring other fandoms here, alright?
  • If you want to talk about spoilers, make sure to use the spoiler function or blacked out text!
  • Respect other people's opinions and avoid getting into arguments (and if you do, move it to DMs!)
  • Don't be a meanie
If things for whatever reason are starting to get heated up I'll give a public warning

I rewatched Adventure not too long ago! And man despite the obvious lack in the visuals department, the themes still hold up so well. It's surprisingly mature but also the reason why I love it so much. Huge stand out to me is Soras arc: a girl who wants to avoid everything girly, gets the Love crest and surprise! Her arc doesn't deal with boys, but with her feelinga towards her mother whom she just can't agree with. It's such a complicated and well written arc, especially considering this is a kids show. It's absolutely great writing, and Sora is just my favorite character period.

Adventure has such an honest, warm and loving writing, it's really hard to compare. It's a great show for children, and still great for adults.

Also the adventure movies are still my favorites to this day and I regularly re-watch them. Mamoru Hisoda has always been great

We also rewatched Tamers, or at least tried to. But man, the beginning is so dry, we had to take a break after a while. But Tamers is still the show where I like the writing of the partners and their relationships the most. It's a real treat honestly. Gotta go back to it!

Also re: games. God I hope the hackers memory on switch rumor is true. It's the only digimon game I haven't played. I want Betamon as my starter!!

fenitos I LOVED SORA'S ARC SO MUCH something I enjoyed about Adventure as a whole was the lack of romance like I know the movies etc expand to this but compared to for example Frontier (which I finished just a few days back) the focus was clearly on friendship with each character and there wasn't really that awkward romantic tension between the kids at least in a visible way and I appreciate in a kids' show!! Not because it'd be wrong but because there is a high chance it will come out as awkward and unnecessary like it did in Frontier

kokohearts Big mood I teared up several times while watching it despite 100% knowing what would happen next and what the outcome would be :')

Thanks to FB memories, apparently today marks the first day I finally sit through Digimon Adventures in Japanese dub, and I did that in 2013. Amazing. Fun fact, my first comment was "why does Yamato sounds masculine even in the Japanese dub when the Malay dub is really unfitting." (Yes the Malay dub gave Yamato a super feminine voice which is why I preferred the Indonesian dub miles better....lol....)

And to answer the "revisiting Digimon as I become older" question, I was basically 15 when I revisited Digimon properly without skipping any episodes and fully experience the original Japanese language (which isn't odd to me because again I'm grateful that the Malay/Indonesian dub is based off the JP source haha) but oh boy, it did shed me some light. It's really common to see shows within this genre to have powerful monsters and power of friendship!! and that isn't a bad thing at all but Digimon expanded more than those tropes and isn't afraid of going to the darker, realistic themes?? Maybe it could be the fact the kids anime genre is still new during that time so some contents or themes is less stricter back then but I do ???question at some point on how realistically painful the writing is; especially Digimon Tamers that emphasized on (Tamers spoiler)  Juri's parents divorcing issue and the loss of her dear friend, as if (Adventures spoilers) Yamato and Takeru's separation and Hikari's + Tailmon's mourning over Wizardmon wasn't enough. As others mentioned...it's sweet that Digimon aren't just mere monsters that exist for promotional reasons, they're like the only friends that these kids had despite little options and choices in life and this was when the concept of "isekai" or other world is for these children to escape to a different place that felt like a second home to them (which is a shame considering how isekai genres have turned now.) In short, I did think the story was really sad as I first watched it (but didn't give much thoughts into it), then the series got re-aired in 2009/2010 here and I decided to watch it in 2013...I realized why I loved Digimon for its story so much lol. Especially now that I've grew older and a lot, lots of stuff makes sense and just because they're kids, doesn't mean they can't face hardships.

Also if it's not obvious enough Digimon is one of my inspiration in writing so there's that. Hi.

Edit: Oh yeah I may keep mentioning Digimon here but obviously I've mostly basing off Adventures and some Tamers lol (though despite 02 is full of filler and comedic arc I can't forget Ken's backstory and that one episode near the ending where everyone had an "ideal dream" ft. their happier families and all :^) ). Maybe someday if I'm really that serious into the franchise I'll properly get into the rest of the anime continuity, haha.

P.S. Big agree on the Sora's arc part...I saw that during Tri people are arguing about how Sora didn't fit the Love crest (for shippy reasons) but the original series clearly said it was for her strong familial love?? Then again I adore that the crests arc mostly revolves around some of them doesn't seem the best for certain traits but the Digimons showed them otherwise :'D

P.P.S. Since I recently revived my dusty DS I've also started on Digimon Dawn. Hell yea. Wish I can actually play the Digimon Adventures PSP game though lol

Kogami wow I'm replying so late I'm sorry

I ended up watching the last two arcs in Japanese too! The Finnish dub also followed the Japanese one pretty faithfully and I was actually really impressed by the fact they even tried to go for the same voice pitch as the original seiyuu? I feel like I might have even said this but it just blows my mind because I never expected the second dubbing group went such an extra mile for a children's show?

And same I have watched seasons 1-3 and actually since the last message I also went through Frontier! It wasn't imo exactly the best but it was entertaining enough and I loved lordknightmon + I thought it was interesting how Patamon was referred as son-daughter by Bokomon & the whole "Bokomon and Neemon are the local gay uncles" were surprisingly cool for a show so old? I don't know how intentional the gay coding was but it seems for a lot of people who actually watched the show as a kid they consider them to be their first "soft" introduction to same gender parents

Caine

ethanol I remember them!! I never had any of my own because they were too expensive for my family's budged but I Really wanted the very specific gabumon one! They're actually releasing a 20th anniversary edition of those V-pets in English but since they seem to be US only I don't know much about them as an European who can't afford the shipping rip

02 KIDS ARE CONFIRMED FOR THE KIZUNA MOVIE AAAAAA

I'm a bit hopeful for this movie to give Adventures a perfect ending but I wonder if watching Tri is required... Hopefully it's better at least 😔

(Also I just knew that the Cyber Sleuth games are coming to PC? Obviously I can't get PS4/Switch so I'm probably making a Steam acc just for buying that alone-)

I'm honestly surprised I haven't posted in this thread yet hfghg I looooove Digimon so much, it's always been one of my fave franchises!

- How did you get into the series?

When I was a kid, my best friend was into Digimon and we watched a lot of 01 on TV at their house together!!!

- Your favourite memories about it?

Hmm, one of my fave memories for sure was introducing my mum to the franchise through Tamers!! She loves the season so much, and when me and some friends did some cosplays, my mum even joined us! (She was Guilmon!!!! My two friends were Renamon and Terriermon, and I was Impmon!!)

- Favourite anime/games?

TAMERS TAMERS TAMERS  T A M E R S ---- Just, everything about Tamers is so good. I adore the way the human+digimon relationships were written, the Digimon felt so much more like... Actual characters in Tamers than they did in 01+02 in my opinion, and they were written SO WELL. Especially Impmon. His character arc is so, so well done and he's one of my fave fictional characters ever.

I will always have a soft spot for Digimon World: Dusk & Dawn! Though my fave game nowadays is def Cyber Sleuth!

- Favourite digimons?

I HAVE... MANY FAVES but Unsurprisingly Impmon and Beelzemon (particularly Blast Mode!) are my faves :D I also adore the Guilmon, Renamon, Terriermon and Lopmon lines a lot. It's uhhh... Pretty obvious I have a BIT of a bias towards the Tamers' species lmao

Beyond those, though, Lunamon line, Gatomon line, Dorumon line, Kudamon line, Dobermon, Anubismon, GranDracmon, Unimon, and Indramon are all big faves of mine!!

- Did the series influence your art/character creation/characters in any way?

Yes!! Not so much art, but an old Pokemon OC I had was heavily inspired by Tamers' Renamon!!! And I know Impmon def influenced my.... Fave Character Type quite a lot so fdjfdjfdgj

also i have digimon ocs but i don't think that really counts for this question fhfdhdfhdfhg

- Do you remember the early 00s when Digimon was a big mainstream thing? Any particular memories about that time if this applies to you?

I remember watching Digimon on TV back in the day! When it actually like... Properly aired and everything. I'll always remember when I saw two particular episodes of Tamers on TV, totally out of context, but they completely ruined Tiny Me. Those episodes were uh, the Dobermon episode, and well. Gestures at Beelzemon. :') I had seen the final episode of Tamers prior to that and I remembered being confused about why Impmon apologized to Juri...... Aaaaand then I saw That Episode and well. I remember laying under the pull out couch and crying lmao

- Favourite digimons? Mailbirdramon, Valdurmon,  phoenixmon

- Did the series influence your art/character creation/characters in any way? I love the idea of fusion and digital evolution and I want to put something similar in myself series

- Do you remember the early 00s when Digimon was a big mainstream thing? Any particular memories about that time if this applies to you? I got into it much later sadly

OH BOY I AM SO HAPPY TO FIND THIS THREAD

pardon me while i go off on several tangents in a row!!

- How did you get into the series?

back in like. late 2013 my brother nd i were at my grandma's and wanted to watch pokemon so we looked it up on netflix and digimon came up. it looked interesting so!! we watched all three seasons over the span of roughly six months, as we went to my grandma's every weekend

and then back in january of this year, i saw an ad on youtube for it and.. remembered how much i loved it? so i rewatched the first two seasons and then watched tri for the first time. mind you i watched this all in the span of two weeks in february when i was horribly sick and absolutely losing my mind, so tri was... an experience, but i love it

ended up watching data squad and rewatching tamers later in the year (april-june), and im... desperately trying to find time + motivation to finish frontier, as well as appmon, both of which i adore so far!!

- Your favorite memories about it?

probably all the digifakes i created as a kid!! i still have the drawings! i made a complete evo line for each of my classmates (i'd just recently switched to a new school so it was a huge comfort for me). tbh those characters are what motivated me to keep drawing

gonna get a little personal here,, i had 2 very important characters back then that i made for myself, and they helped me a lot in my new school - i had no friends at all and it was very different from my previous school, so it was a lot to get used to, and those 2 characters really helped me a lot - id just pretend they were there with me at school, cheering me on and being there to comfort me if i was feeling lonely

- Favorite anime/games?

definitely 02, which i have recently realized is... very unpopular? ive always loved the concept of "these kids are supposed to save the world but they have to keep it a secret from their friends and family and also have to balance school along with it" so. that season was GREAT!! absolutely love daisuke. (also; ive only watched the first few episodes of frontier but i love it!!)

ooh and as for my favorite game, ive been playing hacker's memory a lot recently!! i love the storyline and just... everything about raising + evolving the digimon. i played links before it was shut down and it was fun but im glad to have a story-based game finally!!

- Favorite digimon?

this is HARD, man. gatomon was always my favorite as a kid (my old oc was inspired by her) but after rewatching it this year and getting more into the different lore and characters, ive really come to love angewomon, dorugamon, omegamon alter-s, ancientirismon - oh god there are TOO MANY

character-wise, blackwargreymon has got to be a fave. his character arc was (big heart eyes)

- Did the series influence your art/character creation/characters in any way?

YES YES YES yes 100%!!! as mentioned above i made digifakes for allllllll my classmates and i... never actually officially finished them all but it was a very fun project(?)!! id like to maybe revisit it sometime soon with all my new friends + design/art skills. on top of that, i now have... at least 30 digimon ocs, all of whom i love dearly, and theyre so much fun to draw and write about so. thats been a big motivator!!!

-  Do you remember the early 00s when Digimon was a big mainstream thing?  Any particular memories about that time if this applies to you?

nah i wasnt.. technically born yet :') (2003) i also got into it in like, 2013, way after it started
