The Digimon Thread

Posted 5 years, 1 month ago (Edited 4 years, 9 months ago) by Caine

Another fandom focused thread since I figured it's probably a series nostalgic enough to get people talking & I get the feeling there are people out there whose OC interest / character design hobby started from making their own digimon and whatnot!

You're free to talk about whatever honestly and talk with other people freely, but here are some stuff you can reply with if you need some sort of guideline for starters:

- How did you get into the series?

- Your favourite memories about it?

- Favourite anime/games?

- Favourite digimons?

- Did the series influence your art/character creation/characters in any way?

- Do you remember the early 00s when Digimon was a big mainstream thing? Any particular memories about that time if this applies to you?

And here are a few tiny rules to keep things nice:

  • This is not a thread where to discuss whether Digimon is better or worse than Pokemon or any other similar concept series! It's alright to have a preference but let's not bring other fandoms here, alright?
  • If you want to talk about spoilers, make sure to use the spoiler function or blacked out text!
  • Respect other people's opinions and avoid getting into arguments (and if you do, move it to DMs!)
  • Don't be a meanie
If things for whatever reason are starting to get heated up I'll give a public warning

Stupid fact: I watched the "newest" Digimon series for a bit which was Digimon Universe: App Monsters because the OPs were sang by Amatsuki and SymaG?? Its definitely one of my fav OPs next to the ones by Wada Kouji....Also a lot of people hated how "modern" and "more Youkai Watch" it is but I do think Digimons based off phone apps was very unique and one way to keep the series up to date with recent trend that kids now are glued to their phones? Prob just my thought but. Well. Though I do admit the plot have strayed a lot from the older Digimon series but thats just how kids anime have turned nowadays, tfw

(And I still have yet to watch Tri bc hfgggfgd yknow this fear of nostalgia being "ruined" especially how I'm seeing mixed reviews regarding it....Should I really do that. Maybe one day.)

Oh yeah I'm seeing Digimon DS games being mentioned here....maybe I should try them since my DS still works (but I'll need to get a new charger first haha) I miss these monsters...

Edit: Also true at how countries and age influence a lot on how Digimon influence or exist in someone's childhood... I was one of the ones that grew up with Malaysian/Indonesian dub retaining the Japanese source like names and songs so I really never seen the 4kids ver and get the jokes related to it lol

Caine

Kogami I haven't seen the App Monsters but I do like the idea at the very least? I mean if you watch Adventure for example it's SO rooted to the 90s and how computers were back then that I think it's only appropriate a series leaning so heavily on this stuff goes with the times and updates to applications and phone stuff since that's now what most people have.

Speaking of apps I not-so-secretly wish Digimon would have also jumped on the pokemon go thing like smt did and made their own phone app I can play while running around :')

I haven't heard much good about Tri sadly like I have heard enough to know I won't be enjoying it myself but I guess sometimes it be like that!! I'm really happy for those who do enjoy it!!

Edit: SAME also it's such a big Culture Shock for me to play Cyber Sleuth bc it uses the official "English" names and I'm like....... who is this myotismon you're talking about.... gatomon who..........

did I also mentioned that Ken/Digimon Kaiser is my mom's best boy because she watched 02 together with me during the 2010 re-air

THAT PALMON DUB IS GOING TO HAUNT ME

On the topic of bad dubs here is the Agapio Racing Team dub of Digimon Adventure. The dubbing group changed to Werne once the third story arc started and they were legit good but this one is just. oh man.

Also Ken making that Digimon is such a good characterization because this is like... such a kid thing to do? The writers really grasped the soul of this age group like he's only 11 a lot of kids at that age make their own characters by just combining the ones they know and it's so good I love it

Pftl

Ken just out here making OCs in the Digital World

Cliodna

I'm not really in the "fandom" but I grew up with this show so. :D

- How did you get into the series?

I watched it every morning before going to school.

- Your favourite memories about it?

♪Digimon, digital monsters digimonsomethingsomething♪

- Favourite anime/games?

First series. I saw the second series and part of the third as well, but the first one was always my favorite.

- Favourite digimons?

I really liked tentomon and his evolutions. Furthermore I think I had an adolescent crush on both angemon and myotismon. Not that I really knew anything about crushes back then, I just remember sitting in front of the tv and thinking about how COOL they were.

- Did the series influence your art/character creation/characters in any way?

Character creation? No. Art? Yes! I drew a lot of Digimon - in fact back then I drew up stories into notebooks, one scene per every page, and recount them to any adult who bothered to listen. I drew the whole first season up until jokermons appearance! I also remember for a fact that this proto-comic I made was the very first instance when I depicted a human face in semi-profile. I was around 8-10 and was trying to fix up a face drawn in profile, but then my felt pen slipped. I was somehow really happy with the result and couldn't replicate the effect again until I was 12? Also, although not fanart I think that this thing from 2005 was my very first attempt at emulating anime style. I even remember my thought process with it "Anime style = harsh shading, big eyes, small nose and mouth with a pointy chin JUST LIKE DIGIMON!"

-  Do you remember the early 00s when Digimon was a big mainstream thing?  Any particular memories about that time if this applies to you?

I remember that era, because that was when I was into Digimon. Pokemon was not a big "thing" in my country - I'd seen a few of the movies and there was a campaign where potato chips would have collectable thingies with pokemon pictures on them but I'd never seen the actual anime as we didn't have cable back then (and I didn't speak english anyhow). However Digimon was on TV all the time, dubbed and all, everyone knew it. :D

Funny enough but just last week I salvaged some files I had laying around my external memory, including a bunch of my, ugh, let's call it...extremely early digital art.  Here's some Digimon fanart from when I was around...9 or 10 I think? One's based on a scene from the series, the other from the movie and I was very proud of them back in the days. :D

Caine

Cliodna Don't worry I'm not in the fandom either!! Also oh gosh your old drawings are adorable?? I love seeing art people made as kids ;_; < 3

ALSO since you're Estonian and we're basically neighbours: did you guys use the Japanese original as the dub's basis or the American version? Since the main difference seems to be evolution songs used since Finns got brave heart but I know some other countries used the American one with the digirap?? Also it's really cool it was more popular than Pokemon there because in Finland it was the other way around with Digimon being the one that was harder to access since TV4 wasn't a thing in all houses (but you didnt need to pay for it?? it was something related to how your TV was connected idk)

Caine

We got the digimon rap and I loved it. Estonian dubs were...incredibly low effort. The dubbing was generally just one single guy (or gal) doing all the voices and it makes sense that they'd have used the english version because I have a feeling that with their evident budget they probably didn't have any japanese-speakers on board. It wasn't very well dubbed but I didn't mind (off-topic but I learnt my first english from badly dubbed cartoons actually. In particular I recall how I learnt the word "no" from Swan Princess II. There was this scene where the antagonist flips out and screams at the sky and in the dub it was like "NOOOOOO - ei - OOOOOOO!!!1". The dubs, even for animated feature films, were BAD in the 90's and early 2000's.  (out-of-topic note #2 that might be of interest to you: in the 90's we seem to have used the finnish dub as a basis for Beauty and the Beast))

Okay, sorry, back on topic.

I think Pokemon was sort of becoming a thing, because of the potato-chip-bag collectables, and the VHS movies, and it being on on cable channels. Now that I think about it, I remember catching a few episodes of Pokemon on Fox Kids while at my aunts place actually. For some odd reason her Fox Kids was in german for most of the time so I understood it even less than I normally would've and never got into it. It does seem to be a really odd cultural divide since Pokemon appears to have been all the rage in pretty much everywhere in the rest of the world.

And there was I, making paper cutouts of tentomon and daydreaming about how much I wanted to be friends with Ken from S2.

Caine

Cliodna Honestly when I was a kid I LOVED the digimon rap but I only heard it in the movie so it was really a rare treat for me. We initially started out with a pretty awful dubbing group too lmao but thank god so many adults of the children watching the show complained about the god awful dub that the channel owning the rights to show digimon actually forced the dubbing group to stop and they hired a way better team (who actually seem to try to be as close of a match to the original which really surprised me?). We definitely had similar sort of dubbing nonsense here too though especially in the 90s and a lot of the shows are badly dubbed over mostly German dubs lol

IT'S SO INTERESTING THOUGH I would have never expected to hear a country favors Digimon over Pokemon, I suppose whichever actually accessible channels end up buying the programs really makes a huge difference

Caine

Alcor I'm currently playing Story Cyber Sleuth, I'm on chapter 14!! Spent like 40 hours on the first 10 chapters because I Really wanted Lucemon and I wanted them as early as possible but most guides were useless so I ended up taking my sweet time haha but at least I now have several megas AND Lucemon child form. It's really a shame this game is no longer available digitally and must be purchased physically + DLCs are all taken down because a lot of my friends wanted to get the game when they saw me praising it but you couldn't DL a demo or anything for a test run :(

Also..... I'm so happy the game has canon gay characters who don't even make it Vague like they just Are gay and nobody can deny it. Can't believe digimon said gay rights
