Want to suggest a question? Feel free to DM me!

I figured that since the "weekly show me a character" thread has been alive and running for a couple of years now, I could give a shot at doing similar with development questions! I'll post a new prompt each week both on this starter thread and the comment section! Feel free to post answers weekly or combine previous ones into one post - whichever feels the best for you.

oooo this is a good thread!!

  • writing it all down/explaining it is definitely the hardest part for me... if that counts. i can have the story/personality/etc. of a character figured out very in-depth but i have such a hard time conveying it through writing/words! only like four of my characters have "complete" profiles here for this reason... whoops
  • finding the right balance between simplicity and needed complexity/consistency in my world. i.e. i don't really want to design and draw full sets of armor on the dragons in my story—their designs are already complex enough as-is—but they're fighting a war... i think they need them LOL
  • reusing the same traits in my designs... over and over again......... what, this is only my 16th character with curved ram horns in the same story, why do you ask?
  • i'm not the worst with names in general, but naming my characters after things that don't exist in their world and getting way too attached to those names is going to come back to bite me in the butt eventually.

Week 30: Which part of character creation do you tend to struggle with the most?

Drawing finished references......... It's so easy to doodle but very hard for me to focus on making clean references, which is why most of my characters nowadays only have a sketch ref for their fullbodies etc. I have more OCs than I'm physically (and mentally) capable of producing finished art for so I have had to make some compromises

salida

I always put off drawing more art of a new character, so their profiles have one or two doodles or bust shots or whatever but no full bodies. Or all i have for them is the one fullbody ref but no other drawings. I really like making characters but im unfortunately too lazy to draw em sometimes... TT__TT

Week 30: Which part of character creation do you tend to struggle with the most?

all ..of it except the visual design. or i have a tendency to have a lot of thoughts and ideas for a character, but i never take the time to just write it down so they end up having blank profiles for the longest time until i hit a stride and then i make them super elaborate lol. also names

Week 31: (Pick a character) What are they afraid of? How do they handle their fears?
How do they respond to other people's fears (friends, strangers etc)?

Violette Goatbert VincentVanGoat

Her fear is regaining her mortality. She doesn't know what that'd do to her, heart wise as that is what killed her, and that if she did come back, she'd just die and not have her spirit bound this time. But also because she's already banked on her now eternal time around. Losing that would devastate her.

Depends on the fear, if it's ghosts she just doesn't really grasp that, but a lot of common ones she does her best to be mindful and to help out if she can! Has no real sort of any type of deal when it comes to varying people, she kinda has the same mindset for everyone's fears that she knows. But hey being a ghost it has to be tough to be told you are scary and you wanna show that not all ghosts are.

Hopper Greene PicklePantry

Have you ever had irrational fears? Like, "that ceiling fan is moving way too fast" or "what if the floor breaks under me"? I have a lot of those, and I funnel them all into Hopper KEKEKEK. He's a paranoid guy who's constantly afraid that the smallest thing will have a butterfly effect that leads to the worst case scenarios. The problem with him is that he doesn't really handle these fears, he runs away and hides until he's comfortable again, often running to his guards of his dad to feel safe.
The person he loves gave him the red mask he's always seen with, and whenever he puts it on he feels like an entirely new person. It's like when you're writing your character and get to see through their eyes for a bit, but for him it's amplified. He becomes his complete opposite: loud, proud, and, most importantly, courageous. But that's only with his mask on. Otherwise he's his normal terrified self.
When other people are scared around him it gets contagious, and his own fears roll off theirs until he's completely overwhelmed. When he has his mask on, he laughs off their fears and assures them it's all right.

Lucas lycanvvolf

Lucas is terrified of large bodies of water. i think it's called thalassophobia, he began having the fear when he was nearldrowned by another eklon that despised him a lot. even then he had always had weird things against pools, ponds, etc., even before that incident.
Lucas doesn't like to share his fears, as he's one of those types who would want to seem like they're tough and all even though they are scared of a few things, if that makes sense.

he handles his fear by simply not approaching water, except if he needs it to shower, drink, etc. for right now, no one really knows about his fear and he doesn't really know any way to help cope with it. i don't even know if Lucas knows how to swim, either.

Lucas believes that having fears is like weakness, and tries to encourage people that it's "Not that big of a deal, just go with it." like for example, another character of mine, Axel, has a fear of heights. when he would have to try and help pry Lucas out of a situation that involves Axel having to climb up a pole, Lucas tries to calm him into not being scared as he would promise to catch him if he did fall.

Jonathan Linden Caine

Week 31: (Pick a character) What are they afraid of? How do they handle their fears?

Jonathan is afraid of strange dogs, in particular those that aren't on a leash! He tends to freeze when he sees strange dogs and often tends to try to hide behind someone (which is hilarious considering many of his friends are much shorter than he is), or alternatively just grabs a friend by their shoulder to just... feel more grounded I guess?

He usually relies on his friends a lot & making sure he's not making any sudden moves. He's slowly but surely getting himself more comfortable with strange dogs because he loves animals but it's still a long road to complete immunity to that fear.

How do they respond to other people's fears (friends, strangers etc)?

He always wants to do his best at making others feel comfortable, so he often asks if there is anything he can do to help. Especially with friends he's super eager and invested in helping, often dropping whatever he's currently doing to help a friend in need. With strangers he tends to be a little wary mainly due to the whole stranger danger thing, but generally he can't just watch and do nothing if he sees someone in need. Since he's pretty good at dealing with his own emotions it also helps him to respond to the feelings of other without letting someone else's fear consume him, at least most of the time.

But yeah he's emotionally intelligent enough to respond to other peoples' fears by helping instead of covering or avoiding them

Sigmund Vernon Kirbygal

Sigmund says he has a fear of romance but it's more of a fear or getting too close to someone emotionally.  He's had a rough experience with a relationship once in his past and he never wanted to experience something like that again so he's closed himself off to the thought or being in a relationship. It extends to casual relationships too ;; The way he handles it is to just keep everyone at an arms length. He does tend to adapt to situations pretty well and can talk casually with a lot of different people, but no one truly knows him, and he prefers it that way. ;; Not even his client, who's the closest person to him since they work together everyday for many hours at a time and are friends since they've been with each other a long time.

How he'd respond to others fears, I guess he could try to comfort the other person, but he wouldn't try too hard to make everything better. He does tend to give pretty good advice, even if it's something he didn't experience personally but might have seen secondhand experience from something else (this ironically extends to some relationship advice lol)

Caine

Week 32: (Pick a character) How does your character feel about change?
Do they welcome with open arms, or are they afraid of it?

Kattenkvvaad

did it for two of my characters because why not :3c

Taro - for them it really depends on the kind of change, especially since they are of an element that isn't quite welcomed with open arms. They are probably somewhat afraid of change, espeically if the change isn't what it seems at first, but at the same time they're working hard to make a change that will affect their entire world.

Autumn - Autumn is somewhat of an ever-changing being themself, and they often welcome any kind of change (both good and bad) with open arms. It's fascinating and it's refreshing to see what something new or different can do.
