Dorky References In Character Design

Posted 6 years, 11 months ago (Edited 5 years, 2 months ago) by Lonestarcelt

Is there anything more fun than creating new characters? Probably not...but there are certainly things that we enjoy outside of that creative process. From movies we love to watch, songs we listen to on repeat, books we can go back to over and over, and games we could play for hours if not days on end, and as a result. Sometimes, intentionally or not. We inject a bit of our other loves into the creative process. This thread is for that very purpose. Was your character's name a reference to someone from your favorite book? Was their fashion sense lifted from a show you watched? Did you get their hairstyle from an anime you saw ages ago or did some aspect of their past come about from listening to that song that you just love? Why not post the connections here? All references from big to small. From details that may seem super obvious to you to the minor minutia that someone only as in-depth in whatever lore as you would even start to recognize? It doesn't matter. If you have something that helped influence your character why not share it here and let everyone know, not only something that went into your creative process, but also maybe introduce people to something new.

Examples:
Your character's pet is named after something from a video game
Your character wears a bit of jewelry taken from some part of a short story
Your character has a phone charm of some video game faction

Please note: This is just a thread for references. Sure these references could inform large parts of a character's design or world but there's a difference between that and say a fan character for whatever bit of media they were made for. Nothing against fan characters it is just not the goal of this thread. However, if you have a fan character who has a reference to some other bit of media? Say a wizard for the Harry Potter universe who loves a particular band from the 90s enough to have some merch on them to a Homestuck fantroll with some obscure video game reference? They are more than welcome here. In essence.

X: A fan character on their own
✔: A fan character with a reference in their design to some outside media.

Batari VincentVanGoat

That scarf and her being a monitor lizard are callbacks to Kamen Rider Amazon. Before I figured out her name she also had a placeholder name of Amazon for that very reason.

I forget what other things I already posted here, cause yeah there's a lot, so for now just this info, but yeah good to see this thread occasionally make a comeback~

Tetsuo Saitō Ayeaka

Hah... most of my characters ARE just giant dorks, but this guy's prolly got the best examples. Sure I've drawn his boyfriend with a Labramon keychain once or twice, buuuut...

It's a bit of trivia that Tetsuo here used to have a tattoo of Ultraman on his calf before he lost his original legs.

So I often draw him in fandom-y shirts when he's in plain clothes. Like this picture here, where he's wearing this Ultraman shirt from Vapor95.

★Satsu Pinkapop

The idea of the mask was actually inspired by the anime TenSura (That time I got reincarnated as a slime)

Sneaky Golden-Bloomy

His eyes are based on Sans's.

No kidding.

Auggie ShakedownDreams

Auggie is inspired by the old Toon show Bonkers! Specifically the main character, Bonkers D. Bobcat

Jay spunkzoid

jay's face is.... just solid snake from starbomb's "the simple plot of metal gear solid". specifically this frame.

Dakota (GP) milkywaytrain

promare jacket. the sleeves are burnish fire colors. he has canonically watched promare.

also, in his RPGverse AU thing, he uh. hm. all of his abilities are video game/anime references. osu, just shapes and beats, pokemon (glitches, specifically), and gurren lagann. he has a drill. he can do the giga drill break

[perseus] Jovian

In the games Digital: A Love Story and Analogue: A Hate Story, AIs are represented with an * in front of their names.  I wanted to reference that initially and make their name *Perseus, but I thought that might be stepping on toes a bit too much (since that'd be Lore Reasons for both stories instead of just a reference)....so I changed it to brackets instead.  But still the reference is there in the sense that AIs have their names represented in a special way!

Dennis Warmack Kanonite

Dennis is from Wisconsin cus that is where Red Letter Media are based.

Also, his real last name is "Bogdanovich", a reference to the Bogdanoff meme.

🐥 || duckie borksnorks

Daffodil wears alot of clothes similar to bunnies and cinamoroll, cinamoroll is so cute >//

Mari kuroguroo

Mari was inspired by Eleanor from the book Eleanor & Park (such a great book omg).

Bintang Swissy

Bintang's fastjack outfit is a parody of Gojek which is pretty much an uber-like service. He's pretty much centered around my country's mundane but significant culture haha

Cosandk

I have a few, thought i had more buut ig not :0

- Zena , her redesign was loosely based on Zecora from MLP. Something about a darker palette for a zebra really inspired me when i was redoin my girl.

- Azazel , not sure if he really counts, but hes a DAD based on my favorite bird; Gold Finches. They remind me of sitting with my grandma in her camper watching them feed at the bird feeders ♥

- Raven , her full name is based on the Edgar Allen Poe poem Nevermore, which is also my favorite poem!

(SMALL WARNING FOR NEXT CHARACTER - He may be a lil too flashy for some people! dont click if sudden colors and glitchy patterns arent ok for you!)

- Sensory Overload , while he is one i recently bought from someone, he was made durin the height of Unus Annus characters and he's based on the Sensory Overload episode!

Adriel Tudor Jayp1x

This man is named after Krobus from Stardew Valley, and Jasper's name is a reference to The Dolls of New Albion
