THE SILENT CITY OF CORVATIA

f. 500 BI (Before Ivras)

Northwest of what we now know as Mead, deep within the mires and flatlands that surround Namrast lies a relatively small cluster of ruined stone buildings, walls and the vegetation that slowly pulls it deeper into the earth. It is relatively easy to miss, given its size and surrounding vegetation, but for those that know where to look, they may find themselves in the centre of a small ruined city square.

Of course, it looks nothing like a city today. And cities back then were not as expansive as we know them now.

Today, many animals call this place home, a great variety of cold blooded snakes and lizards find peace here, as well as a multitude of frogs given its proximity to the wetlands. Perhaps the most unintentionally eerie inhabitants are the large flock of ravens that roost here. They make feasts of all the small creatures and often are found roosting in one of the only large semi intact buildings left – what appears to be an old stone church

Many of the stone structures are covered in ivy and thick moss and lichens. The ground is covered in thick tough grasses and what some would say is the strangest occurrence, small clusters of poppies, appearing as a small network of islands that flare out from the centre of the ruins.

Little is known about the city and much of the knowledge of this place is twisted in various myths and legends. Several Irvatian Authors tried their hand at uncovering the myths and stories of this place – a starting point for this research was often found at the foot of a statue – a proud looking crow headed mage who was clearly of importance.

The statue of the mage in the centre is often thought to be the King of Corvatia – many hundreds of years before the kingdom of Ivras was established. In these days, there were many wild kingdoms peppered all across the peninsula. From what can be strung together, the King was an incredibly skilled mage, capable of peering or obtaining his magic from the heavens. The specificity of this is not entirely known, although Keita Archijd seems to have some idea.

So the tale goes, the King grew in immense power and so to of the modern day, become an unbridled beast that ravaged the city and surrounding lands. However, the damage to Corvatias peoples was not physical in nature, as such….

Many call these ruins, the ruins of The Silent City. Named for the silence that fell the day that the king ascended to full magical power. The crushing power of the deep dark depths of space was so fearful, so depressing and crushing that the peoples of the city fell to their knees in a trance, so saddened and crushed by a great many sadness. The king remained hovering over the city, controlling his peoples for a span of thirty days. The peoples were unable to move, or gain an kind of consciousness and so to, when the day came that his corrupted form was defeated, his people had died from starvation and never moved again.

The city remained silent until it was no more. The land reclaimed it and all never dared step foot on such an unhallowed and deeply sad place. Slowly over the hundreds of years, the peoples bodies were absorbed into the earth and from their resting places, deep red poppies grew.
