gold guide
What is gold?
Gold is the currency that allows you to purchase items character upgrades, additional Primary Character slots, familiars, and more from Anathema’s Shop!
Your Gold balance is tracked in Anathema's Bank by our mods, and is updated when you purchase items from the shop or report your art in the Bank bulletin. All art, writing, and roleplay must focus on accepted Anathema characters.
How to earn gold
- Submitting Roleplay, Art, and Writing: All Anathema-related roleplay, art, or literature submissions to the World earn Gold. To get rewards, upload art and literature to your character's Anathema tab with your Gold total (and how you calculated the gold total) at the top of your blurb or caption, and claim your gold on the Bank Bulletin.
- Completing Prompts: Head to the Writing and Art Prompts page and check out the available prompts, their requirements, and their rewards. To get rewards, complete the guidelines for a specific prompt, upload it to your character's Anathema tab, and claim your gold at the Bank Bulletin.
- Group Events: Group events such as Hunts will happen periodically, and offer limited-time prompts for special rewards! Keep an eye on the World Bulletins for information about any events that may be happening now!
gold rewards
You earn Gold for all roleplay, writing, and art submitted to Anathema. Staff will add Gold to the Bank for you, but it is a member’s responsibility to calculate how much Gold each submission earns, using the guide below.
Gold counts should be placed at the top of your submission description, so that Anathema staff can find them quickly. Please include a breakdown of how you got that total, and link the characters featured in your piece. For example:
+2 Fullbody +2 Color +2 Other Character +1 Accessory = 7 Gold
All relevant Anathema characters should be tagged in the image or literature piece. Characters who are not currently in the World will not earn Gold.
WIPs and incomplete work may not be submitted for Gold if you intend to also upload a finished piece.
effort values
In order to include as much creative content as possible, and to reward players who try new things, Gold is rewarded differently for Quick pieces and Effort pieces. This allows otherwise-discarded work to be submitted for a little Gold, and incentivizes pushing yourself creatively for an extra reward!
Who determines whether a piece should be quick or high effort? Why, you do! No one is better equipped to determine how much effort you spent on a piece than you. The effort values are awarded based on the honor system, and staff may step in if this is getting abused -- if every piece is being awarded for exceptional Effort, then it’s not exceptional anymore!
💸 Quick should be used if a piece is done quickly or just for fun, is a discarded WIP, or is otherwise not as rendered as your normal work. Quick submission earns half the total points of a regular submission.
- Examples of Quick roleplay: One-liner rapidfire RP, headcanon swapping in a discord chat.
- Examples of Quick art: Sketches, thumbnails, doodles, silly comics.
- Examples of Quick writing: Unedited notes/lists related to character development, character memes (like the DeviantArt journal quiz variety).
💎 Effort Bonus should be used if a piece goes far above and beyond your usual. This should be applied when exploring a new medium or technique, or otherwise really pushing yourself. Effort bonus gives double the total points as a regular submission.
- Examples of Effort roleplay: Polished editing, significant character development, significant exploration of character’s inner nature.
- Examples of Effort art: Experimental style or medium, extreme rendering, technical complexity, high detail.
- Examples of Effort writing: Complete narrative, experimental style, complete structure, use of new literary devices.
🎨 Scoring Visual Art
- Fullbody (+2): Head, neck, barrel, and hindquarters must be entirely visible. Legs may be partial, but some portion of all limbs should be visible. Applied once per character or familiar.
- Bust (+1): Head and neck must be entirely visible. Applied once per character or familiar.
- Color (+1 Bust, +2 Full): May be monochrome, but must represent all of a character’s markings.
- Shading (+1 Bust, +2 Full): Must be drawn/painted, no simple gradients.
- Ornamental Background (+1 uncolored, +2 colored): Background elements such as frames, florals, graphic elements and other decorations that don't create a full scene or don't fill a canvas. Gradients and premade patterns do not apply.
- Complete Background (+2 uncolored, +4 colored, +6 fully shaded/lit): A background that fills the canvas and places a character in a scene.
- Environmental Background (+4 uncolored, +6 colored, +8 fully shaded/lit): A complex scene with background, middle ground, and foreground that fills the canvas, using the background as part of the composition. Must contain multiple elements and visible perspective.
- Comic pages: Each panel should be scored as an individual image, then the whole page totaled together.
additional bonuses
- Other Character (+1 Bust +2 Full): If another player’s character is drawn, double the Fullbody or Partial Body points for that character! Applies to gifts, trades, commissions, or just cameo appearances!
- Accessories (+1): For small accessories, jewelry, or simple props. Can be applied for complex antlers, etc as well. Can be applied once per character in an image.
- Outfit (+2 uncolored, +3 colored): For complex outfits and large props; should only be applied to a fullbody. Can be applied once per character in an image.
- Atmosphere (+1): For extra effort to place a scene’s characters firmly rooted in the background using a strong light source, visible interaction with the background, etc. Can be applied once per image. Image must have a Complete or Environmental background. Not applicable to Quick art.
- Wings (+1 uncolored, +2 colored): For a pair of fully visible (unfurled) wings, because they’re a pain! Can be applied once per pair of wings.
- Bonkers Design (+1): You know the ones. For fully rendering one of those absolutely ridiculously detailed character features that doesn't fall under wings, accessories, etc.
- Magic Use (+1): An image depicts a Mage player character using their magic abilities.
- World-Specific (+1): The scene directly engages with Anathema’s lore, or recent world events. This does NOT apply unless events, npcs, or world locations are actually depicted in the image; "floating" fullbodies and headshots do not receive this bonus, even if they are drawn for event prompts.
collaborations
In collaborations between two people, both artists receive the total Gold reward for the piece.
In collaborations between a small group (3-4 artists), every participant receives half of the total points.
In large group collaborations (i.e. where lots of people supply a fullbody to be placed on a single background), every participant gets points for their individual contribution, as well as any Additional Bonuses that apply to the piece.
Gift Art Bonus does not apply to characters owned by any artists involved in a collab! It can only applied to characters owned by members not involved in creating the piece.
Photo-manipulations, Photobashing, Tracing, and Stock Photo Usage
Photo-manipulations and photobashes are welcome in Anathema, and may be used to respond to prompts and events. Photos used in manips must be obviously edited and removed from their original background. They must clearly resemble the character they are portraying, and be more than “cut and paste”.
Anathema also allows tracing of stock photos, without a Gold penalty.
Stock photos must be used for all photomanipulation and tracing. If you trace a photo or use it in a manip, the piece’s description should include links to all specific images used. You are responsible for determining whether you have license to use a particular image, but feel free to tag Apel in the group Discord if you have questions about stock photo usage.
animation and video
For complex animation sequences, every new individual drawing (not necessarily every frame) is scored individually according to visual art gold guidelines. An animation is worth the total of all unique still drawings required to create it. If your animation has synched audio that you created, or other elements of your creation that aren't accounted for by this method of scoring, send staff a message via ModMail and we will assist you wi th scoring those other elements!
If an image is given a simple animation, such as blinking, floating, etc, that does not require more than one drawing, a +1 Simple Animation bonus can be applied.
craft and sculpture
For crafts, sculptures, figures, plushies, and other tangible works that are not 2D drawings/paintings, we use a scoring system of 5 Gold per hour spent creating the piece, plus bonuses (other character, wings, etc). If you are unsure about your scoring, as always please feel free to send staff a message via ModMail, and we are happy to assist you! 💖
📜 Scoring Literature and Poetry
Use this guide to determine how much Gold each writing piece you submit should be rewarded. You are responsible for providing the word count of your writing. Literature should be attached to your character's Anathema tab.
base gold count
All writing is given a "starting" Gold count of 1 Gold for every 100 words. Milestone bonuses and Additional bonuses are added to this base count.
- 100 words = 1 gold
Milestone bonuses
Writing large volumes will provide additional bonuses to be added to your base gold count! These bonuses are applied to a final word count, and added once per piece. Milestones are only applied to single author literature and literature collaborations, not to RP threads.
Literature will earn an additional +2 Gold for every 500 words, and +1 for every 1000 words, Use the table below to quickly determine the bonus for word count milestones.
Total Length | Milestone Bonus |
500 | + 2 |
1000 | + 5 |
1500 | + 7 |
2000 | + 10 |
2500 | + 12 |
3000 | + 15 |
3500 | + 17 |
4000 | + 20 |
4500 | + 22 |
Additional bonuses
These optional bonuses are added to the Gold total after base gold and Milestones.
- Other Character (+1): Another player’s character is mentioned in a meaningful way. The character does not have to be physically present in the scene for this bonus to apply.
- Magic Use (+1): A character or NPC's magic is described or utilized in a meaningful way.
- World-Specific (+1): The scene directly engages with Anathema’s lore, or recent group events.
- Familiar (+1): Your character’s familiar is present in the scene, or meaningfully discussed.
- Perspective Change (+1): Many writers have a preferred perspective, such as first person or third person. If you’ve taken a chance and switched it up when writing this piece, give yourself a bonus.
- Evocative (+2): A stylistic bonus for eliciting emotions in your writing, not just in your character, but in the language of the piece. For example, using vocabulary, rhythm, mood, symbolism, and other literary devices intentionally to give your readers a “vibe” that extends beyond a simple description of your character’s current feelings.
- Character Development (+2): Your character reaches an epiphany, event horizon, or life milestone during this piece that will affect them, their worldview, and/or their circumstances permanently moving forward. Can also apply to flashbacks of events that were important to your character’s development.
- Expansion of Lore (+2): Your piece takes advantage of Anathema’s anything-goes sandbox lore and builds uniquely on the culture of Ivras. Includes exploring player-made factions and locations, as well as establishing cultural practices, superstitions, folklore, etc that are not explicitly laid out in site rules or events.
- Character Arc Bonus (+1): This piece is a continuation of an ongoing plotline for your character rather than a one-shot that is disconnected from any other narrative threads. This bonus can be applied to all pieces that can be connected narratively to another lit or RP submission until the logical end of the associated arc.
- Backstory Bonus (+1): This piece examines your character’s past in some way. For example, a flashback, memory, or reveal.
- Atmosphere (+2): A stylistic bonus for describing your environment and grounding your character in the World of Anathema. For example, a rich descriptive paragraph of the interior or landscape your character is in during a lit submission, or descriptive imagery consistently and intentionally used in small increments throughout the piece. Not applied to roleplay threads.
- Dialogue (+2): Applied when a single author writes dialogue between two or more characters or NPCs. Not applied to roleplay threads.
literature collaboration
Anathema accepts literature collaborations, which are defined as one piece of writing with one consistent perspective, written and edited by multiple authors. If a piece is divided up by author/character/POV rather than one consistent, contained piece, then it qualifies as a roleplay thread.
🎭 Scoring Roleplay Threads
Use this guide to determine how much Gold each roleplay thread you submit should be rewarded. Completed roleplay threads should be uploaded to Toyhouse as Literature pieces, with all involved characters tagged. You are responsible for providing the word count of each post, and of your thread total. All writers in a thread must be Anathema members playing characters accepted into Anathema in order to claim gold.
base gold count
All RP is given a "starting" Gold count of 1 Gold for every 100 words. All of your own post word counts in one thread should be added together to determine your base gold.
- 100 words = 1 gold
Additional bonuses
These bonuses, unless stated otherwise, apply once per RP thread, not once per post. They are added to the base gold count.
- Completed Post (+1): You did it. You wrote an RP post. Take another Gold! Does not apply to Quick RP. Applied once per individual post that is least 100 words long.
- Other Character (+1): Another player’s character is mentioned in a meaningful way. The character cannot be present/participating in the thread. Can be applied once per thread.
- Magic Use (+1): Your mage's magic abilities are used or described in a meaningful way.
- World-Specific (+1): The scene directly engages with Anathema’s lore, or recent game events. Can be applied once per thread.
- Familiar (+1): Your character’s familiar is present in the scene, or meaningfully discussed. Can be applied once per familiar per thread.
For example, a flashback, memory, or reveal.
anathema forum
If you use Anathema’s official forum for a roleplay thread, you do not have to upload the roleplay as a Literature submission. When your thread is finished, make a final post listing the end word counts and gold breakdown for all players, and link directly to the thread when claiming your gold.
special circumstances
Application Art and Literature
The base Gold reward for a completed application (words and fullbody) is 10 Gold. You don't need to do anything special to claim it, it will be added to your Bank balance when your character is accepted!
If you choose not to draw your application art, you may: have someone else draw it, use a dollmaker, or color a base/template. If you did not draw your fullbody, then your Application reward is 5 gold.
For every 100 words over word count minimum, you earn an additional 1 Gold. For more information on filling out your application, click here.
“Human AU” Art, Roleplay, and Literature
You may decide to play, write, or draw your character as a human version of themself. Anathema characters don’t shapeshift into human form, but imagining them in an alternate universe as a human can be a lot of fun!
Human art should still be grounded in the Anathema setting, and should focus only on the human versions of characters: for example, you should not have a human version of your character interacting with the bovine version of your friend’s character.
The same scoring system applies to human art as animal art. You may respond to any Anathema prompt, meme, or event with human art or writing, so long as every character involved is also written or drawn as a human.
Collaboration Art and Literature
You may score collaborations between players with multiple media (combining visual art and writing to depict a scene, for example) as one piece, if they are uploaded together. Our gallery forum is a helpful place to upload text and images (or a series of images) together as one cohesive piece. Additional bonuses may be applied to mixed-media collaborations.
