character guide
Anathema Character Overview
Anathema is a game for hoofed characters. The main character species are equines, cervines, bovines, suids, and camelids. Other hoofed species are available for creation with the purchase of items from our shop using gold earned by playing Anathema!
There are two character types on Anathema: Mages and non-mages.
Mages are characters with magical abilities and fantastic appearances. Mages collect stat points to grow their powers, and are in danger of becoming monsters if they accumulate too much Corruption. Your first character must be a mage. Additional mages require the purchase of a Summoning Circle from the shop.
Non-mages are the non-magical residents of Anathema's world. Non-mages have no magical abilities, do not have stats, and are more "natural" in appearance. Players are welcome to create as many non-mages as they like!
For advanced players, powerful items from the Ley Lodge shop allow for special character types.

Outlander Species
Height: 3hh - 20hh
To acquire these rare, non-native species, you must purchase the Toy Boat item from the Item Shop. Outlander species are any hoofed ungulate other than the five native to Ivras. Large species (such as elephants, rhinoceros, etc,) must be scaled down in size, with a maximum height of 20hh.
Example species include: giraffe, okapi, tapir, elephants, rhinoceros, hippopotamus.
Non-hoofed ungulates such as hyraxes, manatees, and cetaceans are not permitted.
Your character’s appearance can mix and match any traits of any real-world animals within the family of species you choose. For example, a Bovine character could have the build of a bison, the horns of a goat, the head of a yak and the wool of a sheep. Go wild!
"hh" (hands) is a type of unit usually used for measuring horses. It is equivalent to 4 inches or about 10 cm.
Aging
Characters in the world of Anathema age at a human rate, and have an average lifespan of 90 years. However, for some mages, this can be much longer (check the Mage Guide tab for info!).
Aging can be sped up or slowed down with a ritual at Fortune's Shrine.
New Mages must be no younger than 10 years, unless born in-game as the child of player characters. Non-mages can be any age.
Gender & Reproduction
Thanks to the power of Ivratian mage-physicians, any two characters are capable of having children if they so desire, regardless of sex or species. Characters from different species (i.e. a Bovine and a Suid) can reproduce, but do not create hybrids. Each child will be one of the parents' species, decided at random. A ritual at Grace's Shrine can help you customize your baby!
The gestation period for all species in Anathema is 9 in-game months, though this can be shortened with a ritual at Fortune's Shrine. If you want your character(s) to have a baby, send a ModMail to staff in our Discord server with your request and a link to each parent's profile!
All genders are present in the world of Anathema. Magical medical practice has made physical transition possible for transgender individuals who wish it.
Daily Life
Taxonomy
Real world breeds and species, as well as categories like “unicorn” or “pegasus” have no meaning in Anathema. for example, a “thoroughbred unicorn” would simply be known as an Equine.
Surnames
Family names are common in Ivras, but not required. There is an endless variety of reasons a family would choose a name, or a character would choose to use (or not use) their family's name.
Telekinesis / Carrying items
All characters, mage or not, are equipped with limited telekinesis that allows them to lift small objects for brief periods of time. This is often just strong enough to put on their own accessories, write with a quill, or place items in a bag to be carried. Without a Handmade Idol, the average character could not use telekinesis to wield a weapon or carry something heavy. The use of specialized harnesses, bags, and other worn equipment is widespread.
Species Relations
The different species have long peacefully shared the kingdom of Ivras. There is no cultural bias that values one species over another, and public spaces welcome all citizens equally. While some smaller, more homogenous settlements may be constructed with a particular species in mind, most urban centers have accommodations for Ivratians of all species and sizes. Especially in the capital city of Faline, advances in engineering and architecture have allowed for seamlessly incorporated walkways, steps, and even shop counters of varying sizes so that the city is navigable for all.
What about livestock and leather? That's fucked up
Domestic fowl such as hens, ducks, and pheasants are often kept for their eggs, which are used in baking and the preparation of other goods such as adhesives, soaps, and conditioners. Sometimes, reptiles and other wildlife are raised or hunted for their hides; materials such as alligator leather are widely sought for their durability. Many Bovine and Camelid citizens that are naturally wool-producing shear and spin their own wool for the creation of textiles and woven goods.
For information on owning animals, check out the Familiars & Pets page!
Ranks / Occupations
choosing an occupation
There is no list of ranks / jobs to choose from when creating your character. Select a role for them based on the story you want to tell, and how they fit into the world.
It is possible to create a character without a single “job”, but if that’s the case, how do they provide for themself? Tell your character’s story!
No job is off-limits for characters, but keep in mind that positions where your character is the only one (e.g. the leader of the King’s guard) may need to be modified during the application process.
leader / royalty positions
In order to eliminate “limited” roles and make all jobs available for everyone, Anathema's monarchs are all NPCs, not controlled by any one player or staff member. Royals aren’t at the center of Anathema’s story, and to avoid activity checks or competition between players, we have opted to keep these characters out of play as much as possible.
However, players are welcome to make characters who are of noble birth. You can create monarchs from distant lands, or members of royal families from Ivras and its neighboring countries, so long as your character is not a monarch or child of a monarch. You can create characters with a variety of relationships to the NPC leaders. If you have questions about making a character close to an NPC, tag staff in the Discord server!
monster hunters
When monsters threaten Ivras, Mages are often the only ones equipped to stop them. Because of this (as well as the fame and wealth associated with a successful hunt), many Mages have chosen monster hunting as a way of life.
Throughout history, the most celebrated monster hunters were those selected to serve the kingdom, knighted to become Mage Protectors of the realm under the king. Traditionally all Mage Protectors were supplied by the Order, presented to the crown as the Order's best and brightest battle mages, but an increased volume of monster attacks in recent years necessitated the inclusion of mages from outside the Order. A very recent declaration from the king welcomed Wild and Hidden mages to join Ivras's revered Mage Protectors. Mage Protectors are venerated across the continent and are under the command of the King, paid a regular stipend to report wherever they are needed.
However, not all monster hunters are official Mage Protectors. Many Mages traverse Ivras chasing rumors of abominations and offering their services as mercenaries outside the supervision of the crown. Sanctioned and unsactioned alike, all monster hunters are under constant pressure to improve their skills to stay alive, as monsters seem to only be growing stronger.
creating a mage
Mages are characters who are born with magical abilities. Mages accumulate stat points to grow their magic, and can be Corrupted into monsters.
Your first Anathema character must be a mage. After that, Mage slots must be unlocked via the shop. New Mages must be no younger than 10 years, unless born in-game as the child of player characters.
If you purchase a Rite of Grace from the shop and complete a Ritual at Grace's Shrine, you may convert an existing Mage character into a non-Mage by removing their magic abilities, or vice versa. This process is permanent.
Mages have the ability to create Familiars, mystical companions created by their magic.
magic abilities
Your Mage's magical talents are completely for you to design. As you play your character, complete prompts, and participate in game events, your character's magic will grow with them and ultimately decide their fate. Read the Magic and Corruption guide for information on how to select a magic ability that scales dynamically as your Mage collects stat points, and how to determine your character's starting stats.
Magic abilities are measured with three stats: Power, the raw strength of an ability, Discipline, a mage's control and variety of abilities, and Cost, the side effects of magic on the user. Every mage will receive a bonus to one of these stats based on their background.
Items from the shop, such as scroll and amulets can add to your character's abilities.
mages and corruption
As you play Anathema, your characters will be presented with choices in the form of story prompts and events. Sometimes, the decisions they make will give them a point of Corruption. When a character accumulates 10 Corruption points, they transform irrevocably into a monster, and are hunted by other mages. The Magic and Corruption page has more details on the Corruption system, and the Hunt Guide describes the monster hunt process.
At its core, Corruption is a malicious desire to accumulate power, and a selfish hunger for magical strength. Corruption can happen to any mage, regardless of power, and no specific kind of magic (even "darker" powers such as necromancy, blood magic, etc) is linked to Corruption over any other. How Corruption affects your mage is up to you! Corruption may show itself on your character physically (you do not need to purchase a design change to incorporate the effects of your character's Corruption), in your character's personality, or in how their magic manifests itself.
mage character designs
Like all Anathema characters, Mages must be Bovine, Camelid, Cervine, Equine, or Suid. However, the touch of magic in their blood can take strange forms, and even transform a Mage’s appearance over time. While these bizarre traits can make for unique beauty, more outlandish appearances can inspire alarm and hostility in the rest of society.
Your character’s appearance can mix and match any traits of any real-world animals within the family of species you choose. For example, an Equine can have the ears of a donkey, the stripes of a zebra, and the build of a draft horse.
Items such as outfits, armor, tools, and accessories do not have to be purchased, and may be included on your character's reference. Weapons are available only to characters that possess a Handmade Idol.

*Free Shapeshifting is limited to being between two “forms” of the same design, e.g. the land and water forms of a hippocampus, disappearing wings, color shift, etc. Anything more complex requires your character to possess shapeshifting as part of their magic ability.
Mage designs are also allowed to change over time, e.g. have a spreading visual representation of their corruption, or magic effects that become more dramatic as a mage grows more powerful.
Human Designs
If you choose to have a human AU design for your mage, the humanoid design may include fantasy elements from their animal design. Horns, wings, tails, fantasy skin colors and body parts (hooves, claws, pointy ears, etc) and more are permitted for mages only.
mage backgrounds
Instead of choosing a rank or faction to fit your character into, you will select one of three backgrounds for your Mage character. Backgrounds describe your character's early relationship to their magic or magical training, and every background gives a boost to a different stat. Since backgrounds describe your character's history, there is no way to change backgrounds once your character has been accepted.
Like anything else in Anathema, the criteria for each background aren't absolute, so please choose whichever one you believe makes the most sense for your character and the story you want to tell!
order mages
These mages were enrolled in the kingdom’s academy of magic (or another formal institution in another land), and learned control from an early age. They receive a +2 bonus to Discipline, and are most likely to have earned rank and prestige in Ivras society.
Order mages are the most common in Ivras, as children across the kingdom are usually sent to the Order when their magical ability is revealed. Order Mages from Ivras typically lived at Namarast for some period of time to receive schooling, and were often taken from their home and family in order to train there. The Order's purpose is to train mages who suppress their magic except in ways that can be utilized (some would say exploited) by the crown, and to produce magical researchers or savvy politicans capable of spreading Ivras's influence as ambassadors and advisors across the continent.
Your Order background mage does not have to live at Namarast today, nor do they have to have ties to the Order in their current life.
wild mages
Though magical education outside of the Order is outlawed, many in Ivras still find a way. Wild Mages did not participate in the Order, and developed their powers elsewhere. They receive a +2 bonus to Power, but are treated with suspicion and fear, and are often overlooked for positions of influence.
Wild mages are any trained mage that did not attend the Order or similar foreign institution for training. They may have been trained privately, with a secluded sect of mages, a trusted mentor, or as part of a Wild Clan in the south of the kingdom. Some Wild Mages may have developed their abilities alone, but have made a concerted effort to grow their powers.
Mages with a wild background can still join the Order later in life, and, thanks to a recent proclamation from the king, are able to become Mage Protectors without endorsement from the Order.
hidden mages
These mages have foregone training, or have not discovered their powers. Their magic comes at a -1 reduced Cost, and they are often not regarded as mages at all, because their abilities have been concealed.
Hidden Mages are those that did not "grow up" as Mages, either in an effort to avoid detection by the Order or simply because they didn't know about their own magic. These mages likely made no organized effort to grow their powers when they first discovered them, or have yet to discover them at all!
Mages with a Hidden background can still join the Order as adults, and become Mage Protectors if they so choose.
mages and immortality
Magic can have powerful effects on the body of a mage. Through brushes with magic, it is possible for a mage to outlive their non-mage peers, by decades or centuries. If you would like to create a mage with a long life, or a mage unaffected by aging, there are three ways to achieve this:
- Devote your magic to it: If you character's magic ability is solely focused on agelessness, immortality, healing oneself, etc, you do not need any special items to create an immortal character. This option does not require gold nor any Corruption.
- Complete a Pact of Fortune: By purchasing a Pact of Fortune from the shop and completing the associated ritual, you can turn your mage into an immortal. This requires 100 Gold and one art, writing, or RP piece worth at least 5 gold to tell your character's story. It also gives your character +5 Corruption.
- Have at leat 15 Stat Points: If your character has at least 15 points in Discipline and Power combined, the magic coursing through them is enough to keep them vital, if you so choose. These stat points can be earned with prompts, or purchased from the shop. This method does not require Corruption.
Immortality/agelessness can only be acquired through one of these three methods. Immortality can NOT be given to a character through a Cost, or as a "side effect" of their magic, unless they have also completed a Pact of Fortune or have accumulated 15 stat points.
magical anatomy
If you are looking to create a mage with unusual bodily function or capability (e.g. made of stone, undead, a living doll, etc), this is totally acceptable in Anathema! We have only two general rules:
- All characters must have been born in Anathema's world as one of Anathema's allowed species. Even if your character looks like a living statue now, they must have been born somewhere in Anathema's universe, to parents who belonged to Anathema's accepted species. This means your character cannot be an object that came to life, or a deity transported here from another universe.
- Your character's magic must somehow account for their unnatural bodily function. If your mage's body can do something non-magical bodies can't, then your character's magic ability and unusual anatomy should be linked; you can create this link with the character's main magic ability, or through a Cost that affects their body.
creating a non-mage
Non-Mages do not have magical abilities. They do not accumulate stat points and are not in danger of being Corrupted.
Once your first Mage is accepted, you are allowed as many non-Mage characters as you wish!
If you purchase a Rite of Grace from the shop and complete a Ritual at Grace's Shrine, you may convert an existing Mage character into a non-Mage by removing their magic abilities, or vice versa. This process is permanent.
You may create non-mages who were formerly mages, and somehow lost their magic. You do not need an a Rite of Grace to do so, but these characters must still follow all non-mage rules and design guidelines.
non-mage character designs
Like all Anathema characters, non-Mage characters must be Bovine, Camelid, Cervine, Equine, or Suid, but they have not been touched by magic in the same way as Mages and have a more "natural" appearance. Non-mages are limited to natural-looking coats (with a little wiggle room), and traits found in their counterpart species on Earth.

Human Designs
If you choose to have a human AU design for your non-mage, the humanoid design must appear entirely human. Horns, wings, tails, fantasy skin colors and body parts (hooves, claws, pointy ears, etc) and more are permitted for mages only.
Instructions
creating a new character
New Mage characters require the purchase of a Summoning Circle item from the item shop. However, players are allowed an unlimited number of non-mage characters!
creating your character profile
- Navigate to your character's Toyhou.se profile. Go to Manage Character > Tabs > Add Tab and create a new "Full Tab" or "Split Tab" (your choice!). Title the tab “Anathema”. This tab will be where you attach all of your character's Anathema-related art, literature and links!
- Edit your new tab. In the tab's description, copy/paste the profile text from the application template. Use this template for Mages, and this template for non-Mages. We recommend copy/pasting the code with "WSIWYG" turned off.
- Complete the text profile for your character! To see an example of a completed profile, click here. Don't forget to include your word counts for Gold rewards! If your profile mentions common triggers or mature content, please include appropriate content warnings!
- Using an image editing program, place a clear fullbody reference image of your character on the appropriate app background. Use these templates for Mages, and this template for non-Mages.
- Upload the resulting reference image to your character's Anathema tab. Also use this image as the tab's avatar, without cropping.
submitting your character to Anathema
- If you aren't already a member, go to the Anathema World, and click "Request Membership" under the World Functions menu.
- Next, open the discord server and send a DM to the bot named ModMail. This will start a confidential conversation between you and staff! In your message, include your Toyhouse username and a link to your completed character profile. If applicable, share who told you about Anathema; the person who referred you will get a Gold reward!
- Once a staff member has reviewed your character, you will receive a message saying that you have either been accepted or need to make some edits to your character app.
- Once your app is accepted, a staff member will send you a request to add your character to the World. Hit "Accept" on this request when you receive it, and you're all done!
application gold rewards
The base Gold reward for a completed application (words and fullbody) is 10 Gold. You don't need to do anything special to claim it, it will be added to your Bank balance when your character is accepted!
If you choose not to draw your application art, you may: have someone else draw it, use a dollmaker, or color a base/template. If you did not draw your fullbody, then your Application reward is 5 gold.
For every 100 words over word count minimum, you earn an additional 1 Gold! For more information on Gold, click here.
Referral Bonus
If you refer a friend to Anathema, ask them to mention you when submitting their first character through Modmail on our Discord server! If they do, both you and the new member will receive 50 Gold! 🤑 💰
retiring a character
There are two ways to retire a character and remove them from Anathema. One allows you to refund all items purchased for a character, but requires a piece of art or writing to wrap up your character's story. The other allows for the quick removal of a character from the game, but does not reimburse you for any purchases.
to get a refund:
When you follow these instructions, your character's story in Anathema is considered ended. Your character will be moved to a 'Past Characters' folder in the Anathema gallery, where they can remain on display for as long as you like.
Your Bank account will be refunded for all items purchased for the retired character, including Summoning Circle. Prizes, such as those won in raffles and contests, will not be refunded.
- Complete an art or writing piece (or combination of pieces) worth at least 4 gold, describing the end of your character's story. Your character's actual death can be set in the future if you are completely finished with the character but don't want them to die at their current age.
- DM Modmail in the Anathema discord server with your request to have the character officially killed, a link to your work, and a link to the character profile.
- Staff will move the character to the past characters folder and refund your gold.
If you want to turn a currently living character into a resurrected/undead character (i.e. you want the character to "die" but not retire from the game) you do not have to follow this process. Ask staff how best to make your vision happen.
If you choose to later resurrect a character that has been retired through this process, you may do so. This will require them to become a mage if they were not one, and will require a Summoning Circle. You will have to resubmit the character as if they were new, and they will restart without any of their previous items.
to remove a character quickly:
If you wish to remove a character from the game temporarily, or stop playing them without killing them off, you are free to do so at any time. Characters can be removed from the world or hidden for your comfort if you wish to exclude them from game activities. Simply removing a character from the world will not allow for your items to be refunded, however.
if you put a character/design up for sale:
If you put an accepted Anathema character/design up for sale or trade, for example with a price visible in the name, we reserve the right to remove them from the World and the character gallery. If you end up keeping the character and want to start playing them again, let us know and we will re-invite them to the World!
leaving anathema
If you wish to leave Anathema, we'll be sorry to see you go! There is no specific procedure to follow, just please let staff know via Modmail or by PMing the staff Toyhouse account anathema_rpg so that we can delete your Bank account.
Members who leave are welcome to return later (unless banned), but will have to start over with 0 characters and 0 gold.
But remember: Anathema has no activity requirements! If you only plan to be absent for a while or are low on time for roleplay, there is no need to remove your account.
