Ask a question to the user above you!

Posted 5 years, 11 months ago (Edited 5 months, 14 days ago) by hedgemaze

We have lots of threads to ask questions to or about characters, but what about the users? In the vein of the Say something to the TH user above you! thread and the I want to see a TH user who... thread (and serving basically as a non-anonymous CuriousCat), this is a thread to help you get to know your fellow TH users better by asking the person above you a question. In return, the person below you will pose a question to you. After you're asked a question, edit your post with your answer!

If you're uncomfortable or don't want to answer the question you were given for any reason, just say so and leave a fun fact about yourself so the game still serves its purpose. If a question is truly problematic, message me with any concerns.

Rules:

  • Don't ask questions that are very personal or could be uncomfortable, and bear in mind that many TH users are minors, so while I encourage you to look at the profile of the user above you and ask about something mentioned if you like (like their pets, their hobbies, or their current project), please don't ask very personal questions like exactly where someone lives.
  • Try to ask something fun or interesting, but it's fine if you don't know the person above you at all-- getting to know each other better is the point of this thread! It's fine to ask something general like what their hobbies are, who their favorite fictional character is, how they came up with their username, which of their own characters is their favorite, or how they found ToyHouse.
  • Of course, it's great if you ask something more specific, too! If you know they have a lot of fandom characters, you might ask how they got into that fandom, or if they have a unique art style, you might ask how they developed it!
  • There's another thread for specific questions about characters, and another for worlds, but you can ask general/broader questions about a person's creations here, like how long they've been working on their story, or what inspires or influences them. I'm not going to keep writing examples, but you get the idea. Just use common sense and try to get to know your fellow TH users better!
  • You can ask multiple questions in your comment if you want to, but only one is fine, too. This can be as in-depth or as casual as you like.
  • Please ping the person above you so you make sure that they see your question! If you're not sure how to do this, you simply type @THEIRUSERNAME, and they will be notified! This will not work if you edit the ping into your comment later (like if you wanted to claim and then edit your question in); you must put it in when you first submit the comment.
  • You are NOT ALLOWED to skip anyone in this thread. If you cannot see the post above you because the poster or you have blocked each other, wait for another person to comment before replying to the thread. Feel free to bump the thread to encourage others to participate!
  • Wait at least a couple of posts before going again.
  • Edit your original comment with your answer to keep this clear; please DO NOT add new comments to the thread just to answer someone's question. This gets confusing. Take it to private messages if you want to have an ongoing conversation.
  • You can bump the thread as often as you like; I don't mind.
  • Be nice and have fun!   Please don't be rude if someone asks you a question you've already answered before! If that happens, you may link your previous response if you don't want to go over it again, but I recommend adding something new to say about the topic, if you can!
  • Want to play the game in reverse? Answer a question from the user above!

The first person can either ask me something or just claim a spot!

Edit: my answer

"Hedgemaze Expo" is the name of the main characters' band in my comic! I've been using either HedgemazeExpo or Hedgemaze as a username ever since, which is to say since 2003! Most people just call me Hej for short now.

The name itself doesn't mean much of anything, other than that I liked both words and liked the sort of paradoxical nature of an exposition dedicated to huge structures that can't be moved (what do they exhibit, photos? bush samples? tiny mazes?). In terms of the comic, it's just supposed to be a unique, kind of awkward, and silly band name, because in-story, it's an inside joke between my characters Jill and Amber.

this is probably going to be a long answer because it really depends on the character overall as well as the art style and quality of the art. if all these three combined appeal to me, I usually like any design. with exception being low contrast designs. (e.g. super light pastel, you can barely see the design) as well as neon-only that clash.

some more specific examples:

color combos I like and that go well together. I'm also a huge sucker for yellow/orange und combo with blue/aqua + either white or black/darkgrey. As well as black/dark grey in combo with high intensity colors. I also really dig galactic color schemes but it needs to be of quality. especially in this area many designs don't appeal to me due to the galactic effects not being drawn well. (awful brush or color choices) but IF done right, count me in 🤤

stylish but comfy human designs that aren't too fantasy heavy, complex and uncomfortable looking. And that have the right touch and uniqueness to them.

if animals, they should wear at least something. fully unclothed anthros are not really that interesting to me. one exception being reptiles such as lizards or dragons. I prefer them without or little clothing but a great scale design instead (or when consisting for some unique, shadow, slime, fire etc). I also love wingless dragons A LOT. (by that I'm not referring to eastern dragons)

ferals. ehh hard. ferals aren't really my cup of tea. unless it's a specific concept. a companion, pet or shape shifter. but pure ferals (e.g. dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits) are overall uninterested to me no matter the design. the same applies to simple shape designs. I do like creepy critters and creatures, but here it also depends. I don't like most of it.

style-wise I don't dig most popular stuff. a very specific type/style of stylized semi realism that works for the character at the same time is a 10/10. but it's quite rare for me to find exactly this that I could enjoy. I do have a 'love' favorite folder that includes some of my favorite characters from others. I think that shows my taste quite well :)

What kind of designs do you prefer in characters?

V I don't mind! I don't quite remember how did I get into Splatoon, but I do remember watching Caitlin Koi's music videos and looking at fan art of Off the Hook, which really caught my attention; and I got into Animal Crossing during the release of New Horizons, you know how popular it was. My favourite villagers have got to be Hazel & Filbert, I have them both in my dead island, and I love them both very much.

capn_oz

^ FILBERT?!  holy moly, he was one of my original villagers in new leaf.. i miss him

I have two questions if thats ok! TvT
how did you get into or discover splatoon and animal crossing? I know callie is your favorite idol (same yipee) but im also wondering whos your favorite character/villagers in animal crossing?

hallo! tbh, i dont really have a specific process or techniques... but when i come up with them, i always have this thing in my mind where i wonder if this or that was a character.. like "what if a nutcracker was some evil tyrant" or "what if some cloud is a pop star with 4 adopted children". where these ideas come from?? they come from various things, from everyday objects, the words i hear every day, my surroundings, things i love or something i saw randomly one day and was like "what if they were a character..". and if the idea doesnt work as well as i thought, i always imagine it working for some different character! "detective octopus? lets do detective lizard instead. the octopus can be some traveler". honestly i really dont truly know how i come up with these, i probably daydream or imagine way too much, they just randomly pop up in my head

for inspirations they are all inspired by wayyy tooo many different things, but i guess in general they are all inspired by littlebigplanet. i have always admired how distinctive and fun the characters are from the games!! leonardo da vinci is literally in the game, A DAD WITH A LITERAL CLOCK AS HIS BODY? FRIDA KAHLO??!?! and an inventor with a matchbox for a head.. theyre all so cool i always strive to my character designs as cool as them

honestly one thing im sure is that i just enjoy my characters, their designs were not always how they exactly looked now, but their designs changed and grew alongside me x)
sorry if the english is bad or i sound ridiculous ^__^''

endvred

Mmmhh, you have a very particular profile picture... The background of the profile code from the 2000s... The name is not new to me... So, why did you name yourself after the psycho-type Pokémon of the same name?

vv

The image of the dragon is a classic, and it is the first aspect that fascinates me about the noble reptiles. Long, tapered, with four or more pairs of wings, or fused to the front legs, completely without wings or legs but with only wings, and so on. Not to mention the snout, thin and elegant, with bright scales, which shine in the sun, or in the rain, or in the red of the magma.

But beyond that, Dragons have always fascinated me because they are considered monsters by many, even from fairy tales of the past, and intrigued by these gossips, I started to look at what these dragons were like... And something immediately clicked in me. I loved any character that was a dragon and work that portrayed one. I had a great desire to see them.

I immediately loved the wings, the different shapes of the legs and tail, their language (roars, telepathy, guttural calls), their brutality in defending the cubs and/or the partner, their celebrations, the different species, even the 'greed towards treasures (which could be translated as being territorial with the partner). Also... A few years ago, after I started feeling a tail, wings, and hind legs, I discovered that I was an Otherkin, a person with a non-human soul.

I have a great bond with Dragons, so much so that every time I see a film I feel free and spread my wings to simulate movement.

To answer the bonus question, an old friend told me about Toyhouse a few years ago, about how useful it was for characters and particular for codes. I was immediately interested, so they got me a code and here I am. Unfortunately I have the writer's curse, and every day I have a new idea for a story and I get to know my characters better and better. So… Toyhouse has been a blessing to me.

And then I have fun compiling the codes 👀

krak7en

Death_Rose_Mayes oooo, dragon lover!! what aspects about dragons do you genuinely love the most (it doesn't have to be just the appearance it can be literally anything) and why?

also a more general bonus question thing im usually curious about with other th users, what lead you to discover toyhouse and encouraged you to join? how did you get in?
