Ask a question to the user above you!

Posted 6 years, 30 days ago (Edited 6 months, 19 days ago) by hedgemaze

We have lots of threads to ask questions to or about characters, but what about the users? In the vein of the Say something to the TH user above you! thread and the I want to see a TH user who... thread (and serving basically as a non-anonymous CuriousCat), this is a thread to help you get to know your fellow TH users better by asking the person above you a question. In return, the person below you will pose a question to you. After you're asked a question, edit your post with your answer!

If you're uncomfortable or don't want to answer the question you were given for any reason, just say so and leave a fun fact about yourself so the game still serves its purpose. If a question is truly problematic, message me with any concerns.

Rules:

  • Don't ask questions that are very personal or could be uncomfortable, and bear in mind that many TH users are minors, so while I encourage you to look at the profile of the user above you and ask about something mentioned if you like (like their pets, their hobbies, or their current project), please don't ask very personal questions like exactly where someone lives.
  • Try to ask something fun or interesting, but it's fine if you don't know the person above you at all-- getting to know each other better is the point of this thread! It's fine to ask something general like what their hobbies are, who their favorite fictional character is, how they came up with their username, which of their own characters is their favorite, or how they found ToyHouse.
  • Of course, it's great if you ask something more specific, too! If you know they have a lot of fandom characters, you might ask how they got into that fandom, or if they have a unique art style, you might ask how they developed it!
  • There's another thread for specific questions about characters, and another for worlds, but you can ask general/broader questions about a person's creations here, like how long they've been working on their story, or what inspires or influences them. I'm not going to keep writing examples, but you get the idea. Just use common sense and try to get to know your fellow TH users better!
  • You can ask multiple questions in your comment if you want to, but only one is fine, too. This can be as in-depth or as casual as you like.
  • Please ping the person above you so you make sure that they see your question! If you're not sure how to do this, you simply type @THEIRUSERNAME, and they will be notified! This will not work if you edit the ping into your comment later (like if you wanted to claim and then edit your question in); you must put it in when you first submit the comment.
  • You are NOT ALLOWED to skip anyone in this thread. If you cannot see the post above you because the poster or you have blocked each other, wait for another person to comment before replying to the thread. Feel free to bump the thread to encourage others to participate!
  • Wait at least a couple of posts before going again.
  • Edit your original comment with your answer to keep this clear; please DO NOT add new comments to the thread just to answer someone's question. This gets confusing. Take it to private messages if you want to have an ongoing conversation.
  • You can bump the thread as often as you like; I don't mind.
  • Be nice and have fun!   Please don't be rude if someone asks you a question you've already answered before! If that happens, you may link your previous response if you don't want to go over it again, but I recommend adding something new to say about the topic, if you can!
  • Want to play the game in reverse? Answer a question from the user above!

The first person can either ask me something or just claim a spot!

Edit: my answer

"Hedgemaze Expo" is the name of the main characters' band in my comic! I've been using either HedgemazeExpo or Hedgemaze as a username ever since, which is to say since 2003! Most people just call me Hej for short now.

The name itself doesn't mean much of anything, other than that I liked both words and liked the sort of paradoxical nature of an exposition dedicated to huge structures that can't be moved (what do they exhibit, photos? bush samples? tiny mazes?). In terms of the comic, it's just supposed to be a unique, kind of awkward, and silly band name, because in-story, it's an inside joke between my characters Jill and Amber.

(DUDE YOU HAVE NO CLUE WHAT YOU SIGNED UP FOR WARRIORS WAS MY CHILDHOOD)

I've been reading Warriors since I was about 9 (probably not the most appropriate but, oh well!). I found the series when I was online and saw a cute video with lots of cats in the thumbnail, which I clicked. And thus little Rose was scarred from seeing cats tear each other's insides out. Jokes aside, the video was p gory. I was (and still am, a lot less now tho) a huge fan of cats, and I always loved being mature for my age, so I decided to check out more videos. Learned it was a book series, read the whole thing- that was released anyways- in like a month or two. A year or so later, I tried drawing for the first time, posted it on Scratch, and started my journey to becoming a furry- I mean what.

The warriors community, from what I saw, was pretty kind and accepting! I posted my art, it didn't get much attention but when someone noticed it, they were always really nice to my (horrible) drawings of my edgy warrior cats.

As mentioned, I mostly drew my edgy warriors ocs (They were rlly edgy. Maggotheart, Brokenheart, Meltedheart, Boneshade, Shadoweyes etc.) and watched maps the community created. I watched a ton of theory videos about it too, that was where I learned to be extremely critical of every detail of everything I enjoy until I'm not allowed to like it because it's 'bad' (heck yeah I over-analyze   ). I also wrote a little bit, but it was really bad, as to be expected, and nobody ever saw it but me.

YO THE BEST CATS WERE MAPLESHADE AND JAYFEATHER, I'M SORRY I DON'T MAKE THE RULES.

kafkaesque

DewDropsOnRoses - I noticed that you used to be a member of the Warriors community but since have moved onto other fandoms (which is such a mood lmao). out of curiosity, what got you into your community in the first place, and what were your experiences in there like? what type of content did you mainly invest yourself in (art, animations, etc.), both as a viewer and as a creator?

but most importantly... which cat was your favorite...

Are there any classical lit books that you have read that you would not recommend to others? And what books would you recommend?

god that's actually a hard question because I usually like the classics that I read, or at least appreciate why they're considered significant in the first place. I also think book judgments are inherently subjective, so I don't like claiming that my opinions are an objective evaluation of the book(s) in question, but... Ayn Rand's Anthem always rubbed me the wrong way?? the philosophy endorsed in the book is essentially individualism taken to the extreme, which is... frankly something I disagree with. (feel free to search up Objectivism, Rand's philosophy, if you're curious or want more information.) the fact that it reminds me of a teenage dystopian novel probably doesn't help either, but that's probably more of my reading preferences seeping through than actual grievances that I have with the work. it thus has the "distinguished" feature of being the only classic I've actually disliked reading; the others I can at least tolerate, but this? yea no.

as for books that I'd recommend, it depends a LOT on people's personal tastes tbh, since classics are a surprisingly vast category. I often have difficulty giving book-related advice to people who don't specify their tastes because of the number of books that fall under the label, for if they expected me to just give a list of old books written before the 20th century, then... they'd be sorely disappointed. I mainly tend to read 20th-century works myself, although I've read and enjoyed a few 19th-century works too; as a result, the list below will be overwhelmingly composed from those two eras. said list is also just a bunch of books that have really stuck with me over the years, in no particular order lmao:

1984 by George Orwell, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett, Beloved by Toni Morrison, The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose, The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? by Edward Albee, Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare, Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes*, The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner

* - Flowers for Algernon is technically considered too simple to be considered a major-league classic, but I still recommend it since I've seen it in the classics section before + it's a good read if you don't mind a tearjerker.

If you were a pokemon gym leader, what type team would you have?

I'd clearly have a ghost-type team by far, since that's my favorite type lmao- although iirc, gym leaders can have multiple teams with varying difficulty depending on the level of their challengers, so that's what I'll use when listing the exact teams since I actually don't know where I'd lie on the gym leader ladder:

early (around like levels 15-25 iirc): Drifloon, Misdreavus, Litwick

middle (~levels 30-40): Drifblim, Misdreavus, Litwick, Sableye

late (~levels 45 and up): Drifblim, Mismagius, Chandelure, Sableye (+ Froslass and Aegislash in higher-level rematches)

What sparked your interest in monsters? I love them too, and it's always interesting to know why other people do :D You can also elaborate on your favorite type of monster, and even monster-related media if you want!

__

YES!! I love RPing so much, I've done it since the beginning of time

what are some of your favorite things you've done in rp?

There are a lot!! But I'd have to say there was this one event I organized in a DA RP group and I made myself cry at the end- The power of friendship and stuff, it was really nice! I love the things that come out of different people collaborating on a story, it's my favorite part :D This event in particular had action and puzzle solving, so I can totally say I love that sort of thing. I like to think I make a cool DM even if it's pencil&paper

who is your favorite character to use?

I don't know if I have just the one character I prefer to use, that's why I have so many, but I can say Alice comes to me the easiest

who do you want to use more of?!

At this moment in time I really wish I could promote RAW to an active rp character! Give 'em some romantic interest and stuf! Alas, it's pretty hard nowadays haha

i saw that you rp! what are some of your favorite things you've done in rp? who is your favorite character to use? who do you want to use more of?!

thank you so much for the questions!! these are really fun and exciting! i'm also happy you live in MA! IM ENVIOUS!

the boston one:

so my entire cast of OCS are all in the same world, and massachusetts is the main place of action! i personally am not from mass or boston or live there (i'm from austin texas gdsaoghg), but i did have family up there in my youth and have fond memories of that area. it is so beautiful up there compared to how it is down here and the seasons in MA were things i never got to experience in my entire life living in texas. i grew up in a bad home, so when we were up there with my grandparents who expressed authentic love to me, it made me believe in myself and that i could be more than i thought i would be. i love it up north and boston/lexington/MA itself seemed like a really good setting for all casts of creations i have going (some of which aren't on TH!)

about dirk:

honestly, homestuck hasn't had much influence over anything that i do. i'm not really a big fan of it in all honesty, i only liked the striders and read it for dirk specifically because he was everything i wanted to be in a person and everything i also felt i was in a person. (then they went and did what they did to him now and i'm trying to ignore that b/c ugh). homestuck has some interesting stuff in it and def some vocabulary i wish i could even fathom to remember, but not something i really care to use for my direction.

I see that some of your superhero stuff is based in Boston, and that has me super excited as someone from the area! I don't see Boston used as a location too often, so is there a particular reason for it?

Also, since your icon is Dirk, I gotta ask, did Homestuck influence you in any way? I don't see anything obvious in your stuff, but it definitely changed the way I approached my characters' hobbies and interests, so I'm curious!

AH I forgot to change that, I've since graduated! Thanks for the reminder, though.

I majored in illustration, so rather than balance art and finals, my finals were art. and I ended having to sacrifice my time doing personal art for assignments. Because of the pressure from those, I botched a number of them and ended up with work that weren't to my standards.

If I have academic finals, I still draw the same amount, but I've usually had projects rather than exams, so I spend less time studying than average anyway; I can write most essays very quickly once the research portion is complete, so it doesn't dip into my time too much.

I see that you're taking a semi hiatus because of your finals right now (relatable btw T_T)! What is/are your major/s? I'm super interested in other peoples' subjects and majors, especially if they're from another country! Also, how do you manage doing art while finals are approaching? Do you still draw or do you take longer breaks in order to focus on studying?

hey there! (:

What caused you to start studying it in the first place? To be quite honest, I chose Pedagogy as my major because the only other option I had was business management and I swear I'd rather to literally anything else lol. Nothing huge in my area and I couldn't afford to move out, so I chose pedagogy. I've always thought about having a social job besides my old dream job, not necessarily working with children, but now that I am about to graduate, I'm actually super happy with my choice!

Has your study path changed since you started, or have your goals stayed the same as when you started? Before starting taking pedagogy classes, my goal was to get a degree in Pharmacy. Oddly weird to jump from medicine relate work to working with children, but hey, I'm glad I did. That dream is now replaced with social work, I guess.

Hey Kvroii !

Woah, an author! :v I was super impressed when I clicked on your character tab and saw legit-looking book covers as ur folder icons :0 Google tells me you're published, that's really cool!... what was that process like for u? Like, are u self published or did you send your stuff to a bunch of different places and one of them picked you up? Was it a difficult process? I don't really know much about all that, so I'm curious! Also, who's the target audience of ur novels? Bonus question: I'm also going to assume u enjoy reading... do you have any book recs? 👀

--

Ah hey! Thank u! <3 And thanks for the questions :v

I have made a little bit of music, though I'm still really new to it! Here's my current fav track from my soundcloud :v ...not really sure I'd call it a song per se, but I like how it turned out. I'm just starting 2 dabble in stuff that has lyrics and stuff too.... here is an extremely quick and dirty recording of an jangly emo lovesong I am working on disclaimer: i'm not a singer or a guitarist hence why it's not even on my SC zhzhz. Music is hard! But I definitely want to get better at it to the point where I can make the kind of stuff I really want to make :v

As for the roleplaying...! I only have one RP partner on the go at the moment, and, depending on how busy our respective lives are, I might get a chance to post anywhere between once a week or maybe even twice a day if we're really lucky. Admittedly, what I consider a paragraph might not be super meaty by some standards: the 300~400-word bracket is one I've found that works pretty nicely for me, although in faster paced bits this might go down to ~200. Posts that establish a scene get to ~1k. I know some people go wayyy more wild with their word-counts, but the longest I can recall writing was about ~3k words-- that must have been at the beginning of a scene haha :v

Hi! I really like your energy! I see you've been studying music! Have you made your own music? If so, share! If not, would you like to? Making music is super hard imo

On another topic, I also see that you rp multi-para! How often do you RP? And how long do you usually write in a single response? What's the longest rp response you've written?

What's your favourite thing about a fantasy setting?

MAGIC! I love magic & all the possibilities it might have in a fantasy setting. In fact, I have trouble getting into fiction stuff if it doesn't have even a little bit of magic haha, i just love the impossible stuff, wacky powers, fantasy races, but mostly the powers I guess... They're a big special interest of mine.

What is the weirdest roleplay you have ever done?

OH MAN sadly it's a roleplay I had with somebody I don't talk to anymore, but I once RPed NSFW between 'bros' in a scifi setting and Shrek was involved? It was a fucking ride

I wish I had a weirder one, maybe one day I'll top this one haha

What's your favourite food?

SUSHI I love sushi A LOT!! Korean food is also up there though!

What do you think the best part about your art is?

OH hard question- I guess the part I like the most (not necessarily the best... That's too difficult) is that I have a pretty distinct style! Something no one can do but me, you know? That keeps me going :D

Oh hell yeah it’s steam punk. I absolutely love the metal and detail you can have with it. I also love leather. I will say I dislike most colours with the style but I still love the style. It’s all super cool. She’s also my persona.

I really really like coffee, and it helps me function in the morning. On that note I actually do like tea, but I highly prefer coffee. It’s bitter but honestly I still love it.

Alexg47

TaniNeedsCoffee Is- is that steampunk I see in your icon? If so that's really neat, what you like most about that style? If not then how'd you choose that icon? Also I see you need coffee, but do you really like it or is that just your username? Also also following on from that, what do you think about tea?

"like everyone else, i noticed a lot of your ocs are from the periodic table! have you ever thought about making more from other scientific things? what about from things that aren't scientific?" Well I have this which is personified countries, whether that counts as scientific or not depends on your viewpoint, but more to the point I have had a ton more ideas for both scientific and non-scientific characters, but for right now I want to stick to just the two series I currently have.

"i get the assumption you're pretty big on science, so..is that true also?" Yep, I've been into it for about as long as I can remember.
