Day 8: Halloween Crafts

Dim sunlight shone through Peak’s curtainless window. The filly turned to the other side of the bed, rubbing her eyes. Then, they snapped open.

Today was the day! She jumped out of her bed and ran to the kitchen as fast as her small hooves could carry her. She heard a bark in the next room and yawned. Great! They could get started even earlier. She pulled the flour and sugar out of the cupboard, and set up a nice, big bowl on the counter. But by the time she was done setting up, a mare, yellow like herself, walked into the room, followed by a dog as big as the filly.

“Sweetie, please be a little more quiet, you’ll wake up the entire neighborhood.”

“But Mommy-” Peak hopped in one place “-Today’s Halloween.”

The mare shook her head and smiled. “I see.”

As her mother tied an apron around her neck, Peak noticed her father’s pink muzzle in the doorway. “What did I hear? It’s Halloween?” he asked. He walked into the kitchen with a parrot on his antler. “May I join the celebration?”

“Yes!”

The family baked some pancakes together. The mother, Difèrne, let the filly measure the ingredients and mix them. When it was done, she portioned the mix into separate bowls and added food colouring.

Peak watched her father, Baroque, pour the mix cookie cutters in a pan, expertly layering the colours to create pictures. He sometimes passed her the ladle and let create some too! When they all sat down at the table, they began their yearly discussion of who would get to eat the prettiest pancake while Friend the dog begged for scraps (successfully, might Peak add).

“Take all of them, I just want the pumpkin one, please,” Difèrne would say.

“But you got the pumpkin one last year!” the filly whined.

“That’s why I made two of them this year,” Baroque winked.  “For my two princesses.”

“You didn’t make one for yourself?” the mare and filly exclaimed in outrage.

Once breakfast was over, Peak cleared the table for her parents. This gave her father plenty of space to set up the crafting materials. What her parents brought was always a surprise. Sometimes, they had coloured paper, sometimes, they had markers. This time, her father set down fabric on the table.

“Let’s try and sew a plushie, today!”

Peak cheered.

Admittedly, sewing with hooves was far from easy. The filly couldn’t help but envy her mother’s telekinesis, which made everything noticeably easier. Because of this, the filly constantly asked her mother to thread her needle, which the mare did benevolently.

Although the sewing itself was not especially enjoyable, she liked cutting the fabric and seeing her black cat taking shape. Granted, it’s legs were crooked and it’s ears were out of line, but it gave her the impression of finally having a pet like her parents did.

“You’re doing a great job, sweetie,” Difèrne said, pucking some beads in her daughter’s direction to be used as eyes.

Baroque had already finished a little fabric pumpkin. He gave it to his parrot, which immediately began chewing on it.

“Don’t give it to him!” the filly squeaked. “He’ll destroy it.”

“He’s telling me that he likes it. I want Sing to celebrate with us, too, so I made him a little gift.”

“Aww.”

After that, her parents told her to put her craft away while they cleaned to have dinner. Then, she could finalize her mermaid costume and go trick or treating together.
