Day 23: Fluffy

Clastic regarded the day of Halloween just as any other day. To her, it was simply october 31st, the final bow of the month, another day of autumn. Halloween was for foals, she had convinced herself. Yet, she could help but feel inspired by the tradition, its stories and themes. She presently sat in her small kitchen, writing down her thoughts on this ordinary, yet captivating day, while sipping some warm tea (Anevay knows how often she had accidently dipped her quill in the tea, or else took a sip out of her ink. Everyday, Calstic swore she would come up with a system to prevent this, but never did.)

She was ripped out of her thoughts by the sound of knocking on her door. How strange. She could have sworn that her boringly plain yard would indicate that she did not celebrate the holiday. She sighed. The knocking intensified.

The mare opened the door. Beyond it was a fully grown stallion.

“Trick or treat,” he grinned, revealing sharp teeth like those of a wolf.

The mare was taken aback. “I’m sorry, but you’re a tad too old for this, aren’t you?”

“I am not,” the stallion responded. “So, trick or treat?”

“It’s too early for this, please come back later at the same time as the others,” she tried again.

“Impossible, it’s never too early, nor is it too late, for Halloween,” the stallion answered, clearly enjoying himself.

“By that logic, you could demand candies from strangers anytime of the year. Go now,” Clastic grumbled. She closed the door.

The stallion stopped her with his hoof. “Are you saying that you don’t have any candy for me?” the stallion raised an eyebrow mischievously.

“No, I do not. Kindly see yourself out of my proper-” The mare didn’t have time to finish her sentence when the stallion walked into her house.

“Then that means you owe me a trick!” he said in delight. “Per the laws of Halloween, I’m allowed to play a trick on you and there’s nothing you can do about it!”

“That’s not how-” she tried following him into the kitchen.

“Don’t follow me, it’d ruin the surprise!” The stallion paused. “In fact, it’d be best if you waited outside.”

“There is no way I’m letting a total stranger into my house, much less without supervision!” the saxues mare exploded.

The stallion shrugged. “I get it. Fine, fine. But at least close your eyes, and don’t cheat!” he chuckled.

“If I let you do this, will you finally leave me alone!”

“Pinky promise!” the stallion answered.

The mare rolled her eyes. She heard him tinker with her tea and journal. “He better not be reading my things!” she thought in alarm. She desperately wanted to open her eyes, but feared her disobedience may warrant another trick.

“There, you can open them.” She opened her eyes just as the stranger was leaving. “Happy Halloween! And, a little word of advice for you: you better get some goodies before the foals start to arrive, or else some may do much worse.” She watched him run away down the street before closing the door.

Now to see the damage he had done.

An empty page of her journal was now decorated with a rather exact portrait of the stranger. Her gaze drifted to the signature: “Fluffy”. She smiled. If all tricks were like this, she certainly would enjoy getting more visitors at this time of the year. Maybe she will set a few decorations up and back something next year. For now, however, she would enjoy some peace and keep on journaling.

She spat out her tea. The drink in her cup had been replaced with ink.
