Day 13: Death and Rebirth
Carrot Cake poked the crumbling pumpkin with her hoof. The carved face was barely distinguishable anymore due to the collapse of the weaker parts. Everyday, her mother insisted that they throw it away because it was stinking up the neighborhood, but the filly held on to her first jack-o-lantern with dear life. In the end, the mare always sighed and agreed to keep it one more night. Today, the filly admitted that she could no longer convince her mom.
Difèrne happened to be walking by with her trusty dog, Friend. “Why the long face, dear?” she called out, stopping in the middle of the road to assess the situation.
The filly half-heartedly waved. “My pumpkin’s all rotten. It used to be so pretty.”
“That’s unfortunately what pumpkins do when left out in the open.” Difèrne walked to the porched to study the plant. “Eesh, this smells like it should have been thrown away a long time ago.”
“But I don’t wanna! I don’t want Halloween to end! I’ve been having so much fun!” the filly whined.
“There will be other holidays,” Difèrne said warmly. She thought for a second. “Here, why don’t you grab a bag and carry the pumpkin home with me. It can still be of use.”
“Really? How?”
The yellow mare smiled mysteriously. Curious, the filly hurryingly packed up the yucky fruit and ran over to Auntie Difèrne’s place. There, the mare guided her to a wooden box in her garden. She invited Cake to drop the pumpkin’s remains in. “This is a composter. It’ll make your pumpkin into nice garden soil to grow more plants out of.”
Cake giggled. “Wouldn’t it be funny to grow more pumpkins out of this one?”
“We could do that. And then we can use them as jack-o-lanterns next year too!”
The filly squealed in happiness. “Thanks, Auntie! I can’t wait.”
