Strains: Type A
Note: This section is in need of a rewrite.
Type A viral vampirism, otherwise known as the Reference Strain, is a rather dramatic variety of
vampirism characterised by two main features: shorter, hooked upper fangs for easier latching of prey,
and a built-in tendency toward the brutal and animalistic side of the host’s psyche-- somewhat shared
with Type B, though its tendency has been watered down by evolution.
Someone afflicted with full-strength Type A vampirism often needs to hunt and consume sapient blood
more often than if they were a Type B carrier to successfully keep their base instincts in check, or,
as has been documented in a large number of cases, the instinct takes over their mind and they-
sometimes irreversibly- become feral. This instinct can be ignored, but it requires extremely high
mental discipline, and not all are capable of it.
The tendency towards the feral readily manifests itself in the hunting habits of Type A carriers, as
they quite often make full use of their hooked fangs to latch on to prey and not let go. This has led
to the idea that all Type A carriers are known to tear the throats of their prey out, but this has an
equal chance of happening by accident as the prey struggles. Still, attempted resistance of a Type A
carrier’s latch isn’t only usually futile, but also often fatal.
