A series of skits about Esredes and his past, following the knochen from his first hours up until a few years before present time. With the aid of many others and his own internal will, Esredes strives down a path laid out in front of him, a path that one cannot tell whether it is natural or manmade.

The Next Step

When the time came to leave, he almost didn't want to. But he knew it was time to begin his own journey in pursuit of his dream, and one day he told everyone that today was to be the day. As he stood near the edge of the plains, with the barrier in sight behind him, he faced two knochen who had come to wish him well- his second mentor, whose gaze had lost its sharpness, and his birther, prepared to see one of her creations leave the space she had first laid eyes upon him in.

Birther: You're confident you're ready to fly all the way out there, right?
Esredes: I can make it. I know I've practiced enough for it.
Mentor: He's right, he is ready. I have no doubt you'll make it there and do just fine, Esrey.
Birther: It's been a long time since anyone from this tribe has joined the nochmal. But you've always been so passionate about it like no one has ever seen. The way you pestered all the adults when you were little to know more about it until they all got sick of hearing the word...
Esredes: I know, I know, I was annoying. But it was worth it to get to this point.
Esredes: I'm determined to do this. For myself and for my species. For the knochen that need my help....
Birther: Of course, you show those humans your passion. But just promise us you'll be careful out there.
Esredes: Don't worry, I will be. I'll do everything I can to protect myself.
Mentor: Well, we both wish you the best of luck in training. Please come and visit when you can. Everyone will want to know how you're doing there.
Esredes: *He nods* Of course they will. I'm sure I'll find something worth being told for them.
Mentor: Well, are you all set then?
Esredes: I think I better get going. But before I do, I just want to tell you both...
Esredes: Thank you for everything.
Birther: *She smiles at that.* You're welcome. Make us all proud.
Mentor: I'm glad to have done all of it. Now have a safe journey, Esredes.
Esredes: *He nods, and turns around, spreading his wings in preparation for take off. He looks back at them both one last time, then lifts off the ground, flapping his wings hard a few times to make it over the barrier. Once he's on the skies, the wind aids his voyage. He looks down at the sea of trees passing below him, and feels a sense of exhilaration. He's ready for this. He can do this and nothing will stop him.*

In that moment, all the excitement of the journey ahead fueled his wings on, and he felt like he could do anything. But eventually, the feeling passed, and as the flight stretched on, in settles a feeling of vulnerability.

For the first time in his life, he was entirely alone.
