Lore/History

You sit down with Elder Sol.

After much convincing, they sit you down and begin to tell how they started out. The Great Elder Sol, and his origin story.

“Oh, it happened so long ago…” Elder Sol mumbles, tapping their head. “An old noggin like mine can only carry so much.”

“I was born millions of years ago, alongside a giant, blazing star. Humans call it the Sun.” They pause to smile briefly– reminiscing on the fond memories, you think.

“I watched the universe grow. Planets being made. Watching the habitable zone fill up around my Sun… and then watching one, specific planet that caught my interest.” Elder Sol’s eyes appeared misty, but you simply assume it was a trick of the light.

“At the time, the only thing I knew was my name– Sol, and my species– Krynova. But my curiosity took over me, and I was eager to learn more.”

“Eventually, I went to it. The big planet. It was filled with… other creatures. I didn’t know what they spoke of, or even what they were. But, now I do.”

“I was in… in between two big blocks, which is called an alley to humans. That’s where I landed, after going to this strange planet– at least, that’s what I thought of it at the time.”

“A… thing took me in. And it taught me everything, everything I know now and everything I teach you.”

“She called herself a human… I miss them still, but what their partner did was unacceptable. I’ll begin with the less boring part of the story,” He chuckled. “Sorry to have you wait.”

And so, Elder Sol took a deep breath and began.

“When this… human took me in, first she taught me English. That was the most useful thing I could learn. It was.. it was so magical. It seemed that random scribbles began to make sense to me. And they did.”

“And— they were so sweet. So sweet to me. The only human that was sweet to me.” He spat out those last words like venom— what happened to Elder Sol? What was so bad about the human world?

“At first, they just appeared with a big trash bag. You know what that is, yes?” You nod your head. Elder Sol had told you about some of the things that weren’t often found on Kryno.

“I was so startled, I almost jumped out of my skin.” He laughs. “They told me they wouldn’t hurt me. I didn’t understand a word she said!” He laughed, remembering each memory fondly. “I can’t believe I was so ignorant. I was so young then. Again, she taught me English. How to pronounce things. Accents. Timezones. Anything I can think of, basically. Everything I know… except for the incident. It was the first thing I learned on my own.” He scowls.

“Anyways– they kept me a secret. In her attic. I was too scared to go out and meet people… and she was okay with that. So she set up a classroom with everything in their attic. A chalkboard, a desk… all her books. Well, all the ones they had about education. And I remember, oh, I remember reading until it was nighttime and she went to sleep… and I kept a light on in the attic, studying and in the morning when their husband went to work, she would come upstairs before she had to work to teach me some more.”

“Weekends were my favorite days, but it was because she could teach me all day, then. I liked it when she would stay home for vacations, after her husband gets a break. She would take care of the house, and when her husband returned home, he would bring back gifts from across the world! At least, that’s what she told me. And they would talk and talk about their husband… he seemed like such a nice person.” Elder Sol paused to smile, and stopped midway.

“She kept teaching me for years… five years, to be exact. And I knew everything she knew that was important, and so did she. She taught me all the things I could learn and I crammed it all in my brain.”

“One day, during a history lesson, I told them to pause. I told them that I was ready to meet all the humans, after she insisted for a few days before that. I told her that humanity had seen… a lot, from the bubonic plague to chernobyl to the world wars. She told me it seemed too much of a big jump– so she… she suggested I meet her husband first. So, that was it. I was ready, I was so brave, to meet the rest of the humans.”

“So, to take baby steps, as she called it, they brought me downstairs and to the yard, where their husband was chopping wood. I lingered behind her. I was scared, and truly, I was. And her husband looked up at her with such warmth, he seemed so incredibly nice. So, I made a mistake. I peeked out from behind them.”

“Her husband started screaming. Yelling. WHAT IS THAT THING BEHIND YOU?! RUN! IT’S LOOKING AT ME! WHAT THE HELL IS THAT THING?!?” He mimicked, waving his hands in the air.

“He caught them off guard, so she flinched and turned around to explain. She told him it was alright, but her husband didn’t listen. He didn’t. And he made a BIG mistake.”

“I tried to explain too. But her husband had raised his axe in his panic… she rushed toward him to tell him to stop, but he thought she was running toward him, away from me.”

“He lunged toward me.. And.. and..” Elder Sol looks at their scarred arm.

“He swung his axe at me. Screaming bloody hell.”

“He missed the first few times.”

“Miss, miss, miss, hit.”

“It hurt so bad. My arm… it felt like it was going to fall off. But it didn’t. She tried to explain, young one. But her husband was so scared he didn’t listen. He didn’t listen, at all!”

“I ran. I ran back into the house and back into the attic, and she tried to chase after me. She followed me into the attic, with her husband rushing into the sink to get what humans call blood off of his axe. He was coming for round two, and I was scared. So scared I couldn’t breathe.”

“She tried to apologize to me. But I had seen enough. She was the only good human in that… wretched place. I recommend you shouldn’t go there, little one. It’s big and dangerous.” He sighs.

“Later that night, I left. I left a note behind, and I wrote something like;

Dear my beloved caretaker,

I’m sorry I’m leaving.

I have seen too much. You have been the kindest and sweetest to me, and I love you.

But I just cannot stay. I can’t stay knowing that he is there. I’m scared, and I know I’m scared.

I’m leaving. I’m sorry, and I’ll miss you. I’ll think about you from time to time, I promise.

But I won’t be coming back. Thank you for teaching me, and raising me, and making sure I wasn’t a bad Krynova. Thank you for teaching me basic languages and telling me how to make gestures. Thank you for teaching me tones and other things.

But I am going. That is final. You were like a mother to me, and I am leaving.

You would say that I grew my own wings… and you raised me, when I was a little hatchling, as you would say.

Now, the little hatchling has grown in all their feathers… I have grown wings, and this is me, flying away.

Goodbye, and I love you so much. Thank you for everything.

He took a deep breath. “I left the note by my desk that night. I took all my favorite clothes and left extra money I found in the alleyway to recover for all the money she’d spent on me.. Though it was not nearly as much, I know she wouldn’t mind.”

“But, little one, there is more. Outside of earth.”

“I found a planet. A new, brand new planet not far from Earth. And I named it Krynous Astravoid. It’s the planet we are standing on right now.” He smiles, proud.

“And the rest?” He says. You nod.

“Well, you know the rest, if you have been listening to the elders. I just have one last thing to say– you shouldn’t go on Earth. It’s a dangerous place and they never like newcomers. They are aggressive and start worldwide wars for stupid things they do.”

“So, that’s the end. Well, nowhere is the end. But the end for this part of my story,” He gets up and stretches.

“Come on, little one. We have many more stories to tell.”
