It's time.... for summer! Are you ready? You better be.

de06kes-8f66bb0e-ca44-40b7-924f-b83654de

Event Updates

  • Wrapup has been posted for [World Champion]! Isn't it beautiful to have peace and prosperity all over Scatterstar forever and ever?
  • A new event, [Devil in the Details], has dropped! Can YOU crack the code?
  • Speaking of codes, regarding the actual puzzle: please do not share direct translations/keys in your entries! Not everyone will finish it at the same time. Don't feel like solving it? Check back for event updates to find translations (and more passages to try) on Wednesdays!

Adopts and Designs

  • There will be an unlimited 24hr MYO sale on May 7th!
  • A Guest Design Megabatch will open on May 5th as a FLAFFLE!
  • Auctionrios this month? More likely than you think....

Trait Changes

Some alterations and updates have been made to the curio [trait site]! Here's a quick summary for your convenience:

  • All four Legendary pages have received some updated images!
  • Tech-touched eye rules have been clarified and expanded regarding eyes. "Glowing eye rings" has been depreciated as a trait but is still useful for adding tech touched to other vessel sets that create blank eyes. So, be sure to check it out if you're messing around with those.
  • Examples for adding trait effects to the blank eyes of Possession and Ancient Sight have been added and clarified.
  • Allowed colour range for Possession and Starmapped glowing markings has been expanded. If using the new dark-markings, be sure to include a glowing version of your design as well (like [this].)
  • The Possession page's writing has been updated to reflect increased knowledge about the AI, and a new in-world article has been added from Dr. Charlize.
  • Small changes in language in a few spots on the site to be a bit clearer, and a new example image for Vivid Eyes.

If your curio has one of these traits and you'd like to make a change, please use the Design Submissions guide on the sidebar to send in your design edit.

Other Stuff

  • There may be some delays in the first half of May due to.... well, HEAVENDELUXE will be getting married and clockrobber will be officiating! So that'll take up some time huh. Thank you for your patience!

Congrats to GrunkleAnn 's [Umiko] for being Curio of the Month! Don't forget that you can include her in your entries for +2T on top of the usual guest bonus this month.

Thanks for joining us this fine spring!

Devil In the Details

[ monthly event]

The last time most outsiders laid eyes on the Hive it was in ruin after the mutant scourge was unleashed upon it. Now, a full year after that tragic event, the damage has been fully repaired and if anything the Hive has grown!

All this is thanks to the young hero turned mayor Sev! Sev has been eager to use knowledge from all across the world to help improve the Ankuri stronghold. Besides integrating new technologies and techniques, the Hive has changed things to be more accommodating to curios of different shapes and sizes, including the large Eisgar and diminutive Undyre.

Sev refuses to take credit, citing the multiple Ankuri colleagues that have made these changes possible for the Hive. He does have one special pet project he is willing to take credit for… and has sent out an invitation for all those interested to come and experience for themselves.

The Hive has intercepted Ancient radio chatter.

There’s no cause for alarm! The Hive security team has worked with all the other departments to confirm that curiokind is not in any danger of being detected. They are simply passively collecting transmissions passing by. That said, there has been one minor complication.

No one can understand them.

dhbr2o2-f09e1ae0-2625-45b4-b596-4762f028

On top of being encoded, the language seems to have shifted in the past few centuries. Scholars are left scratching their heads when it comes to these transmissions and are seeking help to crack them. These messages are open for the public to view on the HUB as well as in little booklets the Ankuri team have been able to assemble (thanks to the wealth of paper from the mainland!) so folks from all over can try their hand at decoding. More messages are being intercepted daily and those are being posted as well. As of right now these are the three most complete transmissions:

Click any transmission to see a black and white version.

What your curio can do

Depict your curio as these Ancient updates are released! Are they keen to help with the decoding project, or against all further involvement with Ancient tech? Maybe their scholarly background will give them an edge, or perhaps they're totally stumped by even the simplest of ciphers.

The transmissions can be accessed by connecting to the ever-expanding global HUB (the internet, kind of!), via booklets that have been distributed to every hobby shop and corner store willing to carry them, or by visiting the Hive and other Aunmarask warrens. They're all over the news, too, so our apologies to any curio who is absolutely done with Ancient business after these past few summers....

Feel free to team up to try and solve the code, but be careful not to include the answers in your entries--others may not have solved it as quickly as you! If you'd like to join a group effort, you can check out the "summer-event-workroom" channel in the discord server (or mute it to hide spoilers!).

Solving the transmissions yourself is not required to participate in this event. Answers will be posted behind links as updates are released.

Happy decoding!

Summer Event 2024 Prologue

Posted 3 days, 22 hours ago by clockrobber

15,296 Years Ago

Something heavy landed on Vivion and jolted her awake. The initial shock wore off quickly as she felt four paws padding up her long back. She closed both sets of eyes again only to snap them back open when she heard something gnawing at the ends of her blonde mane.

“Socks!” She sat uptight and flung her pet across the room where it landed harmlessly on the rug. The black and white ankuri regarded his owner with unblinking yellow eyes. He was expecting breakfast.

Vivion groaned and lifted her chest off the upper shelf of the two tiered bed frame. Sunlight was pouring in through the many windows that lined the walls and ceiling of the observatory tower. She had stayed up late with her telescope and forgotten to shutter them before falling asleep. She grumbled as she dismounted the bed frame and stretched her long body, her eyes slowly adjusting to the bright light. There was no point in closing the windows now…

She twitched her hand and used an auric nudge to send a can of pet food flying across the room which she handedly caught midair. Socks didn’t wait for her to open it before loping over. “Aren’t you so sure of yourself? I should let you starve.” She unscrewed the lid with a wave of her hand and set it down for her pet to eat.

She wasn’t really that cross with him. Socks had been her only companion most of her stay on the planet. Her older sister had arranged for her to come along as a surprise present, but with her sister mostly wrapped up in meetings, Vivion was on her own. She wandered over to the wide southern window that looked out over the city of Sea’s Jewel and the ocean beyond. She triggered the switch to open it with a light auric push and soon the sea breeze was sweeping in. Her blonde mane whipped around her and she closed her eyes and took in the pleasurable sensation. It was nothing like home, that was for sure.

Socks hopped up beside her and rested his head against her thin arm. She reached over and stroked his head. “Maybe we should go adventuring, you and I? See the plains, slay a few rogue monsters, become heroes.” She started to close her eyes and daydream about being a real pioneer only for Socks to dash past her and onto the ledge outside. She reached out with her aura to pull him back in, but he was beyond her range and she was afraid of being more forceful with him. She was several years off from being dexterous enough with her aura to scruff him and pull him back that way.

She stamped her foot and lashed her tail threateningly. “Socks! If you don’t come back I’ll- Just please come back?” She extended a hand but her pet merely looked at her before turning his gaze back towards the ships soaring through the air towards the upper city. She sighed and stepped away from the window. He’d come back when he was hungry. Or maybe she could find an adult to reel him back in. Ship captains were a dime a dozen in the city and they could all use their auras to nab an ankuri hundreds of yards away with their eyes closed.

The hatch to the observatory swung open and sent Vivion leaping into the air. “Targa?” She had to double check to make sure the person who had just entered the room really was her sister. Her short mane was ruffled and her clothing was in complete disarray. It was nothing like her usual prim and proper self.

“Vi, come with me. We need to go right now.”

Vivion stood unmoving, trying to discern if this was some kind of prank.

“There’s been an accident.”

Vivion looked out the window at the peaceful blue skies and narrowed her eyes.

“The World Engine has detonated. We have to go.” Targa closed the distance between them and took hold of her younger sister’s wrist. Vivion dug in her heels, reaching back towards the window.

“Socks is-“

Targa released her and moved to the window where she cast out her aura so quickly and with so much force it was almost visible to Vivion. Socks screamed as he was grabbed, flung through the air, and thrust into Vivion’s chest.

“Move!” Targa roared.

——

A strange green cast had crept across the sky and confusion had spread through the streets. People walked out of their homes or watched from balconies as the green darkened and expanded like blood in water. Vivion kept Socks close to her chest and for once he was compliant.

“Why are there no alarms?” Vivion asked her sister, but she didn’t get a response.

By the time they reached the space docks, the other citizens had caught on that something was very wrong. The first wave of people, some she recognized from parties with Targa’s superiors, were already trying to find passage off the planet. It seemed they had been informed of what had happened first. Conversations with captains were turning more aggressive as more and more people arrived and yet no one was boarding. Targa took her by the arms and pulled her towards a small ship at the far side of the dock. The side hatch was open and people were starting to load as surreptitiously as possible.

But it didn’t go unnoticed for long. Just as the two sisters were within boarding distance someone shouted and pointed and a crush of people started to run for the open hatch. Someone knocked into Vivion so hard she stumbled and Socks, terrified, bolted. Targa forced her upright and began to haul her into the ship.

Vivion tried to track her little pet in the chaos but she couldn’t see him. “Targa! Let me go back!”

Targa threw her into the ship, using her aura to knock her back several feet by force. Vivion collided with several other passengers who didn’t seem to really care. They just pushed back. She was too shocked by the experience of having an adult use their aura against her to form words. The hatch began to close and she could hear shouting from the outside. Targa didn’t move until the ship began to lift off.

She turned to Vivion who was still staring at her in blank shock. “Don’t look at me that way. Even a pet would put a strain on life support. Is an ankuri more important than another person, Vivion?”

“What will happen to everyone else?” Vivion demanded. The loss of Socks stung horribly but the thought of thousands of desperate people left behind was too much to bear.

“They’ll be rescued. Exposure to the chemical leak will take its toll… But, they’ll be rescued. It was important we left as quickly as possible,” Targa explained as she drew in close to her sister. There was no point in being discreet among their particular company. Everyone who had left first was aware of what was at stake.

Vivion pressed her face up to a porthole and watched the city shrink into nothingness below them. She stood there until they had left the atmosphere, and the planet below was just a blue marble. The thought of Socks’ yellow eyes looking up from the surface flashed through her head and she had to draw away in shame.

“We were going to be adventurers,” she whispered.

If anyone heard her, they did not respond. Everyone was lost in quiet contemplation of what the future held after a disaster that would surely go down asone of the worst in the history of the Empire. The fate of a few ankuri was hardly anyone’s main concern.

——

Below, Socks had found cover under a pile of building material stored off to the side in the dock. He watched with wide eyes as the Ancients scrambled and fought to get on the ships. Things were chaotic until the ones in uniforms and masks appeared on the biggest ship yet. Suddenly order was restored, though based on the weapons they carried in their hands, it was through force and not reassurance.

Socks waited until the sun came and went and all had gone quiet before emerging. The air felt charged and made his fur stand on end, but he was not sick the way the last Ancients had been as they boarded their ships. He felt fine.

He made his way towards home.

The streets were empty of Ancients, but he passed a few of his own kind along the way. The doors to his house were open and he made his way inside. The observatory was empty and his calls went unanswered. For the first time he felt something akin to doubt, though in what he could not articulate.

He hopped up on the bottom tier of the bedframe and then onto the upper tier where his friend had once laid her head. It was cold. He stood there for a moment before curling up into a ball on the plush upholstery. His chest ached and he felt nervous. The sky was almost uniformly green above him and lightning was starting to spark in the gathering clouds.

He had determined he would be alright in the end. He was resourceful and cunning after all, but he longed to lay eyes on his friend again. He wanted to know if she was alright.

He wanted to wish her well.

A Special Announcement

We also have a special announcement to make! You may have noticed some signs already, but this summer's events will be the final major story arc for Scatterstar Isles. It's been a wild five years and 55 events so far, and we're proud to see all of these threads weave into a grand conclusion beginning in May 2024!

What does this mean for the Scatterstar Isles ARPG? There will still be plenty of entries and excitement in the Isles! In fact, you'll have more freedom than ever to tell your own special story. Here's a brief road map for the future of the ARPG:

  • Expeditions, Guild Exams, and Master Hunts will continue to be available at any time, perfect for those endless ideas and character backstories.
  • Monthly story events will conclude after July 2024.
  • Event Stamps will also conclude, congrats to our biggest collectors!
  • After July, Clockrobber and Heavendeluxe will go on break for a time. There will be several months of event reruns, featuring old favourites both pivotal and just plain fun! If you weren't around during these events, it's a great opportunity to see what your curio would do. If you already completed them, you might be ready for the tougher questions: what if things had gone differently....?
  • Speaking of, you can suggest events you want to see again for reruns in our [dedicated suggestion box]!
  • After the end of the reruns, Scatterstar Isles will resume with new, story-light events on a longer update cycle.

We want to give a sincere thank you to everyone who has ever played Scatterstar Isles. We can spin tales and game systems all day, but the true heart and joy of the game is the people who join us to play. Your stories, your characters, your time and effort and love and care--these are everything to us, and make the whole labour of love worthwhile. So, thank you, from the bottom of our hearts! We truly could not do it without you!

In the mean time, get hype for the upcoming summer arc--it's totally out of this world ;)

If you have any questions we recommend asking in the discord server for the quickest answer. We'd also like to invite you to keep an eye out for our future projects-- Scatterstar isn't going anywhere, but fresh new stories are on the horizon, and we have big plans to take everything we've learned here and build even higher with the next game!

Thank you again, here's to another grand summer together!

World Champion!

[ monthly event]

dh5k7hl-ba3c143d-ce27-4e26-b7e3-e02e5ec0

At one time the annual athletic games hosted by the Guilds was a small affair meant to bring the different organizations together in a fun and lighthearted way. However, times have changed and in turn the scope of games have expanded to reflect the new world curios inhabit.

Welcome to the first Curio World Championship. CWC for short!

Many of the former organizers for the Guilds have pitched in to create this new larger event. Duke of the Hunter’s Guild was particularly interested in investing in the undertaking and is the CWC largest sponsor. By his request a few figures have emerged to help diversify the games so that all subspecies can test their mettle.

dh5ke2s-618d77e3-9298-42e9-84f2-7b9d8600

Doran of Sonderrime has stepped up to help with the Eisgar specific events which include several feats of strength and some hand to hand combat. Certain events allow cross species participation while others are limited to Eisgar contestants to help create a level playing field.

Duya has been called upon to oversee the Undyre related sports that focus heavily on swimming and diving. As a former judge to the games Duya has eagerly accepted the task and has encouraged all curios to try competing. There have been next to no Ankuri sign ups so he has quietly put together a separate program to teach willing desert dwellers how to swim…

Alph has been dragged out of the cockpit to help put together Ankuri friendly challenge. He’s organized several track and field events along with obstacle courses. Similarly to Duya he has opened these events up to all subspecies, though Eisgar must be measured and weighed before they’re approved. Some obstacles could prove a tight fit for the large subspecies…

Of all curios to undertake the largest chunk of the competitions events no one was expecting Peatbog Pete to step up to the plate. After years of running his dubious scout summer camp program he assures everyone he is fully capable of running the show! He has organized several team based events that require curios with all different specialties to work together including a relay course with a mix of swimming, speed, and strength based challenges. So far it has been proving to be one of the most popular events!

Like before, the events are taking place on the Lost Plains south of Rumba Sumba. Temporary camps have been set up for athletes and plenty of opportunistic curios have come from all around to sell food and make merry while the games are underway.

Be you a spectator or participant, everyone is in for a good time.

Now all that’s left to do is let the games begin!

-Wrap Up-

The games wrap up without incident. Everyone leaves in high spirits, some staying a few days after the games’ conclusion to hang out with friends new and old. It’s peaceful.

A courier riding across the plains slows her steed to pause and look up at the sky. The weather had stayed nice during the games but now clouds were rolling in and piling high to form an angry looking thunderhead. The majestic clouds are golden and luminous against the dark blue evening sky, but lightning flashes in the belly of the behemoth and thunder rolls so loudly that the rider’s nyknyka spooks.

The rider reins in her mount and gives the storm one last look. Sights like this aren’t uncommon on the plains but something about it strikes the rider as ominous. It looks like the end times writ across the horizon, she thinks.

The rider tips her hat and spurs on her steed. She’ll look for cover in Rumba Sumba and wait out the storm there.

What your curio can do

Depict your curio attending or participating in the Curio World Championship! Are they the sporty type who's trained for years, or a raw talent who will be a rising underdog out in the field? Or maybe they're not particularly good at anything.... so why not join the audience instead?

Interpreters will be necessary to assist participants who don't speak mainlander, and of course somebody's gonna have to run the varmint-dog stand. Maybe your curio is collecting a paycheck this time around?
