Expeditions

The Isles are home to an amazing array of flora, fauna, and landscapes. Curios traverse the islands for all sorts of reasons, including to discover, to trade, and to hunt. Expeditions are a chance for players to engage with the world of Scatterstar and tell unique stories of their own design.

Essentially, these are free-form prompts that allow you to write or draw your curio doing anything you choose, so long as it meets the correct level of finish and is set within Scatterstar Isles. They could be having a tea party with friends, be fishing on the beach, be exploring a ruin, or having an average day in the life.

Any location can be used so long as it is cohesive with the setting of the Scatterstar Isles. This means you can be anywhere from a forest near Dead Mountain to an unnamed port on the western coast. Just don't put your curio in places such as a gas station, modern theme park, space station, etc, as these things do not exist in this setting at this time.

You can find more information about regions and established locations here!

In addition to token or EXP payouts, all entries receive a rolled reward of both an item and a crafting material. For the payouts on each, check the appropriate section below.

EXP or Tokens?

Expedition entries can earn your curio either experience or tokens, but not both. You must clearly indicate which one you are earning in the description of your entry.

No matter which reward you go with, your entry will be eligible to earn bonus tokens or EXP in the form of item drops!

To calculate payouts, please use our Payout Guide.

Rules & Requirements

  • Entries must be submitted using the Expedition form below in order to be rolled.
  • You must choose if you want to earn tokens or EXP with your entry. Your entry will not be rolled unless you've indicated tokens or EXP in your submission form. Once your entry has been rolled, you can't change your mind!
  • If using a chance-boosting item (such as the Lantern), you must include the type of item, a link to your tracker, and a note of what you're putting the chance increase towards. Please include this under the 'Items Used' category.
  • Drawn entries must be fully coloured, shaded, and have at least a simple background. 75% of the body must be showing of the focus curio, and 50% of any guest characters/pets/mounts.
  • Written entries must be 1800 words minimum. Any guest characters/pets/mounts must be mentioned evenly throughout the story to be counted for a bonus.
  • Collaborations are allowed. Check the 'Collaborative Work' section of the full rules for specific requirements.
  • Entries must be submitted on the Expedition Turn-In thread.
  • Players must abide by all other group rules.

When you're finished with your entry, submit it to the Expedition Turn-In thread and include this form in your comment:

Material Drops

Crafting material drops are determined by area. Each area in Scatterstar has 3 corresponding materials (organic, inorganic, and tech), and you can choose whicih set you want by using the corresponding area in your entry. All materials in an area have an equal chance of being rolled.

To count for an area, you must list the name of it in your submission form, and your entry must link to it somehow. This can be very directly (on a boat at sea, trekking through the jungle, exploring the forest caves), or more subtle (a home made of desert stone, the front desk of the Merchant's Guild HQ in Seajewel, a relevant business sign in Wellstone). You may use established locations or make up your own, so long as these requirements are met. For entries that depict two areas (ex: a jungle shore with a view of the ocean), you may only claim one area's reward.

Areas marked with a triangle badge require a curio to be ranked Journeyman or above to receive a material. You may use these settings for entries featuring lower ranked curios, but you will not get a material reward.

Plains

small motor cord ceramic

A grassy windswept expanse, known for its artifact density and numerous digsites. Its largest city is the underground Rumba Sumba, home to the Archaeologist's Guild Headquarters.

Desert

power node cord gold

Red sand and blazing sun for miles. Hemmed in by mountains, it gets very little rain, but the cliff city of Paydo Moga seems to thrive anyway. Bring lots of water, and travel at your own risk.

Jungle

sensor node fur metal scrap

A place stalked by unknown beasts day and night. The safest travel is by platform and zipline, and the treehouse city of Dula Dula is a nest of such things. It also holds the Hunter's Guild HQ

Coast

wire cloth glass vessel

The warm Southern Sea and its miles of coastline. Bright trade port Seajewel and unsightly pirate colony Jun Nazu spar regularly. The deadly reef known as the Breaks looms over them both.

Bog

power node mystery seedpod coal

Wet and marshy, with peat bogs that hide unfathomable secrets. While most would steer clear of its difficult terrain, there is a digsite at Petey Burro with.... mixed reviews.

Forest

bulb rubber crystal

Leafy green deciduous forests that follow the coast. The largest of its many perilous caves houses historic Wellstone, considered the capitol of the civilized world.

Mountains

heartroot strange alloy tech core

Dead Mountain is the tallest mountain in the range, and apparently hollow. It and the other peaks are treacherous even in summer. The inexperienced may not return alive.

Sonderrime

bladebloom sundew berries torn page

Known for long winters and harsh terrain. Despite the ruthless northern winds, however, life flourishes under the snow.

Western Tonpelli

gross component ancient circuit heatsink

The Tonpelli Blues keep the cyborgs well enough at bay for Undyre to make a living. Don't let your guard down, though.

Eastern Tonpelli

blue pigment complex lenses conductive compound

Still patrolled by cyborgs, the eastern half of Tonpelli is a dangerous ruin and a potential grave. The salvage, however, is to die for....

Aunmarask Sector

charge prism sytheleaf dawnstone

A harsh landscape that reveals the carelessness of the Ancients. However, the Ankuri spirit lives on beneath the sands.

Expedition Prompts

While Expeditions can follow any story your heart desires (or no story at all!), you may find yourself looking for some ideas. Luckily there is a selection of prompts to choose from! There are no special prizes or requirements for using a prompt from this list; feel free to edit the idea as much as you want for your entry.

Fork In the Path

Sometimes one must reflect on where they are and how they got there. Small happenstances, choices, and dumb luck add up, and perhaps with just a slightly different permutation one’s life would be completely different. Investigate who or where your curio would be if their path had been altered.

Out of Your Element

Your curio goes on a mission with a skilled member of another Guild. During an attack or natural accident, the other Guild curio is hurt, killed, or trapped. Trouble is… the mission just got to the point where it calls for the decommissioned curio’s expertise. Depict your curio getting walked through the specialized task, trying to go through the other curio’s notes if they are no longer able to communicate, or just straight up winging it.

Malley the All Star

Malley has posted a bulletin and somehow everyone has got a hold of it. It’s clear to anyone that reads it that Malley is feeling a little left out. It seems like everyone he adventures with eventually moves on and starts doing other jobs not involving him. Could it be that he feels like he’s getting left behind and not making any big breakthroughs with the Guild? Put on a fake mission (with or without help) with the intent of making him feel like the hero of the hour!

Think of the Children

Orphans! There are unfortunately many of them in the hostile world of Scatterstar. Youths with parents and extended family eaten by monsters often end up being raised in one of the many orphanages in the big cities. Given the highly social and communal colonies curios live in, it's not such a bad life! Still, these youths enjoy having role models to look up to. Curios are welcome to volunteer with kits of all ages .... If they dare. Do not forget that curios too young to have beads can sometimes cause poltergeist-like activities, and are overall a handful. Depict curio vs baby in this very wholesome prompt.

Live or Die Trying

In a remote region of the Isles, a curio is bound to encounter some strange life forms, whether they’re looking for it or not. During one such encounter a curio notices a bizarre and unique trait this monster possesses and realizes, in the name of science, the beast must be caught. Alive. Using only the resources at hand and while protecting themselves from the beast, have your curio attempt to capture it relatively unharmed.

Roundup

The lost plains are home to the majority of the Isle’s breeding nyk-nykas. Used for everything from milk, fiber, meat, beast of burden, and entertainment, these animals are big business. And that means they’re prime targets for rustlers. Curios are often called upon to form posses and take back the animals. Be warned! Rustlers living primarily in the wilds are as mean as they come. They’ve been known to even snack on other curios! But these could also be wild rumors spread by angry farmers. Who is to say? Your curio of course! Round up those stolen nyk-nykas and combat the rustlers.

Jay and Community Service

So the rumors are true and Jay is working off his community hours with the Archaeologist’s Guild. What may come as a surprise is this white collar entertainment man is putting in the work. It’s clear the higher ranking Guild members don’t take him very seriously and like to assign him hard labor just to see if he’ll do it or break. He seems to just take it. Note how he flinches when he hears a loud bang or can be seen with a very large, imposing (and well paid) curio somewhere in the area. Also note how he seems to be seeking out Anya with a long list of proposals and ideas… huh. What is there for a curio to do besides add to the workload, pitch in, or accidentally startle this former celebrity (and that big body guard…)? Might be a good time to unload some negative feelings about that terrible party too.

No Time to Waste

An expedition team composed of younger members accidentally strays into the dangerous mountain region. They manage to radio in an SOS before a freak snowstorm blows through and leaves them unable to contact base. All Journeymen and above curios in the area are called upon to help form a rescue party. With little time to prepare, some teams are only a few curios strong. Others are going in solo. Time is of the essence as the stranded team is exposed to the harsh elements. Will they be found, and if so, in what condition?

What Happens In the Dark

It started as rumors spread among local kids, but when a renowned dirt scientist went missing while taking samples from the local caves… Well, Wellstone knew they had a real problem on their hands. The investigation starts with the rumors. Kids claim there are ghosts in the caves that will drag you to the bowels of the earth. They even dare one another to go into the caves and recite the Sixth Sense’s nursery rhyme. None of the kids have been reported missing, however. It’s possible it’s unrelated… but upon visiting the scene of the crime, spooky things begin to happen. Pale figures spotted in the caves. Guild curios leaving reports of vicious attacks by unknown curio sized monsters. Someone has to get to the bottom of this!

Master Challenges

Spring Prompt: The Legend of Hurricane's Shrine

Prizes: Sailfin Peekadee, Shimmering Vial, Puzzle Box

Innumerable tales of pirate's gold and sunken treasure can be found along the coasts of Scatterstar. But on a little island off of Jun Nazu, a very.... eclectic group of amateur archaeologists have been hunting the Hurricane's legendary hoard. Deep in the sea-caves along Anvil Isle, they've found a once-lavish shrine to the old pirate Saint, with clues leading to just a taste of his secret stash of riches. However, the team also seems to have found their doom: excavation has caused the sea-cave to collapse, cutting off their exit and forcing rescuers to find another way inside. Due to the danger of exploring partially-underwater caves, only the best of the best have been dispatched to find these archaeologists before it's too late. There's also the matter of old traps left behind by the cunning Saint and his crew, many of which are still very much functional and deadly. But hey, if you survive this gauntlet then maybe you'll be the one to find the pirate's bounty along the way? They might even let you keep some of it!

Scatterstar is not without its problems, and when one gets too big, a call for aid is issued through the Guilds. Out-of-control monsters, natural disasters, unusual mysteries--it all happens eventually, and someone's gotta deal with it! Given the extreme danger involved with these incidents, only Master Rank and above curios are allowed to participate. They've become known colloquially as 'Master Challenges'.

How it works is simple: curios of Master Rank or higher must be depicted participating in the seasonal prompt. The curio's weapon tier is used to calculate a success chance. If the curio manages to land over 55+ 'damage', they will receive one of three prizes. This can be done once a week for three months. After the season has passed, a new scenario and prize pool will be put up. If a curio fails to land 55+ damage, they will receive a drop from the default table plus a material, just like a normal expedition.

For an entry to qualify, it must follow these rules:
  • Curio must be Master Rank or higher.
  • Curio must be depicted assisting in some way with the described problem.
  • Entry must meet all other expedition requirements.
  • Chance-altering items (such as the Lantern) have no effect on drop outcome.
  • Entry must be submitted using the correct form, or it will not be rolled.

You can submit your finished Master Challenge entries at the Master Challenge Turn-in thread using the form below.

  • Entry: [Link to your entry]
  • Focus Curio: [link to reg sheet]
  • Guest Curio(s): [link to reg sheets]
  • Area: [plains, forest, jungle, etc. relevant if you do < 55dmg]
  • Item Used: [item name + link to tracker + prize you're seeking. Will be used in the event of a failed hunt]
  • Apply Guild Bonus?: [Y/N, relevant if you do < 55dmg]
  • Token/EXP Total: [pick 1 and list total for that type only]
  • Weapon Level: [I, II, III - less than level II will have no chance at the required 55dmg!]

Additional Information

Seasons

Spring: March, April, May
Summer: June, July, August
Fall: September, October, November
Winter: December, January, February

Weeks are counted as Monday through Sunday (EST, rollover is at midnight). If you make an entry on Sunday of week 1, you could make week 2's entry on Monday.

Collaborations

  • Collabs are allowed but will be rolled based on the lowest available weapon level.
  • Both focus curios must be Master Rank or higher.
  • Both collaborators must not have made any other entries that week.
  • Both collaborators receive the same drop.
  • Collaborators cannot defer their roll; meaning if one person has already rolled that week but just wants to help someone else make their weekly roll, you cannot ask for your half to 'not count'. Everyone must be on the same page to keep things streamlined.
