Species Guide

Grimana

Grimana are the most humanoid appearing of grims. They have plantigrade legs. The range of appearance in their legs can range from human-like to more towards rabbits, raccoons, and other plantigrade animals. They have very short fur on their bodies. Sometimes they may have fur so short it merely resembles peach fuzz.  They are a little bit taller than grimbites, usually standing at somewhere between 5'6'' and 6'4''. They have 5 fingers and have what what we refer to as a 'merged' paw pad. It is a soft, smooth, velvety, and mostly flat membrane that allows grimana to channel and properly control certain forms of magic. It also allows them to handle delicate objects easier, as the membrane provides a better grip on objects. This even allows some grimana to be able to scale certain surfaces.

They do well with crafting, writing, and other intricate projects that involve their hands. Many grimana have hobbies such as sewing, knitting, and different forms of arts and crafts.

A grimana's star is placed on their chest. It is the center of their being and where they draw their potent magic abilities from. With their soul and their biological heart being so close to each other, grimana have the ability to hone major magics much easier than the other 2 grims species.

Their basic magic ranges from things such as the ability to bloom a flower or two, the ability to heal small wounds, create minorly enchanted objects, levitating small objects, and many more things.

The major magic of grimana outclasses any major magic a grimpup and grimbite could perform. While they can still summon weapons like the other two, grimana shine with the ability to control the elements. Grimana who hone their major magic abilities can rise an entire forest, rattle a mountain, move large bodies of water, and even bring something back from a near-death state. Rarer cases even report grimana having the ability to rip open time and space, but only for a moment.

...But such mighty magic still comes at a price.

Grimana tend to be physically more fragile than grimpups and grimbites. Though they may have powerful magic abilities, they can not repeatedly use them without consequence. Even grimana that are well experience with major magic can not perform the full extent of their power without becoming exhausted and needing a several day recoup time.

They also can not withstand physical injury that well. Grimana are capable of sustaining a few hits and recovering, but if this happens repeatedly and in a close enough time frame, then even grimana's ability to even perform magic will begin to dwindle. This is especially dangerous if a grimana is reckless with their major magic, as they could become injured while performing such draining spells.

Typically you will find grimana in libraries, researching their next new thing.  You may also find them going on somewhat risky travels to conduct research and attempt to quell their endless curiosities of the world around them. Usually they will have a grimbite companion with them for the journey...

Though, not all grimana will acknowledge their gentle physiology, as some grimana will even prefer to do life-threatening tasks such as deep sea diving, cave spelunking, mountain-climbing, and other things that are typically seen from grimbites.

Grimbites

Grimbites are bipedal, digitigrade creatures. Their legs are similar to dogs, cats, birds, etc. They are also more fluffier than grimana and a bit shorter than the average grimana. The shortest grimbites are somewhere around 4'11'' and 5'4'', while the tallest can even peak over some grimana at 5'9''.  Grimbites usually have 4 fingers (3 fingers and a thumb), and have regular animal-like paw pads with 'toe beans' that are thinner on their hands and thicker on their feet. The thicker paw pads on their feet are like this due to the rough terrain grimbites usually walk on or climb on. It's a protective sort of thing to prevent injury. Very rarely, some grimbites can have 5 fingers, these grimbites tend to be a bit better with delicate tasks and have better coordination.

Grimbites are excellent hunters- or were. Now-a-days grimkind doesn't need to rely on hunting, and so grimbites do best with things that let them get their excess energy out such as sports, playing, going on adventures (however big or small). Some grimbites use their natural strength and sharper claws to help in architect or carving arts.

Grimbites are the most active of the grims and are often seen wandering around for over 12-18 hours without tiring. They also tend to require less sleep for recovery and can still maintain high functions with just a mere 4-6 hours of rest. Many grimbites in grim society spend their time going around and assisting others due to their durability and energy. They are the ones carving out new paths in caves, diving to the depths of the reefs, climbing the highest of trees and mountains, and even daring to get close to active volcanoes. The star of the grimbite is on their belly, something that perhaps symbolizes their nature as once primal hunters with an insatiable hunger.

They are capable of withstanding many injuries that would severely injure or even kill other grims. Grimbites are also good at brushing off even extreme wounds. Though they are not immune to collapsing from exhaustion, their super strength seems to simply come from a higher pain tolerance. Not all grimbites possess it to such extremes, but approx. 95% of all grimbites have some form of higher pain tolerance and resilience compared to grimpups and grimana.

Grimbites seem to have a natural lack of fear and it shows, as they are more than eager to jump into what seems to be death wishes. However, not all grimbites have this boon. There are still many grimbites who are modest, shy, and even anxious. Not every grimbite goes on grand adventures, some are more than happy to just help around town or simply just provide their strength to their close ones.

They are less adept with magic compared to grimana and are only really capable of making small sparks or nudging objects a few inches. With a bit of practice though, a grimbite can master basic magic.

Grimbites are also able to understand grimpups' "language" more than a grimana. They are capable of parroting the grimpup's squeaks and chitters, but many prefer to just talk to the grimpups regularly. They are good translators for when grimana are not familiarized with grimpup gestures and mannerisms.

Grimpups

Grimpups are feral-appearing, quadruped creatures. They have fur that can range from short to something like a pomeranian dog. They are the smallest of the species, but still have the capabilities of being quite large (up to 2 1/2 feet/76 cm or even 3 ft/91cm). They have paw pads that are soft and puffy like marshmallows, they have no toe beans. They have these big puffy paw pads to help them land from high places safely, as well as give them an extra spring in their step or leap when they run. Grimpups' star is on their forehead, which may explain their high intelligence despite their appearance as feral-like creatures.

Grimpups lack the ability to speak like grimbites or grimana, they usually communicate with chitters, barks, squeaks, growls, etc.  but they are by no means less intelligent because of this. Grimpups are capable of understanding complex theorems and having their own scientific studies and advancements that provide much use to grims society. Some grimpups have the ability to use a form of telepathy to communicate, but this is only if the other grim they are with knows them well and has a connection to them.

It is more common for grimbites and grimpups to travel together than grimpups and grimana. This is because grimbites naturally have the ability to understand grimpups a little. It also is not nearly as difficult for a grimbite to learn grimpups' 'language' and communicate with them, which makes forging bonds and telepathy much easier.

For most grimpups though, they prefer to use other means of communications like gesturing or carrying around a sort of tablet. Grimpups may also have a grimbite companion travel with them to help translate. Few grimpups have grimana companions, but it is possible for grimana to understand grimpups if they study the grimpup 'language' enough and form a bond with the grimpup.

Grimpups are typically seen, well, anywhere in Magni! They are highly adaptable to their surroundings and are able to adjust to any change or climate. Some grimpups work with adventurering grimbites and grimana, while other grimpups are renowned scientists or teachers. Much of grim society has adapted for grimpups to live and function as comfortably as grimana and grimbites, so they are treated equally and given much respect.

Grimpups are not capable of strong magic, and to even have basic magic is a rare feat. for a grimpup. Their abilities lie more in their mixture of intelligence and mild durability. This isn't to say that grimpups can not learn magic, it is just far more unusual to see a grimpup levitating a grimbite for messing up their coffee order compared to the other two grims species.  When grimpups are able to learn magic, they have abilities to affect space and time for brief blips. Rather, it is better described as merely 'peering into another universe for moments at a time.' Grimpups with this ability are the reason why some human culture objects have appeared in Magni and influenced grims' cultures. They're also responsible for... some less helpful things.
