Founding...

In the year 904, a great storm washed the Metara's Grace away from the rest of its fleet in Shell Colony. By a stroke of good fortune, it washed ashore on an unclaimed beach.

Hatterne, its captain, set forth. She planted her flag in the dirt, and claimed the land as her own. Through clever ingenuity and inventions, she brought prosperity and success to Ink. Her legacy lives on today as the name of the great river Ink rests against.

Geography...

A dry, empty wasteland. Years of dumping waste and materials in the land nearby has left Ink's homeland devoid of life and animals, with only parched, tiny grasses surviving. The ground is not baked clay or hardened - the Hatterne River prevents that - but the grass is rough and uneven.

Cutting through the barren landscape is the Hatterne, an enormous, pitch-black river. Polluted by manganese and Ink's byproducts it is undrinkable and smells foul. Aaxe, Ink's capital, is at a distance enough that it's barely noticeable.

Aaxe itself is a monstrous sprawl, dwarfing even Phytomea in size. The clang of machinery and construction is constant.

Lush wetlands surround the Agricultural Outpost, where most of Ink's food is produced. The water is generally unclean and salty, but provides ample nutrients and moisture for the genetically-engineered crops grown there.

Religion...

Most individuals in Ink are atheists - not merely nonchalant about gods or having lost them, but fully convinced they never existed in the first place.

There are still small, centralized places of worship, and oral myths, but many archives and written texts have been lost over the years in wars with Rain. There are no official clergy positions, and even keeping up with religion in one's pasttime is looked down upon.

They have retained only scraps of godnames, mispronounced and misattributed. Their retellings are somewhat accurate in events, but miss important details, identifiers, and mix up gods. Many contradict one another.

Allies

No colonies are Ink's allies, as they prioritize self-sufficiency. They do not trade, either, keeping their technological advancements close to their chests, and producing the food and resources their colony might need themselves.

Adversaries

Rain Colony. Though no one remembers why the colonies split apart, both know that they were once unified - and had been squabbling over control of the other ever since. Both were aggressive, and instigated many wars, battles, raids, and conflicts over the years.

The Hatterne especially was a point of contention, as both colonies laid claim to it, central to both cultures. It was often a demilitarized zone, too tense to support any constant defense by either side.

Still, no one expected Tinte to massacre Rain. In some sense, having an eternal rival gave many Inkians purpose.
