The River Kingdom
Southern Pyrrhia
Riverterras are the smallest of the Terrawings. They are found wherever freshwater is nearby and are the most territorial of the Terrawings, giving them a reputation for being a nuisance among the Pyrrhian tribes. The majority of Riverterras still live outside of their kingdom, refusing to move from the forests many generations have called home.

ANATOMY
Riverterras have a short, stocky body that allows them to traverse terrestrial and aquatic environments with ease. They have short, powerful legs with large, webbed paws for swimming and burrowing. Long tails help propel them through the water. Their scales can be smooth or bumpy, though tend to get larger and more jagged as an individual ages. Some Riverterras interpret damage to their back plating as a sign of survival - something to take great pride in. Riverterras remain small their entire lives - there is not a significant difference in size between young adult and senior Riverterras, unlike the other tribes.
Horns
Fire
Riverterras are capable of breathing fire. However, it is less powerful than Pyrrhian and Quaketerran fire. It is most efficient for quick, short-distance bursts of flame. Like the Mudwings, Riverterras instead are capable of holding their breath underwater for several hours.
Flight
Riverterras are the only Terrawings capable of flying throughout their entire adult lives. Short, rounded wings grant Riverterras swift take-offs and agility while in the air. Combined with their small size, Riverterras excel at flying through forests, a feat shared only with the Rainwings. Riverterras are moderately fast in the air with average endurance.
Colors
Riverterras typically have darker colors and strong countershading to blend in with their environments. For added camouflage, most Riverterras have patterned scales. Vibrant accent colors are usually found on lateral and lower surfaces of the body. Like Quaketerras, Riverterras may paint their scales for self-expression or to indicate high status. Eyes can be any color.

Uncommon Traits
Nose Horn: Some Riverterras will have a horn protruding from the top of their beak. The size and shape of this horn varies between individuals.
Inverse Shading: A Riverterra has pale dorsal coloration and dark ventral coloration.
Rare Traits
Multiple Horns: Extra sets of horns growing from the head. These are much larger than prongs.
Diet
Riverterras are opportunistic omnivores: for a Riverterra, nothing is off the menu. They are active hunters, foragers, and scavengers, and will often create food stores to last them during the winter season. Their diet consists of fish, crustaceans, mollusks, vertebrates, fruits, vegetables, and carrion. Proud hunters will typically keep parts of their best kills, such as pelts, antlers, and skulls.
Range
While searching for a home, a Riverterra will find a source of water first, then look at the surrounding land for suitable territory. Riverterras are most common in temperate forests, wetlands (swamps, marshes, etc), rainforests, grasslands, and mountains. There are only a few places Riverterras avoid: the frigid lands of the Ice Kingdom, the arid dunes of the Sand Kingdom, and the salty seas of the Sea Kingdom.

SOCIETY
Naming
Riverterras can have simple one-word or compound two-word names. In compound names, it is common to have one part named after an animal, plant, or nonliving element of their habitat and another part named after a significant trait or ability they possess. It is also common for a Riverterra to acquire the second half of their name later in life, signifying a great achievement or distinguishing feature about the individual.

Homes
Riverterras are excellent burrowers. Once a den is constructed, the surrounding land and resources will become the individual's territory. Riverterras are a stubborn tribe - it is difficult to move a Riverterra out of their territory, especially one that has been maintained for generations. Riverterras may live alone, in pairs, or in larger family or friend groups. Riverterras living together will connect their burrows in an underground tunnel system. Some Riverterras are a little more nomadic, like their sister tribes, and will make temporary dens that only last a couple seasons or years.
Riverterras are no exception from a dragon's love for trinkets. They often accessorize with trophies of their travels - animal pelts, feather earrings, leather pouches, and jewelry of bones or smoothed river rocks. Riverterra dens will often have rooms dedicated to storing their valuables.
Nesting
Riverterras tend to become especially territorial when starting a new family. It's best to leave a pair alone - it is not uncommon for parents and other family memebrs to drive off unfamiliar Riverterras if eggs are incubating. The nest is well-hidden, either nestled deep underground in the main den or in a separate den entirely. Parents, regardless of sex or gender, share the responsibilities of defending the nest, incubating the eggs, and raising young. Each clutch has 1-5 eggs. Riverterras practice monogamy, though the bond is not always lifelong and may only last until the offspring are grown. Pairs who stick together after raising a clutch will often return to the same place to nest again.
Since the establishment of the River Kingdom, many pairs have moved in to raise their hatchlings in safety, only to move back to their homes outside of the Kingdom once the offspring are deemed strong enough to survive outside of it.
THE RIVER KINGDOM
Central City
Their recently established Kingdom lies along the eastern edge of the Claws of the Clouds Mountains and northwest of the Rainforest Kingdom. A wide river flows from the mountains into foothills, floodplains, and sparse deciduous forests. Above ground, a dragon will find a few dens and farmland, but the majority of the Kingdom lives and works underground. In the center of the Kingdom is a distinct main entrance leading into a massive cavern, illuminated by torchlight that reflects off of small waterfalls and soft mosses. It is the center of Riverterra activity.
Large, wide tunnels burrow further into the earth, leading to markets, libraries, and other public areas. The Royal Palace is directly connected to this central cavern. Even further out are personal dens for Riverterras living in the city, which have both above-ground and below-ground entrances.

Royal Succession
Within the royal line, heirs to the throne choose if they want to try and rule in the future or step down from the possibility at 4 years old. If they wish to rule, the dragonet will go through various trials and additional training as they age, hosted by the Queen's council. These trials are physical, mental, and behavioral. Heirs who pass can then face off in more challenging tasks and must be 12 years old before they can challenge the Queen. She can either step aside or face the heir in a non-fatal battle. If the heir wins, the former Queen joins the council to judge future heirs. If the Queen passes away, her partner or the most successful heir will take the throne.
