Clothing Style

Dar’Kenai tends to wear a rather business casual style that blends classic lab worker attire with a more sci-fi flare. He often dresses in primarily silver or white outfits with black, green, or blue accents, or when in the field he will wear primarily black and silver outfits with similar accents instead. He often wears high collared shirts of varying sleeve length depending on the weather along with a jacket or a vest if outdoors. He tends to wear coordinating pants that aren't too casual but also not too dressy and are comfortable to move around in when he's working on his projects, and his shoes tend to follow the same trend. Dar’Kenai prefers to have a clean and simple look while never compromising his comfort and mobility, since he tends to be on the move or traveling often. While in formal presentations, his outfits will be a little dressier than business casual, but while in the field he'll usually dress more casually (although he always still looks well put together).

His earrings are usually silver, and he frequently wears a headset or earpiece to keep in communication with others. He almost always is wearing a wrist communicator for other functions that tap into his Tek rifting. His gloves are usually white or silver depending on the color scheme of his outfit, and he wears a small pendent that is in the shape of the MC*Corp. logo.

Personality

Dar’Kenai is an optimistic and inventive engineer/inventor with a brilliant and innovative mind. He is very creative and curious, and he enjoys exploring new topics and working through challenges and puzzles on the path to finding new solutions that can benefit society as a whole. He is always eager to take risks and think outside the box, and he's never one to back down from thinking through difficult problems or finding ways to optimize current solutions. His work and projects tend to keep him very busy or on-the-move depending on what his goals currently are, and he prefers to be working on some kind of task at all times rather than having idle time. Although he can sometimes be a touch intimidating to talk to due to his intellect, he's a kind and down to earth person that's easy to approach. He is a little socially awkward simply because he's spent most of his life working on his inventions/company and not much interacting with others outside of a professional setting, but he genuinely tries his best to be friendly and connect with those willing to meet him halfway.

Despite seeming like a typical intellectual and a bit awkward socially at times, Dar’Kenai is anything but shy and does best in social situations that are more professional in nature. He is very open and at ease when speaking to associates and customers, and it's very obvious in how he speaks how much of a deep passion his has for his work. He is confident, headstrong, and never afraid to make mistakes or push the envelope. He also has a very strong sense of justice and wishes to improve the lives of as maybe people as he can, hoping his work will touch the lives of everyone on Crystaless and be able to improve them or ease their troubles even a little with his inventions. However, Dar’Kenai can get a little too overzealous about his work at times, especially with his very hands-on attitude about his work. He prefers to work on his projects as directly as possible and dislikes feeling any disconnect between the products his company puts out and either his or his sister's input. He also doesn't like the idea that he should leave "menial" tasks to others when he could easily do them himself, which causes problems sometimes since quite a few people in the corporation, including his sister, advise him to take a step back and let others handle things sometimes.

Backstory

Dar’Kenai grew up with his older sister, Mil'Kesta, raising him after their parents died shortly after Dar’Kenai‘s birth from a Clone attack. The two lived in Factesk where both of them learned engineering from their parents' colleagues, and Dar’Kenai was known as a prodigy in math and electronic sciences, especially with his natural knack for Tek rifting. Even at a young age, Dar’Kenai was always building things and inventing new devices, many of which were beyond what even the senior engineers could imagine. The lab workers praised the boy's creativity and eagerness to try new tactics no matter how outlandish.

Together Dar’Kenai and Mil'Kesta ended up creating their own independent technology business, their claim to fame coming from their revolutionary designs for hover technology, which ended up improving previous air/spacecraft all across Crystaless. With their inventions being used in nearly every region, their business boomed and they became richer than even some royalty of the planet. Dar’Kenai and his sister only used their wealth to upgrade their lab facilities, improve conditions for their workers, and work toward even bigger and better inventions. Dar’Kenai was known as the most successful businessman in Crystaless before he reached his teen years.

One of the company's newer and most successful projects was the creation of Air Mechs, which were personal vehicles catered to individuals and their rifting network to better coordinate the rider and the machine. Over the years their business built a city on an island they owned, which eventually became Air City, a testing zone for the Mechs where people from all walks of life were invited to in order to experiment with the coordination between rider and vehicle. MC*Corp. sent out invitations to all corners of Crystaless, seeking out all types to ensure that the Mechs could accommodate anyone. All residents of Air City have their living expenses covered by the company and are granted free Mechs as long as they cooperate with testing procedures.

Before Air City's completion, Dar’Kenai and Mil'Kesta got involved in the mayhem caused by the Dark Matter. Dar’Kenai was possessed while performing an evaluation of a large ship he developed as a prototype for flying cities, but he was freed when Mackerby Rainstle and his companions intervened. They encountered each other again after Dar’Kenai and his sister returned to Factesk, where Mil'Kesta was then possessed by the Dark Matter and subsequently liberated by Mac. The two made it a point to invite Mac and Mara to Air City once construction and preparations were completed.

Due to his very involved nature in his work, Dar’Kenai was very social and interactive with all the residents of Air City once it opened. He ended up making many friends, something he wasn't particularly accustomed to due to how busy he was with his previous work, and his invitation to Mac and Mara ended up saving his island project when Shaderesk Demrile attacked. Dar’Kenai continues the development and improvement of the Mech along with coming up with new inventions and advances for Crystaless technology.

Trivia:

  • Dar’Kenai‘s original concept was, like the majority of the other characters in the Savior Son series, another "puffball" person since the story was originally based in a modified Kirby universe. He was a brown colored Kirby (based on the brown color palette from Kirby Air Ride on the Gamecube) and named Choco, since he looked like a little chocolate ball. A few other colored puffballs were also named after food, like Marsh (based on the white Kirby looking like a marshmellow) and Melony (yellow and melon).
    • After all my "puffball" characters were redesigned to be humanoid after taking the story out of the Kirby fan-world I had made so it would be an original setting instead, his name was initially changed to Chalco (like the surname) since it was similar to Choco and I obviously didn't want to keep his name just as Choco since that sounds more like a name for a pet than a person.
    • Later on I determined I wasn't fond of Chalco being his first name and shifted it into his last name instead as Chalcolest. His next name, Darke Chalcolest, was obviously a play on "dark chocolate" just like the rest of his family's names were too. (Milkesta, Wyatt, and Coco are like milk chocolate, white chocolate, and cocoa)
    • So no, his name is not like that because he has "dark skin," it's just a dorky pun based on his previous design.
    • Eventually I got tired of wondering if this was offensive or not after thinking about it and decided to change their names again. Darke and Milkesta along with their mother, Coco, took on different first names (Dar’Kenai, Mil’Kesta, and Ko’Kodala respectively) to distance them more from being obvious puns about chocolate. I also returned to my original plan of changing his name to Chalco by changing their last name from Chalcolest to just Chalco. I feel a lot better about this change and hope I can adjust to it all over again. ^^;
  • Ironically, Dar’Kenai isn't all that fond of chocolate as a food. He doesn't dislike it, but it's not his favorite and he actually prefers savory foods over sweet ones. If he has to choose sweet foods or candy, he's more likely to pick something fruity over chocolatey.
    • He does end up eating chocolate rather regularly since Mil'Kesta and Violet love chocolate, so it's usually offered to him.
  • Dar’Kenai enjoys being in the field more often than being in the labs, despite the fact that he's much more "at home" in the labs. He simply likes the change of environment and putting himself out of his comfort zone.
    • Unfortunately he's a little sensitive to some of the outdoor elements just because he's not used to being outside that often.
    • His skin is a little sensitive, and he sunburns rather easily, so he tends to keep himself shaded when possible or apply a lot of sunblock.
  • During his childhood, he'd often be underestimated or treated less seriously by adults despite his intellect and the brilliance in his work. Although he doesn't encounter it much anymore since his company and his "young genius" image are so well known know, but he still tends to work even harder to promptly prove any doubters wrong.
  • His idle time is usually spent thinking about his projects or coming up with the next big thing for his labs to work on. He usually appears to space out when waiting for things since he occupies his mind with work thoughts, so sometimes it takes a little more effort to get his attention while he's focused on his thoughts.
  • Dar’Kenai cares very deeply for his associates and workers and does whatever he can to keep working conditions safe and up to date.
    • Loyal workers are offered many benefits and can be comfortable with job stability. Dar’Kenai is also an understanding person and doesn't focus on profit margins over the wellness of either the employees or the consumers.
    • That being said, he does not tolerate poor work ethic and will not allow slackers to take advantage of his generosity. He's patient and understanding with people who may be having a rough period of their life, but he does not tolerate blatant laziness or negligence if it may put others at risk.
  • Dar’Kenai is quite worldly when it comes to tackling new projects that involve new people or cultures, and he'll do ample research to ensure he's building toward as many of his clients and potential customers as possible, which includes researching the cultures and vernacular of different regions and creating different versions of his products to suit those areas.
    • Despite this, he's much less in the loop about other non-job related topics like knowing what music is popular or what's "hip and happening" with people in his age group.
  • Dar’Kenai doesn't get hung up on being cost efficient or making the most profit since customer satisfaction and creating the most useful tools possible is his top business priority.
    • The way that Crystaless society is structured also means that money isn't really a vital part of business anyway, since most settlements are self-sufficient or work to be mutually beneficial toward each other. Although it took a lot of work for MC*Corp to get off the ground, it's become so big and successful that their work and jobs are well integrated into the more modern settlements across Crystaless, so they can afford to work toward innovation rather than pure profit (since profit doesn't really mean anything in the end).
  • Since the crime rate on Crystaless is remarkably low compared to its size and population, Dar’Kenai can also afford to have faith in the good ethics and moral nature of the Bellinans he markets toward.
    • However, this doesn't mean his products don't sometimes get misused, usually by Clones, and nothing breaks his heart more than seeing his creations used to do anything other than good.
  • Since Dar’Kenai has been building his corporation since he was rather young, he did miss out on a great deal of his childhood and is somewhat unfamiliar with many childhood traditions or experiences that most people have. Despite having very strong professional social skills and being a generally friendly and welcoming person to both his colleagues and his clients, Dar’Kenai is a bit awkward when put into more "friendly" situations, meaning he's not entirely sure how to act around people he ought to have platonic relationships with.
    • He's even more oblivious about romantic relationships and hasn't even considered it yet, so flirts tend to go completely over his head most of the time and overly forward or suggestive people tend to make him very uncomfortable.
    • He's also not very used to close contact with other people aside from his sister, so he tends to hesitate or freeze up when contact goes further than a simple handshake. He usually goes completely rigid if someone hugs him and he either doesn't reciprocate or takes a long while to do so.
    • He doesn't mean to come off as awkward or cold in his mannerisms, but he doesn't have enough real experience with interacting with friends for his reactions to come naturally yet.
  • Dar’Kenai somewhat dislikes how protective others tend to be of him, particularly his older sister and many of his employees, for with him being the founder and head executive of the most successful company on Crystaless, he has become the target of a number of ill-intending groups.
    • Dar’Kenai of course loves to be independent and doesn't like having a swath of bodyguards following him when he's out in the field, particularly when he's working in Air City.
    • He and Mil'Kesta tend to butt heads at times in regards to Dar’Kenai‘s safety protocol, but the two love and appreciate each other more than anyone, especially since they're the only family they have left.
  • He's pretty oblivious about flirting and doesn't really seem aware of how much Violet has a crush on him. He just knows they've been close friends for years and considers her as a dear friend. He's not necessarily opposed to considering her in a romantic manner, he just hasn't actually thought about it.
    • He's also pretty oblivious to the amount of chemistry he seems to have with Char, but that doesn't seem to bother Char much because he also barely seems to notice how much supposed "sexual tension" is observed to be between them by others. Char just really likes him and doesn't realize some of his behavior is seen to be very flirty and forward. Dar’Kenai can sometimes be flustered by it, but it's not because he thinks it's flirting; he just isn't used to intimate and personal interactions/relationships in general.
  • Dar’Kenai‘s personal Mech is a Tek-based Jetster hoverboard. It's has relatively average speed and handles very smoothly, yet it's designed to easily take flight and instantaneously rocket into high speeds when the board goes aerial (meaning the distance between it and the surface its hovering over increases to a certain amount). Dar’Kenai is also capable of easily overriding its default settings and adjusting its limits while in use through his rifting.
    • The Jetster's general design and key traits are based off the Jet Star vehicle from Kirby Air Ride, which is the vehicle I always picked for the brown colored Kirby palette.
  • Dar’Kenai and Steve were actually childhood friends when they both lived in Factesk, although they hadn't seen each other in years when Steve was later assigned to monitor Air City with his Missionary team. Steve used to sometimes help Dar’Kenai with some of his earliest inventions, but he never really knew much about engineering. He typically would use his Steyl rifting to help Dar’Kenai shape metal parts he needed.
  • Dar’Kenai has a rather low pain tolerance, although he’s usually level headed enough to not make too much of a fuss if possible. He has better pain tolerance for hand injuries simply because he builds and works with his hands a lot, so they aren’t as sensitive compared to other parts of him.
  • He also doesn’t handle the sight of blood well at all. He can handle small things like little cuts from work or the like, but if an injury is serious enough that blood starts dripping, Dar’Kenai will likely freeze up and be too frazzled to do anything. He would probably faint upon seeing any serious, bloody injury.
  • Old Charahub blurb: "The young prodigy of Bellinan technology that revolutionized modern travel and industry by founding the most successful company on Crystaless."
