Clothing Style

Hurricane tends to dress in the typical style for his tribe, which includes all handmade garments, many of which are made of or include leather. Since the weather is usually rather warm, he almost always wears sleeveless tops and/or vests along with shorts and leather boots. His outfits usually have a lot of light brown from the leather with the traditional patterned accent designs shown in many of the Soratan Wolves' clothing or clothwork, which most consist of purple-dyed leather or cloth with yellow/gold symbols embroidered on. Some of his clothing will include fringe, but he usually opts for simpler outfits when going out to explore. He almost always wears a leather purple and yellow patterned headband along with a gold armband with the symbol of the Cloudline family engraved on it. Inside the armband are multiple tiny tubes set into a hidden maze of sorts, and it can only be unlatched using Ayr rifting to go through the tubes, and obviously only members of the Cloudline family are taught the specific way to open it.

Personality

Hurricane is a headstrong and rebellious young warrior of the Sorata Wolves who always seeking thrills. He can be confident to the point of being cocky, and he's typically irreverent and believes himself outside the standard rules set for those around him. He has issues with following orders or respecting authority, and he often just does whatever he wants and rarely thinks too far ahead about the consequences. When things go completely wrong for him, he has a habit of getting very defensive and often skirts his responsibilities, although he is capable of facing certain serious subjects with the proper respect. His curiosity is insatiable and frequently gets him into trouble when he overestimates his abilities and winds up in over his head. He's not afraid to take risks, and as irresponsible as he can be, he always is looking to improve his skills and better himself in any way he can.

He can be a bit teasing and sometimes a jerk toward his friends with his attitude, but he's still very loyal and protective nonetheless. He often gets his friends into trouble along with him when he doesn't think ahead, but he will do everything he can and even risk himself to get them out of any bad situations. Hurricane would never abandon any of his friends or allies, and his sense of honor will keep him from resorting to dirty tactics to overcome foes or even cheat his way into completing tasks. He might ignore tasks that don't interest him or don't seem valuable to him, but he'll never half-ass something once he actually starts it.

Hurricane's arrogance and cocky attitude is much more exaggerated in public than he would normally be in private. A lot of his rebellious actions seem to be a cry for attention since his relationship with his father is very strained, and he has no other family to tend to him. Hurricane tends to be loyal to those around him since he has a deep fear of abandonment, which have come up in his life when his mother died and when his older sister denounced their father and left the tribe. His feelings for his father are very conflicted, since he wants to respect and admire him and have a close relationship with him again, yet he is constantly frustrated by his father's cold nature and the way he's been leading the tribe. Hurricane may vent a lot about his father to his friends, but he is often too meek to actually bring up his feelings and concerns to him directly out of fear of losing him in his life completely. In general, Hurricane doesn't like talking about his father or hearing others bring him up in conversations, especially if anyone speaks ill of him. Their interactions tend to be very tense, and neither of them are very good at properly communicating with each other. Although Hurricane is rather uncooperative with him, likely to get his attention in the first place, the few times that his father actually takes the time to mentor him or give advice, Hurricane does listen wholeheartedly.

Backstory

Hurricane was born and grew up in a tribe of Ayr rifting wolves on Sorata, the clan known as the Lupatyn Wolves. His father, Dusk Cloudline, was the chieftain of the tribe, and during Hurricane's early childhood the tribe grew larger and stronger than ever under his leadership, leading the clan into a golden age where they claimed the majority of Sorata's ranges as their tribe-lands. For as long as Hurricane can remember, their tribe was known as the Sorata Wolves, which is a name they took on instead considering that they were now more powerful and far reaching than any other Soratan tribe.

However, when Hurricane was still young, his mother passed away from illness, and his father became colder and emotionally closed off to everyone. His spirit seemed to have died with her, and his conquest of the other lands came to a screeching halt. Although the clan maintained their vast lands, over the years the other tribes stopped fearing him and even mocked him for falling from grace. Hurricane never really understood what the rumors meant since he was too young to remember that golden age. He did however fall into a mild depression since his mother was no longer present, his father was no longer affectionate with anyone, and the relationship between his father and Hurricane's older sister, Darkova, was becoming incredibly strained. Hurricane still isn't sure why, but he remembers one day his sister vowed to become stronger so she could one day strike down their shameful chieftain and lead the clan herself before leaving Sorata.

Currently Hurricane is sixteen years old and a skilled warrior apprentice for the clan, albeit a somewhat arrogant one. Although he's at the top of his class, he frequently frustrates his mentors due to his irreverent and irresponsible behavior. Hurricane finds most of his training boring and sees no point to the mundane tasks assigned to the apprentices, and he frequently shirks his assignments to explore the Expanse behind his mentors' backs.

His relationship with his father has become very complicated over the years, and the two have become even more distant from each other. Hurricane often scoffs at how his father doesn't do anything impressive anymore or lead the Wolves in more conquest like he's heard about in stories of the recent past. However, it's clear he still wants to have a good relationship with him considering how defensive/aggressive he gets with anyone else who talks about his father in such a way. Hurricane seems to be channeling his frustrations through his rebellious behavior and dismissal of his boring training. He wants nothing more to learn directly from his father, the undisputed strongest member of the clan and his greatest role model, despite how much he'd deny it if asked by anyone else.

Trivia:

  • Like his sister Darkova, Hurricane was thought up by a friend of mine from 5th grade who used Darkova (or Dark Cloud, as she was named initially) as her persona of sorts when we would act out fantasy adventures on the playground during recess. Hurricane only appeared once in a small comic that she drew as a gift to me. He was Darkova's younger brother who had too much energy and was extremely volatile with manipulating the weather, like his name suggested.
    • His current version is my own independent creation, since he didn't have any other development to work off of.
    • His first name is obviously the same as it was originally, and their last name of Cloudline came from Darkova's original name, Dark Cloud. Cloudline is a mild play on the notion of clouds having a silver lining.
  • Hurricane initially was going to be just as minor as he was in his original form, since I imagined the story of the Sorata Wolves would be from Darkova's narrative as the protagonist. However, following a short story I wrote about him and the tribe for a writing workshop event during high school, I decided to expand on this story instead and use him as the protagonist.
    • His first use in writing by me was in a short little bit that took place after Darkova returned to the tribe and their conflict was resolved. He accompanied her to the grave of one of her recently departed friends and was shocked to see him crawling back out of the dirt a few minutes into his and Darkova's conversation about him.
  • Hurricane's name definitely influenced the names of his two best friends, Katryna and Andrue, which were the two "worst" hurricanes that popped up when searching for hurricane names to use years ago; the spelling has just been altered slightly.
  • Since Hurricane was born after his father returned from the Expanse, he doesn't really know the extent of trauma that his father faced during those years lost from the tribe. In his mind, his father always seemed relatively stable and down to earth, so his shift back to his cold and harsh demeanor following Gale's death came as very unexpected and uncharacteristic to Hurricane.
    • Darkova claimed that she remembers how unstable and erratic their father was when he first returned, so she told Hurricane that he was never really kind like he "pretended" to be while settling down. Hurricane doesn't believe her though and thinks their father is just in a weird place in life.
  • He has a habit of teasing Andrue a lot and calling him a pansy for being so cautious all the time.
    • Of course, Hurricane is nonetheless protective of Andrue when things get serious.
    • He's also very aware of how Andrue tends to suffer from rifting-overload easily and tends to keep an eye on him to make sure he's not overexerting himself.
    • He also softens up a lot on Andrue and eases back on teasing him after Hurricane's reckless behavior gets Andrue kidnapped by a Gryphonic rogue.
  • Although he doesn't specifically refer to Arrow as an uncle, Hurricane does internally consider him to be something like an uncle. At the very least, Arrow is definitely part of the Cloudline family, and Arrow also tends to me much more supportive and gentler than Hurricane's father, so Hurricane often goes to him for emotional support instead.
  • His room tends to have a lot of furnishings with fur included in it, all from various hunts from the tribe. Since Hurricane is the son of the chieftain, he has a lot of nice things in his room, and most of the fur blankets, rugs, etc in his room (and all across his home for that matter) are from only the most impressive beasts slain on the tribe hunts.
  • His favorite scent seems to be lavender, which he usually smells a lot on the various fabrics in his home and on his clothes.
    • One of the tribe members, a woman named Breeze Rainhart, tends to handle washing fabrics in the tribe for those who don't have time to handle it themselves, so she ends up doing a lot of laundry for the chieftain's household. She grows lavender plants around the pond/stream where she does the laundry, and she often uses them to further freshen the fabrics.
    • Hurricane never really talks to her directly since she prefers to keep to herself, but if asked he would say she's a valuable member of the tribe and has a solid respect for her.
  • The signature skill of the Cloudline family is their ability to manipulate clouds with unmatched precision. It's uncommon knowledge that most Ayr rifters cannot effectively manipulate clouds since they are made of water vapor, so they would also have to be Watyr rifters to move them with a lot of control. The Cloudline ancestors were known for demonstrating their skill in Ayr rifting by effectively manipulating clouds without the use of Watyr rifting.
    • Hurricane is obviously meant to learn this skill, and while he's gotten at least better than proficient with it so far, he's a bit frustrated at his lack of progress since his father hasn't been mentoring him much in the past years.
    • Arrow has mentored him for many other skills aside from the ones taught in lessons for all apprentices, but obviously since Arrow isn't of the Cloudline clan, he does not know the technique and cannot teach him.
  • Hurricane considers the Tyroon family to be somewhat of his "new family" now, since he tends to spend the most time with them and they've basically taken him in after his mother passed away and his father fell into his depression. Even though Hurricane obviously doesn't live with them, he does feel at home with them and would probably consider Katryna and Andrue as his siblings if he wasn't low-key crushing on both of them.
    • He's not entirely sure what either of them would say about it, but Hurricane is sort of hoping he won't have to choose between them and can just have them both in the future.
    • Katryna and Hurricane are a little more obvious about their crushes on each other, but they still don’t admit it to anyone else or even to each other. When they get a little older though, they’re more comfortable with being more openly affectionate with each other and even start a physical relationship more readily.
    • Andrue and Hurricane on the other hand are much more low-key and even wishy washy about their feelings toward each other, and both are a little oblivious to the other liking them back. Katryna is aware that Andrue likes Hurricane and sometimes gently prods Hurricane into thinking about the subject, but even she isn’t sure if Hurricane likes her brother back, mostly because she’s sure he likes her already. Hurricane is kind of under the impression Andrue might like him, but he’s not sure enough to actually act on his feelings as readily as he does with Katryna.
    • Hurricane thinks it’s all rather silly that both Katryna and Andrue are really indirect about asking which of them he likes, when Hurricane just assumes he has the option of having both of them at some point.
