Clothing Style

Kent tends to dress in warmer/bold colors while sticking with simple designs and practicality in clothing choice. While on duty as a guard, he wears the standard armor chest piece, shoulder plates, gauntlets, legguards, etc... the colors mostly consisting of silver, red, and black with a few blue crystal designs traditional of Crystaless. The uniform also includes of a sleeveless coat that folds closed in the front, and Kent also usually wears a light scarf/neck wrap if the day is cool enough for it.

When off duty, Kent tends to wear a tunic and pants with boots, along with a sleeveless coat that is rather similar to the one from his uniform, although it's a bit lighter and plainer. He still often wears a scarf/neck wrap, and in cooler weather he'll layer a long sleeve shirt under his tunic. In warmer weather he'll often roll up the long sleeves or simply not wear the extra layer at all. His earrings are all silver.

Personality

In his childhood, Kent was a confident and headstrong boy who was a natural leader when among his peers and sometimes came off as a bully to those weaker than him. Despite this, he was still a well behaved child around adults and knew when to take matters seriously, such as his studies and his eventual combat training, both of which he devoted his entire focus on. Kent was respectful toward elders and would willingly run errands or do favors for the other members of the village. He was very impressionable and tended to imitate his father's bossy and arrogant behavior, which led Kent to bullying Mackerby Rainstle in particular.

As an adult, Kent has remained a helpful and confident man, yet he's become much more humble and serious with age. Some might describe him as a bit of a stick in the mud, yet he's still well liked for his compassionate and protective nature. He tends to be very hard on himself for his mistakes though, something he rarely did as a child. He's had much time to reevaluate his behavior toward Mac and Mara and has become much more low key and unassuming around them. He often beats himself up for his immature treatment toward them, and although they've both expressed they have no hard feelings toward him, Kent still isn't entirely willing to let his past actions go. Around Mac he wouldn't talk much and wasn't ever really sure how to interact with him, and Mac's unconditional friendliness toward him tended to make him feel worse about treating him poorly.

His relationship with Mara is a bit more normal, yet he still tends to be awkward about finding the right way to interact with her. Kent has had a crush on Mara since they were kids (which contributed to him bullying Mac since they were much closer), but he's not entirely sure about Mara's feelings toward Mac. Following Mac's death at the end of the First War, Kent resigned to never expressing his true feelings for her for years out of fear that it would be too insensitive or opportunistic of Mac's absence. Although Mara treats him like a normal close friend, Kent has trouble interpretting her feelings and tends to worry about being too forward with her. He comes off as rather serious and stoic around her, although she can sometimes fluster him with too much intimacy.

  • Instinctive, quick witted, and responsible

  • A bit of a workaholic and rarely makes time for himself

Backstory

Kent was born in Natiotre, but his family moved to Pullifilas rather early in his childhood. His mother was a seamstress and his father was a high ranked soldier of Crystaless and the newly transferred captain of the Pullifilas guards. Kent was brought up to be a disciplined and respectful boy that cared very much for the small, tight-knit community. However, his tendency to bully others came from imitating his father, who bossed around other soldiers at his whim. Kent noticed his father would often take out his frustrations by barking orders at the lower ranked guards, so Kent naturally picked up this behavior and let out his frustrations on weaker kids, specifically Mackerby Rainstle. His father would sometimes express his disapproval of allowing Mac and his mother to live in the village following the incident involving Vinia Demrile, so Kent treated Mac as an outcast and undesireable of sorts. Since Kent was well liked among his peers and seen as the unofficial leader of them, they also joined in with the bullying, which only affirmed his actions further. His frustrations also stemmed from the fact that his crush, Mara Magentis, always seemed much more interested in being friends with Mac than him, so Kent also held this bitterness against Mac. He tended to behave himself a bit better when Mara would defend Mac, although sometimes he'd simply make fun of her for hanging around such an outcast, likely in some vain hope she'd see things the way everyone else did someday.

After Mac and Mara started leaving the town on extensive adventures, Kent was able to mellow out and focus on his training and studies. During these years he also realized how petty his father's behavior was and how unfairly and cruelly he treated Mac for no real reason. He dedicated himself to his training to become a knight, and while some of his peers thought he was becoming somewhat of a stick in the mud with how focused and one-tracked he was about it, he still remained a respectful and helpful man that was well liked among the villagers. He determined that protecting the people of Crystaless was more important than the authority and power over others his father flaunted, and he was even more motivated to succeed following a Clone attack that left his father with a severe injury that forced him to retire.

Kent is currently a soldier of Crystaless and a relatively high ranked member of the Pullifilas guards. Following Mackerby Rainstle's death, Kent has taken up assisting his mother, Kira Rainstle, with whatever needs she may have in her mourning. When off duty he often visits her to offer any aid he can to her and Mara's sister, Mayra, while Mara is off on her own personal training mission. Kent feels as though he never had the chance to really make up to Mac about treating him so poorly during their childhood, despite the fact that Mac had willingly forgiven him a long time ago. Along with simply being fond of Kira as a neighbor, he also helps her since he can no longer do anything to make amends with her departed son.

Trivia:

  • In his original backstory, his parents were deceased and he lived with his aunt and uncle instead. He blamed Mac for their deaths because they were killed during the chaos wreaked while Vinia took control of him.
  • Kent had a couple girlfriends during his teen years and early adulthood, but he never really felt that connected with them. He wouldn’t say he had any serious problems with any of his previous relationships, and he’s still on good terms with most of them, but he didn’t particularly feel like there was any real spark with any of them.
    • He acknowledges his lingering feelings for Mara may have contributed to him not really feeling invested in his other relationships, but fortunately he had the consideration to break things off cleanly when he felt he wasn’t giving his then-girlfriends the devotion they deserved.
  • "Kent serves as a knight of Crystal Field and keeps watch over his hometown. His feelings for Mara have remained bottled up since the end of The First War, since he didn't feel that it would be a good idea to mention them after Mackerby Rainstle's passing, and when enough time had passed Kent believed Mara would never reciprocate his feelings since she was so occupied preparing for the resurrection. He and Mara grew further apart in the time between the wars, and its only recently that he's built up the nerve to express himself to her. However, with Mackerby's revival, Kent feels he's once again waited too long and continues to hide his feelings, believing himself far too inadequate for Mara in comparison."
  • Kent's name comes from two different points of inspiration: it first came from me misremembering a name from a book I only skimmed for illustrations. This book was The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells, and the character in the book was actually named Dr. Kemp rather than Kent. Later on, the name Kent came up to me again from the game, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, which came out a few years after I had already created and named my Kent. However, during my Kent's humanoid redesign years later, I did give him reddish hair in reference to the Kent from Fire Emblem.
