Personality


Sweet, kind, a little hard on herself. Saillym dreams of a world where she is front and center, where she has all the friends in the world and is never lonely. That isn't her reality, but it is her dream, and sometimes that's all she needs to keep going forward. People might call her an "air head," but it's only because she spends the majority of her time trying to spin interactions she has into the plot of a romance novel - she's not spacey, she's just trying to live outside her own reality.

History


Her mother was the only one able to grow any real crops for miles around. It was just an accepted fact - if you wanted crop, you had to import or buy from Momma Clague. They say the ground was fed by the tears of those left behind, but Saillym doesn't remember ever seeing Momma cry. It was just the two of them in the house, as long as she could remember, and they rarely were separate. It wasn't that Saillym wasn't interested in playing with other kids her age - there just weren't any. The small town was dying, families moving away as soon as they were able. Saya never learned why - Momma never told her about the things that Came Before, or why the once-lush ground had become so barren. It was just the way it was.

Saya's childhood was lonely, though she never understood why she let herself think that way. She'd heard the baker - the next youngest in the town - talk about giving herself affirmations to try to keep her head up and happy, so the Saillym tried to follow suit. This was how she found her magic, whispering things to herself that she wished were truths. "There is no cause to be lonely." "You are brilliantly bright." "You will absolutely be successful." Little colored bubbles dripped from her lips, catching the words and dancing around her until they popped with almost a sigh. She ran to tell her mother, who smiled, and taught her the ways of magic.

Momma taught her about the deities of the area during her magic training, though no one else seemed to worship them anymore. Perhaps the others were angry at the Nothing that Saya didn't know happened, but they were just... there, in Saillym's life. Diety was not something to be feared or over respected - they were little creatures of whimsical power, and what they were going to do would happen regardless of how much you tried to placate them.

She learned to write as a teen, as a way to say the words the bubbles would float without anyone else being able to hear them. It wasn't until years later that she decided that she wanted them to be known by others, to reach and stretch and bring her friends. Most of the stories she's written (most that she writes) are tales where she can insert herself in order to live the lives she wished she could lead.

The girl left her home to find her star, to work for a small journal and find more things to write about, maybe to have real events bring her inspiration. Maybe her romance won't just live in her head, in her very small world. [452]

Saillym can blow bubbles that encapsulate whatever sound is near her mouth, making it so that neither she nor anyone else can hear what she encapsulated until the bubbles are popped. At her current discipline (2) she is only able to capture her own words, but she is now also able to choose when she captures those words rather than accidental spittle suddenly silencing her entirely. As she grows more disiplined, she will be able to save/capture environmental sounds, and then things that people say near her face, and then things futher away. As her power grows, she will be able to increase in the number of "active"/unpopped bubbles, the bubbles will be able to travel further away, or the bubbles will become more difficult to pop. Currently, most of her power (3) has gone into increasing the number of bubbles (up to five) and allowing it to drift slightly from her body.

Costs

  • Magic slightly impairs the caster's memory, so that they may not remember using it, or be confused afterward. (2) - until the bubble pops, Saya is entirely unable to remember what is inside the bubble, and will not remember unless the bubble pops where she can hear it. Note, it is only what was put into the bubble - if someone says "I love you" into the bubble, she doesn't know that they said it, but if they say "I love you" before and then also put it in the bubble, she will remember the earlier occurance. If it's birdsong, it's just what she heard/was near her at the moment. She just cannot tell what has gone into the bubbles that might surround her.
