Clothing Style

In life, Vanessa apparently dressed in a more Victorian-ish style since she lived in Great Britain at some point in the past. Now however, she has little trace of her old style. The most she has are the bands on her upper arms that have a pattern that is mildly inspired by the Union Jack. Her style is somewhat steampunk with her leather corset, rectangular goggles, and metal accessories, but she has a handful of modern touches added in. She wears a beige/tan colored sleeveless top with her corset and blue jean shorts. Other than her previously mentioned arm bands, she also wears bronze colored elbow pads and leather fingerless gloves with metal reinforcement and cross-shaped silver pins attached to the ends, which match the crosses that Kain wears. Around her hips she wears two crossing leather belts, each having one cross-shaped buckle and one gear shaped buckle. She wears thigh high leather boots with metal reinforcement on the tops and steel heels and toes. The metal reinforcement on her heels are bladed, and the tops of her boots have platinum studs and large diamond clasps, which were gifts from Kain. Her right boot has a strap for a silver dagger.

Her bronze colored goggles are usually worn on her head, and the blue lenses allow her to see into the mortal realm that is outside of Yashanarika wherever she might be. Her dangling earrings have three beads, the top connected to her ear being bronze, the middle being a diamond shaped blue crystal, and the bottom being a silver cube. These were also gifts from Kain. Her leather choker has a pendant in the shape of the joker suite symbol from Criss's cards, which was given to her by him.

Personality

Vanessa is a low-energy and inexpressive woman who is motivated primarily by self interest. She has perfected the art of manipulating others and leeching off of powerful people. She has a cunning mind and is very opportunistic, and she tends to make selfish decisions and avoids tasks that take too much physical effort. She prefers to talk others into doing things for her and will leave situations if she can't benefit from them. She has a habit of being unsympathetic and rarely cares about who she hurts with her actions. Since she tends to be a follower of powerful people, she always appears to be supportive of whomever seems to be best off and can benefit her the most. On the surface she just seems to be a quiet follower who avoids being the center of attention, but closer inspection will make clear that she's two-faced and will do whatever it takes to suck up to whomever is in charge without being too obvious. In most cases, she's not overly dramatic or obvious about staying on her benefactor's good side and tends to be very subtle, although with certain people she purposefully doesn't put much effort into acting if they trust her too much. It's clear that Vanessa doesn't like putting forth effort toward things that won't benefit her, and she tends to be apathetic toward most people or even dismissive depending on her impression of them. She seems to have a hard time figuring out how to make progress in her goals if she doesn't have other people to leech off of.

When she's not focusing on keep up her supportive-follower persona, Vanessa tends to be rather aimless and is often seen wandering around trying to find something to entertain herself. She seems to have trouble finding things that genuinely bring her happiness, and often she doesn't even know exactly what her goals are beyond riding the wave of the successful people she gravitates toward. The simple things in life tend to bore her, and she never seems to smile much unless it's needed to keep on the good side of her benefactor. She is very observant though and always tries to be aware of her surroundings just in case she needs to make an escape. Her instincts for self preservation are pretty strong, but she's certainly not a loyal ally if she feels the situation is going south.

Backstory

Vanessa doesn't speak of her past much, and she's only revealed how she died to a few others. She encountered Criss while wandering Yashanarika and tagged along with him due to the power he exuded, and she eventually found his company and conversation was enjoyable. She treats him with affection, and although he clearly is not interested in her romantically he doesn't deny her since he also enjoys her company.

During their travels, Vanessa got trapped in the pocket dimension of Flipside, where she met Kain Faustnoir. She took little interest in him, despite the kindness Criss seemed to show him, but this changed once Kain found his power and overthrew the Eksel controlling the dimension. She has started a romantic relationship with Kain to stay on his good side, and although she notices that Criss is disappointed in her deceit she doesn't seem to care as long as she has them both wrapped around her finger.
