Umbriel is an angel in the cherubim choir who used to work with Jibril under the goddess of darkness to find and contain any magical artifacts reamining from the Great War before any mortals can rediscover and misuse them. However, one of the objects he was seeking ended up being something that had slipped through from the eldritch dimension, and, in an attempt to prevent a Certain Eldritch Cult from stealing it, he wound up touching it with his Bare Hands. The potent otherworldly magic corrupted Umbriel's entire being on contact since angels are basically one big soul and briefly warped him between the eldritch's dimension and Ceres and plagued him with seeing ("seeing") and hearing fragments of the other dimension on and off even after he was returned.

After trying and failing to find a way to return to fix himself, Umbriel decided his best bet was to reincarnate into a new body that would hopefully be free of this affliction. Unfortunately, his soul was so corrupted by this point that he was no longer recognizable as an angel and a reaper, Dusk, showed up to claim his soul. As soon as he tried to reap him, the contimination spread through his scythe and corrupted Dusk as well since reaper scythes are extensions of their souls, which was not the greatest thing for Umbriel to wake up to since reincarnating didn't even work. Both of them are now too far corrupted to be sensed by their goddesses or the other angels and are presumed dead- a perspective they are in no hurry to fix since they fear they'd be considered too great of a risk to allow to live anyway- and are working together to find a way to return themselves to normal.
