Born and raised in California, Chris is the eldest of Lawrence and Jenny Shepard's two daughters. When Chris was 13, her mother tragically died of breast cancer, leaving Lawrence to raise their children alone while juggling his business, and Chris became even more of a daddy's girl than before. Growing up, she found immense satisfaction in proving that anything a boy could do, she could do better, and it was this drive that partly fueled her aspiration changes.
Although originally planning to take over her father's business and set up a line of her own, she instead decided to enter law enforcement after noticing that too many of her local force were sexist white men. (Although she didn't care much for the uniform.) Her father lived long enough to see her become a detective in her early 30s before suffering a fatal heart attack, leaving his fortune to his two daughters, and it was following his death that Chris moved to Lakewood City. Although her younger sister, Ada, keeps a low profile and is always on the move due to work, the two remain close.

- Her younger sister, Ada, works in corporate espionage – primarily for labs and pharmaceutical companies, especially those dabbling illegally in bio-warfare and experimentation. As a result, Chris doesn't see her in-person often and never has a contact number for her.

Almost a year into their relationship, however, she discovered that her so-called girlfriend had been cheating on her with some guy and had never even liked girls to begin with – she'd just gone along with it because Chris was wealthy. She suffered a lot of internalized homophobia as a result but eventually learned to shake it off and has been unapologetically sleeping with women ever since although she's still an emotionally distant commitment and relationship-phobe decades later.
