☀️Appearance ☀️

Since he's been a Mourner for a while his ceremonial garb is heavily decorated in silver bells.

Unless at home, wears his religious garb that completely covers his body and face. Only time he's seen without his mask in public is if he's giving funeral rites

Keeps his hair cut short, shaves the sides of his head. His hair is starting to have streaks of grey to it.

Has faint pockmarks on his cheeks

✴️Personality✴️

Empathetic. Was called a crybaby while growing up, but now garners praise for actually crying over the people he buries. Thinks it funny that if he were to leave his position he would once again be seen as weak.

Stickler for most religious tenants. Willing to bend the rules a bit in order to ensure very few people where he lives are buried alone. He deeply believes that everyone deserves to have someone to cry over their death.

Lonely. His position demands it from him, but it doesn't mean that it isn't still a painful feeling.

Very devout, but very aware of the corruption within his faith.

🌕Backstory🌕

Named after a friend of his parents. His parents' friend spelled his name as "Rayner" however.

Rahyner has no living family members.
His mother and younger sister died from influenza when he was very young. His father died when he was 6 in a freak accident. After the death of his father, his older two brothers, John and Kelley, stepped in to care for him older sister. Kelley went of and became a witch hunter when he was 10.  His eldest brother, John, died in 1855 during one of the skirmishes following the end of the Three Seas War. Rahyner and his sister, Promise, survived off the little work the two of them could get and the money that Kelley sent home. Promise died suddenly in 1859 followed by Kelley several months later.
Rahyner arrived in time for both his brother's cremation and burial. Being that Kelley was a witch hunter, Rahyner hadn't seen nor spoken to Kelley in the 10 years since he left. Rahyner still loved him though and was furious to find that the Mourner never bothered to show. Rahyner buried his brother alone and did the burial rites the best as he could. he lodged a complaint with the Witch Hunter's Guild(?). Upon returning home, went to  his local church and became part of the clergy with intent to become a Mourner.
Eventually goes back and buries his brother properly.

Hated the first person that trained him, but liked the second man a lot.

As a Mourner, he is unable to marry. Rahyner wishes to start a family, but doesn't want to leave his position without feeling that he's successfully trained someone who will actually stay in the position for more than a couple years  and has the integrity to actually do the job right. Mourners are a position that people typically only hold a few years before moving into a different position in the clergy. It is also a position that is very telling of corruption because it's not like the dead can tattle.
Has somewhat accepted he might never leave. This very much may be the purpose of his life.

Lives a very isolated life as that is what his position requires from him.

The bells on his costume represent how many funerals he has been a Mourner for where the deceased gave their life up for the church (typically being a witchhunter)

Far off thing, but Rahyner stays being a Mourner for his entire life, and ultimately decides to attempt to become a church grim. He is one of the few people where the ritual actually succeeds.
