Valentine Holliday is suffering from near constant bizarre hallucinations, mostly concerning angels, demons, talking animals and his own persecution.
Valentine grew up absent most parental guidance, his mother suffered a complete mental breakdown shortly after his birth and went missing. His father was a rancher and a much-despised loan shark, who wanted little to do with raising any children too young to do manual labor on his behalf. No one but his father was surprised when he became an ill-socialized and angry young man. Much more shocking was the accident; wherein, according to the local newspaper, in a fit of jealous rage, Valentine's father attempted to kill him over a woman. The coroner reported that he was kicked in the head by one of the ranch's loyal horses, killing him.
Valentine suffered a pretty significant head wound, and was hospitalized after he was found unconscious at the scene of the crime. By the time anyone thought to question the legitimacy of the initial report, Valentine (and the horse) had skipped town entirely, and faded quickly from everyone's memory. His condition has improved greatly in the near-decade since the accident, though his personality has become near-unrecognizable. Upon first impression, Valentine is extremely strange, most others have never seen a man as dysfunctional as him maintain a life and career as well as he has. He doesn't seem to fully grasp reality beyond the essentials of trade and law, and even those become fuzzy dependent on his desperation at any given moment. He is loud, excitable, lecherous, greedy, vaguely charismatic and deeply unhinged. As well as chronically unlucky, and is frequently recovering from some kind of foolish injury or accident.
He works primarily as a hunter, pursuing both man and animal with unexpected efficiency. Though it is hard to be a functional outdoorsman when your horse actively hates you.
Valentine is very hurt that Ralphie would try to besmirch his good reputation like this. He would like to have a conversation with him.
