Aaron
01 — Profile

Forever the golden boy of the Virion Project, a former accident has forced Aaron to constantly carry the weight of his guilt with him. Even though he seems professional and removed, he has a heart of gold. His photographic memory makes him a brilliant detective, even as he constantly tries to distance himself from his unforgettable past.

02 — Personality

In the past, Aaron used to be incredibly sociable, charismatic, and talkative -- people would often call him a flirt, given the familiar, touchy way that he acted even with virtual strangers. Constantly telling jokes and calling people by nicknames, you could talk to him and feel like you were reading an open book; whatever you asked, he would answer, believing that there was no better policy to make friends than true honesty. It was difficult to find him without a genuine grin on his face, flitting around the Virion Project’s many divisions to meet new people and share what he’d found out -- and, of course, doting on his partner, Duncan Ferelle in private (or in public, depending on how affectionate he was feeling in the moment).

It was often difficult to imagine him as a detective or an Investigator, but Aaron loved to impress others with how intelligent he truly could be. Highly deductive and logical, he was known for being able to put together crime scenes and solve otherwise-unsolvable mysteries with the power of his photographic memory. A highly flexible thinker, Aaron was more than capable of adjusting his hypotheses and theories every time he noticed a new detail in the photos he kept in his mind or received information that he otherwise hadn’t known before. He had a youthful confidence in his own ability to “solve any problem in five minutes flat” -- and, for the most part, he was right! There was little that it felt like the Investigators couldn’t do with Aaron on their side, helping to puzzle out mysteries that anyone else would’ve given up on solving.

The Outbreak Incident would change his entire demeanor significantly: the Aaron that came out of the hospital was no longer the lighthearted flirt that he’d been ever since he was young. Significantly more serious and mature, Aaron now carries himself with a new weight on his shoulders that seems to slow every movement that he makes. Doggedly devoting himself to the safety of his new team, it’s hard to find him moving around the Virion Project building with as much energy as he’d had in the past -- let alone joking, making unnecessary small talk, or even just smiling as much as he’d used to. Sure, he’s still just as intelligent as he’s always been, but his whole mind’s set on solving the viscerosis problem before it takes away anything or anyone else from him. Sure, he might still have a photographic memory, but the images that he has constantly flashing through his mind sometimes make it feel like more of a curse than any sort of blessing. Sure, he might’ve always been told to grow up -- but by God, he’d never imagined being forced to grow up the way that he actually did.

What’s weighing him down now is a new sense of responsibility towards the people around him that he’d previously been able to hide -- or even ignore -- due to the faith he held in his own reasoning skills, believing that they were the only thing he needed to prevent anything bad from happening to the people that he cared about. He feels a certain degree of guilt for the people that he couldn’t save during the Outbreak, but he uses that to fuel every step forward into the future that he takes, hoping that as long as this time, he can be strong enough – smart enough – and quick enough, nobody else will have to suffer the way that he, his partner, and his team did in the past. And in that belief itself is the everlasting trace of the naive idealism that he’d held so close to his heart in the past.

03 — Background

Past

Born to rich, well-off parents in Atriven City, Aaron was the older brother in the family, doting on his younger sister, Olivia, throughout his youth. He would often attend different social functions and parties, making and picking up friends nearly everywhere he went -- partially because of how easy he was to get along with, partially because he was, well, extremely well-off. He developed a reputation for being so generous as to lend money to essentially anybody who'd ask him to, just to see them happy; his realization that most of his "friends" had just been using him all along is still one of the most negative memories he has of his childhood.

The cast-out web of his wide social network essentially ensured that, at some point, he would run into news of viscerosis -- a deadly disease that had killed some of the parents of the many people that he'd talked to. As he entered college, he was convinced that his work in the future would have something to do with combating the disease that seemed to be making such an impact in Atriven City, an entire organization had been constructed to find a cure. Aaron wasn't stupid -- he knew that he'd been born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He thought that the Virion Project would be his way to finally give back.

While he was in his junior year of college, he would meet his future partner and his best friend: Duncan Ferelle and Chanto Valerin, two freshmen that he essentially ended up taking under his wing. Even though Aaron had to act as the mediator between the two of them at first, the three quickly grew into the best of friends, rarely being seen apart. Aaron and Duncan started dating in Aaron's senior year, with Aaron convincing the two of them to apply for the Virion Project once they'd also gotten their degrees a year later.

Given Aaron's exceptional memory and performance on his school exams, it was no surprise to any of them that he would be accepted as an Investigator in the Virion Project. The constant updates that he would send his friends convinced both Chanto and Duncan that, despite any personal misgivings, this could be the right path for them to follow as well. A year later, Chanto would join the Forensics Division, while Duncan would follow Aaron's path as an Investigator -- the two of them making the promise that they would protect each other on the front lines, finding a cure for viscerosis together.

Virion Project

Aaron was, of course, overjoyed to have his partner Duncan with him when the two of them joined the Virion Project together -- and he would constantly pay visits to the Forensics Division in order to visit his best friend, Chanto, under the excuse of having case files or physical evidence to discuss with her. The other slots of the Investigation Division were filled by Clarence Rheuma and Kay Mironov, two other new graduates that Aaron quickly made friends with as well. The first few years of the Virion Project were filled with the exact sort of satisfaction that Aaron had always wanted to find in a job: meeting, learning, and enjoying the time he had with his friends even as they were working together for the greater good.

His daydreams were shattered in an afternoon by the Outbreak Incident, which occurred only a few short years after he’d joined the Project. The Investigators were on the frontlines, as always -- and the viscerosis victims that they were sent to interrogate had lost more of themselves than the Investigators had initially imagined them to. Even though the outbreak was contained, it came at the cost of nearly every member of the Virion Project’s initial Investigation Division. All four of them, including Aaron, contracted viscerosis.

While Aaron and Kay lost their right and left eyes, respectively, Duncan and Clarence were left in a far worse condition -- with Duncan having lost an arm and an eye, Clarence having lost his vision and most of his memories and former humanity. It wasn’t too long after that that Aaron took his first hit: Kay telling him that they were quitting the Virion Project as a whole, and taking Clarence with them. He turned towards Duncan -- only for Duncan to tell Aaron that he wanted to step back from being an Investigator, working in a Division farther removed from the front lines.

Bitterly disappointed in Duncan for breaking the promise that the two of them had made to each other when they first started dating, the two of them wound up ending their relationship entirely. Aaron devoted himself wholly to the Investigation Division, while Duncan fell back into the Research Division; years later, it’s still difficult for them to make eye contact in the halls when they pass each other during their work.

Lucius Zuciane, Nikolai Korobeiniki, and Tolys Mareika would end up filling in for the Investigation Division’s lost members. Aaron’s formed unlikely friendships with all of them, despite them being some of the more... difficult-to-talk-to Project members, pre-Outbreak. As the de facto Division Head (by virtue of experience rather than by choice), he feels more responsibility than ever to make sure that his team stays together. He’s not sure what he would do if he had to face another loss the way he did in the past.

04 — Trivia

  • He has a British accent (but he sounds cool I promise).

  • His specialty as an Aero EQE user is electricity. While most advanced Aero users can only command small shocks at a close distance, he's able to generate much larger ones that can cover much more ground -- not to the point of being potentially fatal, however.

  • Used to be against smoking, though stress makes him use a stick or two every now and then. He tries to make sure not to make it an addiction, but maybe his current coworkers are a bad influence on him in this regard...

  • As he's always tired, he tends to nap immediately once he gets back to his apartment and finishes his work. The coffee he constantly drinks makes him a light sleeper; instead of sleeping a full 8 hours at night he takes 3-4 hour nap intervals. Sleeping too much puts him in a bad mood.

On a related note, having at least one day without coffee gives him a terrible migraine that can only be cured by consuming caffeine.

  • Under his eyepatch is a prosthetic glass eye. His original eye had to be removed due to complications from viscerosis.

  • Has a semi-low alcohol tolerance. Before the Outbreak, he would always laugh out loud and act flirty with others while drunk. After the Outbreak however, he tends to really emotional under the influence of alcohol and would shed tears sharing his regrets to the person next to him.

05 — Relationships

lucius.gif
coworker

”I can rely on him. I can’t ask for anything more in a friend or a partner.”

While Aaron might be more serious than he ever was in the past, Lucius is the only person who still treats him like the Aaron he used to be -- teasing him occasionally, trying to make small talk, encouraging him to relax more than he feels like he’s allowed to... and, overall, not acting all the time as if Aaron’s made of glass. He enjoys Lucius’s company, and knows that Lucius is just as formidable of a detective as he is: smart and sharp, if a bit quick on the draw when it comes to staring viscerosis victims in the eye.

The two of them make a formidable pair... even if Aaron feels like sometimes Lucius has a set of eyes in the back of his head. It sometimes feels as if Lucius knows more about him -- or, really, the Virion Project as a whole -- than he’d ever care to let on.

nikolai.gif
coworker

”Heh... Nikolai and I are good friends. He doesn’t talk much, but I don’t either, so I can’t blame him for it. I wish he would let his guard down sometimes, but making him crack a smile when I tell a joke is close enough.”

Aaron found an unlikely friend and companion in Nikolai -- even if their first few meetings consisted of Nikolai lighting up a cigarette for him on the porch of the Virion Project building. Aaron sees himself in Nikolai, in a way: both of them have younger sisters, both of them feel a strong sense of responsibility, both of them show that they care through their actions, rather than their words. He’s grateful for how Nikolai actively tries to make Aaron’s life easier, making or buying him coffee and sorting his case files whenever Aaron’s out of the office.

At the same time, though, when he looks at Nikolai, he can’t help but sometimes see a trace of the Duncan that he used to know – down to their serious expressions, their standoffishness that morphs into kindness, the way they only rarely smile, even the way their hair falls over their right eyes. It sometimes makes him feel like he’s constantly staring at a living ghost.

tolys.gif
coworker

”Tolys can talk... a lot. He’s passionate about what he likes, which is something I admire. And he somehow always has a smoke when I ask for one -- or even when I don’t.”

Tolys invokes... conflicted feelings in Aaron. On one hand, it’s not like he actively dislikes Tolys -- he makes for a great conversation partner, always finding a way to take Aaron’s mind off of the pressing issues that always seem to be weighing him down. On the other hand, there’s just something about the way that Tolys acts that makes Aaron see too much of himself in him -- too much of his past self, to be precise. It’s the way that he’s constantly smiling and laughing, talking and lending an ear to whoever cares to listen, acting as if he doesn’t truly understand the weight of the Virion Project (even if Aaron tries to convince himself that Tolys does).

Aaron would consider them friends, at the very least. He just doesn’t want to see Tolys get crushed, the way that he was in the past.
