Duncan
01 — Profile

Duncan has carried a resigned, melancholic air about him ever since the accident that took his arm and his eye. He's intensely focused on his work and intensely dislikes anybody who isn't, making him hard to get along with at times. Given everything that he's sacrificed so far, all he wants now is for the Virion Project to succeed, making all his efforts worth it.

Name Duncan Ferelle
Age 29
Pronouns He/Him
Height 5’8”
Birthdate January 17 (Capricorn)
Orientation Bisexual
Occupation Forensic Psychologist

Race Human
Element Aero
Essence Esper, ex-EQE user.
Alignment Virion Project
  • He has sectoral heterochromia in his right eye; the top of his iris is orange, and the bottom is teal. His left eye is entirely teal (and blind).

  • The black, bruise-like scar over his left eye is a scar from viscerosis, covering his left cheek with black veins. The other scars he has are darker-red burn scars.

  • Hair is usually tied back in a low ponytail, but he can be drawn without one. It's around shoulder-length when let down.

  • The Virion Project logo on his prosthetic arm is usually dull/dim, but it glows bright teal when Duncan uses essence.

  • He rolls up the sleeve on his right arm to make it easier to bend his prosthetic arm; it's still rolled down on his left arm.

  • Wears an ID lace with the Research Division's symbol on it.

02 — Personality

Always carrying a somewhat-resigned air about him, Duncan's stern expression wins him few friends -- not like he's particularly inclined to make any, in the first place. There always seems to be a sense of distance between him and his coworkers, no matter how cordially they might act in the office when they're together. He has little interest in small talk and hates seeing people slack off, often unintentionally snapping at people who don't take themselves as seriously as he thinks they should in a professional setting. People tend to shy away from him on their own, given how serious and intelligent they know him to be. He'd rather be seen as intimidating, anyway. It gives him more time to focus on his work and what he finds to be important.

Duncan's highly invested in the success of the Virion Project: he always puts his best foot forward when he's on the job, acting as impartially as he can towards his clients while writing well-researched, competent analyses of all the raw data that he collects. He has a strange knack for getting people to trust him; his blunt, no-nonsense manner of speech and the surprising amount of empathy that he extends whenever he's conducting interviews charge his words with a sense of honesty that few others can match. You'd be hard-pressed to find anybody that acts as with much professional courtesy as Duncan does. Even though his old temper sometimes peeks through his calm mask, he always manages to tamp it down with a sharp inhale -- for long enough to get the job done, at least.

Outside of work, Duncan can be somewhat melancholic, reminiscing about his past with the Investigation Division with a bittersweet nostalgia that he's never managed to fully push away. While he's made his own peace with what happened in the past -- unlike his ex-boyfriend, Aaron, that is -- he still misses the presence of his former friends. The lack of closure bothers him; it was difficult enough for him to admit to himself that he cared about them, and the fact that they near-completely disappeared before he could ever do anything about it only worsens the regret that he carries in his heart. While he might not be able to say it, he no longer works just for the sake of proving himself to the people around him. He keeps going for the same reason that he knows Aaron does: for the sake of trying to make something in the world around him better than it was before.

03 — Background

Past

Duncan's parents were incredibly intelligent, incredibly academically-focused individuals: they named their son after Duncan, the Shakespeare character, for a reason. Their strict mindset bled into every aspect of Duncan's childhood. As the only child in the family, Duncan was expected not only to succeed, but to excel: whether that be in terms of his grades, his speech and debate tournaments, his piano competitions. He was praised whenever he did well, but was explicitly told whenever he'd failed to meet expectations or if his parents were disappointed in him. As a result, Duncan became incredibly reliant on his parents' words throughout his youth. Their opinions quickly became the only opinions that mattered to him at all.

As a result, however, Duncan found it difficult to make and maintain any sort of friendships throughout his childhood whatsoever. He had incredibly high expectations of others, and would immediately snap and get irritated whenever people didn't live up to them. It was difficult for him to ever reveal anything personal about himself to anyone, not wanting to come off as weak or vulnerable to people who, really, were nothing more than acquaintances. People either avoided him or wanted to make friends with the "teacher's pet," leeching off of his notes and study guides all throughout his high school years.

When Duncan entered college, he was rude, closed-off, and highly suspicious of anybody who wanted to make friends with him -- thinking that they were going to just use him for his intelligence again. It wouldn't take long for his future partner and best friend to crack his shell, however: during orientation, right after he'd bought a stack of expensive textbooks, he quite literally ran into Chanto Valerin as she was passing by with a plate of food and drinks. The resulting accident completely ruined his books -- and just as he was about to explode, demanding that Chanto pay him back or buy him new ones, a college junior Aaron Vesre intervened and offered to make up the damages.

The three of them would become inseparable (even if Aaron had to spend most of their first few months together breaking up fights between Duncan and Chanto), rarely ever seen apart outside of their classes. Aaron and Duncan would start dating during Aaron's senior year; his partner's devotion and success at the Virion Project would convince an otherwise-reluctant Duncan to apply for an internship there as well. Joining Aaron as part of the Investigation Division the moment that he graduated, he and Aaron made a promise to each other that Duncan's never quite managed to forget: they would protect each other on the front lines, fighting until the end to find a cure for viscerosis.

Virion Project

To Duncan's relief, the transition out of his strictly-academic childhood to the work of the Virion Project wasn't as difficult as he'd imagined it would be. He loved the research that he was doing, even enjoying the interviews and depositions he would do as the forensic psychologist on the team. Even though he initially had a rocky relationship with Clarence Rheuma and Kay Mironov, the other two Investigators, he'd begrudgingly admit that they were "friends" as well -- only to a certain extent, though!

The first few years of the Virion Project caused Duncan, to his own surprise, to get more invested in the cause than he'd ever thought he'd be. For once, he wasn't working for the approval of his parents: he was working towards something greater than him, while still getting the recognition for his intelligence that he felt like he deserved. Just as he was starting to settle in, the Outbreak Incident would cause his budding ideals to crash around him. On the front lines with the other Investigators, none of them expected the viscerosis victims that they were sent to interrogate to fight back as strongly as they did. Even though the Containment Division eventually came to their rescue, it came at the cost of nearly every member of the original Investigation Division: all four of them, including Duncan, contracted viscerosis.

While Aaron and Kay lost a right and a left eye, respectively, Duncan and Clarence were left in a far worse condition: Duncan lost an arm and an eye, while Clarence lost their vision and their former humanity entirely. Duncan was furious -- partially at himself for letting it happen, partially at Kay and Clarence for disappearing without even saying goodbye, partially at Aaron for wanting to continue to be an Investigator, despite everything that'd happened to them. He couldn't understand why Aaron would risk his life -- again. Hadn't the two of them already lost enough?

Despite Aaron's intense disappointment in him (and, really, his disappointment in himself for breaking their old promise), Duncan's pragmatism and sense of survival won out above all else. He and Aaron would ultimately end their relationship as Duncan retreated into the relative safety of the Research Division, even as Aaron stood in the spotlight as the de facto leader of a new group of Investigators. It's still hard for them to make eye contact in the hallways, even though so many years have passed. Duncan would never admit it, but he misses Aaron; Aaron, on the other hand, seems bitterly opposed to ever having to face Duncan again.

Even though he might've removed himself from the front lines, Duncan believes in the Virion Project even more strongly than he did when he was an Investigator. He's determined not to fail -- not a second time, at least. The people he's working with are intelligent enough, by his standards, and clearly putting their all into the research that they're doing. If he can find a cure for viscerosis, after all, then maybe the missing Clarence and Kay will reappear, the regret that Chanto carries will finally lift off of her shoulders, and the rift between him and Aaron can finally come to a close.

04 — Trivia

  • After the Incident, Duncan stopped using EQE to supplement his essence use. Even though his prosthetic arm isn't EQE technology, it still allows Duncan to channel essence through it (given that he's a natural esper).

  • Ever since the Incident, his body temperature's been lower than normal. (The metal arm doesn't help.)

  • Because his prosthetic arm is detachable (for maintenance checks and cleaning), Duncan has to make sure that it doesn't get pulled on too hard whenever he's out. Chanto always does this to mess with him, much to his chagrin.

  • He switched the side that his bangs were on after the Incident, wanting to cover up his blind eye and avoid weird looks from others. Chanto offered him a hairclip to pin it up, but he'd prefer to just keep his scars hidden.

  • Even though his eyes used to be orange, the surge of essence in his body ended up changing his eye color -- blinding and turning his left eye entirely teal, while leaving him with sectoral heterochromia in his right eye. Thankfully, he still has normal vision there.

  • It's always been a habit of his to listen to classical music while reading to help him concentrate, even though he only does out loud at home. He only reads in silence when he has to absorb important information.

05 — Relationships

laverne.gif
coworkers/friends (crush...?)

”She knows what she's doing, which is more than I can say about half the Virion Project. I wish we got to know each other better. I owe her a lot for what she's done for me, after all.”

Even after so many years, Duncan's still deeply grateful to Laverne for having seen him at his worst, recovering from the Outbreak Incident with the rest of the former Investigation Division. While he was embarrassed at first about having Laverne see him in such a vulnerable state, time has tempered his former shame; now, he's just glad to be able to work with somebody as competent and responsible as her in the Research Division.

He's... admittedly a bit attracted to her, even if he'd never say it. Every time Laverne recommends him books to read or media to watch, he'll (internally) sigh and accept, just so that the two of them have something to talk about -- no matter how much he dislikes fiction, in general.

cameron.gif
coworkers/friends

”They're very kind. I know, they can be a bit quiet, but that doesn't make them any less hardworking... which I appreciate. I can't see myself ever getting mad at them.”

Given that Cameron's the one who designed and built Duncan's prosthetic arm, Duncan can't help but feel grateful to them; their skill with physical, hands-on engineering is something that Duncan's always begrudgingly admired, given that most of their work is purely theoretical and academic in comparison. It's difficult to truly get irritated at Cameron, and Duncan isn't immune to the sense of guilt that he feels whenever he's even slightly annoyed at them.

The two of them, surprisingly, spend a lot of time together -- working silently, side-by-side. It almost reminds Duncan of somebody else that they used to work parallel to, several years ago.

anyapierre.gif
(worst) division heads

”It genuinely baffles me how these two managed to claw their way into being division heads and -- and then stay there?! There has to be somebody I can report this to... that'll actually do something about it, tch.”

Duncan can't stand how lackadaisically Anya and Pierre act, particularly given the fact that they're in a position of authority compared to him. Sure, they're competent and seemingly-intelligent and, if it comes down to it, probably know what they're doing. But at the same time, as the Division Heads, shouldn't they be acting... more like actual Division Heads?!

While he swallows his irritation every time he gets given a task or assignment, he's more than happy to vent his frustrations whenever he gets a chance to. (He's not super good at hiding it even when the two of them are around, to be honest; his face sours every time they enter the room.)

lisza.gif
(probably unreliable) intern

”Ugh... She has a lot of growing up to do. That's the nicest way I can put it, I guess. Is it so much to ask that, as an intern, you get things done when I assign them to you?”

While Duncan's... somewhat tolerant of Lisza's messiness and bad habits (he's had plenty of time to learn from Chanto, after all), the one thing he can't stand is her work ethic. As somebody who always takes his work very seriously, getting things done ahead of time and to the best of his ability no matter what he's assigned, Lisza's laziness aggravates him. She does things last minute, she rushes on all her deadlines, she gets things done, but there's no way it's her best work!

Duncan tends to scold her a lot -- partially because he's just straight-up irritated with her, partially because he wants her to do better. He doesn't make for... the most appealing mentor, in all honesty, though.
