Cameron
01 — Profile

A brilliant engineer and artist, Cameron can fixate on their projects for hours, holding onto that creative spark that's driven them throughout their life. Having grown up isolated from the world around them, they can be somewhat awkward and intimidating. In private, Cameron has a surprisingly soft and expressive side they only show to the people willing to get to know them.

  • Never takes off kerchief in public; please don't draw them without it!

  • Hair is tied in a low ponytail that extends to around their waist.

  • You can draw them with either the cat cap or with their goggles. They wear their goggles when they're working, but usually have the cap on otherwise.

  • Feel free to design your own pins for them to wear, as long as it sticks to their monochrome color palette!

  • Their drawing glove is magnetic, while also serving as a surge protector. Their belt buckle acts as a button that can magnetize their belt, allowing them to carry tools around whenever they need to. Their electrolarynx can produce an artificial voice, allowing them to "speak" through either mouth movement or by thought.

  • Has a cat pin clip-on ID attached to their jacket's left lapel.

02 — Personality

Cameron's intense childhood fears about interacting with others matured into a healthy preference for simply being alone -- separate from everybody except for their sister, Laverne, of course. They prefer to spend most of their time absorbed in their work, finding the process of making art or drawing engineering blueprints to be their main source of comfort and happiness. They often lose track of time whenever they're focused, working late into the night in order to make sure that none of their ideas slip off of the page in the middle of their sleep. As a result, however, they often look groggy, sleeping for incredibly long periods of time whenever their attention can be pulled away from their work. It's hard to rouse them, on the best of days -- and impossible to do so whenever they've just finished a big project.

As a result of their height, their silence, and the tired expression they always have on their face, however, people tend to find Cameron to be relatively intimidating at first glance. They find it upsetting to always be asked to speak, and have no problems maintaining a stubborn silence that often scares most people away from interacting with them. Somewhat pessimistic and sensitive, it's easy for Cameron to lock themself away, isolating themself from the public whenever they feel overwhelmed. Having suffered from depression and intrusive thoughts as a child, they still dislike being perceived by others, panicking whenever they're forcefully thrust into the spotlight. Cameron turns a lot of their nervous energy into their art, feeling restless whenever they have to go even a single day without drawing. Their room is often filled with sketchbooks and scrapped designs that never see the light of day, having been made as a means of distracting themself form their own head.

At the same time, however, they don't necessarily reject social interaction entirely, enjoying the presence of people who are willing to accommodate for their muteness. In private or with the people they care about, their personality seems to do a complete turnaround. They can be surprisingly loving and devoted, expressing themself through exaggerated facial expressions and body language while speaking through sign language; their friends even call them overdramatic, at times. They have a tendency to be messy and disorganized -- and it'd be worse if not for Laverne guilting them into cleaning up after themself every once in a while. For how stiffly they act in public, they truly care about the well-being of the people around them. It makes them feel genuinely touched every time someone's willing to be as loyal towards them as they are towards others.

03 — Background

Past

The only child of the wealthy Carier family, Cameron's been shy ever since they were young. Born with a throat defect that made it hard for them to speak, they'd always preferred being on their own, knowing that most strangers expected them to talk when they found it painful or difficult to. Their parents taught them sign language, allowing them to communicate at home; at school, however, they were often bullied for their silence and for their clumsiness, causing them to distance themself even further from the world around them.

It didn't take long for Cameron's parents to withdraw them from public school, deciding to homeschool them entirely to avoid the bullying. Most of Cameron's childhood was spent in the company of their parents or their tutors. They quickly took to art and engineering, with their birth parent encouraging them to express themself through visual images and their step-parent teaching them everything they knew about electronics. Cameron had the natural ability to quickly and easily visualize things in three-dimensional space in their head, being able to translate almost everything they imagined directly into paper and ink. They spent nearly all of their free time drawing, using art as a medium for expression when their words wouldn't do the trick.

Still, though, their parents worried about the fact that Cameron had never had friends their age. They ultimately decided to adopt Lucius and Laverne, hoping that the presence of the two siblings would allow Cameron to have a bit more of a support system in their life. Cameron was incredibly shy around the two of them, often avoiding their presence or worrying that, as the "older sibling," they'd be expected to be some kind of mentor or guide or person for them to talk to.

Somewhat to their relief, Lucius would shut himself off from the rest of the family. Laverne, however, would continually approach them, learning sign language from the other Cariers just so that they could talk. It was the first time that somebody outside of Cameron's birth family had been willing to accommodate for their inability to speak -- and Cameron, touched, would slowly let Laverne into their life. The two of them developed a vibrant inner world, with Laverne telling stories that Cameron would bring to life through their drawings. Too intimidated by Lucius's hostility to ever grow close to him, Laverne and Cameron would slowly begin to act more like siblings than Lucius and Laverne ever did -- making Cameron happy, despite their lingering guilt for having "stolen" Laverne away from her brother.

During their college years, Cameron would throw themself into the world of engineering and robotics, eventually manufacturing an electrolarynx for themself for their senior thesis. They still preferred to sign, of course -- but as their parents grew more and more sickly with age, Cameron was glad that they had the opportunity to comfort them with their new voice. They would live with Laverne in their family mansion for several years, developing their stories together while caring for their parents. In their spare time, they'd continue to work on increasingly-complex projects, experimenting with creating robotic animals, prosthetic body parts, hologram technology, and more -- even if they were too shy to ever patent anything, despite Laverne's encouragement.

When their parents finally passed, however, Laverne's words would finally break through their shell. Applying for the Research Division in the Virion Project, they were hired immediately once the other essence engineers saw their impressive portfolio. Even though they were hesitant about reaching out beyond the walls of their mansion, with Laverne's help, they knew that they were ready to confront whatever challenges awaited the two of them.

Virion Project

Cameron was seemingly hired at the perfect time. After only a few months to get adjusted to their new workflow, the Outbreak Incident would force them to put their practice constructing prototype prosthetics to work. They would spend days in the workshop at a time, putting together a new prosthetic arm for Duncan, an Investigator who'd gotten seriously injured during the Incident itself. They were relieved when it worked -- and thankful that their work would actually be helping somebody else.

As a member of the Research Division, Cameron throws themself wholeheartedly into their work. They're particularly glad that they get to spend time with Laverne; the fact that the other members of their Division never pressure them to speak is a source of comfort for them, as well, that they'd always thought they'd be deprived of when they were a child. Even though it intimidates them to be looked up to by interns like Lisza, it also flatters them to an extent. They're glad to finally exercise all the art and engineering skills that their parents had taught them when they were younger. Somewhere out there, Cameron hopes that they're proud.

04 — Trivia

  • Their cap and kerchief were clothes that they used to wear as a kid. The kerchief used to be a long scarf, but extensive wear and tear forced them to get it trimmed. Laverne helped adjust the size of the cap and hem the edges of the scarf to make them wearable, even as an adult.

  • They used to be really messy as a kid, leaving their art supplies and books always scattered around the room. These habits have improved over time, ever since they started feeling guilty that Laverne would always be picking up after them.

  • Always used to feed the cats that would walk through their backyard. Their first engineering project were to make two white robot cats, which they keep around to this day. (They were upset about how they always outlived the stray cats they kept around, and wanted a cat that could live forever.)

  • Their electrolarynx functions with both mouth movement and through thought. When speaking via mouth movement, their voice sounds more robotic, but people can sense hints of emotion through it; when speaking via thought, their voice sounds more human, but it's largely monotone and incapable of showing emotion. While they can adjust the tone of voice they can use for the thought-speech, they prefer a voice that sounds androgynous.

  • Can stay up all night working on projects or coming up with new ideas, which is why they seem tired and have eyebags all the time. They text Anya and Pierre at any time of day, almost as if they're never asleep.

  • They love and collect button pins, enamel pins, and patches for them to put onto their jacket and their bag.

05 — Relationships

laverne.gif
sister

”I really don't know what I would do without her... She's always been there for me. Always. I hope that I can be just as reliable for her.”

Laverne's the only person that Cameron truly trusts and confides in; Cameron only feels truly comfortable when Laverne's at their side. She was the first person that they shared their inner imagination with, and one of the few people that they can make the most ridiculous facial expressions to in order to express themselves.

It was a struggle for them to place themselves in the Research Division at first, without Laverne's support, worried that people would ask them about their muteness or be unable to understand their signs. While they've since grown more independent, they'll easily admit that Laverne's presence in the Division is still a great comfort to them whenever they have to talk with others.

(scary guy, but...) coworkers/friends

”He seems... A bit scary. I don't think I would've approached him when I was younger... but he can be very nice to me.”

Cameron, used to watching people at a distance, had always found Duncan to be somewhat intimidating. He took himself incredibly seriously, always seemed focused on what he was doing, and never took any bullshit from anybody else. Even though Cameron knew that they could produce quality work, they always felt somewhat shy showing it to Duncan, not wanting Duncan to criticize them the way that he criticized everyone else.

To their pleasant surprise, though, Duncan never seems to be as irritable with them as he is with everybody else. They wonder if it's the fact that they made his arm... or maybe just because he wants to be friends?

”Laverne says they're like fictional characters... Actors, I mean. I think so too. They're fun to work with. I'm not afraid of texting them, at least. Haha.”

With how theatrically Anya and Pierre act, Cameron's never worried about being the 'odd one out' whenever they're in the same room together. They find it surprisingly easy to express themselves around the two of them; they understand sign language and are even more expressive than Cameron can be, making it easy for Cameron to match their energy when they'd normally be too shy around others to do so.

Cameron's sometimes relieved about the fact that Anya and Pierre are willing to take up space in the room, speaking for them when they feel too overwhelmed to speak for themselves. They have a strange knack for wiggling out of the worst commitments and bringing Cameron to safety with them.

lisza.gif
intern

”She's like a younger sister... not one like Laverne, either. Like. She doesn't feel like a college student. Is that -- a mean thing to say?”

Cameron indulges in a lot of Lisza's habits, seeing their younger self reflected in how Lisza acts: they were also spacey, messy, a little immature. They treat Lisza like a sibling, always being willing to listen to her complain about her tasks and covering for her every time she's being told off by Duncan for something she didn't do on time.

It makes them really happy every time Lisza brings in cute little frog and cat trinkets to show them; they're glad that they don't have to talk, after all, for Lisza to understand them and their interests. Even though they know that they shouldn't let Lisza bring her pet frog into work, they can't help it! They love animals!
