hazel guarra is a young girl living in bonheur, louisiana with her dad and twin sister mae. hazel attends marguerite elementary; this is where she hattie-lynn, elijah, and even more of her soon to be friends. while hazel isn't the type to enjoy getting getting dirty, but she has found, with the help of her friends, she has a surprising knack for spontaneous and dangerous stunts. she is often the first on to jump into action, and the first one to recive all the latest gossip due to her popularity. in contrast to her sister, she is loud and bold, but similarly will always stand up for a friend and what she knows is right and wrong.

hazel is described as: unwavering, peppy, caring, curious and honest.
hazel is never afraid to spring into action, but her unwavering and spontaneous nature can be her downfall at times. she often needs to be held back from doing dangerous things; she doesn't necessarily choose the dangerous path on purpose, but due to her being on the younger side she often struggles to sense where she could get hurt. apart from this, hazel is peppy and looks on the brighter side of life. she even has a keen sense of business for her age, and can tell when to be serious. she also deeply cares for her friends, and makes sure to always be honest, even if the truth hurts. sometimes in moments of weakness, anger, or confusion, like any other child she breaks down. her version of a break down is a tantrum, but before it gets to that point, her emotions are easily recognizable by her body language.
history
the twin's childhood began to a rough start. their mother gave birth to twins in a town north of bonheur, and unfortunately passed away during childbirth. hazel and mae were too young to realize the tragedy that had befallen their family, and grew up with their father, zayne, and their mother's family often helping. while most of the guarra family has been coping over the years, hazel and mae still aren't of age to deal with the situation on their own. understanding to the best of their abilities, it's a sensitive topic for the two, but, they've both grown to have a happy and normal childhood with their family accompanying and watching them along the way.
when the twins were four, hazel, mae, and their father moved to a popular trailer park in bonheur, a little south of their old home. just close enough for their mothers family visit often. like any child, the two grew bored as they got older, and began searching for ways to pass time. that is, until their father announced in july that the twin's grandparents would be paying for a privite school tuition at marguerite elementary. the two were ecstatic waiting for school to begin; and they remained ecstatic for the whole upcoming year. the twins made many acquaintances and shortly joined the friend group after meeting hattie-lynn.
like others in the friend group, hazel was devastated and distraught as hattie-lynn's upcoming plans. in the last school year, she made sure to spend every second with her and the rest of her friends, to the extent of her becoming overly clingy out of fear. what she never expected was that she would be the next to leave the friend group, as of that summer her father told her that they would be moving to their old town due to their grandparents getting older. while not having as big a goodbye as hattie, the twins were still missed, and the old friend group deteriorated a little bit more. the two still missed bonheur in the earlier months, but as they quickly adjusted to their new school and community, they began to forget about all their childhood adventures. due to them both getting older, the twins began to grow apart too.
as of 2019, hazel is now studying economics in singbe, georgia. she has her own apartment and is working part-time at a office job uptown. she is often busy and respected by her peers, but only her close friends know that she loves letting loose and going to clubs; even on work nights. she always goes out of her way to clean herself up, but her friends enjoy teasing her at work. she's happy with her life, but is oblivious to hattie-lynn's return, and is excluded from the reunited arc entirely due to her forgetting her past in bonheur.

relationships
hazel and hattie-lynn met through elijah early in the school year. the two instantly bonded over their 'girly' intrests and sibling 'problems'. she two often have sleepovers and love to trade lipglosses and make-up from justice and claires. hattie would say she admires hazel's style and socialization skills, and hazel admires hattie's ambition and independence.
hazel and annie met through hattie-lynn at marguerite elementary's school carnival, 'fun saturday'. hattie invited annie to come and meet her new friends, to which she obliged and met all of her school friends. this is how the friend group came to be, and how their parents all met. hazel and annie immediately adored each other's differences. hazel would say she admires annie's resourcefulness and carefulness, and annie would say she admires hazel's glamour and positive energy.
hazel and mae have been extremely close ever since they were toddlers. they have always been there for eachother growing up, through their challenges and difficulties, but no matter the issue they resolve their problems within a day. while the two are opposites, deep down they are very similar in their thinking and behavior, and imagination. these facts result in their 'twin telepathy'. hazel admires mae's adventurous attitude and bluntness, and mae admires hazel's carefree attitude and honesty.
