Kiyoshi Matarasu is a sheepish but diligent hunter of the Fifth Fleet who always tries his best, as incompetent as he may be.

Appearance
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Kiyoshi has a full head of unkempt dark purple hair that's parted down the middle, and large eyes that match his hair in color. He has an acorn-shaped face, small nose, and giant ears to boot, giving him a very youthful and baby-like appearance. It doesn't help that he has a very hard time growing facial hair, either. But his most plainly noticeable facial feature is the giant scar that runs from his face to his neck. With his left cheek having been torn off, portions of his jaw and teeth are now exposed.

Shape-wise, Kiyoshi is a little plain. He has a very rectangular body type, and a perfectly average height. He's not what you would call scrawny, but he's definitely leaner than the average hunter. His slim shape gives him an advantage when it comes to speed and agility, but he is a little disappointing when it comes to strength.

Personality
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Kiyoshi is a quirky fellow. He's definitely more reserved and shy than most hunters that you see running around, and he is just about the most awkward and ungraceful person that you'll meet. He's clumsy, both in physical and social situations. He almost never strikes up the conversation first if he doesn't know you, and is terrified of hurting people or offending them. Because of this, he apologizes for almost everything that he does, whether or not it warrants an apology. At first glance, he might seem a little timid, quiet, or weak, but he's mostly just spacey and air-headed.

If you can manage to get past the thick layer of ditz, Kiyoshi is actually an incredibly kind and generous guy. He always puts others before himself, and has a wonderful talent for empathy and understanding. He might not be brave enough to boldly stand up for you in the face of adversary, but he'll absolutely make sure that you're alright afterward.

He's a bit of a derpy guy, but he's sweet and compassionate any way you slice it.

History
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Kiyoshi is the firstborn son of Ryuji Matarasu and Sooyun Matarasu. His family never had all that much money to begin with, but when his father died while his mother was pregnant with his youngest sister, their situation spiraled ever downward. They only had the small amount of funds that his mother could scrape up from her hunts, and it wasn't enough to sustain them. Later, Kiyoshi's mother had made it into the First(?) Fleet, and she took them all to the New World hoping that they could start over there. Sooyun found herself getting payed more, and eventually they no longer had to worry about if they were going to get to eat in a given day.

But that bliss only lasted for a short while. Having three young children left to fend for themselves for the majority of the day isn't exactly an option for a single mother. Sooyun was incredibly protective of her kids, so she wanted to know that they were close by and safe. Whenever she would go on a hunt, she would bring them along and let them stay at base camp. But she drilled it into their heads that they were never allowed to set foot outside the camp, because it was far too dangerous for any of them. This worked well for a long time, but it was doomed to fail eventually. Kiyoshi was young, and he looked up to his mother to an immeasurable degree. He wished so badly that he could join her on her hunts, but he couldn't even pick up a sword. Seeing his mother's passion for hunting, it was his ultimate dream to be a hunter just like her. His curiosity and desire got the best of him one day, and he managed to sneak out of base camp to explore the Rotten Vale that his mother had set off to hunt an Odogaron in. When he finally found his mother fighting the beast, he was thrilled. But it didn't take long for the Odogaron to sniff him out. The Odogaron attacked him, tearing off his cheek with its claws. It was a foggy, bloody memory after that. His mother managed to grab the attention of the Odogaron again, but it cost her an eye. She pursued the beast and finished it off before getting Kiyoshi to the infirmary as quickly as possible. He almost didn't survive that night, but by some miracle he pushed through.

Scared for her children and out of money after paying for Kiyoshi's medical bills, Sooyun was forced to leaved the New World and return to Val Habar. She managed to find work again, but after another hunting accident, she lost her other eye and could no longer hunt. They lived in complete poverty for the next few years, and Kiyoshi felt guilty for all of it. He took it on himself to provide for his family, and even resorted to stealing when necessary.

But one day, when Kiyoshi attempted to steal a piece of bread from what looked to be a group of some hunter's apprentices, he managed to get caught. He would've been punished severely if a man by the name of Renther Lore hadn't taken him under his wing. Kiyoshi learned that Renther was a very skilled veteran hunter, and he begged him to teach him to be a hunter, even though he was only around ten at the time. Renther agreed, and Kiyoshi trained diligently under his guidance.

After many, many years, Kiyoshi had managed to go off on his own and provide for his family. Two of his sisters managed to find jobs as well. But when he heard about an opportunity to return to the New World as a member of the Fifth Fleet, he jumped on it immediately. He knew that his mother had a burning desire to finish her work there and learn the mystery of the Elder Crossing, but she had been cut short of that. He wanted to finish what she had started.

Sergei
[Best friend] Admittedly, Kiyoshi thought Sergei was a little stupid-looking when he first met him. He was definitely the strangest of the bunch, but something about that was comforting to Kiyoshi. He found Sergei to be incredibly dorky, but it was a trait that they both shared. They thrived off of each other during their training for the Fifth Fleet, and their simple conversations evolved into an unbreakable bond. He has a lot to thank Sergei for, as he feels like Sergei was the first person who could actually see him for who he really was. The two are now almost never seen apart.

Lorelai
[Close friend] Kiyoshi was a little alarmed when he first discovered that they were going to be getting another roommate. He had a lot of trouble warming up to new people, and he wasn't exactly looking forward to having to be on edge when he was at home now. Lorelai was definitely a strange cookie, and he couldn't tell if she hated him or not. But once they both warmed up, Kiyoshi saw how valuable of a friend she was, and was willing to open up to her about his backstory and show her his scar. He hopes that they can only grow closer the longer that they know each other.
